Tidal Pavilion
Open to the elements and gently sloping into the sea, the catenary-curved walls of this pavilion frame a natural view within the busy Halifax harbour and provide a quiet and reflective space where visitors can reconnect with the natural rhythms of the Atlantic Ocean.
Extending outward from the beach, the structure minimizes its impact on the only natural section of shoreline in the downtown harbourfront. As guests descend towards the water, gaps between the monolithic walls and the floor echo the lapping water below, while the corten roof allows the elements to enter from above. Finally, the walls open as the floor steps down into tidal pools full of ocean life. As the tide rises, waves play a water organ built into the steps, creating a soothing and meditative atmosphere that changes with the weather and marine conditions.
