Päivä kääntyy hämärtyväksi illaksi. Hiljaisuus laskeutuu luontoon. Vain taivaanvuohen yksitoikkoinen kitkutus kantautuu läheiseltä suolta. Silloin alkaa karhun hetki.

Day turns to dusk. Silence falls across nature. Only the monotonous sounds of the common snipe can be heard from the nearby bog. The hour of the bear begins.

Spring is quickly turning to summer. The snow recedes to reveal scents of summer. I am sitting in my photographer’s shelter in the cool of the evening. I am holding a book but not really reading it, just a line every now and then. I can hardly remember what I have read – my thoughts are elsewhere. I keep scanning the slowly darkening forest. The hour of the bear is near.

Kevät on kovaa vauhtia muuttumassa kesäksi. Laajenevat pälvet tuovat tulevan suven tuoksuja. Istun kuvauskojussani viilenevässä illassa. Kädessäni on kirja, mutta luen vain rivin silloin, toisen tällöin.

Tuskin muistan lukemaani - ajatukseni ovat muualla.

Katseeni haravoi hiljalleen hämärtyvää metsää. Pian olisi karhun hetki.

Parasta aikaa vuodesta on kun lumet sulavat kohisten ja järripeipot laulavat. Silloin vietän suurimman osan ajastani maastossa.

The best time of the year is when the snow is melting fast and the bramblings are singing. That is when I spend most of my time in the woods.

Uljaat metsot soivat kiihkeimmillään ja kontiot heräilevät talvi-uniltaan. Riekot vaihtavat kauniin, valkean pukunsa kesäiseen ruskeaan. Teerien sointi tuntuu kuuluvan kaikkialta, kurjet antavat trumpettien soida sydämiensä kyllyydestä.

The proud capercaillies sing their most fervent song, and the bears are waking up after hibernation. The willow grouse turn from beautiful wintry white to summery brown. The song of the black grouse can be heard everywhere, and the cranes blow their trumpets to their heart’s content.

Kevät on aikaa, jolloin ymmärtää luonnon todellisen voiman ja kauneuden.

Spring is the time when you can understand the true power and beauty of nature.

Karhun saapumisen jotenkin tuntee, aavistaa. Se ei ole kiinni kellonajasta eikä säästä. Silloin vaan kaikki on kohdallaan karhun tulla. Valot ja varjot ovat niin, kun niiden karhun mielestä täytyykin olla.

You can somehow feel and predict the coming of the bear. It does not depend on the time or weather. Everything is just right for the bear to come. The lights and shadows are the way the bear likes them to be.

Joskus se tulee hitaasti, kuin nukuksissa, toisinaan määrätietoisin askelin. Ei se tule ryminällä, se vaan on siinä. On saattanut olla jo pitkän aikaa, ennen kuin sen huomaa. Korpit ovat tienneet sen tulon jo pitkään.

Sometimes it comes slowly, as if asleep; at other times it comes with a determined stride. It does not make a rumble, it just appears. It may have been there for a long time before you notice it. The ravens have long known that it is coming.

Lasken kirjan hiljaa kädestäni. Tiesin karhun tulevan pian, mutta ihmettelen taas kerran, kuinka se pääsi aivan lähelleni niin huomaamatta. Se istuu kuusen takana vain muutaman metrin päässä. Tuo vanha takkuturkki yllätti minut jälleen.

I put the book down quietly. I knew the bear was coming soon, but once again I wonder how it managed to get so near without my noticing. It is sitting behind a fir tree just a few metres away. The shaggy old creature surprised me again.

Karhua en ole pelännyt koskaan. Minua ei lapsena peloteltu sillä.

I have never been afraid of the bear. I was not told scary stories about it when I was a child.
