HORSHAM STONE 130 million years in the making History... Horsham Stone has a long and fascinating history, dating back over 130 million years. Formed under the English Weald and unique to Horsham, the sandstone is made up of minute grains of sand, which occur naturally in the Wealden Clay. It also contains high proportions of mica, a shiny mineral found in many different types of rock, as well as quartz, which is an abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust. Together these components have formed the stone, which researchers have discovered is over 130 million years old. Over time, layers of sediment further buried the rock until millions of years later movements of the tectonic plates covering the Earth exposed and then eroded the stone. Archaeologists have found evidence of Horsham Stone usage in the Bronze Age, and the Romans used it extensively in the building of Stane Street, the important 56-mile Roman road which linked London to the Roman town of Noviomagus Reginorum, later renamed Chichester. The Roman villas at Bignor and Fishbourne have flooring and roof slates made from Horsham Stone. Over the centuries Horsham Stone has been used throughout Sussex and the surrounding counties in buildings, on roofs, to construct roads and for interior use. Today it may be seen in modern buildings, conversions and restorations as well as churches, palaces and new building projects, where its style and unique properties make it a highly sought-after choice. One thing is certain: Horsham Stone’s strength and durability are without question!

HORSHAM STONE 130 million years in the making Paving & Roofing... Horsham Stone is in great demand for its ability to create a natural, weathered surface, which gives an instant feel of tradition and antiquity. The soft honey-coloured hue of the stone with its tonal variations makes it an ideal choice to blend in perfectly with a wide range of bricks and stone material. The stone is available either sawn, or hand-dressed with fettled edges. Crazy paving is one of our most popular requests and different shaped and sized flagstones will create an individual look. The flagstones can be prepared in random lengths. Horsham Stone paving is equally effective when used for interiors and is ideal for kitchens and hallways. Our flagstones can be specifically ordered to have the famous ripple marked surface or, alternatively, a natural flagstone will consist of a mottled appearance. Horsham roofing slates are the most famous product of Horsham Stone. The stone has a unique ability to be split into thin roofing slates. We produce the roofing slates in the traditional way, using the natural cleavage in the rock to create thin slates of varying size and thickness. Alternatively, we can also offer reclaimed Horsham Stone slates and always have a good selection in stock. We are able to match individual slates to blend in with existing roof slates if required. These can be ordered to any size, as well as being dressed and finished by hand.
