RAISE & GIVE Also part of the Student Activities Centre is the RAG (Raise and Give) group which runs lots of fun events throughout the year to raise money for a number of local and national charities. Last year RAG raised over £25,000 and we aim to top that in 2009/10. You won’t be able to miss the excitement on campus with an unbelievable range of activities, so why don’t you get involved in helping others less fortunate than you! The Centre is open Monday to Friday (10am - 4pm)

’ S T N E D U ST UNION!
’ S T N E D U T S YOUR UNION
Our mission is to have a positive impact on your student life, whether that is quality entertainments and bars, a range of societies and fun activities, advice on complaints or problems with your course, or opportunities for you to gain experience that will help you to get a job when you finish your studies. Unlike our high street competitors all the money we make in the bars, shop and food outlets is put back into Your Students’ Union to make sure your student experience is as good as it can be. We call it ‘ Recycling Your Money’. So the money you spend on Saturday’s night out will be reinvested in various aspects of the union to further enrich your student experience; from extra funding for societies, subsidised trips on the ‘Give It a Go ‘ programme and even better entertainments, so why go elsewhere ? Membership to the Students’ Union is automatic and your University Smart Card acts as a membership card. On top of that, the NUS Extra discount card will save you loads of cash at leading national and international stores. So remember to register for yours at www.nusextra.co.uk. Remember, it doesn’t matter how old you are, where you come from, or what you are interested in; we have got something for YOU! Come along and make the most of your University life by getting involved in YOUR Students’ Union.

The Students’ Union is run by students, for students, meaning it’s completely independent from the University. The Union direction is guided by a Trustee Board, including 5 sabbatical officers who are elected by students and through the 37 members of Student Council, who make sure that students from across the University are represented in decision making; you too can make your voice heard. Make sure you come along to the Annual General Meeting and have your say. You can also make your voice heard by voting in e-referenda on issues close to student’s hearts, voting in elections for Councillors or Sabbatical Officers, attending Student Community Forums or contacting members of Student Council who can help make your ideas a reality! rthumbri

The Advice and Representation Centre can help students with any on-course issues or other complaints about the University, however big or small. We will provide you with free, independent and impartial advice on education related issues and may also be able to advocate on your behalf to resolve issues at an informal level as quickly as possible. We run the Community Representative Scheme and the Course and School Representative Scheme with over 1000 active students to ensure the University consistently listens and acts upon student views. We can talk over what will happen at academic hearings before hand, represent you at hearings or accompany you for support. We hope that you have a fantastic time at Northumbria University as the majority of students do, but if you do encounter any problems you can come and talk to us. We’re also interested in hearing from anyone interested in being involved in the representation systems we currently run - get in touch! The Advice and Representation Centre is open Mon to Fri 10.00am - 4.00pm

There’s loads going on, including ‘Give it a Go’ which offers one off taster sessions that any student can try, such as go-karting and scuba diving or trips around the UK. All activities are subsidised and provide excellent value for money. On top of ‘Give it a Go’ we organise regular ‘One Planet’ trips around the country, Edinburgh, Leeds and Hadrian’s Wall are some of our most popular outings.
