Draw by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf During the course of a golf round, you will find yourself in a position where you have to shape the golf ball. The key to consistency is to be able to change your setup and use the same golf swing. Golf is hard enough with one golf swing we do not need more golf swings.
1. Close the clubface by turning the club slightly toward the left (counter clock wise) and then take you normal swing grip.
A draw for a right handed golfer is a shot that starts to the right of the intended target line and then spins left towards the target (It is the reverse for a left hander).
4. Swing the club down your body line.
2. Align your golf club toward where you want the ball to finish. 3. Align your body to your intended starting point. 5. Finish with the club “LOW”. The trajectory of a draw is normally much lower than a regular golf shot and the ball fly’s much longer so it is recommended to take a more lofted club then you normally would use.
To be able to hit a draw there are a few changes to your setup that you need to make.

Imagine if before each of your returns, your opponent told you exactly where and how they were going to serve to you? The funny thing is they actually do, but just not with words. Here are few simple things to be aware of to help you get one step ahead on the server. You can get a heads up on the server’s intention based on where they position themselves at the baseline. If they stand close to the center mark, there is a good chance you’re opponent will be going down the “T”. A server that stands closer to the alley may be looking to serve the ball out wide, so be sure to move a step or two behind your alley. Another key element is being able to read your opponent’s toss (see photo). This will give you an idea on what type of serve they intend to hit. If they toss the ball out in front and in line with their hitting shoulder, expect a flat, aggressive serve. If the toss is out to the server’s right (left for lefties), it’s probably going to have some slice. A toss behind the head is a great cue for an incoming kick serve. Slice serves are designed to pull returners out of position and tend to have a left-to-right break on them. They are most effective when executed from the deuce side of the court. Kick serves on the other hand are better utilized when hit to the ad court. They bounce high and to the left taking the ball out of the strike zone.
Always Be One Step Ahead Against a Tough Server
Finally, know the score. A server’s habits can change based on the game score. If the score is 40-Love, expect the heat. At 30-30 in a big game, they’re probably going with their most reliable spin serve. And down 15-40, they’re just going to put the serve in play. It is often said that “the serve is the most important shot in tennis”. If that’s true, then returning a serve back should be your next priority. Be sure to pay special attention to the tendencies of your opponents and you’ll always be ahead of the game!

All levels of Play Welcome! $20 per Member (plus tax and service charge)

Racquet Tune-up As we head towards to the fall season, it may be time to check your strings and grip. The string manufacturers recommend you re-string your racquet as many times a year as you play per week. (So if you play 3 times a week then every 4 months). Even if your strings haven’t broken, they will begin to lose their playability. A new replacement grip or overgrip will help cushion the impact and also stop the grip slipping in your hand. For the month of August, we will offer an additional 10% off on top of your member discount on any restrings or grip replacements. Our staff is always happy to inspect your racquets and restring and or re-grip as necessary. Stop by the Tennis Center and we’ll have a look and get you ready for league tennis and the fall season.

Want your students to have a higher GPA? Make sure they work out! by Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness Sometimes I feel like I am preaching to the choir but the evidence demands that we focus on what research tells us. In a study released by Michigan State University recently, it showed that freshmen and sophomores who were members of recreational sports and fitness centers on campus had higher GPA’s than their counterparts that did not. The study released in the most recent issue of Recreational Sports Journal cited findings from James Pivarnik a professor of Kinesiology and Doctoral Student Samantha Danbert. While the difference in GPA’s was not staggering .13 higher, what is compelling is that these students were able to perform better while investing time in their physical wellbeing. The more impressive statistic is that of the students considered, 74% of the freshmen that were members went on to be sophomores compared to 60% of the nonmember freshmen. I will certainly cite this for my son who has struggled at times to balance the time demands of school with the need for regular exercise. The research is purely statistical in nature and does not account for students exercising outside of the schools facilities or even the regularity of exercise of those with memberships. It can be said that the implied “contract” a student makes in joining a facility is indication of their commitment to being the best student that they can be. So before sending your sons, daughters, grandchildren off to college, you might want to consider how they will be able to regularly exercise as well as where the library is located.
