It’s your bible for the next year and it contains everything you need to know about what will be going on at your Students’ Union. You’ll find all the information about our activities, societies, representation work, entertainments, and essential information about the amazing city of Newcastle, plus much more. The Students’ Union is run by students just like you and is independent from the University. If you have any problems, with your course or other aspects of students life, be it large or small, YOUR Union is here to help you. We can support you and represent you and fight to get the right result for you! Don’t forget, you’re automatically a member of the Students’ Union and have a say in how we’re run. As well as the annual elections there’s numerous ways to make your voice heard - Union Council, Annual General Meeting or just talking to one of the Sabbactical Officers. The Sabbatical Officers are elected each year. There are 5 of us in total and we’re responsible to you, the students, for the running of the Students’ Union. We can usually be found on the first floor of the Students’ Union’s main building, or you can email us. (You can find our contact details on page 8). Finally, on behalf of everyone at the Students’ Union, I would like to wish you very best of luck in the coming year and hope that you have a cracking time. Yours, Dave Wright

YOURSTUDENTS’ UNION Being a student at Northumbria you have embarked on what is set to be the best time of your life, not only can we provide you with an unforgettable student experience but by September 2010 the Students’ Union facilities are set to be some of the biggest and best in the UK. During the past year there has been huge investment and by now you will have already experienced our commercial developments Habita and Domain. These refurbishments have been the start of our multi million pound building transformation and are just a taste of what’s to come! Shortly construction will begin on the ground floor and main entrance, which will be turned into a beautiful glass fronted facade with an impressive front entrance leading to a fresh modern and contemporary Welcome Desk area. There will be a new Membership Services Hub which will be home to a brand new Activities Centre and Advice & Representation Centre, with WiFi, IT stations in comfortable stylish surroundings. In addition Stage 2 will be closed from November and turned into an impressive performance and entertainment centre for the School of Arts and Social Sciences, and our very own societies and showcasing headlining acts and other large events. Moving up to the first floor a brand new lounge will be created with sofas and state of the art IT for Sabbatical Offices, international students and somewhere just to hang out and meet with friends, surf the net or catch up on course work. The final phase of the works will be the redevelopment of Reds next summer and the opening of the Sports Centre linked into our very own Domain. As with all building works there will be disruption and we aim to keep this to a minimum however we would like to thank you in advance for accommodating any temporary upheaval, we promise you that it will be worth it!

YOURSTUDENTS’ UNION SABBATICAL OFFICERS What they do: Work for you full-time. Representing your views at strategic meetings within the University on anything and everything to do with the student experience, they have contacts ranging from your School’s Dean to the Vice Chancellor and in every University service going, making them the most influential officers of the Students’ Union. They also sit on the Trustee Board ensuring that the organisation is run effectively with your interests at heart. DAVE WRIGHT PRESIDENT Hi, I’m Dave Wright the President of your Students’ Union. My job is all about representation! As President, I coordinate the Sabbatical Team made up of myself and the four Vice-Presidents, ensuring that everything is run smoothly in the organisation. I represent Northumbria students at a University, local, and national level, with the help of such bodies as the National Union of Students (NUS), and I’m the principal contact for these groups. I sit on many University Committees including the Board of Governors, putting forward your views as students and ensuring your voice is heard. Most importantly, I’m here for you, the students. Whether you’re an undergrad, a postgrad, a mature student or an international student, if you want to come and talk to me about something you like or dislike, or if you’ve got an idea, then my door is always open. YOURSTUDENTS’ UNION HOW THE UNION WORKS The Students’ Union is run by students, for students, meaning it’s completely independent from the University. The Union direction is guided by a Trustee Board, including 5 Sabbatical Officers who are elected by students and through the 37 members of Student Council, who make sure that students from across the University are represented in decision making; you too can make your voice heard. Make sure you come along to the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 10th November and have your say. Remember you can get involved but we know it can seem confusing at the best of times, so here’s a handy at-a-glance guide to Union democracy. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council is the core body policy-making of your Union - its members can vote on motions to pass policy, which the Union and its Sabbatical Officers are then obliged to deliver. YOURSTUDENTS’ UNION ELECTIONS The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation and we hold elections every year in March meaning that you get to decide exactly who runs YOUR Students’ Union. Dates for the Elections 2010 are available in the calendar section of this diary. Why don’t you think about standing for election? The sabbatical roles offer a fantastic opportunity to gain excellent experience that could set you apart in the competitive graduate job market - not many graduates get the opportunity to be a trustee of a multi-million pound charity! REFERENDA - when everyone deserves the chance to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ Some things are just too big to be decided by Student Council alone - when every student deserves the chance to have their say anonymously, that’s where Referenda come in. A Referendum is a vote that is held cross-campus on a particular question, which every student - whether or not they’re a Student Councillor and whether or not they’re even based at Northumbria - can vote on electronically and anonymously. They’re the easy way to make sure that students are involved in decision making. Look out for our first referendum of the year - on the future direction of the union from Monday 16th November 2009 – Friday 7th May 2010. STUDENT COMMUNITY FORUMS You don’t have to sit through a whole Student Council meeting and wait to have your say - Student Community Forums bring the discussion to you. They are the easy way to voice your opinion on the big issues that affect you as a student. It could be a problem with a University accommodation block, building works disrupting your learning in a particular School, a new ‘initiative’ of the University that the Students’ Union needs your input on before responding, or anything that is worthy of full, open debate, without getting bogged down in council protocols and procedures. 12 06

FOOD&DRINK RECYCLE YOUR MONEY Unlike our high street competitors, all the money we make in the bars, is put back into YOUR Students’ Union to make sure that your student experience is as good as it can be, whether that is extra funding for societies, subsidised trips on the ‘Give it a Go’ Programme or better entertainments. We listened to you and discovered you would like to see a modern stylish internet café bar and that’s why we invested £2 million into our brand new ground floor establishment Habita which opened last year. This is just one example of how we recycle our profits into making things even better for students. Without YOU the Students’ Union will not be able to provide all the exciting activities, representation and events as you are the most essential ingredient to our success. Just think whilst all the bars and shops in town make loads of money out of you, we are consistently looking for ways to make your student experience a great one!

From the conception of an idea which you and your peers think can improve your learning experience to actually seeing something change gives you a real sense of achievement. I really enjoyed being a course rep and I feel that the experience was made even better by working within a nationally recognised best practice organisation with 2 years of national awards for its reps.’ The Advice and Representation Manager provides support, training, and guidance to students who represent their course mates as: • •
• •

WELFARE&CAMPAIGNS TOP WELFARE TIPS University may be the first time you’ve lived away from home, and with so many things to do and people to see, it’s easy to let things like eating, sleeping and generally taking care of yourself slide! However, if you follow our welfare tips, you won’t go far wrong…
STAY SAFE Walking alone in the dark is never a good idea, especially if you’ve been drinking, so don’t spend your taxi money on another round! Share a cab if you’re skint! The nearest taxi rank is outside Pacific on Northumberland Rd.
DRINK AWARE Keep your drink with you at all times, and watch the bartender pour it. Also, since you’re going to have plenty of nights out, try not to get smashed out of your brain every time - have a night off every couple of days, and have the odd soft drink or water too.
SAFE SEX Yes it’s all new and exciting and suddenly the world is full of attractive people who want to take their clothes off. By all means engage in consensual sex, but since nothing will spoil your year like an STD, use condoms or a dental dam for oral and penetrative sex.
DRUGS Best advice? Don’t do them! But if you do, make sure someone sober knows where you’ll be and what you’ll be taking.

WELFARE&CAMPAIGNS AWAITING TEXT STANDING UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS Here at Your Students’ Union we are your representatives and we’re here to make sure the issues important to students are addressed. We campaign to change University policy and practices, to make a real difference to all Northumbria students. Working together we have the power to effect the changes that matter. The campaigns we run are decided by YOU. This year we will be focusing on expanding the use of anonymous marking across the university and making ‘hidden fees’ more transparent’.
ACADEMIC CAMPAIGNS Academic campaigns set out to improve the way learning and teaching is delivered at Northumbria, to make things better for you, the student. We have run campaigns on achieving better feedback from your coursework and exams which you asked for in last years BIG Ballot and this is something that we are managing to change for you as well as a highly successful anti-plagiarism campaign, informing you of your rights and responsibilities when submitting coursework, which also explained where to get help if you’ve been accused of plagiarism. We will be running it again this year, so watch out for more information. Other great successes in the past include tackling the University for a 24 hour Library opening pilot. Students the petition and we delivered! And now…we have 24/7 library opening all year round. We have also worked with the University to get you faster and better timetabling which has already started to come in to affect. For more information about Academic campaigns, check out our website , or come to speak to one of the Sabbatical Officers.

We do this with the help of a Campaigns Crew - students just like you who have a laugh while helping us get important messages out to the masses! Previously we’ve run lots of brilliant campaigns from our ‘Fools Rush In’ housing campaign, to healthy living, to a week long Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance promotion. So, there are plenty of opportunities to learn something new and get involved! They’ll also be Advice days running throughout the year, so you can get lots of info on topics that impact n your lives as students…and maybe a freebie or two! For more info about any of the campaigns running over the year, come and speak to one of the Sabbatical Officers.

Can you amend the sentence ‘There is also a Metro station at the airport and buses run regularly from the city centre so getting there is really simple’ to:
Tyne and Wear Metro is a light rail system with 60 stations serving NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. It has been rated as one of the country’s most efficient modes of transport. Stations are located at the heart of both Newcastle and Sunderland city centres, railway stations and at the airport - so getting around couldn’t be easier.
Haymarket Metro station is the closest station to the main university campus with a frequent service, running until approximately 11.30pm. Find out more at www.nexus.org.uk/metro.
It takes just 22 minutes from Newcastle city centre to the airport by Metro so getting there is really simple.
