MasoniCon 2022 At the end of March, the Grand Lodge of Arizona hosted MasoniCon 2022, a weekend retreat focused on learning and developing masonic leadership. Attendees broke out into 3 groups and were given a series of questions. Breakout teams did some brainstorming and then presented their ideas to the group.

MasoniCon 2022 Master Shi Yanjian This year the Ladies event took an interesting turn as they had a visit from Mark Steuver, a Shaolin Monk, who now goes by the name Shi Yanjian. Master Yanjian began training in 1979 and has 13 Grand Championships in open tournament competition. He is the first North American disciple to become a Shaolin Monk. Brethren, Friends, and Family,

This year, the Masonic Charities of Arizona approved 33 grants totaling $70,000 to worthy organizations throughout Arizona. These 501c3 charitable organizations provide much needed services to their communities all over Arizona. Those services include Veteran assistance, Domestic abuse shelters, child learning disabilities, training and assistance for people with special needs, support for soldiers abroad, adult literacy programs and personal hygiene kits for the working poor and homeless. We are able to award these grants from the income of our investment fund, lodge and personal donations and support from Grand Lodge. In order to keep up with the desire to expand our grant distribution to more organizations and communities around the State we ask for your help. We have registered with the Amazon Smile Foundation. Amazon Smile will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization selected by their customers. For Amazon customers to select the Masonic Charities of Arizona to receive these donations go to http://smile.amazon.com/ch/94-2746389 to automatically select us. Or you can go to www.smile.amazon.com and you will be prompted to select a charity. Now you are ready to shop and support the Masonic Charities of Arizona. The Board of Directors of the Masonic Charities of Arizona extends our appreciation to all of you for your support. Fraternally, Roger Biede III Secretary, Masonic Charities of Arizona www.masoniccharitiesaz.com Rcbthree@hotmail.com

Arizona Grand Lodge Library George Roskruge & S. Barry Casey Masonic Memorial Library & Museum

Gavel Collection Last year, a collection of unique gavels was donated to the Arizona Grand Lodge Library.

The collection includes a gavel made from the wood of Daniel Boone’s childhood home, a gavel made from the original timbers of Independence Hall and a gavel made from woodwork in President McKinley’s home in Canton, Ohio. Our gavel collection also includes a Limestone gavel set from Jerusalem. The handles are made of Olive Wood. In the early 1900’s sets like these were readily sold as trinkets to Freemasons travelling in the Holy Land. The stone is limestone from King Solomon’s Quarry—also known as Zedekiahs Cave. It is often said that these are the same caverns where stone was quarried for the Temple. To the right of the gavel set is a picture of tourists visiting the Cave in the early 1900’s.

Masonic Charity Prometheus 87 WM Jeff Homes and his son visited the homeless encampment near downtown Phoenix known as The Zone to pass out food and supplies. The Zone encompasses several blocks surrounding Phoenix’s Human Services Campus, which contains a soup kitchen, shelter, and other programs for people experiencing homelessness. There are plenty of opportunities to offer aid, including just giving these people an attentive ear. Man does not live off bread alone and perhaps just listening to them

Each month we will share a Trestleboard article from one of the lodges around the state of Arizona. This month, we share an article from the February, 2022 Trestleboard of Yuma Lodge No. 17

A Dose of Masonic Education

Non Plus Ultra By Ben Vik On maps of the ancient world, these were the words which marked the location of the Pillars of Hercules (now known as the Straits of Gibraltar). The words literally mean “Nothing Else Beyond;” and served in that literal sense to warn the ancient sailors of the Mediterranean of the supposed dangers that awaited the foolhardy soul that dared to pass beyond. Of course, we now know that statement to be patently false, and that the whole of modern western civilization swelt beyond those portals awaiting discovery by the passage of brave men, but in Plato in his retelling of the story of Atlantis. One can also imagine this statement sadly inscribed in the mind of the atheist, facing the darkness of his final hour on this earth, bereft of the hope of any continued existence beyond. In this short paper, I would like to present some insights on the symbolism and philosophical natures of the brazen Pillars of Masonry, and end with an allegory drawn from what I believe is one of the most initiatory books of the Old Testament, the book of Ruth. Let us consider the Pillars, now, as they stand in the West. The Pillars are two in number, the number of unity, of friendship, of coming together in matrimony, of togetherness. Two is a deeply human number, as man has two eyes through which we observe and navigate Life, two ears through which we receive instruction, warning, and praise, two hands with which we create, comfort, or destroy, and two feet on which we travel, whithersoever Life leads us to go. This twofold nature expresses itself not only physically, but also as an expression of the duality of the nature of man, the inner workings of the mind. On the capitals thereof, we see globes which serve as the geographic representation of the earth at daytime on the left, and on the right a representation of the Zodiac of the nighttime sky. This interplay of light and darkness, of knowledge and ignorance, of good and bad, true and false, right and wrong; this continually presents itself in the overt actions of men, the victory or the capitulation of our warring inner selves. That these two stand together nakedly before us like Adam and Eve before their Maker, is a testament to that maxim written over the Oracle at the temple of Apollo at Delphi, “Know Thyself.” This serves to teach us not to turn a blind eye to the potential darkness within, but recognize and accept that it is there, and in so knowing, overcome. Masonic Foundation for Children Nearly 4,000 educators trained About MSAP

and 30,000 children's lives affected!

What is the Masonic Model Student Assistance Program(MSAP)? Teachers are not experts in at-risk behavior which is why we developed the MSAP. Our training includes a highly professional and intensive three-day training workshop for Arizona educators to learn to improve their ability to; identify, intervene with, and create appropriate intervention plans for students at risk. This workshop trains a core team of four to eight educators from a school in how to intervene early and effectively with students that display patterns of behaviors that threaten their success at school and life. MSAP involves practice sessions designed to simulate real events on subjects such as: •

Chemical dependency

Depression & Suicide

Conflict, Anger & Violence

Family Dynamics & Enabling

Life Skills Development

Treatment & Aftercare

Communication Skills

Group Process & Intervention
