Together We

Build Freemasonry is a worldwide fraternity and we certainly have a very diverse membership in Arizona and we should welcome and celebrate our diversity. This concept is first introduced to the newly made mason in the Entered Apprentice degree during an explanation of “Brotherly Love”, one of our three principal tenants. It reads in part, “Masonry unites men of every country, sect, and opinion and causes true friendship to exist among those who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance. For me, this is one of the most enjoyable benefits of being a Mason and one of the most important to foster in our Lodges as well as in life. The Motto or Slogan this year is “Together We Build”. I believe this is of vital importance to our Fraternity, our Communities and our Country. Coming together and working with each other in the best interest of whatever endeavor we undertake builds and produces a far better outcome. One that should and will create a greater sense of Pride in our accomplishments through our shared efforts. © 2022 The Copper Post, an Arizona Grand Lodge F. & A.M. publication

The Brenkert Projector This Brenkert projector came to the Grand Lodge Library through the closing of Ray-Winkleman Lodge No. 24 . The projector was used with glass slides inserted through the side that contained hand painted scenes used for degree lectures in lodge. The stand it sits on is a steel cabinet designed to hold those slides. The projector was made by the Brenkert Light Projection Company, formed in 1907, who was a manufacturer of lighting equipment for vaudeville and other live performances. If you would like to see this projector as well as other artifacts at the Grand Lodge Library and Museum, keep an eye out for our Monthly Open House days starting in September.

The Lafayette Apron Marquis de Lafayette Lodge No. 41 Denver, Colorado

An Article from the Worshipful Master in the East, WB Jon “El Maestro” Henke:

I recently had the opportunity to visit a lodge in Denver, CO. In late May, I visited Marquis de Lafayette Lodge #41. This lodge meets in the beautiful Masonic Temple in downtown Denver. It is a traditional observance lodge and their ceremonies were very beautiful and moving. I was welcomed quite graciously. This lodge is in possession of the original Masonic Apron of Marquis de Lafayette, who was quite instrumental in our American Revolution, and was a good friend and Masonic brother of our first president, WB George Washington. Visiting various lodges throughout our country has been my desire for many years and this was quite an exceptional lodge to visit. Their hospitality confirmed to me that brotherly love and affection is prevalent throughout our fraternity, and if you allow yourself, you can always find a brother and a friend wherever you go. You just have to seek them out and find them. I hope you take every opportunity available to you to visit a lodge wherever you travel in this big world of ours. You will be very surprised and pleased with what you may find. There are great lodges and brothers everywhere.

Each month we will share a Trestleboard article from one of the lodges around the state of Arizona. This month, we share an article from the April, 2022 Trestleboard of Oasis Lodge No. 52

From the Marquis de Lafayette Lodge No. 41 website: During America's 50th birthday celebration, Lafayette was invited to tour America. He was greeted with parades and public ceremonies everywhere he went. During his tour, he visited Apollo King Solomon's Lodge No. 13 in Troy NY. At the end of the Lodge meeting, Lafayette presented his personal, hand-painted silk apron to the Master of Troy Lodge, Worshipful Brother Adna Treat. In years to come, the Brethren of that Lodge thought the apron had disappeared forever.

Masonic Apron belonging to Marquis de Lafayette

The apron was handed down to WB Treat's son, who in turn gave the apron to his brother, who some years later presented it to his nephew, Worshipful Brother Nathan O. Vosburgh -then the Treasurer of Albert Pike Lodge. On September 27th, 1928, WB Vosburgh officially presented the Lafayette apron to Albert Pike Lodge No 117. At some point the apron, which was kept in an ordinary picture frame, somehow became tucked into the back of a storage closet. Our Secretary Emeritus, Worshipful Brother Christopher Scott, discovered the apron when cleaning out the closet around 2008. After diligent research which included a call to the disbelieving present-day Secretary of Apollo King Solomon's Lodge, WB Christopher contacted the George Washington Memorial Museum in Alexandria, VA. The museum's director WB Mark Tabbert (author of "American Freemasons") agreed to authenticate the apron.

President James Garfield, Freemason An excerpt from the Marion McDaniel No. 56 Trestleboard

Garfield, James A. (James Abram), 1831-1881. The 20th President, March 4, –September 19, 1881, after nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. His Presidency was impactful, but cut short after 200 days when he was assassinated. Initiated on November 19, 1861, in Magnolia Lodge No. 20, Columbus, Ohio and raised on November 22, 1864 in Columbus Lodge No. 30. Joined Garrettsville Lodge No. 246, Garrettsville, Ohio in 1866 and was its chaplain for the years 1868-69. Charter Member of Pentalpha Lodge No. 23, Washington, D.C. As the last of the log cabin Presidents, James A. Garfield attacked political corruption and won back for the Presidency a measure of prestige it had lost during the Reconstruction period. He was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. Fatherless at two, he later drove canal boat teams, somehow earning enough money for an education. He was graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1856, and he returned to the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later Hiram College) in Ohio as a classics professor. Within a year he was made its president. In 1862, when Union military victories had been few, he successfully led a brigade at Middle Creek, Kentucky, against Confederate troops. At 31, Garfield became a brigadier general, two years later a major general of volunteers. Meanwhile, in 1862, Ohioans elected him to Congress. President Lincoln persuaded him to resign his commission: It was easier to find major generals than to obtain effective Republicans for Congress. At the 1880 Republican Convention, Garfield failed to win the Presidential nomination for his friend John Sherman. Finally, on the 36th ballot, Garfield himself became the “dark horse” nominee and defeated Winfield Scott Hancock for the Presidency. On July 2, 1881, after only four months in office, Garfield was shot twice. The first shot only grazed Garfield’s arm, but the second bullet pierced his back and lodged behind his pancreas. In an era when the practice of medicine was largely oblivious of the role played by germs in illness and disease, a parade of doctors, both at the shooting and in the hospital, poked and prodded Garfield’s wound in search of the bullet. For 80 days the president lay ill before his death on September 19, which was attributed to a fatal heart attack, massive hemorrhaging, and slow blood poisoning. Garfield was buried beneath a quarter-million-dollar 165-foot (50-metre) monument in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.

Arizona Research Lodge No. 1 The Masonic Conspiracy On June 22nd, Arizona Research Lodge No. 1 gathered for their Quarterly Communication to hear a paper on “Masonic Conspiracy” presented by MWB Rex Hutchens.

If this and other topics sound interesting to you, check out the next Research Lodge event in October. Click here to see the full calendar. Or, you can read the full paper in the next issue of Arizona Masonry.

Popular culture often portrays Freemasonry as a giant conspiracy bent on controlling the world. Where does this idea come from? Perhaps it is born from the long history of Freemasonry and revolution as peoples across the world have struggled to shake off the shackles of dictatorship and create a better life for themselves and their families

The Lost Charter is Found! Back in the early territorial days of Arizona Freemasonry we did not yet have our own Grand Lodge. The prevailing rule was that in order to start a lodge, you had to get sponsored by the next closest Grand Lodgeodge. Brothers in Globe went to New Mexico and a charter for White Mountain Lodge No. 5 was created. After the formation of the Grand Lodge of Arizona, White Mountain Lodge No. 5 (NM) became White Mountain Lodge No. 3 (AZ). Sometime in the 1950’s, the original charter out of New Mexico went missing! Over the years, Arizona and New Mexico have gone back and forth accusing one another of stealing the charter (lighthearted jesting). But on June 11th, WBro. Paul Dore brought the charter out of hiding and presented it to the lodge. To read the full story of how it occurred, make sure to check out the next issue of Arizona Masonry!

Masonic Foundation for Children Nearly 4,000 educators trained About MSAP

and 30,000 children's lives affected!

What is the Masonic Model Student Assistance Program(MSAP)? Teachers are not experts in at-risk behavior which is why we developed the MSAP. Our training includes a highly professional and intensive three-day training workshop for Arizona educators to learn to improve their ability to; identify, intervene with, and create appropriate intervention plans for students at risk. This workshop trains a core team of four to eight educators from a school in how to intervene early and effectively with students that display patterns of behaviors that threaten their success at school and life. MSAP involves practice sessions designed to simulate real events on subjects such as: •

Chemical dependency

Depression & Suicide

Conflict, Anger & Violence

Family Dynamics & Enabling

Life Skills Development

Treatment & Aftercare

Communication Skills

Group Process & Intervention
