CORNER

It has been a month since I arrived here at Hammock Beach as your new General Manager, and I must say that it has been a whirlwind since I have arrived. So much to learn, so much to see, and so many people to meet; it has been a little overwhelming! However what I have discovered is that Hammock Beach is a place of beauty. The natural setting, the sunrise off the ocean, the sunset into the Hammock, and the wildlife all make this a unique and special place. The other element that makes this such a wonderful place are the people here! I have never been made to feel more welcome at any place I have ever gone to before. Club Associates and Members have gone out of their way to ensure that I have been greeted with well wishes and smiles! This was never more evident than at the recent Member/Manager Reception! Also everyone has made it their job to point me in the right direction after I make a wrong turn; which is easy to do around here in the beginning! My first month has been an amazing experience and I look forward to many more months to come! Thank you to everyone! Cheers,

Tim Digby

have been submitted. Please take the time to let us know your thoughts on whether these new activities would of interest to you. There are several items related to golf that are notable. •A reminder to homeowners that have property contiguous to the golf course. It is your responsibility to apply for, and receive in writing, approval from both the Club and your appropriate POA prior to removing any plant material between the homeowner’s property line and the golf course.

b y Char l es Ker r, Pr e s i d e n t I want to start by welcoming Tim Digby to The Club at Hammock Beach. Coming from Omni Amelia Island Plantation, Tim has a lot of prior experience with the Resort/ Membership model that we have here. Recently, Tim had a chance to sit in on his first ABOG meeting. The Board was impressed that he had already taken the time to bring himself up to speed on the many issues currently affecting the members. We believe that Tim will be a genuine asset to the Membership and the Resort. The Board looks forward to working with him to elevate the Club experience to the highest level. If you happen to see Tim around the Club, I recommend that you take a few minutes to introduce yourself and get to know him.

• Hopefully, you golfers have noticed the new anti-slip mats that have been applied to the bridges on #8 Conservatory and #15 Ocean. We are evaluating whether additional cover needs to be added the cart parking area on the bridge of #15 Ocean. •T he new golf carts have been approved by the powers that be. The last hurdle involves the GPS system at The Conservatory. Once this last issue has been resolved, carts should arrive in four to six weeks. It will then take approximately one week to map the courses for the new GPS system. The new GPS system is state of the art and uses a touch screen to determine and display the yardage. • Management has agreed with the ABOG that, going forward, golf bag storage, transfer excluded, will be included in full golf dues. You can expect some exciting new events this year that are being planned through the Food & Beverage and Social Committees. The Napa vs Sonoma wine dinner on March 19th was extremely popular. It was so popular that many members were unable to get in. To accommodate the members who were unable to get into this event, the Committees are working with Jeffrey Sacchet to schedule several more of these during the year. Another event under consideration for 2014 is The Cooking School at Hammock Beach. As the name implies, this event will provide members and guests an opportunity to upgrade their cooking skills. Chef Carlos and his staff will work one on one with a maximum number of eight people in the preparation of a gourmet meal. At the end of the 3 ½ hour class, the student prepared meal would then be served, paired with the appropriate wine. The idea is to offer these events to Club members, who put their own class groups together, and to corporate groups visiting the resort.

By the time you read this, the 2014 Member Survey will have been sent out to the Membership. You have probably gotten tired of hearing the Board talk about how important the survey is in assisting The Club in learning about your individual experiences with the quality of service and Club amenities. After the survey period, the ABOG will produce a summary of the responses and provide an update to the Membership by posting them on the website. I will also provide a summary for members in an upcoming Newsletter. The Board is always on the lookout for suggestions from members for new activities. The Member Relations Committee will be sending the members a series of mini-surveys to gauge the interest in some of the recent ideas that

An announcement will be made and reservations will be taken in the near future.

We have an attendance problem at our events.... it’s too good. We are no longer the small group of full time residents who, for years, were able to just show up at a social or Member-Manager and expect available seating and plenty of great food. The time has finally come when it is absolutely necessary to for us to RSVP to all member events. The ABOG and the Club management have been trying to find a solution to this problem for several months. A solution that is effective and still respectful of the membership. Going forward, members who attend the socials or Member-Manager receptions without an RSVP will be

sent a reminder. Members who regularly fail to RSVP or “no show” will be contacted directly and asked to follow the guidelines. Ultimately, it may come down to having to institute some kind of penalty. Sending your RSVP is not only a courtesy, it helps ensure that the kitchen and Membership office are able to plan appropriately. If you have any questions regarding activities at the Club, please feel free to contact me at chaskerr@bellsouth.net or Marianne Murphy at mmurphy@hammockbeach.com.

Book donations are always welcomed and may be dropped in the basket for shelving also. Poker and Card rooms must be reserved - To reserve either of these spaces please contact the Membership Office at 888.252.6294. A member name and Club account number will be required for the reservation. As is the policy throughout the Club outside food may not be brought in. There is no refrigerator or coffee service. Golf Tip: Maintain Your Posture For Added Power By Brad Hauer, Director of Golf If you are losing distance or hooking the golf ball more than you would like, you may need to pay attention at maintaining a better posture throughout your swing. Generally, loss of distance or power can come from a result of standing up and losing your posture during the swing. When working with our students, I like to use video and draw a vertical line behind the student that touches the seat of their pants. The goal in the swing is to have the seat of your pants always touching the line throughout the backswing and down through the impact area. I have enclosed several pictures showing the correct positions in the set up, top of the backswing, and down through the impact position. I have also enclosed a photo of what a typical incorrect impact position would look like as well. So what do you want to feel to help maintain your posture and add more power? One of my favorite swing thoughts is to have the sensation that you are barely sitting on a bar stool while you make your backswing. As you do this you will feel the right hip pocket point out and away from the golf ball. The right thigh will sink slightly producing more coil and power. This will help you achieve a better impact position as shown in the correct impact picture. By doing so, you will be maximizing the power you can generate in the swing. Give this a try on the range and I guarantee you’ll like the results.

Tennis Tip: For Better Serving Remember The Tennis Trophy! By Harry Gilbert, Director of Tennis

The figure on a tennis trophy shows us the appropriate look as we release the ball before a serve. In the photo on the left, I haven’t lifted high enough with my left arm and my shoulders are in line. This only allows me to hit the back of the ball and with not enough racquet head speed. In the picture on the right, my left arm is extended and I am releasing the ball at the highest point with my right (hitting) arm well below my tossing arm. This creates much more racquet head speed and you can also spin the ball much easier. So for a better release point and therefore a better serve, remember the tennis trophy. AND WITH AN IMPROVED SERVE YOU’LL BE GETTING A LOT MORE OF THOSE TROPHIES!!

Hydration By Thor Holm, Director of Spa, Recreation & Fitness With the hotter months around the corner the topic of proper hydration comes to mind. Things that I once thought were based in science have lately come up as a little less scientific and a lot more myth. I am sure you have all heard to avoid coffee because it is a diuretic. The fact is that the diuretic effect of coffee is so much less than the fluid ingested that avoiding coffee for anything other than water might come with its own complications. Once was the day that I thought that we must drink 8 eight ounce glasses of water each day. While not adverse that is not based on science. The water a person requires might increase or decrease based on the foods you eat. If your diet consisted of nuts and grains your need would be much higher than someone who had access to fruits like watermelon, oranges or foods like yogurt or salad for example. Activity and environment will certainly play a role in how much water or fluids you should ingest. When you are exercising or working outdoors it is a good idea to hydrate before you feel thirsty. An indication that you are properly hydrated would be the need to urinate every two to four hours and that the urine is light in color. If you go all day without having to urinate and the color is dark you can bet you need more water. “Hydration is important because the body is comprised mostly of water, and the proper balance between water and electrolytes in our bodies really determines how most of our systems function, including nerves and muscles, says Larry Kenney, PhD, a professor of physiology and kinesiology at Penn State Staying properly hydrated is all about intention. Each day assess your need against your intake and have a plan to stay ahead of the curve.
