innisbrook pipeline

Dear Members, It’s hard to believe it’s already August! This month is a very special one for the Salamander family – we will officially celebrate the one year anniversary of Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, VA on August 29. In other exciting news, our sister property, Hammock Beach Resort, has been named the top Florida resort in the Continental U.S. on Travel + Leisure’s 2014 “World’s Best Awards” list. August is an exciting month here at Innisbrook, too. Although summer is winding down, there is no shortage of summer fun at Innisbrook. Market Salamander Grille and Packard’s Steakhouse are both offering its ‘100 Days of Summer’ menu until Labor Day. On August 23 Innisbrook hosts the USTA ROGY Tournament. The tournament or “Tourn-Event” is a fun, new way for youth tennis players to gain experience on the court by playing in no-pressure competitive matches. For more information on member activities and events, please contact your membership office. Our public relations team has also been hard at work getting the coverage for Innisbrook and our sister properties. We are excited to share these great stories about our properties: Introducing Golf To Kids: Directory Of Learning Programs, Family Travel Forum 31 Awesome Packages in Florida, VacationIdea.com Golf as a Business Tool: How to Navigate on the Green, BlackEnterprise.com Top things to do in North Pinellas the weekend of July 4, Tampa Bay Times Hammock Beach Resort makes top resorts list, Daytona Beach News-Journal Yours in hospitality,

Update on Course Improvements from

Richard Staley Improvement initiatives from our Golf Operations and Golf Grounds departments to address our ongoing dedication to improvement. Equipment Purchase: · Phase One equipment due diligence and contract negotiations in process. Completion target date September 15 · Included in Phase One purchase: Fairway mowers, Rough mowers, Triplex greens and tee mowers, walking greens mowers, rollers, aerators, sprayers

Chemicals and Fertilization: · Ronstar applications for pre-emergence treatments of weeds · Additional fertilization applications · YTD increased spend on these initiatives by $85,000 over previous year

Tees/Fairways: · Tee boxes on all courses, especially on Copperhead, are currently being evaluated. We will recommend expansion of boxes that are noted as too small to handle the current traffic. This work will likely be timed in conjunction with green replacements, as this a good source of reclaimable materials.

pipeline | 4

· Golf Pros will assume a larger role with the assistance of the Grounds Superintendants to ensure that tee markers are rotated effectively to allow uniform tee box wear and healing. Maximizing the mowed usable area on existing boxes is also vital. Expanded boxes where necessary will facilitate this objective. · Evaluate north and south course tee boxes, where applicable, to determine whether additional sprinkler heads are necessary to cover areas that don’t get adequate irrigation. · Increase the use of roping to designate “ground-under-repair” areas and direct cart traffic away from excessively used and/or damaged cut-through routes.

Greens: · To protect practice greens during Junior, Charity and U.S. Kids Tournaments, utilize roping to restrict access to players only, as with our PGA Tournament, thereby reducing foot traffic and damage. · Use rope and signage on the approach to all greens from the fairways to direct cart traffic away from green fringes and bunker edges. · E valuate course greens, where applicable, to determine whether additional sprinkler heads are necessary to cover areas that don’t get adequate irrigation. · #1 Green renovation on the South Course should reopen in the next 30-60 days.

Bunkers: · Evaluate a sand “Flashing” program to maintain a consistent depth and quality of sand in course bunkers. Copperhead bunkers in their entirety will be addressed separately in its course improvement plans as PGA specifications and restrictions will apply. · Increase diligence in replacing sod and bunker edges from Sand Pro equipment exits. · Institute targeted fertilization program for bunker surrounds. · Soften extremely peaked bunkers to avoid washout damage and turf damage from heavy rains.

Driving Ranges: · Utilize the golf operations and range staff to help monitor the rotation of the hitting stations and fill the divots with sand on a daily basis. · Investigate and evaluate bids for installing permanent range mats for each range to augment the grass areas. When possible, restrict large outings, various tournaments and junior events to mat usage and preserve the grass hitting areas. · Increase our range ball par and quarterly purchases to accommodate activity and maintain ball integrity. · Purchase two new range ball pickers to increase efficiency, productivity and reduce ball damage.

Specifically Copperhead golf course improvements for 2015 Valspar Championship: Greens: · Moisture meters have been purchased and mapping of problem areas have been completed · Irrigation sprinkler added to back left 17 green for problematic area · Purchase new floating head walking greens mowers in phase one purchase

Tees: · Leveling and expansion of #13 and #14 tees in progress. · Tree thinning in progress · Expansion of tees on #3, 4 and 11. Est. 10,050sq.ft.

Fairways: · Aerification complete. Lower lying holes one extra aerification. All fairways verticut. · Top dressing of fairways Est. 575 tons sand · 2 added wall to wall fertilizations pre tournament

Bunkers: · This year we have implemented fertility program for bunkers

Practice facility: · Chipping green area has been reshaped and sprigged

Table Talk with Chef Andrew Coniglio Florida Seafood Steamer Pot August and September is a great time to gather with friends and family to have a New England style clambake with a Florida Twist. This month’s recipe is on how to build the steamer pot with all the trimmings. When building your pot it is important to set the layers properly to ensure all ingredients are cooked at the same time.

Yield: 4-6 people • 4 Pounds Fresh Seaweed • 2 Pounds Baby Red Potatoes (scrubbed and left whole) • 6 Ears of Corn (shucked and cut in half) • 4 Each Bay Leaves • 2 Ounces Old Bay Seasoning • 2 Pounds Chorizo Sausage Links (sliced) • 1 ½ Pounds Clams (in shell, scrubbed) • 1 Pound Unpeeled Gulf Shrimp

(devein but leave shell on) • 1 Pound Mussels (cleaned and debearded) • 1 Can Chicken Broth (48 ounces) • ¼ Cup Dry Vermouth • ½ Bunch Chopped Cilantro • ½ Bunch Chopped Parsley • 1 Pound of Butter (cubed) • Salt & Pepper To Taste

Method 1. In a tall stock pot put a layer of the seaweed (half the amount) and top with the baby potatoes and then corn on the cob. 2. Pour half your chicken stock, bay leaves, old bay seasoning and a touch of salt and pepper. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes to get the potatoes started. 3. Uncover (be careful of the steam) and start layering the rest of the ingredients in the order of chorizo, clams, shrimp, mussels. 4. Add cilantro, parsley, rest of the broth, vermouth and butter. 5. Place the other half of seaweed on top, cover tightly (use tin foil if needed to create a better seal). 7. Uncover and remove the layer of seaweed (discard). 8. All mussels and clams should be open and potatoes fully cooked (if not you can cover and cook another 15 minutes). 9. Serve with drawn butter and a nice crusty French bread to soak up all the flavor.

6. Bring to a boil and cook on a medium simmer for about 30 minutes.

A Golfer’s “Almost Glory Story” George and Heidi Shimp and Wanda and Dexter Cook were playing the North course on Memorial Day when the “Almost Glory Story” took place. Shortly after George put two balls in the water on hole #3 in his embarrassment he quickly grabbed a third ball from his bag and hit it across the water onto the green. When they got to the next hole a par 3, Dexter hit first and put his ball on the green. George hit next off to the right in what seemed to be the woods. All four looked for George’s ball in the woods but couldn’t find it. Wanda walked onto the green to putt and saw a ball in the hole. She asked George what he was hitting. Because George had just grabbed a ball from his bag, he didn’t know. As the rule

goes if you can’t identify the ball you can’t call it a hole in one. As the group caught up with the couple in front of them they asked if they had left a ball in the cup and if either of them was using a Titleist? No to both was the answer. So was it actually George’s missed hole in one?

Hole in one Congratulations! Congratulations to Jeff Pett for his 5th Hole in One which he made on Copperhead’s #4 on May 31. Jerry Weeks is to be congratulated as well for his Hole in One on July 3 on Island’s #8 using a 5 wood for 165 yards. Congratulations to both Jeff and Jerry!

Nature Watch: Osprey goes to rehab Written and photographed by Golf Operation’s Dave Noel On May 21 an injured Osprey limped out into the Osprey driving range. Barb Walker from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey was contacted but was unable to come to Innisbrook for the rescue. She gave instructions on how to catch the bird and put it in a box until she could arrive. Range attendant John Nauta ran the ball picker 50 yards in front of the bird to distract the bird’s attention while I was able to come up from behind the Osprey and quickly cover him with a blanket. The Osprey did not put up a struggle as he was placed gently into a large cardboard box. When Barb Walker arrived she identified this to be an adult Osprey and noticed the right foot had been chewed off, probably by a gator or snapping turtle while the bird was resting in the water. Barb Walker took the bird to a rehab center for birds of prey. If you encounter wildlife that has been injured contact FWC Wildlife Alert at 1.888.404.3922. For birds that have been injured contact the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey at 1.888.404.3922.

This young female osprey was grounded on the 12th hole on the Copperhead golf course. She was too weak to fly back into the nest, so she sat exhausted on the course. In attempt to get away she flew about 30 yards into a fresh water pond. As she was unable to get out I quickly jumped into the water for the rescue. She grabbed the blanket I held as a life preserver. After she was rescued she was then was put into a large cardboard box to await a pick up by the Audubon Center. Before Kim with the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey arrived there was time to dry her wings and feathers. According to Barb Walker of the Audubon Center, June is the highest month for osprey morality. Innisbrook is home to many families of ospreys with nests lining all four courses. Hopefully this young osprey will rebound and be able to be released back into the air.
