General M a n a g e r ’s
C O R N E R DEAR MEMBERS: It is hard to believe the holidays are already upon us along with the end of my first year as General Manager of Hammock Beach Club. It has been a wonderful experience and I appreciate and thank everyone for the warm welcome extended to Gail and me. Every day I learn something new about the Club and enjoy meeting so many members.
The Quarterly Member Activity Guide, new this year, contains a wealth of information about the events for this quarter, along with our Member Concierge service and Reciprocal Program with our sister properties Reunion Resort in Orlando, Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tampa and the Salamander Resort & Spa in Virginia. Please be sure to keep one of these booklets on hand to stay informed. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Members of the Advisory Board of Governors for their hard work and diligence throughout the year. They have provided valuable feedback, based on your input, about member policies and programs which have either been implemented or adjusted to improve the Club experience for all members. Finally, I am very pleased to announce that Hammock Beach was just ranked by Travel + Leisure readers as one of America’s Best Family Hotels – coming in at #5 out of 25 hotels that were ranked. Also, Reunion Resort was ranked at #17. Please view link to full slideshow: travelandleisure.com/articles/americas-best-family-hotels I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to meeting and greeting you all around the Club.
Cheers, With the end of the many great member activities last month, from the Gallo Wine Tasting to all the Homecoming Weekend special events to Thanksgiving, we now gear up for the December events and the new year.
TIM DIGBY General Manager

Advisory Board of G o v e r n o r s U p d a t e, b y C har l e s Ke r r,Pre si d e n t
In my first ABOG update for the January Newsletter, I predicted that 2014 would be a challenging year for the Membership and the Club. Admittedly, with Salamander’s proposal to tear down the Lodge and replace it with two new structures containing 198 rooms and additional member space, my prediction was like low hanging fruit. Although the Lodge project has been an important part of the ABOG’s time this year, the Board has also been working on several other Club issues near and dear to Membership. Each of the Committees has put a lot of time and effort into their respective sections of the Club and achieved some good results. The Sports and Leisure Committee created a sub-committee dedicated specifically to helping improve the Fitness Center and fitness classes. Their efforts started with a comprehensive survey sent out to the entire membership to get a better understanding of how members feel about the facilities and existing programs. From the results of the survey, the subcommittee produced a list of recommendations that have been submitted to Management for their review. We should start to see some of those recommendations put into action starting in 2015. The S&L Committee helped develop a new annual event called the Golf/ Tennis Challenge. The event pitted golfers against tennis players in a format that had them play each other in both sports. UNFORTUNATELY, this year’s event had the Golf Team come out on top. Can you tell that I’m a tennis player and a little biased?

If you thought the member events in 2014 were good, you’re going to love 2015. The Social Committee has been working on a great entertainment lineup for our events next year. Included in the 2015 schedule, we will be having trivia in Loggerhead’s on a regular basis. Be sure to watch for Marianne’s eblasts for more information on this new activity. The Committee also plans your Homecoming Weekend events each year. This year, along with a Beatles tribute band, there will be an Art Show & Sale which will include Club member artists and local artists. If you have had an occasion to buy groceries this year, you’re aware of how much the cost of food has increased since January. Like your family, the Club has had to also deal with these increases. The Club came to our Food &Beverage Committee and explained the pressure the increases have placed on the food outlets. The Committee was asked to help them develop a new price schedule that would be acceptable to the Membership. Club Management and Jeffrey recognize what an important member perk the Member Menus are. The result is a compromise which would be a modest increase in the dinner Member Menus at the Atlantic Grill and Delfinos. In addition, the lunch menu at the Sand Trap Bar would also see a slight increase. The ABOG will discuss the proposed increase at our December meeting and make an announcement shortly afterward as to what has been decided.
run the annual election to fill available seats on the ABOG. This year, we are happy to say, there were nine candidates running for six open positions. As a Club, we’re fortunate to have these talented members interested in volunteering their time on behalf of the Membership. On a personal note, after serving two terms on the ABOG, I’ll be stepping down as a full Board member. Though, per the ABOG Bylaws, I will continue for one year in an advisory position called Immediate Past President. Four years ago, when I volunteered to run for the ABOG, I had no idea what to expect and wasn’t sure where I would fit in. Being on the ABOG has afforded me a unique opportunity to work with some really good, dedicated people on both the Board and in Club Management. Participating on the Board has reinforced my belief that what we have at Hammock Beach is truly special. So, to all of those Members who voted for me four years ago, I can’t say thank you enough.
The Member Relations Committee has two primary responsibilities. First, the Committee produces and evaluates the Annual Member Survey. I’ve communicated several times the importance the survey has to the effectiveness of the ABOG. The Survey provides the Board with direct input from the Membership as to their experience with the Club’s performance and condition. The information from the survey helps the Board focus the Board’s efforts toward enhancing the overall member experience. The other responsibility of the Committee is to
Lastly, the Advisory Board of Governors and I would like to wish all of you and your families a safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Add Some Power and Help Reduce your Slice with the Pause & Hit Drill by Wes Altice, Assistant Golf Professional This drill will help with players who tend to come over the top during the downswing due to overuse of the upper body. As a result, the club will be thrown on the outside of the intended swing plane with the club head approaching the ball from outside to in. This creates a pull if the clubface is square to the swing plane or a slice if the club face is open to the swing plane. Â Click this link to view: youtu.be/syyyZy4V6OU 9
TENNIS TIP
To Hit Better Volleys, Remember to Lead with the Bottom Edge of the Racquet by Harry Gilbert, Director of Tennis Many players tend to volley with their forehand groundstroke grip which keeps the racquet face too closed. The closed racquet face will send volleys down rather than out into the court, either causing balls into the net or too short in your opponent’s court. In the first photo, I have my forehand grip and you can see the racquet face is closed. In the second, I have switched to a more continental grip (by moving my index knuckle a quarter turn to the top of the handle) and now I am leading with the bottom edge. This will send the ball deeper in the court and result in a better volley. This grip change might feel as though you are not as stable at first, so get some practice in on leading with the bottom edge.

Silverado Portfolio Tasting
Thursday, January 8, 2015 6pm-9pm • Surf Room Hosted by Pamela Ford of Silverado Winery On January 8, 2015 we will present a portfolio tasting of the wines of Silverado. Silverado’s winemaking is rooted in the vineyards. They are dedicated to expressing the unique and delicious quality and character of grapes grown on each of their six vineyards in the Napa Valley. Since its founding in 1981, the winery had grown to nearly 400 acres, which is farmed organically and sustainably. From them, Silverado produces Estate and Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. While proud of the accolades the estate wines have garnered, their reputation with wine lovers and collectors rests on the shoulders of their Limited Cabernet, made only in the best vintages, and their SOLO Cabernet; the highest expression of our Stags Leap District home. In an interactive, classroom style setting Pamela Ford will take us through each of these expressive wines that will be complimented by Chef Carlos small plates, perfectly paired with each wine flight (total of 4 flights). The following wines will be presented… Miller Ranch Sauvignon Blanc Carneros Chardonnay Rosato di Sangiovese Soda Creek Sangiovese Mt. George Merlot Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon SOLO Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon $50 per person plus service charge and tax Space is limited to the first 36 members to RSVP by January 5 at hbmembership@hammockbeach.com or 888.252.6294.

A Fond Farewell to Marie McManus,
Membership Coordinator As most of you are aware by now, Marie McManus in the Membership Office will be retiring at the end of this year; her last day at the Club is December 10. Marie joined the Hammock Beach team in March 2003, the initial opening of the Club and played a crucial role in the launch of the Hammock Beach membership program the following year. Since then, Marie has been one of the warm, friendly faces in the Membership Office, greeting and assisting many Club Members over the past 11 years. Her dedication, hard work and creative ideas have helped shape the membership program, and along with her calm and poised demeanor she has been an integral part of the Club and Membership team. Marie will be missed very much by staff and Club Members alike and we wish her continued happiness and good health as she and husband Roger retires to their new home in North Carolina, near her children and grandchildren. Please join me in wishing Marie a fond farewell.
