INFORMATION UPDATE! SPRING GARDENING Want to have freshly grown veggies for your table come summertime? Now is the time to start planning your container garden. When purchasing containers, keep in mind that terra cotta pots are porous and may require more watering. Dark colored pots can absorb the heat and if placed in the sun can make the soil too warm for some plants. Treated wood containers can contain chemicals which can be harmful to plants, so you will want to avoid those as well. Be sure to choose containers which are large enough for your plants and provide adequate drainage. Not sure what to grow? Tomatoes are a favorite for container gardens. They are hearty, easy to grow and can be very productive. Peas and radishes grow quickly and without much space or attention. Peppers of all types are generally easy to grow as well and are great grilled or in salads. Zucchini, while a larger plant will work in a container garden and will produce plenty. Green beans can even be grown in a container if you place the sprouts on trellises early on. Lettuce is great in the garden and can be harvested many times per season. Remember to choose plants based on the amount of sunlight you get on your patio, as some plants, like spinach are best with partial shade. Looking to repel mosquitos? Plant basil, lemon thyme, lavender or rosemary, as these plants are known to keep these pests away. Container gardening not only will produce great items for the summer grill or salads, they also look great on any patio or balcony!
