General M a n a g e r ’s

C O RN E R DEAR MEMBERS: The “Clean It and Fix It” program is winding up its first month and we have made some good progress. The program was kicked off by cleaning, painting, and adding new fixtures to both sets of comfort stations on the Ocean Course! This was met with some great reviews from our members and those that participated in the recent Ladies Invitational!

Next up was the Fantasy Pool Complex where we closed for two days. Included here was power washing the deck surfaces, cleaning and wiping all of our loungers and tables and chairs. New ceiling fans were installed around the Ocean Bar as well. In the bathrooms, deep cleaning was completed, fresh paint applied, and fixtures changed out. New men’s and ladies room bathroom partitions have just arrived, and will be installed this week! Coping around the Lazy River was painted, and this process will be continued on the overnight for the balance of the pool areas. Additional sand for the Sandy Beach Pool has also

This continues, with each team member adding a ball and continues until the team balancing the most balls, without dropping any, wins. When a ball drops, the number of balls on the racquet (including the ball dropped) at that time is the team score.

2014 Ladies Invitational by Brad Hauer, Director of Golf

Here are a few of the great comments we received from our members: A BIG THANK YOU for all you do to make this event just the best 3 days anyone could imagine for a Member/Guest!!!!

This year’s Ladies Invitational was truly the best ever. We received more thank yous on this particular event than any other event that we have organized to date. This year’s invitational committee of Kathy Hodges, Mary Ann Maurer, Rhonda Miller and Debbi Demusey helped to make significant successful changes. The event started with the shopping

We were so fortunate to have perfect weather which is always a bonus when a golf tournament is planned and we just were so lucky this year!!!! Both courses were in great shape thanks to the grounds crew. Everything was thought out so well from the beginning at the shopping spree which was decorated so beautifully with such a great variety of merchandise, fitting room, beautiful tote bag, to the fabulous food, both on and off the boat to the beautiful flower arrangements at the luncheon and the great entertainment by the trick shot golfer, Brad Denton.

My guests still can’t believe all that was included in this Member/Guest....this is the best and because of you and all your hard work it is such a success!!!

round, the entire field was entertained by trick shot artist, Brad Denton. Brad put on a fantastic show and helped get

the evening off to a very festive start. After the show, we conducted our skills challenge using our 9 hole putting course at the resort and a closest to the pin on hole #18. Our cruise on the Sundancer Thursday night really topped off the week. It was a beautiful evening to cruise the intracoastal and the food was outstanding. Congratulations to this year’s champions, Jane Davidson and her guest Marcia Hayton!!

I want to thank all involved in the women’s invitational. It was a FANTASTIC experience. I know everyone went out of their way. My sister and I looooved it. The golf crew was wonderful, the food was wonderful....the whole experience was fantastic. I was proud to be a member of this golf club. I can’t give any suggestions to make it any better.

Thank you all again for all the time and effort everyone put in to this to make it so enjoyable. Penny Grzyb

Congratulations to ALL Hammock Beach employees who had a hand in making this THE BEST Invitational we have ever had. From my viewpoint, I felt everything went smoothly...it’s a fine tuned event! Starting with the shopping spree that Susan Shaw organized, which blew everyone away (the...best.. anywhere), to the kickoff reception & skills challenge with the addition of trick shot entertainment---what a great start. Nice menu for the food that night, too. Thursday’s round at the Ocean was a wonderful day and the outside staff was very helpful to all. Breakfast at the Hammock House was also nice with a change in menu from previous years. Dinner on the Sundancer...no one else has anything like this and it was a great evening; attentive staff, wonderful dinner and perfect weather for a cruise on the intracoastal. Friday at Conservatory...another great day of weather and organized and helpful outside staff under Craig’s direction. The breakfast was also a nice change in menu and I think everyone enjoyed the choices. The dining room with tablecloths and lovely centerpieces arranged by a couple of the members was the nicest we’ve had....such a pleasant change from last year when there were no tablecloths or centerpieces or silverware on the table. Good menu too. A lot of time and work on Jason Farrell’s part to make this such a success...big thanks! Wes and Scott...thanks to them for their help as well. We always appreciate the part the Membership staff plays in the organizing. A big thanks to Steve Sorrell and staff--both courses were beautiful. Of course, Brad always likes to take credit for the weather...good job this year! It is such a pleasure to be able to have a guest experience such a first class Invitational. Thanks to everyone involved...I appreciate your effort in making this the BEST INVITATIONAL around. Happy to be a member of Hammock Beach,

On April 23-25th, I enjoyed playing in the Invitational here at Hammock Beach. For women golfers at this club, this is the absolute best tournament of the year. Brad Hauer and his crew, including Jason, Wes, Madeline, and Scott have done an outstanding job. Each year this tournament gets better and better. Our first day started with a shopping spree that every woman loves. Susan Shaw, as always, does a wonderful job and this year she outdid herself. We were moved into a larger room, complete with changing area, and decorated to a tee. Numerous vendors were there, and our choice of clothing, shoes, clubs, etc. was excellent. After the practice rounds, we were treated to wonderful food outside on the Event Lawn and a golf demonstration by Brad Denton that was “awesome.” I don’t think anything could of made this day better. Our two days of competition, with the help of our cart attendants, ran smoothly. A special thank you to Karen, Frank, Craig, and Dean, for going above and beyond to make our event perfect. From wonderful weather, to improvements in our pace of play, the golf itself could not of been better.

Our evening on the Sundancer, for many of our guests and members, is the highlight of the event. Again, Jeffrey Sacchet, Chef Carlos, and their staff made this evening memorable. The food was out of this world, and can’t wait to do this again next year. Our final day of competition at Conservatory went flawlessly. The luncheon was wonderful, the awards awesome, and again many thanks to Marianne Murphy and her staff for the pictures, seating charts, and everything else they did to make this event top notch. After speaking with many of our out of state guests, they all said this is “hands down” the best Ladies Invitational they have ever attended. Way to go Hammock Beach!!!

Kathy Hodges

Mary Ann Maurer 13

I am writing this to make sure you are aware of what an amazing event we had last week. The Invitational has always been “the” event for the women, and this year proved it just keeps getting better. First, kudos to Brad and Marianne for their continued pursuit of perfection! Also, the training of their lieutenants really shines in this event. Jason always shows his gift for tournament prep, as well as Scott and Wes, as they make our guests feel special. The cart staff had people in awe at how happy and upbeat everyone seemed. Marianne Heinz has been involved for weeks helping us get the membership signed up and ready, as well as all the little details that matter.

Susan Shaw out did herself this year on

the presentation for the shopping spree and is always there to make sure each guest feels they had special attention. Jeffrey and the food and beverage crew impressed everyone. Finally, for the members, it was so refreshing to be with a group of members that all wanted to be there. I would tell you that the model for this event could be used anywhere in the country. (In fact, I would challenge that it would be hard to find a stronger women’s invitational anywhere!)

I hope you recognize what a strong team you have in your operation. Rhonda Miller

ATTACK or APPROACH?!? By Gene Paul Lascano, Head Tennis Professional Getting a short ball during a doubles match is always an opportunity to take charge of the point. One of the hardest decisions to make is whether you should elect to try to win the point out right, or use the short ball to transition to the net. The easiest way to decide whether you should “Attack or Approach a short ball should be based on the height of the bounce of the incoming ball. If the short ball you are receiving is above net level, you should attack the ball (picture 1). This is particularly useful in doubles when choosing to hit down the line towards the opposing net player. It is very critical that you strike the ball in a relatively aggressive manner so that the opposing net player will not have much time to react for your shot. Your main focus should be to try to draw an error from your opponent---not hit a clean passing shot. If the bounce of the short ball is below the level of the net (picture 2), it is best to use the opportunity to hit an approach shot and structure the rest of your point at the net using volleys and overheads. On lower balls, your ability to strike the ball aggressively becomes difficult due to the fact that you have to lift the ball up instead of being able to flatten it out. In most instances, it is best to hit lowbouncing short balls crosscourt over the center of net since that is where the net is lowest. You want to try to hit your approach as effective as possible in the hopes of receiving a weaker ball that you can then ultimately finish.

Commencement By Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness

With June come lots of graduations. Many of you will have children or grandchildren graduating from High School or College. My son Antonio is graduating from the IB program at Flagler Palm Coast High School. I feel that the word commencement does a better job of summing up this time of year. The definition for commencement is “a beginning or start. Graduation somehow seem too final. The same holds true in our pursuit of health. While we all set goals and hope to graduate what we are striving for is a new beginning a fresh start and a new goal. When we do that we stay motivated, energized and on task. I know how excited Antonio is to be starting a new adventure at New College of Florida. I am sure we can all remember what it felt like to plan to be on our own for the first time; that nervous but thrilling feeling deep in our gut. So check yourself we are nearly at the halfway point of the year. How are you doing towards your goals? Have you graduated? Or are you commencing? I guess it comes down to how you want to look at it. Congratulations to all the graduates in your lives! I know how proud I am of mine and excited for his commencement. 17

Live Aroma Seminar and Tasting Featuring the Wines of EJ Gallo Tuesday, July 15, 2014 Time: 6pm-8:30pm Location: Ocean View room Max Attendance: 35 Members Only E. & J. Gallo Winery is the world’s largest family-owned winery and the largest exporter of California wine. Whether it’s an award-winning Pinot Noir crafted in California’s North Coast or a memorable Malbec from Argentina, the goal at the Gallo Winery is to always provide customers with worldclass products from optimal growing regions all over the world. On July 15 Gallo will host a “live aroma” seminar beginning with an elaborate reception food menu and sparkling wine. The evening proceeds thereafter with an interactive sensory experience where members will use their senses to taste and evaluate 8 different wines. We will discuss the senses we use to evaluate wine and how we use them to determine where wine flavors, sensations and aromas come from. The tasting room will be set in small groups of 6 chairs each per table. Each place setting will have 8 wines presented. We will also present an Aroma Table with a selection of about 20 “live aromas.” These aromas will be “blind,” hidden from the participants. Each team member – a team is one table – will smell each of the aromas and then go back to their score sheets to try and determine which aromas they detected in each of the 8 wines presented. The table or team with the highest number of correct matching aromas will be declared the Gallo Aroma Champions. $45 Member (plus service charge & tax) RSVP to 888.252.6294 or hbmembership@hammockbeach.com by 5pm Wednesday, July 9. Cancellations must be received by 5pm Wednesday, July 9 to avoid full charge.

DEVIOUS ANGELS

TRAVIS MEADOWS

Having just finished recording their first album produced by RJ Stillwell and Chad Jeffers, The Devious Angels now are able to convey what happens when you put a performer’s performer, Steevie, and a songwriter’s songwriter, Decious, together to make music that is beautiful, rough, poignant and exciting all at once.

Travis’ song “I’m A Riser” was recently recorded by country superstar Dierks Bentley. He received a 2001 ASCAP Christian Music Award, had eight Top 20 singles in the Contemporary Christian genre and landed a staff writer deal with Scott Gunter at Universal Music Publishing Group in 2005.
