Dear Members, Welcome to spring! Let me start by congratulating Jordan Spieth for winning the 2015 Valspar Championship on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort. This year was truly exciting and we’re already looking forward to Valspar’s return to our sister property, Innisbrook. April brings us a lot of exciting and fun family activities this month. Hammock Beach has plenty of Easter activities for everyone such as Easter egg dying, an Easter Bunny garden party, Easter egg hunts, and an Easter Sunday brunch in the Atlantic Grille or aboard our Sundancer Yacht. Feel like you’re at Augusta and head to Loggerheads Lounge to watch the Master’s Tournament on April 12 beginning at 1 p.m. Loggerheads will feature a special menu for you to enjoy while you catch the tournament. For more information about upcoming activities and events at Hammock Beach, please contact Marianne Murphy. Our public relations team has also been hard at work getting the coverage for Hammock Beach and our sister properties. Advisory Board of Governors Update, b y Pre si de n t B o b VanN o s t rand
At this month’s meeting, considerable time was spent on the issue of the ABOG’s role in the Lodge project. Input from members ran the gamut from watch dog to what seemed to be almost a project manager role. After a one on one meeting with Tim Digby as well as discussion at the February ABOG meeting, the following was agreed upon: • ABOG will work with Club Management to identify all of the various promises that were made by Salamander personnel as an inducement for member support of the project • The Club will then assign start and end dates to each of those portions of the project that make the above list • At the Monthly Member & Manager meetings, the club will provide updates on each item on the list, with emphasis on any item that has a change in its timetable - either favorable or delayed • The ABOG will endeavor to keep the membership apprised through its various communication sources as well as through word of mouth The ABOG Social Committee, chaired by Jan Cullinane, has been working hard to deliver on its stated objective of providing “off campus” events that include transportation. Working on a tight timeframe - they were able to put together a very cost effective package for the “I Love Lucy” theatre presentation in Jacksonville for Sunday March 22nd - one that included an $80.50 individual ticket and bus transportation for $75. In the process of doing this, the committee found that events like concerts and plays typically do not schedule out more than 3-4 month in advance - which obviously impacts our ability to package these offerings. Nonetheless, the positive response to the first offering suggests more to come. These events must have hard and fast cut off dates as tickets must be purchased in advance, and we had to turn several people away from our first event who attempted to sign up after the cut-off date. To better tailor these events to members, the Social committee came up with a short focused survey and circulated that to the membership using Survey Monkey. We had over 120 responses, most of which included specific comments and recommendations. In the area of “off campus” entertainment, the results were as follows: • Concerts 77%
• Plays 72%
• Art Festivals 51%
• Shopping 33%

The Committee thanks all the responders and will use this information in evaluating future offerings. Lastly, the main topic of conversation at the February ABOG meeting was the issue of timely RSVPs to member events. The main issues are Reservations after the RSVP deadline, Walk-ins with no reservations and No shows who do not contact the membership office to cancel. This has been a much discussed topic the past two years, but with increases in attendance at membership events at an all-time high, unfortunately the numbers in each of these categories is actually getting much worse. The Club has invested in a new website that will be rolled out with the next month or so, and that website has much improved functionality for members including: • Ability to RSVP for all club events (tennis, fitness class and restaurants - for now) • Generation of an automatic email confirmation • Ability to create a waitlist for over-subscribed events and generate an email confirmation • Ability to generate an attendee list at any time for any event The ABOG and Club have decided that any changes to the reservation process will await not only the implementation of the new system, but also a period of time to allow members to be accustomed to the new system. But I’d like to give you all a heads up to the changes that will be coming: The Club will only accept reservations made through the website - no longer accepting phone calls, emails or walk-in RSVPs • Each club event will have a REPLY BY date established that will be enforced • A last call RSVP reminder will be sent out by the club before the deadline • A reservation list will be attached to that last call reminder so everyone can • see if they are registered
• cancel if necessary
•R SVP if not on the list
• All event attendees must check in with the membership personnel to be “counted” • All walk-ins without reservations will be politely denied admission • Club personnel will retain complete discretion in policy enforcement in order to address unusual circumstances One change the ABOG made effective in APRIL is it voted unanimously to end the practice of allowing guests of members and extended family members to attend the Member - Manager Receptions. We previously instituted a guest fee to discourage this practice, but with this event’s attendance the last few month exceeding 300 - we felt it necessary to protect openings for members. For now, this policy does not extend to Member Mixers as attendance there has not been as big of an issue. Once again, on behalf of the entire ABOG, I thank the majority of members who already routinely follow appropriate RSVP protocols! If you have any thoughts on any of these topics – feel free to share your thoughts with me or any of the ABOG representatives. Minutes are available for your review on the member website.

Develop consistency with the 30 to 50 yard wedge shot
CORRECT
INCORRECT
by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf at The Hammock Beach Resort Having the ability to hit more consistent short wedge shots will lower your score significantly. The 30 to 50 yard wedge shot falls right into our scoring zone area and is crucial to execute for scoring well. This shot is typically challenging for the mid to high handicappers because the swing required is ½ to ¾ of our regular swing, which becomes difficult to gauge. So, if you find yourself hitting this shot too far, fat, short or if you feel like you’re totaling guessing as to the distance of this shot try the tip below the next time you’re practicing. Simply feel your left elbow stay closer to your belly button to complete your backswing. Typically, people who lose feel and control in this shot have their left arm out of position. Their left arm will break down and tend to go too far back in the swing when completing the backswing. When this occurs, the club is swung too much with the arms and not enough with the body, which makes the swing disconnected. By feeling the left elbow stay on the mid-section of the body at the top of the backswing, you will feel more connected and your arms and body will work in sync with each other. So remember, to hit more consistent short wedge shots, keep that left elbow close to your belly button at the completion of your backswing. Having the ability to hit it closer on this shot will greatly enhance your ability to score well. Good luck and play well.

TENNIS TIP
The serve: Platform Stance or Pinpoint Stance?
1
2
4
3
When using a platform stance on the serve, you should start by positioning your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart. At the moment of the toss when you release the ball, you should press down with both feet into the ground and bend your knees. Many players prefer to use a platform stance as they feel it keeps them nice and balanced before and during the shot. One of the problems some players experience that use a platform stance have is getting their weight transferred forward as they spring up to strike the ball.

One of the key questions when serving is whether one should keep their feet apart (platform stance) or bring them together (pinpoint stance) during the process.

PINPOINT
PLATFORM
By Gene Paul Lascano, Tennis Director
When using a pinpoint stance, the player starts with both feet apart similar to a platform stance. Once they release the toss, they step or slide their rear foot forward to join their front leg to a single “point” as they bend their knees. Some feel that this method is better as it gives them some initial momentum going forward. One of the drawbacks however is that if you are not careful, you might be prone to foot faults. It also adds an additional step to the serve which some players feel can already be a very difficult shot to begin with. One of the most underused muscle groups when serving are the player’s legs. Using a deep knee bend when serving can add a bit of extra pop if you can sequence it just right. Choosing a stance is really more about personal preference---it’s just a matter of figuring out what works best for you.
