Grand Lodge of the Month for July 2019 The Grand Lodge of Arizona is Lodge of the Month for July at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Washington DC

Arizona Masonry A Fourth of July to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Happy Independence Day! The morning was started with a solemn reminder that freedom isn't free. Most Worshipful Greg Vasquez, Grand Master of Free and Accepted Masons of Arizona along with his representatives paid honors to those who have paid the price for the freedoms we enjoy.

Arizona Masonry Grand Master’s Trip to Washington DC, July 4th, 2019 This past July 2019 I was accompanied by 25 brothers, their wives/partners, and in some cases kids, to Washington DC on my Grand Master Trip. The trip had a Masonic theme and began with the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery. The Grand Lodge Officers accompanying me were RW JGW Jim Baker, WB SGD George Rusk, WB SGS Leigh Creighton and WB JGS Roger Biede, Grand Orator WB Bo Buchanan, and MWB Bob Bradfield, PGM. The event was very moving and as I stood with my hand over my heard during the playing of Taps, I could not help but feel pride in our country and in our Servicemen and Servicewomen who gave all for our country. The second day we toured the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. For this event our tour guide was Brother Shawn Eyer, Director of Communications and Development. Brother Shawn was very knowledgeable about the GWMNM and regaled us with facts so as to make our visit memorable. Before we started our tour, we had an opportunity to open Grand Lodge before the tour. We filled the chairs and opened Grand Lodge, went from labor to refreshment to allow our ladies and families to enter the lodge room and hear an oration delivered by our Grand Orator WB Bo Buchanan. For the closing I asked the Brothers who opened to vacate their seats and exercising a Grand Master’s prerogative I asked for volunteers to fill the chairs and we closed in due form. The experience was great and, I hope, unforgettable for all who attended. This tour was followed by a trip to Mount Vernon where we toured the George Washington Plantation with some opting to tour the distillery. Unfortunately, we had were pressed for time and had to cut short our tour short.

Arizona Masonry The third day, Saturday, July 6th, we toured the House of the Temple. The tour was specially arranged for our group and I would like to extend a special thanks to Brother Stuart Pool, Assistant Director of Public Relations, for coming down on a Saturday, opening the House of the Temple doors for us and for being our tour guide. Brother Stuart’s knowledge and explanations were outstanding and made the tour very enjoyable for all of us. -

The final part of our trip came as a Masonic tour of Washington DC monuments and buildings. Our guide for this tour was Brother Erick Bauitista. Brother Erick was a very knowledgeable guide and presented us with facts and interesting points about the Capitol, the buildings and the founding fathers.

In all, this was a great event that will be remembered by all participants. I would like to say thanks to all who participated. I would like to express a special thanks to WB Roger Biede, JGS, for all his help putting this trip together and coordinating all the activities and to Brother Bo Buchannan for his efforts in preparing an oration and for being a great” official photographer” throughout the trip. Arizona DeMolay Arizona DeMolay is launching two very exciting programs beginning in July that involve recognizing Senior DeMolay by presenting service pins and beginning an Alumni Association. Along with recognizing past DeMolay, we are looking for our State Officers and State staff to visit Lodges to provide Senior DeMolay with their service pins recognizing those members who have served as DeMolay for 25, 50, and 75 years. I have attached two separate short articles for the Copper Post explaining the two programs. Let me know if you have any questions. I am looking forward to actively partnering with you to feature DeMolay monthly in upcoming issues. Please feel free to contact me with any information, questions or concerns. Fraternally, Steve Johnston State Chapter Advisor

Arizona DeMolay is proud to congratulate the following individuals: Dad Todd Sturner on receiving Advisor of the year. International Congress Secretary Jared Replogle for receiving DeMolay of the year. Emily Zaucha for receiving Sweetheart of the year. And Jack Giarusso for receiving Squire of the year.

ARIZONA DEMOLAY 2019 CONVENTION Arizona DeMolay gathered to celebrate a successful year during their 2019 Annual Convention which was held at Yavapai College in Prescott Arizona, July 12th through July 14th. DeMolay continues to grow and this year’s convention proved to be the biggest yet! Under the leadership of the State Officers, all in attendance were kept extremely busy throughout the weekend with several fun activities, such as swimming, sports, multiplayer computer game competitions, and more. Also, included in the list of activities was a high tech scavenger hunt that sent the members and advisors on several missions. Along the way, each team collected points, and earned school supplies which were donated to representatives of the Prescott and Humboldt School Districts. Over $400.00 in school supplies were donated, which included 10 filled DeMolay backpacks and several filled boxes. Arizona DeMolay is proud to support the local communities we serve, and will continue to do so through the next term year. During the Convention, the newly elected State Master Councilor, Chris Weber presented his “Wild West” themed term to the members and advisors. The upcoming term promises many new and exciting events which will start off with the annual State Honors Night celebration at Sun City Lodge on September 14th. The term will include a membership event, sports event, two induction classes, leadership and life skills training, and a special Day of Service dedicated to providing a service to Arizona Veterans throughout the state. Throughout the year, the State Officers will travel Arizona, helping Chapters to both increase their membership, as well as, build retention. Also, our State Officers and jurisdictional staff have made a commitment to visit lodges throughout the state to honor Senior DeMolay members, and present them with service award pins celebrating 25, 50, and 75 years of service to DeMolay. Most Worshipful Grand Master Gregory A Vasquez attended the Grand Banquet and presented an inspiring speech about dreaming BIG, and never letting go our your aspirations and goals. The 2019 Arizona DeMolay Convention is in the books, and, as we look to the year ahead, we look forward to a year where DeMolay and all of Masonry can come together as one to celebrate who we are and what we hope to achieve. Our Masonic youth look to their Masonic adult leaders for guidance and support, and our Masonic adults, in looking at our youth, cannot help but see the future of Masonry. By working together, this will be a future filled with promise.

Around the Jurisdiction Prometheus Lodge No 87— we had the pleasure of raising our very own Brother Alrick Harris to the sublime degree of Master Mason. It was an all hands on deck event where we had the honor and privilege of hosting and participating alongside some of our Grand Lodge Officers for the State of Arizona during ritual work, including our newly elected Grand Master, WB Greg Vazquez, and our Senior Grand Deacon, WB George Rusk. It's been quite the journey, Alrick. Your patience, and the humility and humble nature you've displayed is something to truly admire and that we should all look up to. The sincerity in your desire to improve as a man is exactly what we are all striving for in our work within the Craft. We are proud to call you our Brother, and look forward to where your journey takes you.

Around the Jurisdiction APACHE LODGE NO. 69 RELOCATING TO APACHE JUNCTION The Masons are coming, the Masons are coming! Apache Lodge is excited to announce, to both Apache Junction and to Gold Canyon residents, that we are relocating to Apache Junction next year. We recently purchased property on Broadway and Ironwood Dr.—just south of the pool supply store (see our sign posted on the vacant lot). For over three long and frustrating years we searched for just the right location. Fate, or Divine Intervention, saved the best option and location for the last. Ideally, we wanted to serve the east valley at a location we would be comfortable with and that has the potential for growth and development. On June 23, 2019 on a Sunday at 10 AM, a modest crowd of 20 men, and women (mostly Masons) gathered in the lot to dedicate a sign announcing our intent to build a lodge. Dignitaries attending the sign reveal were representatives from the Grand Lodge of Arizona, the Apache Junction City Council (Robert Schroeder), and the Worshipful Master of Apache Lodge. Masons are a world-wide fraternal organization that helps men to better themselves through the study of values and to apply that development to helping their community and charitable causes. The most known Masonic charity is the Shriners Hospital. For more information on Apache Lodge, or Masonry in general, contact Brother Secretary Paul Swietek at secretary@apachelodge69.com

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands as the most distinguished monument to Washington ever build by a private organization –THE MASONS Erected in the 1920s and 30s, it soars 333 feet as a beacon of Light and knowledge, educating and inspiring all who visit it. Recognized in 2015 as a National Historic Landmark, the Memorial is one of the most impressive and iconic buildings in the area around our nation’s capital. Our new fundraising endeavor, The Landmark Century Campaign, aims to support a thorough restoration of the Memorial. And we can help! Today, the Memorial is a museum like no other in the world. Everything we do revolves around our vision: “to inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason, and Father of our Country.” Open seven days a week, the Memorial offers detailed exhibits and guided tours that teach the general public about George Washington, his life and virtues, and the role that Freemasonry played throughout his life. Further, the Memorial is an important space for the performing arts, social gatherings, public events, and educational seminars. And, of course, it is an active Masonic temple, housing two Craft lodges and regularly hosting visiting lodges from around the country. The Memorial is a central hub connecting Masons to one another, and connecting the Craft to the public, our nation, and our world For the past decade, the Memorial Association has devoted tremendous energy and resources to the renovation of the Memorial. Major exhibits have been added. Interiors have been repaired and repainted. Lighting has been updated. But the most considerable work is the top-to-bottom restoration of the building itself—the first such renovation since the Memorial was completed nearly a century ago. Beginning at the Memorial’s pyramid level, we have begun a multi-year project to perform all needed structural repairs. Stone by stone, are repointing the mortar and protecting the building from water penetration. When completed, the building will be in

better than new condition.

Your generous help is essential in reaching that goal.

Masonic Trivia Masonic Trivia: In the early 1900's Mexican and American civic leaders met regularly and exchanged views on matters involving their towns. Many, like A. L. Peck, George Marsh, Edward Titicomb, Anton Proto, Ignacio Bonillas, Manuel Mascareñas, and Prospero Sandoval, belonged to the same social clubs. Nogales Lodge No.11, promoted the rapport between both towns. Since no Masonic or-

ganization existed on the Sonoran side, the American group sought and obtained special permission to accept Mexicans as members of their lodge. Mexicans such as Manuel Mascareñas, Ignacio Bonilla, and others became officers of the Lodge. The growing rapport between Ambos Nogales extended to the government of both cities. Town leaders sought to resolve local matters on a personal basis without involving officials from their respective governments. A letter from the leaders of the Nogales Lodge No. 11, Arizona, to Mascareñas, then president of the Nogales, Sonora, city council recognized "that petty international questions are almost unavoidably owing to our peculiar international situation. We believe that such questions, not affecting the dignity of either nation can best be settled among ourselves without involving our respective governments in vexatious international controversies."This collaboration included practical matters, such as commerce, defense, the law, and even personal favors among leading residents of both communities. Masonic Trivia Masonic Trivia: Marcus Aurelius "Mark" Smith was an American attorney and politician who served eight terms as Arizona Territorial Delegate to Congress and as one of the first two Senators from Arizona. As a Delegate he was a leader in the effort to gain statehood for Arizona.

Smith arrived to Arizona when he moved California to the boomtown of Tombstone, where he became one of the first attorneys in Cochise County when Judge William Henry Stilwell admitted him to the territorial bar in 1881. He established a law practice with Ben Goodrich and quickly gained a reputation with his lively courtroom style. An example of this came when a donkey located outside a courtroom window began braying while opposing counsel was making a long speech. Smith used the resulting laughter as reason to object to "two attorneys argu-

ing a case in the court simultaneously. He later moved to Tucson and was a long time member of Tucson Lodge No 4 F & A M Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Arizona.

Masonic Trivia Masonic Trivia: On May 25, 1968 a special communication of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Arizona convened in the Lodge room of Marion McDaniel Masonic Lodge at 1:15 pm for the purpose of Constituting Jerusalem Daylight Lodge No. 66 F&AM. Grand Master G. Melvin Reese welcomed W.M. Goodley to the East, and presented him with the gavel. Brother Jame Corbett, Mayor of Tucson was welcomed, and he read a proclamation designating May 25, 1968 as Masonic Lodge Day. He also named Harry I Goodley a distinguished citizen of Tucson. Goodley, a air force veteran, was a retired lawyer from New York and past director of the square and compass crippled children's clinic
