We are quickly moving into Spring, but our skin may still be feeling the harsh effects of the winter weather. Our skin is our biggest organ and it is important to keep it nourished and healthy by hydrating, moisturizing, and exfoliating regularly. There are some wonderful products that you can purchase to keep your skin glowing and healthy, but why not use ingredients you may already have in your kitchen to treat your skin to an all natural body scrub and moisturizer. They are simple to make, can save you money, and recipes can be readily found on sites such as http://www.tipjunkie.com or http://www.diynatural.com. Add some decorative glass containers and a pretty homemade label and Do-It-Yourself body scrubs make a great gift. GROWING HERBS INDOORS - MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPACE! Growing herbs indoors can be easy and beautify your living space. It also adds convenience to a cook who enjoys adding fresh herbs to their culinary creations. In addition to requiring very little maintenance, herbs also require very little space, making them perfect for growing in your apartment. Getting started is easy. First choose a variety of herb that grows well indoors. Basil, rosemary, oregano, mint, and lavender are perfect choices. You can go and purchase potting containers at your local market when buying seedlings, but you can also use any container that will allow for good drainage. There are great opportunities to recycle plastic containers with this project, so don't feel you have to go purchase new containers. Before filling your container with pre-mixed potting soil, be sure to add some gravel to the bottom of the container to help ensure proper drainage for the water. If the plant sits in too much water for too long, this will result in root rot, which will yellow the leaves and eventually destroy the plant. Keep this in mind when watering your herbs and stick to just moistening the soil once every week or two. Find a spot in a window sill or near a window that will provide some moderate sunlight. Be sure to rotate the plant every month or so in order for it to have equal sunlight exposure on all sides. When the weather warms up, it will be fine to place it outside. Be sure to pinch back the plants to rejuvenate them. For soft leafy plants, like basil, pinch off leaving 3-4 bottom leaves to encourage branching. For woody varieties, like rosemary, prune lightly removing only the soft tips. The great thing about indoor gardening is that it will allow you to harvest your herbs much longer than if you are only putting them outside. Additionally, they can be frozen once harvested, which makes them pretty much available year round. And fresh herbs are a great addition to any dish.
