How to Buy Energy-Saving Appliances Article From HouseLogic.com By: Karin Beuerlein Published: June 14, 2011 Is energy performance key for your next appliance or home system? Use Energy Star, the Consortium on Energy Efficiency, and Energy Guide to untangle the options. While you’re shopping for products from appliances to plumbing systems with optimal energy performance - and you are, right? - three rating programs (the Consortium on Energy Efficiency [CEE], Energy Star, and Energy Guide) can help. Energy Star is the name you likely know, but if truly stellar energy performance revs your motor, go straight to the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). What it means: CEE rates appliances, electronics, lighting, HVAC systems, and gas heating systems. At the website, you can download lists of products that meet CEE’s criteria. Do it before you shop because - bummer CEE doesn’t put a label on compliant products. CEE ratings are so stringent that the highest-rated Energy Star products are considered the low end of CEE’s roster (and Energy Star isn’t shabby!): Appliances and HVAC systems are grouped into three tiers, taking both energy performance and water usage (if applicable) into account. •Tier 1 products meet Energy Star requirements at a minimum. •Tier 3 products are super-efficient-the cream of the crop. CEE updates its ratings every month. Pricing: Often high-efficiency products rated by CEE (and Energy Star) are more expensive than their less-efficient peers, but may cost less to operate annually. Speaking of Energy Star... Energy Star What it means: Energy Star (http://www.energystar. gov/), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s flagship label, identifies roughly the top 25% of each product category it rates in terms of energy performance. It’s the best-known and most widely applied green stamp of approval, covering more than 50 product categories,

including appliances, lighting, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems. Bad press leads to more reliable Energy Star ratings Energy Star beefed up its standards after getting bad press in 2010, when the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported it was able to get fake products approved. All products must now be individually reviewed by Energy Star staff and tested by approved third-party labs. But Energy Star is still trustworthy, says BuildingGreen, an independent company that educates building professionals on green product certifications: •Its standards get more stringent every two years to coincide with manufacturing cycles for new products. •It responded quickly after being called on the carpet by changing its product approval process. It’s easy to find Energy Star labels in the store, but if you want to research your purchase in advance, download compliant product lists. Pricing: Often high-efficiency products rated by Energy Star are more expensive than their less-efficient counterparts, but you save money on annual operating costs. Energy Guide OK, one more rating label to add to the mix. You’ve probably seen the ubiquitous yellow Energy Guide sticker on new appliances in stores. What it means: Energy Guide lists the manufacturers’ self-reported performance numbers, not the results of independent third-party testing. Plus, those numbers may not reflect how you’ll use the product in your own home (do you make a special effort to use the most energyefficient settings at all times, or do you dry tons of laundry on high heat?) or the rates your utility charges. So if you use Energy Guide labels at all, use them to compare models in the store in terms of up-front cost vs. annual operating cost. But the labels don’t provide enough context to tell you whether a product is really the best energy-saving deal you can get for the price. That’s where Energy Star and CEE come in. Pricing: Energy Guide labels are government mandated and appear on all products in all price ranges. So it’s not a way to sort by price.

9 Unexpected Energy (and Money) Savers Article From HouseLogic.com By: Karin Beuerlein Published: January 24, 2012 Ack! Our energy costs are going up because too many of us are making the wrong judgment calls about how to save energy. Here’s why we’re having a disconnect. Do you see your energy bills rising even if you’ve implemented up to three projects to save energy? In the first of our two-part Q&A with an expert on consumer attitudes toward energy efficiency, we look at the energy-saving truths many of us ignore. Hint: Replacing windows isn’t your best bet. Tomorrow, we’ll show you what you can do to actually start seeing some savings. Suzanne Shelton is president and CEO of Shelton Group, a marketing agency specializing in sustainability and energy efficiency. Shelton Group’s annual Energy Pulse research report - released last fall - tracks consumer attitudes toward energy-related topics. HouseLogic: So our energy bills are going up? Suzanne Shelton: Yes, for many of us, even though we may think our energy use is going down. HL: How come? SS: Energy is the only product we buy on a daily basis where we have no idea how much we pay for it. It would be different if we had to feed dollars into a machine to make the power run in our homes. The way we use energy now is the equivalent of walking into a convenience store every day and filling our pockets with candy and walking out. Then the bill comes at the end of the month and we’re saying, “There’s no way I ate that much candy!” This is an inherent problem with the way we use energy, or

Granbury Association of REALTORS Page 14

it will be, at least, until we live like the Jetsons and have nifty energy dashboards in our homes. HL: Why are we using more energy now - what are the main culprits? SS: Several things. We simply have more stuff plugged in now than we did five or 10 years ago - Xboxes, electronics chargers, iPads - and some of those things are energy hogs. For example, plasma TVs use as much energy as a refrigerator. They’re getting more efficient now, but if you had the old square CRT and replaced it with a flat-screen plasma, you’re instantly paying the utility much more than you did before. People are buying an Energy Star refrigerator, but then putting the old one in the garage as a beer fridge. For example, a friend of mine was in the process of selling her house. She wasn’t living there and she had the HVAC turned off, but she had an old refrigerator inside, plus a freezer plugged in on the back porch. Her utility bill came in at $50 a month and she was furious. “I’m never there!” she said. “The lights are off, the heat’s off, how can this be right?” I said, “Are your appliances plugged in?” And so she unplugged the freezer and her refrigerator inside. It cut her bill in half. HL: Do we also think that if we’re saving energy in one way, we can use more of something else? SS: Yes. People tell us in focus groups, “I bought these CFLs so now I can leave the lights on and not pay more. I bought a high-efficiency washer and dryer because I want to do more laundry without paying more. I ate the salad, so I can have the chocolate cake.” Psychologists call it “moral licensing,” but we at Shelton Group call it the “Snackwells Effect,” as in, they’re low-fat, so I can eat all of them. HL: What’s the reason for this disconnect? SS: Most of us have no idea how our homes really work, so we don’t know how to make the biggest impact. That’s why consumers run out and replace their windows first, when that should probably be fifth or sixth on the list of energy-ef-

ficient improvements to make, and they totally ignore effective activities like caulking and sealing that cost far less. HL: I’m surprised people replace their windows first. SS: The aesthetic draw of new windows is really strong; we love to be around pretty things. You can also talk yourself into it because you think it’ll improve your resale value. But more than that, if you put your hand up to a window, even an energy-efficient window, you can feel that it’s hot or cold, so people just assume that’s where the biggest problem is. But for the average home owner, new windows aren’t the best use of your home improvement dollar in terms of saving money on your energy bills. Everyone’s situation is

different, but other projects usually cost far less and offer a faster return on your investment. HL note: Consider this: If you spend $12,000 on windows and save 7% to 15% on your energy bill, according to Department of Energy data, when you could have spent around $1,000 for new insulation, caulking, and sealing and saved 20% on your energy bill, you made the wrong choice if your only reason for undertaking the project was reducing energy costs.

5 Tips for Saving Energy in the Family Room By: Jane Hodges Published: March 8, 2011 Reduce your electricity bills by systematically purging your family room of wasteful energy practices. Here’s a deeper dive into ways to have family fun, and save money, too. 1. Select Energy Star-rated electronics The three biggest energy hogs in the family room are the plasma television, DVR/TiVo box, and digital cable box, says the nonprofit American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, which promotes energy efficiency to consumers and government policymakers.

Granbury Association of REALTORS page 18

A typical plasma TV (less than 40 inches) consumes 441 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. That translates into about $50 (based on 11.3 cents per kilowatt hour). Next up are TiVo devices at $41 annually, followed by digital cable boxes at $27. Both devices are always on because they constantly receive and download data.

Opting for an LCD (liquid crystal display) TV, which costs $8 per year to operate, saves you about $42/year. And if you use an Energy Star-rated digital cable box (ask your provider if any are available for free), you could pay 30% less for energy—an annual savings of about $8.50. Energy Star hasn’t yet published data on swapping out a DVR or TiVo device. 2. Reduce standby power Vampire power—the energy that’s wasted when electronic devices are plugged in, but not in use— represents about $100 per year in the average household’s electricity costs, says Energy Star. Assuming the family room represents about 15% of your electricity bill, you could save about $15 per year with smart standby practices. Unplug rarely-used electronics (like that karaoke machine), and cluster other appliances, even adapters for cell phones and digital cameras, onto power strips ($3 to $12 for a six-outlet strip). Power strips allow you to turn off all attached electronics with one switch.

Unfortunately, some family room electronics, such as set-top boxes and downloading devices like TiVo, can’t be turned off, because that would disrupt the digital data-gathering you’ve programmed them to do. But with a smart power strip ($20 to $40), you can turn off your TV while leaving the DVR plugged in. 3. Become computer efficient Your computer eats energy, too. To reduce consumption: Turn off monitors when not in use. Put your computer in sleep mode when you sleep.

Use LCD flat screen monitors, rather than CRT monitors. Switch from a desktop to a battery-powered laptop, which uses less energy. 4. Invest in rechargeable batteries No, they won’t reduce your electric bill, but you’ll save on batteries for your video game system and other entertainment remotes. You’ll help the environment, too. For every rechargeable battery you buy, you prevent at least 500 single-use batteries from entering the waste stream, according to PJ Stafford, founder of Green Irene, an eco-consulting company that provides energy and environmental makeovers to home owners. Rechargeable AA and AAA batteries cost $3 to $3.50 each, versus 75 cents to $1 for disposables; a charger costs $25 to $30. That investment, in lieu of 500 batteries over four years, adds up to $310 to $445 in savings. Call your local trash collection service to find out which batteries can be recycled instead of thrown away. Recycle old rechargeable batteries for free via programs like Call 2 Recycle. 5. Replace bulbs with CFLs or LEDs Replacing an incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED) once was merely a good idea; now, it’s the law. The U.S. has banned the sale of incandescent bulbs after 2012, making energy-saving CFLs and LEDs the bulbs of choice--for the time being. CFLs lower energy costs by up to 75% and burn about 10 times longer than incandescents, although they contain mercury, which makes disposal a bear. In addition, some consumers claim CFLs don’t last as long as claimed. LEDs, on the other hand, burn almost 50 times longer than incandescents and up to 6 times longer than CFLs, contain no mercury, and produce onetenth the carbon dioxide emissions that CFLs produce. They also turn on instantly, where CFLs take time to heat up.

How to Be Energy Efficient at Home: It’s Not What You Do, But ...

Article From HouseLogic.com By: Karin Beuerlein Published: January 26, 2012 It’s not just which energy efficiency projects you implement at home that will make a dent in your bills -- it’s how many. This is the second part of our Q&A with Suzanne Shelton, president and CEO of Shelton Group, a marketing agency specializing in sustainability and energy efficiency. Shelton Group’s annual Energy Pulse research report tracks consumer attitudes toward energy-related topics. Read Part 1, “Looking for Energy Savings in All the Wrong Places.” HouseLogic: Yesterday you told us why we’re so disconnected from our home’s energy use. Today, tell us what we should be doing differently to make our homes more energy efficient. Suzanne Shelton: First, I want to mention that it matters how many energy-efficient things you do. Half of the population say they’ve done two to three things to make their homes more energy efficient replaced incandescent lightbulbs with CFLs, bought an Energy Star appliance added insulation - but most people report that their bills have gone up. HL: So more projects equal more results? SS: Right. Once you get up to the level of making four or five energy-efficiency home improvements, you generally start seeing savings on your utility bill. Depending on the activities you choose and the point you’re starting out at, you can probably expect a four- or five-year time frame for return of your investment. Which means now is a great time to do it. How many of us are stuck in our homes now because of the market?

If you’re potentially four or five years from selling, why not go ahead and make those improvements? You’ll get yourself paid back and live more comfortably and frugally right now, and you can brag about your improvements when you sell your house. HL: The economy is weighing on everyone. If a home owner has just $1,000 to spend on energy-efficient home improvements, what would you recommend he or she do first? SS: 5 things: 1.Caulk and seal all penetrations into the home. I’ll tell you, I had a home energy audit done three years ago, and even though I do this for a living, I was astonished. When the guy walked me down into my basement and showed me all the penetrations from plumbing lines and electricity wires, I couldn’t believe all the gaping holes in my house. Buy a few cans of Great Stuff and take a weekend to go around and seal everything, filling around windows, too. It takes time and it’s a pain, but it works. 2. Hire an HVAC contractor to take a hard look at all your ductwork - are there any ducts leaking that need to be re-sealed? - and give you an HVAC tune-up. You might spend a couple hundred bucks, but you can save significantly depending on how old or out of shape your HVAC system is. 3. Replace all your lighting with CFLs or LEDs. Most people tell us they’ve replaced all their incandescents, but it just isn’t true. The DOE says that only about 13% of sockets are filled with CFLs right now. 4. Program your thermostat. Most people who buy programmable thermostats don’t program them. Continued on p. 25

How to be Energy Efficient (cont’d) If we actually programmed them not to heat the furniture while we’re away, that would be smart. 5. Reduce the temperature on your water heater. The Department of Energy recommends 120 degrees. If you have a tank water heater, it keeps a certain amount of water hot and ready to go all day, so lowering the temperature reduces the energy you use to heat the water. If, after you’ve done all those relatively low-cost things, you want to make a little bit more of an investment, consider adding insulation to your house. No one wants to do these things because they’re not sexy, and they’re kind of a pain, and windows seem more appealing. But I’d do all these activities before I replaced my windows. HL: If you could spearhead an ad campaign to motivate home owners to make more energy-efficient improvements, what would it say? SS: You have to do five things to see the savings you want. That’s actually something we’re working on right now, so stay tuned. Visit houselogic.com for more articles like this. Are You Looking For Energy Savings in All the Wrong Places? Article From HouseLogic.com Published: December 13, 2010 Here are a few surprising and simple ways to cut your energy bill this season. Give your pocketbook and Mother Nature a gift this season by taking advantage of these simple, surprising ways to save energy and money. Put lamps in the corners: Did you know you can switch to a lower wattage bulb in a lamp or lower its dimmer switch and not lose a noticeable amount of light? It’s all about placement. When a lamp is placed in a corner, the light reflects off the adjoining walls, which makes the room lighter and brighter. Switch to a laptop: If you’re reading this article on a laptop, you’re using 1/3 less energy than if you’re reading this on a desktop. Choose an LCD TV: If you’re among those considering a flat-screen upgrade from your conventional, CRT TV, choose an LCD screen for the biggest energy save. Give your water heater a blanket: Just like you pile on extra layers in the winter, your hot water heater can use some extra insulation too. A fiberglass insulation blanket is a simple addition that can cut heat loss and save 4% to 9% on the average water-heating bill. Turn off the burner before you’re done cooking: When you turn off an electric burner, it doesn’t cool off immediately. Use that to your advantage by turning it off early and using the residual heat to finish up your dish.

Add motion sensors: You might be diligent about shutting off unnecessary lights, but your kids? Not so much. Adding motion sensors to playrooms and bedrooms cost only $15 to $50 per light, and ensures you don’t pay for energy that you’re not using. Spin laundry faster: The faster your washing machine can spin excess water out of your laundry, the less you’ll need to use your dryer. Many newer washers spin clothes so effectively, they cut drying time and energy consumption in half-which results in an equal drop in your dryer’s energy bill. Use an ice tray: Stop using your automatic icemaker. It increases your fridge’s energy consumption by 14% to 20%. Ice trays, on the other hand, don’t increase your energy costs one iota. Use the dishwasher: If you think doing your dishes by hand is greener than powering up the dishwasher, you’re wrong. Dishwashers use about 1/3 as much hot water and relieve that much strain from your energy-taxing water heater. Added bonus: you don’t have to wash any dishes. Want some Earth-friendly ideas on how to save money and energy around your home? There’s an app for that — in fact, there are quite a few! We waded through the choices and found four of the best apps for making your home a more energy-efficient place. GoodGuide Many products claim to be green, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re eco-friendly. GoodGuide uses your phone’s camera to scan bar codes, then gives you the real green info on that product from the app’s database, which contains more than 90,000 products. Whether you’re shopping for appliances, cleaning products, food, and other items for your home, GoodGuide gives you a rating on that product’s impact on your health, environment, and community. Set your profile by identifying the square footage of your house, the typical temperature inside your home, how many people live there, and the cost per kilowatt hour in your area.
