HEADLAMP HIKE

January 12 & 26, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Looking for something fun to do on long winter evenings? Weather permitting, Outdoor Recreation will hike in boots or snowshoes through the night and warm the darkness with high spirits and great stories. Our headlamps show the way - and a cup of mulled wine or cocoa may complete the journey! Gear, guided hike and transportation included. Headlamps are not provided. Price: $25/person

MLK SKI/SNOWBOARD WEEKEND: WILDER KAISER*

January 13-16, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Join Outdoor Recreation for a family friendly ski/snowboard trip to Brixen im Thale, not only one of the oldest villages in the Tyrolean lowlands, but also the centre of Austria’s largest interconnected ski area. Trip includes three nights in a 3-star hotel with dinner and breakfast, and daily transportation to the slopes in a modern luxury coach. Ski and snowboard lessons are available daily by professionally certified PSIA and AASI instructors. Lift passes not included. Gear rentals available at ODR for half price for all participants. FIFTH ANNUAL FURRY FRIENDS SLEEPOVER

January 19, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Library, B49 Bring your stuffed animal bestie for fun crafts and special stories, then leave your fluffy friend for a mischievous sleepover. Enjoy a light breakfast when you pick them up!

WORLD WINE NIGHT

January 20, Outdoor Recreation, H15 This wine tour provide an intimate experience between the guest and the wines of each world region. Not only do you receive the hands-on attention of your certified wine expert guide, but also the company of wine-lovers just like yourself. No other tour will be able to transport you to the tastes of so many world regions in the space of one beautiful Bavarian winter! January will be French wines. Cost includes transportation, local wines and light regional appetizers. Price: $39/person

ZUGSPITZE SKI EXPRESS

January 21, Outdoor Recreation, H15 A winter holiday at the Zugspitze is a paradise for skiers! Transportation to this beautiful alpine ski destination is included in your trip fee. Lift passes not included. Gear rentals are half price at the ODR for all trip participants. Price: $49/person


INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA*

January 21, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Tyrol’s capital is a sight to behold. The jagged rock spires of the Nordkette range are so close, it is possible to travel within minutes from the city’s heart to over 2000 meters above sea level and to alpine pastures where cowbells chime. Innsbruck is, in many ways, Austria in microcosm: its late-medieval Altstadt is picture-book perfect, presided over by a grand Habsburg palace and baroque cathedral, while its Olympic ski jump with big mountain views make a spectacular leap between the urban and the outdoors. Price: $89/adult, $45/child under 12

BUILD AN IGLOO WORKSHOP

January 22, Outdoor Recreation, H15 This is a unique, back-to-nature experience full of peace and tranquility, set amidst a magical snow-covered winter landscape. Build an igloo in the Bavarian Forest and enjoy hot drinks and biscuits as your reward. This introductory workshop is a great experience for children, teens and adults who want to learn the ancient art of ice shelter building. This trip is weather dependent. Price: $59/person

LEARN TO SKI/SNOWBOARD QUICK TRIP TO GROSSER ARBER

January 28, Outdoor Recreation, H15 From never clipping into bindings to carving your edges, Outdoor Recreation is here to give you the skills needed to start skiing or snowboarding. Spend the day on the slopes of what we call the Mont Blanc of the Bavarian Forest: Grosser Arber. Lessons are provided by professionally certified PSIA and AASI instructors. Lift passes, gear and transportation included. Price: $99/person

SNOWSHOE HIKING

January 28-29, Outdoor Recreation, H15 Snowshoes will lead to remote and otherwise inaccessible places, passing the most glorious hidden winter landscapes. Outdoor Recreation guides this hike to magnificent panoramic views of the Fichtel Mountains and take a short detour to an ice wall. The descent is to the east, arriving at the thousand meter Seehügel and then on through the Ahornfelsen. Sunday starts early through more wild landscapes to ascend a neighboring peak for brilliant views over the Maintal Valley. Snowshoe gear, guided hike and transportation included. Not suitable for children under 12. This trip is weather dependent. Price: $149/adult in double room, $200/single adult

CYS “ALL STAR” PROGRAM

Our staff work very hard to make sure that Children are well cared for and have every opportunity to grow and develop. The ‘All Star’ program is set up to show staff how much we appreciate them and recognize their tireless efforts of caring for our Children and Youth. Please help us by writing ‘star notes’ for excellence that you see. Each facility has a special location for the ‘All Star’ cards to be posted. At the end of each month, the cards will be collected and an award will be given for the caregiver who has the most ‘Star Cards’.

SURVIVAL GERMAN 101 January 9-12, 5:15-7:15 p.m., B10A An introduction to German will make it easier for you to order food in restaurants, shop, travel, ask for directions and understand German doctors. You will simply feel more comfortable living in Germany. This could be the best use of 8 hours of your life ever. IMPORTANT NOTE: These are sequential classes that build on each other. Course consists of four two hour classes.

SURVIVAL GERMAN 201 January 23-26, 5:15-7:15 p.m., B10A The continuation into German (Level 2) that will add greater confidence, vocabulary and enlightenment into your German language ability. It makes sense to speak the language if you live here, right? So take advantage of this FREE second level program.

HALLO HOHENFELS NEWCOMERS ORIENTATION January 24-27, B10A This is the place to be if you’re new to the community. In addition to learning some German language, you will explore local communities (including a bakery and butcher shop), discover Mobelhof, a huge home decorating store and spend the final day site seeing in Regensburg. Find out how your new community works without doing everything yourself and make some new friends at the same time. Special DOUBLE bonus: a visit to the epicenter of the rotations: the “Star Wars” building and a visit to the training area, a “Box Tour.”

We’re also discussing best practices in locating federal jobs using USAJOBS, as well as other important tips to getting noticed and hired!

Wednesdays, Outdoor Recreation, H15 A study by the University of Oxford suggests that the earliest ice skating happened in southern Finland more than 3,000 years ago. Continue this age-old tradition by taking a whirl with Outdoor Recreation every Wednesday night this winter. Price: $29/person

BABY BOOT CAMP Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., B10A If you think about it, the reason for Boot Camp, really the reason for any kind of training is to get ready for the ‘main’ event. This 7-part rotating program answers questions most books and programs don’t. Geared for parents-to-be, this workshop covers topics such as birth certificate process in Germany, breast feeding, personal expectations, bringing baby home and much more.

KIDS KONNECTION

Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9-11 a.m., ACS, B321 This twice weekly ACS playgroup offers a fun and diverse format featuring music time, free play and special activity stations. Redefined for ages 6 weeks to 4 years, this program offers flexibility and opportunity to meet new people who are raising young children in our community.

CYS SKIESUnlimited Classes

SKIESUnlimited stands for “School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills” with the word “Unlimited” for the unlimited possibilities that this program provides Children and Youth. Classes include: Piano, Karate, Dance, Gymnastics, Survival Cooking, Junior Chefs and Tiny Tumblers. For more information on each program and how to sign up, contact Parent Central Services.

This is a great opportunity to introduce the basic building blocks of early literacy while establishing positive habits and routines in reading for babies and their parents.
