August 2, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Having a dog doesn’t mean missing out on a good hike! Outdoor Recreation found 6 dog-friendly hiking trails that dogs and dog owners are sure to love. In fact, dogs can be great companions for hiking as long as they are in good physical shape and owners take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe hike. Price: $12/person

August 3, 10 a.m. - noon, Library, B49 Celebrate the theme “Reading by Design” with robot stories and songs. Afterwards, make some robot crafts! Ages 5-12

AMSTERDAM EXPLORATION 3-DAY WEEKEND*

August 4-6, Outdoor Recreation, H15 With its canals and massive harbour, this city reclaimed from the sea offers countless opportunities to drift. 59TH ANNUAL GERMAN AMERICAN VOLKSFEST

August 4-6, Camp Kasserine, Grafenwoehr The 59th German-American Volksfest is a free community event at Grafenwoehr Camp Kasserine August 4-6. The Volksfest is a familystyle festival featuring performances that span country music to 80s pop presented by Armed Forces Entertainment. The festival fosters German and American friendship and culture - living, working and celebrating together. Volksfest draws American soldiers, families, civilians, retirees and Germans living in the surrounding areas of USAG Bavaria. Carnival rides, a beer tent, German and American food, displays of German and American Army equipment, retail booths, music and dancing are highlights of Volksfest.

RABENSTEIN MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL

August 5, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Experience the mystique of the Middle Ages in the heart of Franconian Switzerland. Join Outdoor Recreation with a visit to the largest Middle Ages Market in Northern Bavaria at the Burg Rabenstein, located in the Ailsbachtal of Franconian Switzerland. Experience medieval battle reenactments, puppet theater for children, large fire shows, markets full of handmade ornaments and music from the middle ages played on traditional instruments. Price: $29/person

August 11-14, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Spend the long weekend hiking through the picturesque Karwendel Alps in Austria. This hike goes through 26 kilometers of mesmerizing landscape, ending at a different hut for each overnight stay. Prior hiking experience is required for this adventure. FAMILY CANOE DAY ON THE NAAB

August 19, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Cast off in the charming castle village of Kallmünz, where the Vils and the Naab join to form a wide, beautiful mountain valley. See the local wildlife, vegetation and terrain features while floating in the currents of the river, and end the day at a water-side beer garden. Price: $49/adult, $25/child under 12

August 20, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Without a doubt, the “Gäubodenvolksfest“ is one of Bavaria’s oldest and most popular festivals. It offers a wholesome mixture of genuine Bavarian lifestyle and vitality, and is located next to the historical town square with its magnificent old burgher-houses. Price: $29/person

CYS “ALL STAR” PROGRAM

Our staff work very hard to make sure that Children are well cared for and have every opportunity to grow and develop. The ‘All Star’ program is set up to show staff how much we appreciate them and recognize their tireless efforts of caring for our Children and Youth. Please help us by writing ‘star notes’ for excellence that you see. Each facility has a special location for the ‘All Star’ cards to be posted. At the end of each month, the cards will be collected and an award will be given for the caregiver who has the most ‘Star Cards’.

INFANT MASSAGE August 1 & 8, 10-11 a.m., B321 Bond with your baby while learning International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) techniques to help relieve tension, gas and colic through a relaxing infant massage. This is a five week program.

SURVIVAL GERMAN 101 August 2, 3, 9 & 10, 5:15-7:15 p.m., B10A An introduction to German will make it easier for you to order food in restaurants, shop, travel, ask for directions and understand German doctors. Make yourself more comfortable living in Germany by learning basic phrases. IMPORTANT NOTE: These are sequential classes that build on each other. Course consists of four 2-hour classes.

FINANCIALLY FIT August 4 & 18, 9 a.m. - noon, B10A A hands-on interactive class that teaches the importance of goal setting, finding out your net worth (shows how much you owe compared to what you own), budget setting techniques, a reality check (do I really spend what I think I spend?), setting up a spending plan to follow your budget and debt reduction strategies.

HALLO HOHENFELS NEWCOMERS ORIENTATION August 22-25, B10A This is the place to be if you’re new to the community. In addition to learning some German language, you will explore local communities (including a bakery and butcher shop), discover a huge home decorating store and spend the final day site seeing in Regensburg. Find out how your new community works without doing everything yourself and make some new friends at the same time. Special DOUBLE bonus: a visit to the epicenter of the rotations: the “Star Wars” building and a visit to the training area, a “Box Tour.”

Mondays, 6 p.m., Bowling Center, B14 All gamers welcome. Come and pit your skills against others with the same interests. Games include Warhammer 40K, Dungeons & Dragons, Star Fleet Battles, Zombicide, Magic the Gathering and many others. Have a game you would like to try out? Bring it along!

CYS SKIESUnlimited Classes SKIESUnlimited stands for “School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills” with the word “Unlimited” for the unlimited possibilities that this program provides Children and Youth. Classes include Break Dancing, Gymnastics, Tiny Tumblers, Sewing, Tutoring, Soccer Skills Academy and Yoga. RED PIN BOWLING Fridays, 6 p.m., Bowling Center, B14 A Red Pin is added to every lane. If the Red Pin is in the #1 position and you bowl a strike that frame, you win a free game. Attendant must be informed and pin spot verified before bowling.

OUTDOOR CLIMBING Every other Tuesday Sport Climbing (rock climbing on cliffs with pre-installed protection) is one of the fastest growing adventure sports worldwide that demands both mental and physical fitness. Join Outdoor Recreation for weekly climbing evenings to learn about equipment, safety systems, efficient movement techniques and mental training for climbing success. Climbing locations will change weekly depending on ability levels of participants. Gear included. Price: $25/person

LET IT GO! First Tuesday of the month, 10-11 a.m., B10A Feeling pressured? Too many changes in your life coming at you too fast? Learn about the different kinds of stress and how problematic stress can affect your mental and physical health. Identify warning signs and the sources of your stress then learn how to better manage stress by, among other things, learning to let go.

SIMMER DOWN Second & Fourth Tuesday of the month, 10-11:30 a.m., B10A Anger is a natural emotional reaction, but if not managed well, it can cause many problems from health issues to relationship issues. Is your anger hurting you? Understand that there are at least ten styles of expressing anger. Learn yours and how you deal with conflict. Learning more effective ways of dealing with conflict may help you live a happier and more peaceful life.

KIDS KONNECTION Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9-11 a.m., B321 This twice weekly ACS playgroup offers a fun and diverse format featuring music time, free play and special activity stations. Redefined for ages 6 weeks to 4 years, this program offers flexibility and opportunity to meet new people who are raising young children in our community.

EVENINGS AT THE LAKE

CHESS CLUB

Every other Tuesday Paddling with Outdoor Recreation on the Steinburger See is a great way to spend the warm Bavarian evenings! Choose between canoes, kayaks or paddle boards while exploring the lake’s tiny islands, the clean and wide swimming beaches or the water-side restaurant. Small blocks of boat-specific instruction are available upon request. Boat, gear and transport included. Price: $29/person

Wednesdays, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Library, B49 Play with other chess enthusiasts and improve your skills. All ages are welcome.

Lapsit Story Time, Children’s Story Time, Lego Club and Rainbow Loom will return in September

THURSDAY NIGHT BIKE RIDES

Thursdays, Outdoor Recreation, H15 The Hohenfels Outdoor Recreation Mountain Bike Club rides the fantastic single track trails on post to help each other gain the skills, practice and friends to participate in the Race Series Circuit. Rides are designed to accommodate a range of abilities, but will be physically demanding. Price: free to ride, half-off bike rentals
