Stopping the Stink You may think there’s only one use for kitty litter and it involves a cat, but there are so many great uses for litter that you may want to grab an inexpensive bag the next time you are at the store to help around the house. Try placing a cup of litter into an old pair of nylon knee highs, tie a knot in the top, and leave one in each shoe overnight to absorb moisture and remove offensive foot stink. You can also get rid of refrigerator odors by placing a cup of kitty litter in the back of the fridge. The same trick works for a smelly closet. Placing a shoebox filled with litter in the closet will freshen up the space in no time. Even camping gear, ski equipment, sleeping bags, coolers, and suitcases can be stored with a sock filled with kitty litter to reduce that musty smell that can come from being in storage. Sprinkling a few tablespoons of kitty litter in the bottom of trash cans or diaper pails can help keep odors down as well. Not only that, but kitty litter can help in other ways you may never have thought of. Did you know a 10 lb. sack of kitty litter can clean up a gallon of liquid? Clean up that spill by sprinkling it generously with kitty litter, waiting an hour or so and then sweeping up the mess. If you grill frequently, you can prevent grease fires by lining the bottom of the grill with a layer of kitty litter to absorb the grease released by your favorite foods as they broil. Just remember to change it regularly when it becomes too soaked. When the snow starts to fly, kitty litter in the truck can add a little weight and if you get stuck in the snow, sprinkling the kitty litter liberally under and around the tires can help the wheels to gain some traction. And, believe it or not, kitty litter can work even better than rice to dehydrate phones and other small electronics that may have inadvertently come in contact with water. Slide the device into an old sock and tie the top to prevent it coming into contact with the litter. Then place the sock into a bag of litter and leave there for a few days or until there is no sign of moisture on the display. Viola – an inexpensive solution that may save that expensive device.

This time of year pumpkins are everywhere. Besides carving them, here are a few ideas for putting those pumpkins to use: Make pumpkin puree – Cut the pumpkin in half, remove seeds and guts, and bake cut down in a baking dish with one cup water for 90 minutes or until tender. Scoop out the flesh and place in food processor to puree. This will store in the freezer for several months and is great in breads, pies, pancakes and smoothies. Make a pumpkin mask – Full of zinc, vitamins A, C and E, this is great for your skin! Mix 5 tsp. pumpkin puree, 3 tsp. brown sugar, and a splash of milk. Massage on your skin in circular motions. Leave on 20 minutes and rinse. Make pumpkin butter – Super easy to make and delicious on everything from toast to oatmeal and pancakes. Add 2 cups pumpkin puree, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup apple cider into a sauce pan. Stir together and add in approx. ½ tsp. pumpkin pie spice and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil then turn down heat and simmer for 25 minutes. Store in the refrigerator in a glass jar. Make a pumpkin shake or cocktail – In a blender, combine 2 scoops vanilla ice cream with ½ cup milk, 3 tbsp. pumpkin puree and 1 tsp. cinnamon. You many need to make more because this is yummy! For those over 21, try placing 1 tbsp. pumpkin puree in a shake with ice and 2 ounces vanilla vodka, a splash of lime and a squeeze of honey. Shake and strain into a glass for a festive treat.
HALLOWEEN WILL BE HERE SOON, ALONG WITH YUMMY CANDY AND A VARIETY OF INTERESTING COSTUMES. BE SURE TO POST THE ATTACHED PUMPKIN SIGN TO YOUR DOOR ON THE EVENING OF THE 31ST IF YOU’RE HANDING OUT CANDY. NO SIGN MEANS NO CANDY. PLEASE NO TRICK OR TREATING AFTER 10 PM. THANK YOU!
