Salamander Hotels & Resorts appoints Bobby Barnes as Director of Golf at Innisbrook Resort in Tampa Bay PALM HARBOR, FL—Salamander Hotels & Resorts has appointed Bobby Barnes as the new Director of Golf at Innisbrook Resort, located in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. The 900-acre golf resort, owned by Sheila C. Johnson, hosts the annual PGA TOUR Valspar Championship presented by BB&T on its famed Copperhead Course March 11-15. With over 20 years’ experience in the game of golf, Barnes has served as Innisbrook’s Head Golf Professional since 2009 and has been integrally involved with the resort’s annual preparations to accommodate the world’s finest golfers. “Bobby is a knowledgeable and experienced golf professional, and is highly respected by the resort’s staff and members,” said Richard Staley, Innisbrook’s General Manager. “And, importantly, he enjoys an intimate knowledge of how the resort closely collaborates with our partners to deliver a tournament that consistently ranks as one of the players’ favorite PGA TOUR stops.” A graduate of the University of Central Florida, Barnes will oversee Innisbrook’s entire golf operation, which includes four championship courses, merchandising for three golf shops, and golf instruction. He will retain his involvement in daily clinics, playing and private lessons, and participation at the Innisbrook Golf Institute. Prior to joining Innisbrook, Barnes was the Head Golf Professional at MetroWest Golf Club in Orlando, FL, while he also spent over a decade working in golf operations for the Walt Disney World Company.

Valspar Championship update The PGA TOUR’s most colorful tournament, the Valspar Championship presented by BB&T, returns to the Copperhead Course, March 9-15. As usual a great cast of PGA TOUR pros will compete over the four days of competition for a winner’s haul of 500 FedEx Cup points and a prize of more than $1 million. The strong field includes Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar and Adam Scott who are ranked among the top 10 players in the world. Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood are English stars who are playing this year. John Senden is the defending champ and other recent winners of the event such as Jim Furyk, Luke Donald, Gary Woodland, K.J. Choi, Retief Goosen and Kevin Streelman will be in the field. Senden recently said that 99% of his fellow pros are fans of the Copperhead, which is noted for its fair and balanced shot values, tricky greens and picturesque blend of pines, sand and water challenges. Beyond the golf action, the tournament will feature the first Valspar LIVE! event with noted country act The Band Perry, recent winners of a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, on Saturday evening after play is concluded. The concert, whose admission is free for all those holding tickets for Saturday, will be held on the Osprey Driving Range. The tournament will once again raise significant funds for area charities and feature free admission for all children age 15 and under with a ticketed adult. For more information, check out ValsparChampionship.com.

From the Desk of the Director of Golf As I write my first monthly edition, I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank all the members that have offered up their support these past two weeks. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to be your Director of Golf and will work tirelessly to continue to improve our golf courses and overall operations. As I’ve shared with a lot of you, my number one and two priorities in this role are to improve our course conditions and member satisfaction. Course conditions include improvements on our driving ranges; as you may have seen already, mats on the driving range are being installed that will allow us a better rotation to preserve the quality of our hitting conditions. I am also addressing our staffing opportunities as I work to create an empowered “Range Team” that will provide more consistency in our driving range operations. In addition to the mats and staffing opportunities, I’m currently working on getting yardage markers on the driving range that will identify the exact yardages to the target flags. Once in place, these changes will provide an overall better range experience for all our guests, and most importantly, our valued members.

Bobby

These are some of the immediate changes/improvements that will be implemented in the coming weeks. Each month in the Pipeline, I will continue to keep everyone informed of the plans and projects ahead. Additionally, I welcome any feedback or suggestions that you might have for continued improvements. Thank you again for your continued support and I look forward to the journey ahead.

Nature Watch: Coyotes

Photographs by Golf Operations Dave Noel People brought coyotes into Florida as early as the 1920s for pursuit by hunting dogs (it is no longer legal to import coyotes from other states). Regardless of those introductions, the coyote’s range expansion into Florida was inevitable. The range expansion of coyotes in Florida and the rest of the country is the result of several factors. For example, coyotes will eat many different types of food, and there have been widespread changes in habitat, which have created more places for coyotes to live. Also, red wolves are no longer present, so coyotes have less competition to deal with. Coyotes also benefit from having a large number of pups in each litter (an average of 6 pups, but that number can range from 2 to 12) and a short amount of time before pups reach adulthood. They are more active at dawn and dusk but can be seen almost anytime during the day or night. Coyotes can occur singly, in pairs or in small family groups. Home ranges typically average 5-10 square miles. They breed once per year during winter months, denning in thickets, brush piles, hollow logs or burrows.

Several coyote attacks on dogs and cats have been reported over the past few years in Florida. In some cases, pet owners were present at the time of the attack. However, no humans have been the target of attacks in Florida. Article from the Florida Wildlife Conservation

pipeline | 17

Coyotes have not caused major changes to Florida’s ecosystems (that is, no extinctions or large declines in numbers of any native species). However, when they prey on threatened or endangered species (for example, on sea turtle eggs), localized control measures have been required. The red wolf has been eradicated from Florida and some biologists believe that its role has been partially filled by coyotes because they prey on some of the same species and may interact with competing carnivores in a similar manner.
