The book for Norwegian Illustrators The Norwegian Illustrators book is produced by the illustrators of the Norwegian organization Grafill. Grafill represents illustrators, cartoonists, animators, web designers and graphic designers in Norway. The main goal of this book is to reach as many potential clients of illustration as possible, both nationally and internationally. For this reason we have chosen the English language. Norwegian illustration has been internationally recognized in the last decade with awards at Bologna Children’s Book Fair for Norwegian illustrators Øyvind Torseter and Stian Hole, and an Academy Award (Oscar) for the animator and illustrator Torill Kove. Grafill Illustration hopes that more businesses will use illustration and that the book will be a useful tool and reference, making it easier to pick up the phone and start a dialogue with an illustrator. Illustrators see the world visually and can come up with points of view that can be inventive and full of surprises. Illustration can help a company to make a personal mark in a big market where companies fight for attention. Enjoy the book and we hope you enjoy and get inspired by Norwegian Illustrators, animators and cartoonists!
Kristine Agøy Sand «The Music Machine» Kristine Agøy Sand(born 1984) is a new and upcoming young illustrator. We chose to use her illustration as a theme through the book, because she is a new member of Grafill and we hope to see more of her work in the years to come in books and magazines. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Kunsthøgskolen in Oslo, KHiO, in May 2009. She studied art history and attended an art foundation course (Einar Granum Art School in Oslo) before she decided to become an illustrator. «Through my teenage years I always drew. I was so happy that day when I discovered there was an occupation called illustrator. I was overwhelmed that it was possible to make a living from my drawing.» During her Bachelor degree course she spent one semester in New York at the School of Visual Arts. Her tutor was the illustrator Marcos Chin, which she found enriching and inspiring, and she is forever grateful for the experience.

Managing Director Grafill – Norwegian Organisation for Visual Communication
Keep up the good spirit! Grafill is in the fortunate situation of having a very active and engaged special interest group for the illustrators amongst our members. Grafill Illustration arranges specific courses, seminars and workshops for professional illustrators in addition to the annual Grilldagen and the publishing of this Illustration catalogue. From a wider perspective, Grafill sees it as a central and important mission to promote Norwegian illustrators interests as a trade, financially, legally and on ethical matters. Grafill is arranging annual events like the book competition, Årets Vakreste Bøker, and an exhibition and seminars for the public, Billedlig Talt, which focuses on book illustration. For four days thousands of book lovers visited Billedlig Talt in January 2010 for seminars, an exhibition and social activities at the popular House of Literature in Oslo. Our goal was to focus on illustration and picture books. A great number of the Norwegian publishing houses and editors attended the event. In the exhibition of 2010, 145 illustrators were presented together with 209 books from 27 publishing houses. The event was a fantastic hunting ground for the book lover. In the autumn of 2009 the media claimed that the Norwegian book publishers were in a backlash when Amazon introduced their reading-board The Kindle. Norwegian users did not have access to Norwegian book titles because the publishing houses could not agree between themselves on a technical platform, systems of payments etc. Kindle was a popular Christmas present in 2009, but already out of date in January when the rumours started of a new Apple product, the iPad, and now its here. For Grafill this represented lots of exciting new possibilities for a new type of reading experience and not to mention all the new ways image and text can be presented by illustration, animation and design. Grafill focused on the future of the picture book at the annual Billedlig Talt. First with a seminar with the author Eirik Newth, talking about his ideas and thoughts on the use of the reading-board. Together with the information manager of the Publishing house Gyldendal, Bjarne Buset, who talked about how the book-publishers are working for a new unique and visually exciting reading experience for the reading-board market. It is Grafill´s task to inform all our members of the direction of new developments. The snowball is just starting to roll! Grafill has long and strategic tradition for international involvement and co-operation through the networks Nordic Visual Communication, European Illustrators Alliance and Icograda. Grafill is emphasizing our professions commercial strength and the right of the copyright law internationally. Our closest fellow organisations in Scandinavia are, Finnish Kuvittajat ry, Swedish Svenska Tecknare and Danish Tegnere. The challenge of the way copyright is executed on a political level is now widely discussed internationally. In Norway Grafill has supported the campaign Share, Do Not Steal!, but together with the other countries in Scandinavia we are working towards stronger understanding of the Copyright Law and guidelines between commissioners and illustrators and graphic designers, also ethical guidelines between the professionals within Visual Communication. Experience and dialogues are strengthening the understanding of these matters. Grafill is also involved nationally in the cultural and political landscape for better grants and support for professional illustrators and designers. Valuable experiences have been harvested and batteries recharged through our international networks. I would like to thank our members of Grafill Illustration, for their hard work towards our common goal and joint aim: Illustration and the development and survival of the profession.
Keep up the good spirit!

Randi Hobøl
Leader of Grafill Illustration
What is Grafill Illustration? Grafill Illustration, the professional illustrators of Grafill, Norway, is proud to present some of our best illustrators in this new book. Norwegian Illustrators No 03 shows that illustration is a natural part of visual communication. Grafill Illustration arranges exhibitions, lectures/discussions for illustrators and works continually to improve the professional lives for Norwegian illustrators. Good contracts, grants for illustration projects and small business management are important examples. Norwegian Illustrators No 03 presents illustrators within a wide range of styles and techniques, from drawing to airbrush and computer-made images. Many illustrators write and illustrate, and are thus authors of books and comics, work as printmakers and arrange exhibitions, while others work with animation and graphic design. Norwegian illustration is in a time of exciting and dynamic development. Illustrators depend on different arenas to show their work. Grafill Illustration will issue the book on a regular basis to display contemporary Norwegian illustration. The book is an accessible tool and offers a unique possibility for all people who use and are interested in illustration. Grafill Illustration wants to celebrate and thank all illustrators that have contributed to Norwegian Illustrators No 03! Enjoy!
Randi Hobøl works as an illustrator and is Head of Study for Illustration at The Norwegian School of Creative Studies in Norway. She has been the leader of Grafill Illustration since 2005.
