Printed Every Month 138th Anniversary

Brethren, This has been one heck of a finish to a Masonic year. Be that as it may, I had a really great year and I truly enjoyed representing Arizona Masonry everywhere I visited. I am enclosing my Grand Master’s report for your information. I am proud to have served as your Grand Master and I would like to say thanks each and every one of you for your support throughout this past year. I wish you all the best and I look forward to the day we can sit in lodge together again.

Greg Vasquez Grand Master 2019-2020 1

Grand Master’s Report, 2019-2020 This has been a fantastic year from both a personal and a Masonic aspect. Achieving a goal can be a long journey but achieving the office of Grand Master is a goal and journey like no other. It has truly been an honor and a privilege representing you, the brethren of the Grand Lodge of Arizona.

State of the Craft As I look back at this past year I see where Arizona Freemasonry has made positive improvements in attracting younger men to our fraternity. Membership has been a long running issue with all lodges. Over the years the big worry was attracting new and younger members. Today that is still an issue for some lodges, especially the small, rural lodges where the small population and local economy have a big impact on the community as well as Freemasonry. For some lodges attracting candidates, of all ages, is not the big issue as is retention. All lodges report issues with keeping candidates and members interested in Freemasonry. Some lodges report that some brothers leave just after a few months in the fraternity and other lodges report that long-time members just drop out. On the brighter side I do see some lodges accepting the challenge and developing new ideas or programs to keep their brethren interested and active in Freemasonry. I see business meetings being run efficiently and kept to a manageable time limit and degrees where those participating practice and take pride in their work. I also see education being presented that is interesting and of value to all and most importantly it is a topic presented in direct, or sometimes indirect, response to a request made by a brother.

Improvements Arizona Freemasonry is alive and well and will continue to grow as long as we pay attention to our work, take pride in our Masonic activities, continue to listen to our brethren and provide a meaningful Masonic experience in and out of our lodges.

I would like to thank each of the officers, elected and appointed, for their help and support throughout these past years. Over the past five years we have worked together and set realistic, achievable, long-term and short-term goals and objectives. At the outset of the 2019-2020 Masonic year my goal was to complete procurement and implementation of a new computer system which included up-to-date laptop computers, Office 365, and to become a Cloud based organization. Second, we set out to select and implement a member management system that would bring us visibility of membership and individual lodge performance and to that end Grand View was selected. Both goals came to fruition in March of 2020. A third goal was to complete the closure of Ajo Masonic Lodge No. 36, this goal was realized in December 2019. Other goals are longer term and will continue into the next Masonic year and perhaps beyond that but we are making progress and best of all the Grand Lodge Officers are working as a team.

Grand Master’s Report, Cont. Back to Basics This year the theme was “Back to Basics” and we also focused on the Masonic Family. In keeping with the “Back to Basics” theme we stressed the study of our ritual. We talked with lodges about mentorship and involving new Masons in any and all activities relative to the level or degree they had attained so as to cement their “cornerstone” in the northeast corner making a solid foundation for them to build upon. We stressed education of our new brothers working their way through the degrees and spoke of the fact that all Master Masons had an obligation to mentor those less learned in Freemasonry.

We also stressed the need for Masons to support our Masonic Youth groups and other appendant bodies. Masonic appendant bodies are closely tied to our success and we thank them for their help in building for today, tomorrow and beyond. My travels this year were focused on Arizona Masonic events, visiting lodges and attending appendant body events. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend all the functions and events I was invited to, nor was I able to visit each and every lodge, so to those groups I apologize. However, I did truly enjoy the visits I was able to make. I enjoyed the warm receptions, the “work” of each group, the fellowship, and I especially I enjoyed listening to each group’s successes and accomplishments.

Special Events There were two events this year that I would like to mention. Past Grand Master Nelson pasted away October 26, 2018. On August 10, 2019 Arizona Freemasonry held a Memorial Ceremony to celebrate his life and to commemorate his passing. A memorial service for Past Grand Master Nelson was held at Flagstaff Masonic Lodge No 7, Flagstaff, AZ, and the funeral team from Flagstaff No. 7 did an outstanding job performing the funeral ceremony. Second, in December 2019 I was asked to consider making a “Mason at Sight.” A young man by the name of James “Jay” Andre was deathly ill with a form of brain cancer and not expected to make it to the summer. I was contacted by WB Russel Sayer, Past Master of Scottsdale Masonic Lodge No. 43, and asked to consider making Jay a “Mason at Sight.” It was explained to me that this young man came from a Masonic family and that he had expressed his desire to join Freemasonry and that he had plans to join Scottsdale Masonic Lodge No. 43. Given all this information I felt that Jay was already a Freemason in his heart but that due to his illness his dream of becoming a Master Mason would not be realized. So, on December 19, 2019, at 12:30 pm, WB Russel Sayer, WB George Mather and I went to Jay’s home where I made him a “Mason at Sight.” Brother Andre’s reaction was total surprise and appreciation and total happiness when we put his apron on him. Unfortunately, Brother Jay lost his battle with brain cancer and passed on March 6, 2020 at 5:45 pm. I can still see the happiness and appreciation on his face and in his eyes. This will be an event that I will never forget.

Grand Master’s Report, Cont. The Pandemic I would also like to mention the Corona Virus or COVID 19 pandemic and its effect on the world and especially on the 2019-2020 Grand Lodge of Arizona. This virus caused the world to stop what we were doing and isolate ourselves from our friends and family our workmates, and business associates. It caused the Grand Lodge of Arizona to stop all meetings and business except for what business could be conducted by videoconference or teleconference. In the end I believe we came through this trial stronger and willing to look for alternatives to face-to-face meetings, brick and mortar meeting places, and electronic communication methods to keep us connected with one another.

Special Thanks I would like to express a special thanks to the District Deputy Grand Masters and District Deputy Grand Lecturers, for their diligence and hard work. These individuals donate their time and talents to help support the Grand Lodge in lodges throughout the state. These men are all past masters and can be a key resource to lodges as well as individual Masons. This year we have several DDGMs/DDGLs that are retiring. They are: DDGMs: Vince Santos, District 7, Eric Dupree, District 13, Tony Hernandez, District 14, Matt Morales, District 22. DDGL: Bob Befel, District 2. I would like to thank my family for their love and support and most especially a big thanks to my wife Debbie. Debbie’s support was unquestioning and true and helped to keep me focused. She accompanied me to many places both within Arizona and around the Western States and beyond. She even got to the point of asking “aren’t we going to visit a lodge tonight?” Finally, I just want to say thanks to every Mason in Arizona for their support, their warm welcome when I visited, their Brother Love and camaraderie. I truly enjoyed representing Arizona Masonry throughout this past year. Arizona Freemasonry is alive and well and in very good hands. Keep doing what you are doing and keep moving forward. I wish you the best. Sincerely and Respectfully.

A Special offer from the Grand Lodge of Arizona A very limited number of pad folios were purchased for the participants of the 2020 Grand Lodge of Arizona Leadership Conference. When the folios were not used for that purpose, plans were made to make them available to the Craft at the Annual Communication. However, since the timing and form of the 2020 G/L Communication is still being determined, it has been decided to make the folios available for purchase online. The price is $30.00 (which includes all fees and shipping to anywhere in Arizona). The link to purchase these folios is as follows: https://form.jotform.com/201174163096148… The folios are all black, so it is difficult to capture an image that really does justice to the quality of the item. The Seal of the Grand Lodge of Arizona is displayed on the front.

Shrine’s Ed Marklow, donated the Cobra Tribute bike that was built way back when in 1995. The custom machine sold for $100,000 March 11th, 2020 at the Mecum Auction in Phoenix at Cardinals Stadium, and all proceeds went directly to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children to treat kids in need. The 25 year old bike brings $100k for the kids! BOOM! The bike was build by Noble Shriner John Covington in 1994. John is one of the original 12 Master Mason members of the Rider’s of the 3rd Degree. Feast of Saint John the Baptist

Freemasons historically celebrate the feasts of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist, which fall on the 24th June and 27th December respectively. During the eighteenth century, the Premier Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Lodge of Ireland favoured the feast of Saint John the Baptist to install their Grand Masters, while the Grand Lodge of Scotland, the Antient Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Lodge of All England at York did so on the feast of Saint John the Evangelist.

Pima Lodge No 10 Greetings Friends, I hope each of you and your families are doing well and staying healthy. As my Lodge has had to indefinitely postpone some of our staple fundraisers due to COVID-19, I have put together another small fundraiser, all proceeds going towards supporting the Prince Hall Masons of Tucson charitable programs. I recently designed a Masonic Challenge Coin that will be available for purchase. Each coin is numbered and I ordered 100 to start with. Currently, 18 have been reserved and some paid for, so get them while they last.

DeMolay Arizona DeMolay is launching two very exciting programs that began in July that involve recognizing Senior DeMolay by presenting service pins and beginning an Alumni Association. Along with recognizing past DeMolay, we are looking for our State Officers and State staff to visit Lodges to provide Senior DeMolay with their service pins recognizing those members who have served as DeMolay for 25, 50, and 75 years. Let me know if you have any questions. I am looking forward to actively partnering with you to feature DeMolay monthly in upcoming issues. Please feel free to contact me with any information, questions or concerns. Fraternally, Steve Johnston - State Chapter Advisor

Modern Freemasonry traces it’s roots back to the first organized Grand Lodge which occurred at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern in London, England on June 24th, 1717. Since that time, Masons and non-masons have speculated at the true origins of freemasonry; it’s organization, its rituals, it’s symbolism and it’s meanings. A part of Freemasonry is dedicated to “Seeking further light” which, for us, equates to wisdom, knowledge and understanding. The readings included in this brochure have been selected for those at different stages in their search. Something for candidates interested in learning more, something for the newly initiated mason and something for the more experienced Mason. All of these books have been carefully selected with the input of many men of the craft and it is our hope that you will find them indispensable guides in your further understanding of Freemasonry.

1. The Origins of Freemasonry Margaret C. Jacob Myths persist and abound about the freemasons, but what are their origins? How has an early modern organization of bricklayers and stonemasons aroused so much public interest? 2. Is it True what they say about Freemasonry? Art de Hoyas Mason's response to the misinformation about their brotherhood that exists today. 3. The Great Teachings of Masonry H.L. Haywood Freemasonry has grown to be such a factor in public life that it is being increasing asked "what is it?" and "What does it stand for?"

For the Curious. If you are interested in joining Freemasonry or you just want to learn more about it, these 3 books are suggested as a good place to start in your understanding of the world’s oldest Fraternal organization

This reading list is sponsored by the George Roskruge & S. Barry Casey Masonic Memorial Library & Museum Foundation

1. The Freemasons Guide and Compendium Bernard E. Jones Authentic, detailed information on a wide variety of subjects related to masons and masonry. 2. The Masonic Myth Jay Kinney A nonfiction look at the mysterious and wrongly maligned ancient society. Attempts to debunks the myths as it reveals the truth about the Freemasons, their history, and their secret symbols and rituals 3. A Pilgrims Path John J. Robertson American Masonry and its impact on our country 4. Observing The Craft Andrew Hammer A manifesto of sorts for the observant Mason, who seeks quality over quantity in every aspect of Freemasonry.

For the Initiated. Once you enter Freemasonry, the journey has just begun. You will learn about the various degrees, our ritual, the history and the symbolism. As you walk through the rituals, make friends and travel to different lodges, you will begin to see how the lessons we teach can affect your day to day life. Learning, Living and Growing.

17

1. More about Masonry H.L. Haywood For the one who wishes to advance in Masonic information and become adept and take an active part in lodge work. 2. The Lost Keys of Freemasonry Manly P. Hall Classic work on Freemasonry’s secretive brotherhood. 3. Esoterika Albert Pike Edited by Arturo de Hoyos Publication Date Symbolism of the Blue Degrees 4. Freemasonry: It’s Hidden Meaning George H. Steinmetz Early Freemasonry based on craft labor is known as Operative Freemasonry. Master Masons. Learning is a lifelong journey and that goes for Freemasonry as well. As Masons, we are on a constant journey seeking further light. Perhaps Socrates said it best: The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

MASONRY IN ACTION FOR ALL MANKIND The purpose of the charity is to primarily assist those organizations throughout the State, engaged in relieving human suffering of any kind, which are dependent upon contributions from the public to accomplish their mission.

19

Brethren, Friends, and Family, This year the Masonic Charities of Arizona approved 20 grants totaling $36,000 to organizations throughout Arizona. These 501c3 charitable organizations provide much needed services to their communities. Those services include assistance to our Veterans at the three VA Hospitals in Arizona, Domestic abuse shelters, child learning disabilities, training and assistance for people with special needs, support for soldiers abroad, Adult literacy programs and Personal hygiene kits for the working poor and homeless. We are able to award these Grants from the income of our investment fund, Lodge and Personal donations and support from Grand Lodge. In order to keep up with the desire to expand our Grant distribution to more organizations and communities around the State we ask for your help. We have registered with the Amazon Smile Foundation. Amazon Smile will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization selected by their customers. For Amazon customers to select the Masonic Charities of Arizona to receive these donations go to http:// smile.amazon.com/ch/94-2746389 to automatically select us. stands as the most distinguished monument to Washington ever build by a private organization –THE MASONS Erected in the 1920s and 30s, it soars 333 feet as a beacon of Light and knowledge, educating and inspiring all who visit it. Recognized in 2015 as a National Historic Landmark, the Memorial is one of the most impressive and iconic buildings in the area around our nation’s capital. Our new fundraising endeavor, The Landmark Century Campaign, aims to support a thorough restoration of the Memorial. And we can help! Today, the Memorial is a museum like no other in the world. Everything we do revolves around our vision: “to inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason, and Father of our Country.” Open seven days a week, the Memorial offers detailed exhibits and guided tours that teach the general public about George Washington, his life and virtues, and the role that Freemasonry played throughout his life. Further, the Memorial is an important space for the performing arts, social gatherings, public events, and educational seminars. And, of course, it is an active Masonic temple, housing two Craft lodges and regularly hosting visiting lodges from around the country. The Memorial is a central hub connecting Masons to one another, and connecting the Craft to the public, our nation, and our world.

For the past decade, the Memorial Association has devoted tremendous energy and resources to the renovation of the Memorial. Major exhibits have been added. Interiors have been repaired and repainted. Lighting has been updated. But the most considerable work is the top-to-bottom restoration of the building itself—the first such renovation since the Memorial was completed nearly a century ago. Beginning at the Memorial’s pyramid level, we have begun a multi-year project to perform all needed structural repairs. Stone by stone, are repointing the mortar and protecting the building from water penetration. When completed, the building will be in better than new condition.
