Wide Open Tournament

What better way to recuperate on New Year’s Day than by playing in the annual Wide Open Challenge! Each year our golf staff takes pride in setting up the golf course with extreme conditions, challenging the men to play from the black tees while the ladies play from the whites. There were many brave souls that attempted the round; however, the weather got the better of a few people. Leading in the men’s division was Jack Ramsey, shooting a 83 gross, while Kyle Campbell took low net with a 76. It was a close race between finishers Sue Greenstein and Teresa Yip, with only one shot separating the two. Congratulations to all those that turned up and teed off the New Year with us!

Reunion Shootout and Reunion Open (RMS Event)

January held two events for points towards the Reunion Members Series. In the Reunion Shootout, Nigel Jenkins fired a 79 gross, while Terence Harvey took best net with a score of 69.

In the ladies division, Mary Lynn Sertich (gross 78) and Leslie McLatchie (net 67) were the big point winners, each adding big points to their previous RMS point totals. In the Reunion Open, it was David Fitzgibbons with low gross 72 and Chris Clegg, who had a phenomenal round and took low net with a 66, who emerged victorious. In the ladies division, Mary Paton took low gross with an 84 and Phyllis Sawyer fired a net 62! The Reunion Members Series is still ongoing through the end of March so make sure you rack up those points by taking part in the last few events before the Series Championships!

Senior Club Championship

We had a wonderful turnout for our first major event of the year, the 2014 Senior Club Championship. There were 2 flights for the ladies and 3 flights for the men but the ultimate Senior Club Champions were Mary Lynn Sertich with a 2 day total 167 and Jim Staskiel with 145.

The role of the Committee is to ensure the 30 through 39 9 integrity and accuracy of any handicap used by anyone playing golf at Reunion Resort. It is also the responsibility of the Committee to 7. Unacceptable scores – scores made under the following conditions are unacceptable for handicap ensure that all golfers who play in competipurposes and should not be recorded in the GHIN tive events comply with the requirements of System. the USGA Handicap System. a. When fewer than 7 holes are played. Two basic premises underlie the USGA Handicap System, namely that each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round and that every player will post every acceptable round for peer review. The purpose of the USGA Handicap System is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling players of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis. By accomplishing these objectives, our competitive events will be fairer and more enjoyable for all who play.

RE UN IO N R E SORT GOLF HANDICAP POLICY 1. The USGA Handicap System will be used to govern player’s handicaps at Reunion Resort. The manual covering the USGA Handicap System is available online at www.usga.org. 2 T he Player – each full golf member must have a USGA GHIN Number. A player can get a GHIN Number from the Pro Shop. Every full golf member shall be responsible for posting all acceptable scores as defined by the USGA Handicap System. 3. Scores to post – If a player plays 7 to 12 holes a “Nine Hole Score” must be posted. 13 or more holes played requires that an “Eighteen Hole Score” to be posted. A player who does not complete a hole must record the “most likely score” as defined by the USGA Handicap System. 4. Deadline for posting scores – All scores must be posted within 24 hours of the round’s conclusion.

gath erings | 8

5. Penalty score – The Handicap Committee can post a penalty score if a player fails to post a score. 6. Equitable Stroke Control – sets a maximum number of strokes that a player can post on any hole based upon the player’s current Course Handicap. The table below shows the maximum number of strokes a player can record for their current Course Handicap.

b. When, as a condition of the competition, the maximum number of clubs that can be used is less than 14 clubs. C. When a player uses non-conforming clubs or non- conforming golf balls.

8. Tournament Scores – The Pro Shop will determine which competitions are to be deemed Tournaments under the USGA rules of golf. For these events Tournament scores are posted into the system by the Pro Shop and use the suffix “T”. 9. Reduction of USGA Handicap for Exceptional Tournament Scores. Reunion Resort policy will follow the guidelines set out in sections 8.4e and 10.3 of the USGA Handicap System manual. These guidelines permit for reduction of handicap as per the Handicap Reduction Table in section 10.3, or for a further reduction under section 10.3e, based on performance better than the 10.3 table reduction. This revised handicap will be designated with an R in the GHIN system, and will apply to all competitions at Reunion, until further adjusted or overridden by the Committee, as per section 10.3. 10. Non-USGA Handicaps – As noted above all full golf members should have a USGA GHIN number and work towards obtaining a USGA handicap index. However, during the process of obtaining a USGA handicap a player may play off their non.USGA handicap in competitions and tournaments. This handicap must be verified with a current handicap certificate from their home club. This non-USGA handicap will be adjusted to an equivalent USGA index by using the Watson course slope rating for the blue tees for men and red tees for ladies. For example if a male player has a UK verifiable handicap of 12 then this will give an equivalent USGA index of 10-7 (12*113/127). This index will then be used for calculating a course handicap on Palmer and Nicklaus as well as the Watson course. This policy will also apply to guests of members who play during the Member/Guest events, and do not have a USGA handicap.

11. Changes in Members non-USGA Handicaps – a Member who does have a USGA handicap or has not posted a GHIN score for over 3 months, and who also has a non-USGA handicap that has altered by more than 2 strokes, should notify the Handicap Committee immediately on their return to Reunion. The Handicap Committee can request a member to verify his/her current non-USGA handicap. If the non-USGA handicap has changed by more than 2 strokes then the Handicap Committee reserve the right to adjust the USGA handicap of that member by the excess over 2 strokes. 12. Player manipulates their score – The USGA Handicap System requires the Handicap Committee to adjust or withdraw a Handicap Index for a player that manipulates scores. Examples of manipulating scores include: a. Posting erroneous information to a scoring record. b. Stopping play after 6 holes to avoid posting a score. c. Repeatedly playing more than one ball to avoid posting a score. d. Not adjusting hole scores under the ESC system. e. Deliberately reporting more or less strokes than actually scored. f. Deliberately taking extra strokes to inflate a score.

HANDICAP COMMITTEE – GOVERNANCE AND GUIDELINES The Reunion Handicap Committee should be independent of Reunion Management and the Chair of the Reunion Golf Committee. The Committee will operate strictly in accordance with USGA guidelines. The Committee will deal only with handicaps and all other golf related matters are to be handled by the Golf Committee, Greens Committee and/or the Pro-Staff. The members of the Committee would normally have a term of office of 2 years although reappointment is permitted for one further term. There should be a minimum of 3 members on the Committee. Once every 2 years full golf members of Reunion will be invited to become members on the Handicap Committee and if needed an election could be held if there are significant number of members apply. Only full golf members can take part on the Committee and any potential applicant should have a working knowledge of the USGA Handicap system.

RE U N I O N RE SORT HAN DI CAP COM M ITTEE – J ANUARY 2014

gath erings | 9

The ideal composition of the Committee should reflect the gender balance of the membership, include a member with knowledge of non-USGA handicaps as well as at least one permanent resident in Reunion.

Reunion Handicap Committee Newsletter – Jan 2014 Introduction This brief newsletter invites full golf members to join the Reunion Handicap Committee, updates members on our local handicap policy and gives the result of the 2013 Most Improved Player award.

New Committee members required. The Handicap Committee is independent of Reunion Golf management and was formed to assess and regulate Reunion Golf member’s handicaps. The current term of office for the present Committee ends at the end of March 2014 and they invite any Reunion golf member who wishes to be part of the ongoing Committee to express an interest to a current Committee member by 28 February 2014.

Reunion Handicap Policy. revised Some minor changes to this policy have recently been made and a revised copy is circulated with this newsletter. Posting Scores Its pleasing to note that 16 members (2012. 9 mem-

bers) posted more than 100 scores during 2013 and we congratulate these members and all those other members who continue to post scores every time they have played a valid round. The total number of scores posted by members (who were present during 2012 and 2013) increased by nearly 15%. This is encouraging progress.

gath erings | 10

However, it is not all good news as some members still only post scores infrequently (i.e. less than 40% of the rounds played). This is totally unacceptable and is not in accordance with member’s responsibilities under the USGA Handicap System.

The Handicap Committee can and will take action if members continue to fail to post scores when they play an eligible round of golf. Our Newsletter in May 2013 set out the actions the Handicap Committee can take in these circumstances.

What scores should be posted. If a player plays 7 to 12 holes a “Nine Hole Score” must be posted. If 13 or more holes are played then an “Eighteen Hole Score” to be posted. A player who does not complete a hole must record the “most likely score” as defined by the USGA Handicap System. i.e. if a player has a handicap of 18 the most likely score is a bogey on each hole not played.

Most Improved Player Award The Committee launched an Award to recognise the players whose handicap improved the most in the calendar year 2013. We hoped this award would encourage members to post scores and reduce their handicaps. In determining who won we used the method recommended by the USGA to calculate an improvement factor as well as requiring men to have posted at least 35 scores in the year (25 scores for ladies) including at least one Tournament score.

Congratulations to the 2013 winners: Men: Chris Clegg Ladies: Trudy Hobbs.

Enjoy your golf in Reunion.

PUTTING TIP: FOLLOW THROUGH! If you find yourself truncating your putting stroke, try putting left hand low with a light, ten finger split grip. Keep your left arm straight, as if it is an extension of the putter, and allow your stroke to flow!

Wednesday Putting Challenge Members are invited to come down to the Putting PAD on Wednesdays at 4.30pm to putt with fellow members. Prizes and complimentary refreshments will be on hand every week.

Congratulations to Canadian Christina Foster who beat the boys in the Inaugural Putting Club 9 Hole Strokeplay competition. After tying with Howard Glover after 9 holes, Christina showed her ability to compete under pressure by winning in the 3 hole playoff. The following week, Christina paired with her brother John to go on to win our doubles event.

READ I NG GREENS : U PHIL L AND DO W NHIL L BR EAKING PU T T S

Frank,

Thank you for the weekly putting tips they are really starting to help my putting. I think that reading the green is sometimes difficult enough without the added problem of a downhill or uphill break. Please help me understand this phenomenon. Also I have a friend who I play with frequently who says that I should watch the ball as it passes the hole (that is if I miss it) and putt back along this same line. I don’t think he is right. Can you help me? —Brian

gath erings | 12

Brian, I am glad you are enjoying the weekly putting tips and we are surprised at how many more questions we are getting about putting. Just maybe, golfers are starting to recognize the importance

of this part of the game. In the neighborhood of 45 % of our score, and about 40% of the time we spend on the course is on the green. Yet we don’t really practice, nor do we know how to practice our putting.

frankly G O L F

RE AD I NG GREENS : U PH ILL AND DO W NHIL L BR EAKING PU T T S

With regard to your question about breaking uphill putts vs. breaking downhill putts and returning those you missed; first let me advise you that the answer is a lot more complex than it would seem. I think we all recognize that fast greens break more than slow greens for the same slope. And a downhill breaking putt is similar to a fast green whereas an uphill breaking putt is similar to a slow green, therefore downhill breaking putts will break more than uphill breaking putts. The reason for this is that a slow green (or uphill putt) requires that the ball must be hit harder, thus it starts off faster and slows down faster than a putt of the same distance on a fast green (or downhill putt), which must be hit more softly and it slows down more slowly, and thus takes more time to reach the hole. The longer a putt takes to reach the hole the more time gravity – pulling it downhill — will have to act.

Brian, you are right in not putting on the same path back to the hole as the ball took on its way past the hole because short putts do not break as much as long putts, especially if you hit them at the correct speed. The correct speed for a short (two foot) putt should be hit hard enough to hit the back wall (not the top lip) of the cup and it should be traveling faster than the ball was when it passed the hole on the missed putt. Therefore it will not break as much. A babied short putt—soft enough to only die in the hole – on a side hill lie will turn as much as 50 degrees as it dies. This is not what you want to do as you will inevitably miss this putt. Hit it with confidence and fast enough to hit the back wall of the cup and don’t aim outside the hole on short putts.

Brian, if you understand how and why putts break you will be a lot better off than watching the last foot or six inches to give you an indication of what will happen on the next putt.

—Frank

gath erings | 13

The ball will take on a path similar to a parabolic curve, breaking more at the end than at the beginning. This is due to gravitational forces and the phenomenon known as precession. The slower the ball travels the more it will break. Therefore at the end of the journey the ball will break consider-

ably more than at the beginning. Because a downhill putt is travelling slower it will break 3 or 4 times more than an uphill putt.

Whether you play singles or doubles, the drop shot will be a very useful. The drop shot is one of the most under.used weapons there is. You can use it to set your opponent up for the lob or to even finish off a point with some touch; either way we have to follow these few tips in order to hit this shot consistently. The first and most important thing to remember is that you just can’t hit a good drop shot from

anywhere in the court. You must be at least standing in the middle of “no.man’s.land.” Now the execution: make sure you are approaching this shot with a volley grip (Continental), not your ground.stroke grip. Move toward the ball with your racket head above your hand and with no backswing. Once you reach your hitting location, push your hand forward with a firm wrist and you will see the ball simply float over. One common mistake that club players will make is to try and get the drop shot to travel over the net as low as possible. Two reasons why this is not correct . number one, your chances of missing in the net just greatly increased; number two, is that if the ball does go over, it will be going deeper in the court making it much easier for your opponent to run down. The perfect height is 1.2’ over the net, making the second bounce much closer to the net.

If you keep these few tips in your pocket, you will have a new weapon to break your opponent down.

One last tip is to stay low; too many people stiffen up when trying to hit the drop shot. You need to keep your knees bent and push the ball with a slightly open racket face.
