Sea Lapland (Merilappi in Finnish) occupies the most southwesterly region of Lapland, nestled by the shores of the Bothnian Bay and crossed by large rivers at the western border of Finland. Two of Lapland’s four cities, Kemi and Tornio, and three municipalities, Keminmaa, Simo and Tervola, are in Sea Lapland.

Virtojen reunamilla asutus on vuosisatojen aikana kasvanut kohti sisämaata ja pohjoista.

Siellä on Lapin neljästä kaupungista kaksi, Kemi ja Tornio, ja kolme kuntaa, Keminmaa, Simo ja Tervola. Meri ja joet ovat seudun leimallisin piirre. Maisemassa vaihtelevat, kaupunkija maaseutuasutus, jylhät vaarat, aapasuot, laajat erämaat, avarat peltoaukeat ja kauan asutut kylät. Meren keskellä lähellä rannikkoa kohoaa saaristo, joka muodostaa perinteistä kalastuselinkeinoa esittelevän Perämeren kansallispuiston.

Kemijoki- ja Tornionjokivarsien vanha murre tuo esiin ihmisen ja asutuksen pitkän historian. Vanhaa meänkieltä puhutaan aina kauas Ruotsin puolelle asti. Molemmat ovat nykyisin myös kirjallisuuden merkittävää kieltä.

Teollisuus, kauppa, merenkulku, maanviljelys, karjankasvatus ja matkailu ovat alueen tärkeitä elinkeinoja.

southwesterly region of Lapland, nestled by the shores of the Bothnian Bay and crossed by large rivers at the western border of Finland. Its population has expanded from the river banks toward the inland and north in the course of centuries.

Two of Lapland’s four cities, Kemi and Tornio, and three municipalities, Keminmaa, Simo and Tervola, are in Sea Lapland. The sea and rivers are the most distinctive features of this region. The landscape is very diverse: urban and rural communities, tree-covered hills, string bogs, vast stretches of wilderness, open fields and old villages. From the sea, an archipelago rises near the shoreline. This island group forms the Bothnian Bay National Park in which traditional fishery is being displayed.

The long history of the people and their settlements in this region can be heard in the old dialect spoken along the shores of the Kemijoki and Torne Rivers. The old Meänkieli language (lit. “our language”) is spoken on both sides of the Finnish-Swedish border. Both are nowadays used as significant languages of literature as well.

Industry, trade, seafaring, agriculture, cattle breeding and tourism are important means of livelihood in Sea Lapland.

virkistyskalastajien paratiisi. Matkailijalle on elämys päästä risteilemään vesille. Siian lippoaminen on Kukkolankosken erikoisuus Tornionjoen molemmilla rannoilla. Samalla voi ihailla kosken voimaa.

Nature is always close at hand in Sea Lapland. The sea is

a paradise for sailors, just as the rivers are a paradise for recreational fishermen. A traveller will enjoy the experience of cruising on these waters. The traditional “lippoaminen”, fishing common whitefish with a special type of net at the end of a rod, is a speciality of the Kukkolankoski Rapids on both sides of the Torne River. While at it, one can marvel at the force of the rapids.

Suurten laivojen reitit kulkevat Kemin Ajoksen ja Tornion Röyttän satamiin.

Perämerelle ovat ominaisia saaret ja matalikot, ja aikoinaan purjehtimiseen on rakennettu oma kaljaasityyppinen matalallaki purjehtinut alus, jollainen on entisöity Kemiin. Sellaisilla kuljetettiin kauppatavaraa aina Ruotsiin saakka.

he Bothnian Bay is the northernmost part of the Gulf of Bothnia. Its water is extremely low in saline. The waters along its shores are moved by winds which alternately reveal and swallow shallow gulfs.

The routes of large ships lead to the Port of Ajos in Kemi and Port of Röyttä in Tornio.

Shallows and islands are characteristic of the Bothnian Bay. A special galeas type of ship, which was able to sail through shallows, was designed in this region in the olden days. One of these ships has been restored in Kemi.

They were used to transport goods all the way to Sweden.

Kemi, a centre of saw mill industry, received its rights from Alexander II, Emperor of Russia and Grand Prince of Finland, in 1869. The face of the city undergoes changes. The residents can enjoy both the older surroundings with wooden houses as well as the architecture of modern block houses in both centers of this region.
