Where Masons share stories of their masonic journey
At the Grand Communication in June of 2022, Worshipful Brother Jim Wild was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Arizona Freemasonry. Brother Jim is a member of Marion McDaniel Lodge No. 56 in Tucson and has been a Mason for over 50 years. Brother Jim was the Jr. Warden at the Lodge in 1970 when John Wayne joined the Lodge. It was on
Steward said to him “Guess who our candidate is tonight?”. It’s John Wayne“. Jim says “I kept calling him Mr. Wayne when he corrected me by saying ‘My friends call me Duke’ so I called him Duke from there on…..In 1972 when I was master of the Lodge, Duke was coming over to see a friend of his get his 3rd degree...so I went out to the airport and picked him up…..took him over to stay at the Aztec in Tucson where he stayed when he came to visit, when he tossed me a 3 ring binder and said ‘you might want to take a look at that—it’s the script of the next movie I’m making’.”

Because I am a Mason
One Sunday evening, a young salesman was driving through the country for a meeting with a prospective client the following morning when his car suddenly broke down. Being Sunday evening, each call he made met with a recorded message informing him that business hours were Monday through Friday. Just at that moment he saw a farmer headed towards him on his tractor. After a brief discussion, the farmer told him that he would pull his vehicle to his home, put him up for the evening, and loaned him his truck the following morning to make his appointment. Beside himself with gratitude, the young salesman marveled at the generosity of the farmer. As they shared an evening meal, the young man saw several pictures of the old farmer with groups of men wearing Masonic aprons. Glancing down at his own Masonic ring that he recently received for being Raised, the young man gave a wry smile and went to bed happy to know that his Brother had recognized his ring and taken care of him.
The following day upon returning from his appointment, the young man found that the farmer had repaired his car. The young man thanked him profusely and told the farmer how grateful he was and how glad he was that he had joined the Fraternity. The farmer gave him a puzzled look and the young man said, “I saw the pictures of you with Masonic Brethren and I know you must have seen my Masonic ring. I understand that’s why you helped me.” The old farmer just shook his head and said, “My Brother, I didn’t help you because you’re a Mason…I helped you because I AM A MASON.”
So, being a good Mason means being a good neighbor; not for the sake of reward and not only to other Masons, but because it’s the right thing to do. Remember the first important lesson taught you in Masonry? Of course it reminds us that we should offer help to a Brother in need, but it begins by admonishing us to offer relief to “anyone” in need. All are your neighbors, and all are deserving of your aid and assistance.

Arizona Brotherhood
A prayer as we grow older
A prayer as we grow older, Lord, Thou knowest better than I knowest myself that I am growing older and will someday be old. Keep me from that fatal habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy.
With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it at all; but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details, give wings to get to the point, seal my lips on my aches and pains; they are increasing, and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of other’s pains, but help me to endure them with patience.
I dare not ask for improved memory, but for growing humility, and a less cocksuredness when my memory seems to clash with the memory of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet: I do not want to be a saint some of them are so hard to live with; a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talent in unexpected people, and give me, Oh Lord, the grace to tell them so.

About MSAP
Masonic Foundation for Children
Nearly 4,000 educators trained and 30,000 children's lives affected!
What is the Masonic Model Student Assistance Program(MSAP)?
Teachers are not experts in at risk behavior which is why we developed the MSAP. Our training includes a highly professional and intensive three day training workshop for Arizona educators to learn to improve their ability to; identify, intervene with, and create appropriate intervention plans for students at risk.
This workshop trains a core team of four to eight educators from a school in how to intervene early and effectively with students that display patterns of behaviors that threaten their success at school and life. MSAP involves practice sessions designed to simulate real events on subjects such as:
• Chemical dependency
• Depression & Suicide
• Conflict, Anger & Violence
• Family Dynamics & Enabling
• Life Skills Development
• Treatment & Aftercare
• Communication Skills
• Group Process & Intervention
