Grand Lodge F. & A.M. News for January 2022 The Grand Lodge of Arizona has created a new non-profit corporation under the Grand Lodge of Arizona Foundation, Inc. (GLOAF) to serve Masons, family and others in Arizona. The name is Grand Care (GCARE) and it was created to assist with medical care payments if you qualify for aid. Medical payment assistance may include, among other items, reimbursement for part or all of your co-pays for needed medical care by doctors, other providers, medications, payment for prescribed durable medical equipment, payment for lab tests, x-rays, and other procedures. Applications to apply for GCARE should be available from the Grand Lodge website very soon. A Masonic committee will review GCARE applications monthly, in a virtual office, using CDC criteria to provide financial help to Masons and others with chronic-health conditions to receive funds in 2022. Funds will be distributed to Arizona beneficiaries. Arizona Lodge secretaries will be notified annually of the number of persons from their lodge, without names for HIPAA and privacy concerns, who receive GCARE-approved financial distributions. To qualify for the Arizona statewide tax care donation QCO program both Masons and non-Masons will be eligible to apply for payments. Lodges are encouraged to consider fundraisers benefitting GCARE. Businesses, individuals, and other charities can make tax-deduction donations to GCARE too.

Feast of St. John the Evangelist An article from MasonryToday.com

The Feast of St. John the Evangelist is celebrated annually on December 27th and marks the mid-winter. St. John the Evangelist, along with St. John the Baptist are the two St. John's referred to in Masonic ritual. John the Evangelist, also referred to as John the Theologian and the Apostle John, lived from approximately 15 A.D. to 100 A.D. In the Bible, the Gospel of John refers to an unnamed "disciple whom Jesus loved." It is believed the Apostle John wrote the gospel because, in part, the author refers to James and Peter and is not claiming to be either of these two disciples. The writer of this gospel also is writing the Gospel in the light of the Synoptic Gospels which are the gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke. This leads to the conclusion it must be the Apostle John. The term Evangelist comes from a Greek word which means "writer of the gospel", it is also in reference to the Latin word evangelium. In most Christian traditions, the Apostle John is John the Evangelist. John the Evangelist as a historical figure was one of the "pillars" of the Jerusalem Church after Jesus' death. He is believed to be the only one of the Apostles to survive until old age. The other apostles all having been put to death for their faith. Some believe John, around 95 A.D. was exiled to the island of Patmos. There it is believed he wrote Revelations. This is a matter for debate. Many scholars believe John of Patmos was not John the Evangelist. Beyond the Gospel of John, there are many works attributed to John the Evangelist, most, including the Gospel of John are still debated whether John the Evangelist actually wrote them. Some scholars believe the Gospel of John was not written by anyone named John. This debate has raged since 200 A.D. For Freemasonry, the Feast of St. John the Evangelist was utilized by many of the early Grand Lodges in England and Scotland as well as individual lodges. The Lodge of Edinburgh was associated with the aisle of St. John the Evangelist in St. Giles Cathedral as far back as the 15th century. The Grand Lodge of All England, which was a masonic body located primarily in the city of York, as well as it's predecessor the Ancient Society of Freemasons in the City of York, elected it's President and, starting in 1725, its Grand Master on the Feast of St. John the Evangelist. The Antient Grand Lodge of England also elected it's Grand Master on the same day. When the Antients and the Moderns merged in 1813 to become the United Grand Lodge of England it occurred on the Feast of St. John the Evangelist. © 2022 The Copper Post, an Arizona Grand Lodge F. & A.M. publication

Each month we will share a Trestleboard article from one of the lodges around the state of Arizona. This month, we share an article from the December,2021 Trestleboard of White River Lodge No. 62

Symbolism of White Gloves In his book “Natural History of Staffordshire” Dr. Robert Plott, an historian, wrote that the Society of freemasons, in his time (1660), presented their candidates with gloves for themselves and their wives. The presentation of the gloves to the candidate is no longer practiced as a ceremony in England or America, yet the use of them as a part of the proper professional clothing of a mason in the duties of the lodge, or in the processions, is still retained, and in many well-regulated lodges the members are almost as regularly clothed in their white gloves as in their white aprons. The symbolism of the gloves and the apron both signify the same thing; both are allusive to a purification of life. He that hath clean hands has a pure heart. The apron may be said to refer to the “pure heart”, the gloves to the “Clean hands”. Both are significant of purification—of that purification which was always symbolized by the ablution which preceded the ancient initiations into the Sacred Mysteries. “Hands” are said to be “the symbol of human actions; pure hands are pure actions; unjust hands are deeds of injustice.” But while American and English Masonic Lodges only provides aprons, and rejected the gloves as a Masonic Symbol, the latter appear to be far more important in symbolic science, because the allusions to pure or clean hands are abundant in all the ancient writings. Maybe it’s time to consider bringing back white gloves as part of our stated meeting regalia. This would be a constant reminder to treat each other with compassion and respect. Laus Deo One detail that is seldom mentioned is that in Washington, D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument. With all the uproar about removing the Ten Commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., are displayed two words: Laus Deo.

No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less. Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America. Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world. So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say Praise be to God!

Copper Post, January 2022

Laus Deo (continued) Though construction of this giant obelisk began in1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo, "Praise be to God!" From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles L'Enfant ..... a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north, The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west. A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was NOT, is NOT, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy 'One Nation, Under God.' I am awed by George Washington's prayer for America .... Have you ever read it? Well, now is your unique opportunity, so read on... "Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love MERCY, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." Laus Deo!

The Shrine Auditorium The original Shrine Auditorium in downtown Phoenix at Washington & 15th Ave., known today as the Polly Rosenbaum Building, officially turned 100 years old on January 9th. For decades, it was simply called “The Shrine” and hosted many household names in music. At the Grand Opening on January 9th, 1922, the John Philips Sousa Band performed 2 shows. The Shrine was the social center of the city for many years and had the largest dance floor in the city. It hosted many events with famous musicians where dancing was involved. Thank you to Joe Baker at the Jelly Roll Journal for putting this together!

Spooktacular Tours of Kingman Lodge For the last five years, each October, in the City of Kingman, Arizona the “Beale Street Theater” has held the Kingman Historic Ghost Walk Tours on the last two weekends of the month. In 2019 they invited Kingman Lodge No. 22 to participate and the Lodge accepted the invitation. Brother Jed Holley spearheaded the Lodge tour with the assistance of Brothers Bryan Sawyer and Michael Bolton PM. It was definitely a learning experience as with a time limit of five minutes people barely had enough time to get into the lodge room and then they had to leave to continue the tour outside. In 2020 the members of the Lodge and the Ghost Walk committee decided to take the Lodge off the actual tour and instead open the Lodge building to tours at the conclusion of the Ghost Walk. Brother Jed again spearheaded the effort with the assistance of his wife Judy Holley and brother Warren Errington, PM. This turned out to be a wonderful idea as they were able to take ten to fifteen minutes with each tour. During each tour a general explanation of Freemasonry and its rich history were able to be given along with the history of Kingman Lodge No. 22. All told they gave tours to about two hundred and fifty people. © 2022 The Copper Post, an Arizona Grand Lodge F. & A.M. publication

Kingman Tours (cont’d) This year, the Brethren of Kingman Lodge upped their game by not only depending on the Ghost Walk guides to announce that the Lodge was giving free tours, but they also created Facebook events for each of the four nights. Brother Jed again led the effort but this time he dressed as the first Worshipful Master of Kingman Lodge, Worshipful Brother Dr. William Henry Bucher. In addition Pete Strong PM made sure King Solomon was in attendance, Brother Mark Berry assured that Brother James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok was there and Brother Warren Errington, PM, brought Pennsylvania's first Right Worshipful Grand Master Dr. Benjamin Franklin to life for the tours. In addition Worshipful Master Bryan Sawyer made an appearance as a middle ages plague doctor, Brother Michael Bolton PM made a wonderful usher making sure everyone traversed the stairs safely and helping to pass out candy and Judy Holley's assistance selling raffle tickets for a side of beef was invaluable. During the four nights of the tour, over four hundred people were introduced to Freemasonry and hopefully were left with a favorable impression.

Masonic Foundation for Children Nearly 4,000 educators trained About MSAP

and 30,000 children's lives affected!

What is the Masonic Model Student Assistance Program(MSAP)? Teachers are not experts in at risk behavior which is why we developed the MSAP. Our training includes a highly professional and intensive three-day training workshop for Arizona educators to learn to improve their ability to: identify, intervene with, and create appropriate intervention plans for students at risk. This workshop trains a core team of four to eight educators from a school in how to intervene early and effectively with students that display patterns of behaviors that threaten their success at school and life. MSAP involves practice sessions designed to simulate real events on subjects such as: •

Chemical dependency

Depression & Suicide

Conflict, Anger & Violence

Family Dynamics & Enabling

Life Skills Development

Treatment & Aftercare

Communication Skills

Group Process & Intervention
