Bunker renovations at the Ocean Course began in September, starting with the 11th hole and with specific bunkers on holes 3, 7, 8 12 and 16 earmarked to undergo renovations for a total cost of $80,000.

2.

On the 11th hole, we will be re-shaping the bunker, raising the floor of the bunker and creating a grass boarder around it to help reduce water intrusion. The middle fairway bunker on this hole will receive the same treatment.

The photos of the work in progress on hole #11 numbered 1 and 2 depict the beginning of the renovation process. Photo 3 shows the re-shaping of the bunker edges. Photo 4 begins the raising of the floor of the bunker while photo 5 depicts preparing the drainage lines and photo 6 reflects the sand installed and waiting for sod. Photo 7 is the finished bunker. Golf Tip: Chip and run with a 3 wood by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf of Hammock Beach Today’s tip will help you with a tricky shot that happens all too often. Today’s tip takes us to the base of the green on 2nd hole at the Conservatory or the 15th hole on the Ocean Course. If your second shot comes up short, your ball will more than likely roll back down into this collection area. This shot is extremely difficult as you must get the ball up and over the false front of the green. Many times I see players trying to lob the ball up over the hill with a sandwedge, resulting in leaving the ball short. The secret to this shot is to play a low running shot, not a high lob shot. Choosing a 6 iron or putter are good choices, but next time try your 3 wood instead.

4

Simply play the shot as you would a basic chip shot. In your setup, place the ball position in the back of your stance and let the face of the club stay square to the target. The swinging motion with your arms would be similar to a hybrid swing between a putting and chipping stroke; keeping your body very still with no weight shift, let your arms come back with a slight hinge in the wrists. Feel the clubhead stay low to the ground on the way back and on the way through to your finish. By using a 3 wood for this shot, you will let the mass of the clubhead do the work for you. You will be amazed at how much easier it is to run the ball up the hill. It is worth your time to take several minutes to practice this shot; it really only takes about 30 balls of practice before you start to get the feel for this shot.

TENNIS TIP

Tennis Elbow Prevention by Gene Paul Lascano, Head Tennis Professional

Tennis elbow occurs when a specific tendon on the outer arm is irritated, inflamed, or damaged as a result of the repetitive twisting of the forearm and elbow from activities such as tennis, golf, baseball throwing, and bowling. Athletes who develop tennis elbow often complain of a knife-like pain on the outer part of the elbow. Here are a few things you can do to prevent tennis elbow: The best thing to do is to focus on preventing tennis elbow. However if you are already feeling the effects of tennis elbow, applying ice to the affected area can help reduce the inflammation. Other forms of treatment include using a properly designed tennis elbow brace/band, strengthening exercises, and of course lots of rest.

CHECK YOUR GRIP SIZE: Start with a grip that matches your hand; a grip too big or small will make you have to work harder. While gripping your racquet, you should be able to fit the index finger of your non-hitting hand in the space between the ring finger and palm (see photo). CHANGE YOUR EQUIPMENT: Believe it or not, a head light racquet with a bit of weight is actually better for tennis elbow than a light and stiff racquet. Also, softer strings like natural gut significantly reduce the amount of vibration that travels through the racquet. Lowering your string tension can reduce the stress on your elbow as well. The less vibration that reaches your elbow, the less likely the tendon will flare up.

The good news is tennis elbow is treatable. If you have the right equipment and right instructor, you can become an even better player---without the discomfort. Good luck and happy hitting!

USE PROPER BACKHAND TECHNIQUE: The backhand stroke is most commonly responsible for tennis elbow injuries. Poor form on the backhand can cause a player to mistime their shots, causing their arm to do most of the work. Having a skilled instructor evaluate your backhand and teach proper technique is essential to avoiding tennis elbow.
