FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
It is good to see our seasonal folks beginning to return. We are in a very busy time at SCG and there are many projects moving forward simultaneously. Our new food and beverage partners have been in place for a few weeks and we appreciate all the support shown by the community for the Grand CafĂŠ. The expanded menu and hours are being augmented with casual live music several days per week. All of this is in effort to provide more casual entertainment for you during this time that large events are still prohibited by the State.
W. David Twiggs General Manager
Our plans for the Village Center upgrades are moving along. The Committee has analyzed a lot of feedback from the membership on what you would like to see for the Village Center. All that research, town hall feedback, and individual suggestions have resulted in the plans being scaled back to making smaller scale improvements to the current design of the Village Center and protecting the feel that so many of you love. The Village Center Committee’s target is to begin the upgrades in May. The renovation of the restaurant at Granite Fall is an important project that has combined the work of the Large-Scale Project team, our food and beverage partners, and staff to create a renovation that will better serve you and create a place that our members will be proud to call their own. That project is scheduled to begin in January and bet completed for the fall season. In the spring, we will begin the upgrades to the Granite Falls South Course. This includes improving the greens, the greenside bunkers, building forward tees, along with other upgrades to get that course in excellent condition for the future. This is scheduled to be completed to be opened simultaneously with the new restaurant at Granite Falls. I want to thank the Golf Advisory Committee and our staff for developing this project. Our Technology Committee has worked diligently in researching the best technology company to serve our organization and our members. This will not only be the technological backbone of all our business functions but it will greatly expand the member services and experience when making reservations, buying tickets, and following the calendars of all our many activities, clubs, and events. It will allow clubs to improve their web presence and visibility as important parts of our community. Our website will be greatly improved in allowing you to do more through the website, improving communications, and representing your great community. This is targeted to begin roll out in September. We are looking at how to best represent your community to those that would potentially come here to live. You will hear this referred to as branding and I want to explain what this really means. This is your community. Branding is not to change you but to best represent what you are, what you love, and what is important to you. We want an excellent representation of what SCG is so that we can attract those who will also love and protect what is important to us. In short, our branding efforts are not to change who we are. It is to attract those that want to live here to be part of who we are. Thank you, David W. David Twiggs

WEEDS
Friendly Reminder From Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
Welcome back
RESIDENTS
If you are just getting back into town and you are finding that your game might be a little rusty, I want to remind you that me and my staff are available for lessons to help get that rust off. It is amazing on how just one lesson can improve your game and give you more enjoyment and confidence.
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
Staff is looking forward to another spectacular season. I want to invite all of you to come out to the three golf shops and look at all of the great new merchandise that has been arriving. We feel that this is our best year ever for merchandise selection and hope that you agree. Staff wants to remind everyone that is just getting back into town to remember to bring your resident card with you every time you check in and remember to wear a mask. Every resident must check in with the golf shop with their I.D. card in order to receive the resident rates. To help keep our operating cost down and to make it easier for you, we have a credit book available. A credit book is a way for you to place an amount of money on an account and every time you play or buy something, it deducts from that account. It saves us the credit card swiping fees and still allows you to get the benefit of using a credit card.

FROM THE LIFESTYLES MANAGER
Lorena Nieto Lifestyles Manager
This has been a year like no other. Generosity, kindness and resilience are words that come to my mind to describe our Community. Here in Activities, we work closely with our Chartered Clubs. During this pandemic, our clubs have exhibited kindness in many ways. From making masks for donation, to handmade gifts given to our front-line healthcare workers – this Grand Community shines. We are all looking forward to a renewed season. Keeping positive and focusing on the
prospect of better days, that I am hopeful, are soon to come. Keeping in touch with family during these times has been made so much simpler. Our phones, our iPads, our computers‌embrace all that technology has to offer and reach out to those most important to you. It has been reiterated many times, but the saying is so true, we are all in this together. I wish everyone a season filled with Peace, Love and Joy. Above all, stay happy, stay healthy and stay safe.
Visit us on suncitygrand.com or contact us at 623-546-7449. Thank you for your continued support of your SCG Activities Department.
Wishing you and yours t he very best for t he New Year!

Preserving the ruins of three Spanish mission communities, this Arizona national park includes the remarkably well-preserved Mission San Jose de Tumacacori, built in the 1750’s, to replace a much older mission—the first in southern Arizona. After decades of tumultuous history—abandoned and in disrepair—Theodore Roosevelt declared this site Tumacacori National Monument in 1908, and restoration began. FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
KEEPING YOUR overall safety IN MIND overall safety. We will continue to follow recommendations and requirements by the CDC, Arizona Department of Health, and our own board of directors.
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Among the ever-changing information regarding COVID-19 and how society responds to the COVID-19
We heard early on, and the evidence is ever growing, about the mental health toll and reduced physical involvement as a result of our society’s response to the pandemic. Although we agree that action must be taken to augment safety by implementing specific protocols, SCG Fitness also understands the value of strengthening our
their existing fitness level. Therefore, it appears that best practices reveal that we take responsibility to protect those we may expose, especially having little to zero knowledge of their potential risk. I have yet to meet an individual who is excited at the prospect of wearing a mask as part of their everyday life, but I believe that for each of us, our personal success is dependent on our commitment to prioritize the unity of the whole and support measures that protect us all. As we go forward, it is relevant that our daily decisions to invest in our
health raises our immunity to health threats. Not only physically, but mentally as well. SCG Fitness is currently offering sessions to visit the gym, pools, and walking track. We’ve scheduled a limited number of group fitness classes in person and through Zoom. Enjoy the beauty of our community by taking walks now that the weather is more cooperative. As we persist in adopting the policies by the Dept. of Health and our board of directors, we strongly urge that you seek opportunities to stay physically active, and stay connected with one another.

“Art is in my soul, creating, imagining and producing new designs for my abstract stain glass tapestries and sculptures. Each abstract stain glass piece tells a story from top to bottom. Using a variety of colored glass and complementary accents keeps the viewer interest so they can see the story from top to bottom. The flow of the stain glass and accents help tell the story of the natural environment we all love.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SUCCESSFUL AGING
to provide safe spaces for our residents to access and express authentic feelings. In some cases, we have been using virtual technology for safe, socially distanced exchanges. People underestimate the community of age when it comes to trying new things, like Zoom, but our residents are developing new skills every day. Many of their children are initiating and supporting these pathways of communication and connection.”
Rabbi Mindie Snyder joined The Colonnade in September 2019, and what a year it has been since she started. Her role is to serve as a chaplain for all people. This is a position Rabbi Mindie has held in various locations and communities. For more than 30 years, she has served people of all faiths, as well as those who are secular, unaffiliated and spiritual, atheists, agnostics, humanists. The scope of her work addresses individuals, families and groups. “I attend to people within the realm of pastoral, or spiritual care. The breath of service is inclusive and diverse, regardless of one’s orientation to religious tradition, faith or lack thereof,” Rabbi Mindie said. “COVID-19 has given us abundant opportunity for introspection, for looking at things differently; for looking at our lives in a deep way. My position as a chaplain can serve to shepherd people through some really tough times.” For example, a resident may be suffering a loss, such as death of a spouse, the change in a life partner’s personality and function due to a form of dementia, or other lifecycle events may trigger a need for interaction with a chaplain. Having a spiritual leader at The Colonnade is part the community’s focus on the Masterpiece Living® (MPL) lifestyle. MPL is a holistic approach to successful aging, based on the fact that how we age depends more on lifestyle choices (70%) than simply genetics (30%), and that by staying active and reducing our risk for disease and injury, we can continue to learn and grow as we age. 22
MPL targets four components of a healthy lifestyle: physical activity, social interaction, intellectual stimulation and spiritual engagement. Like most communities that cater to adults, who are age 60 and older, residents of The Colonnade did not come together during Easter and Passover this year. COVID-19 had just been identified and major restrictions were in place to maintain and reinforce everyone’s safety. As fall settled in at The Colonnade, the community was able to gather in small groups for the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur and the festival of Sukkot. Those who attended included our Jewish and nonJewish residents. “In the case of non-Jewish residents, they come to learn during the Jewish Holy Days. My role is not just as a liturgical facilitator, but also a teacher,” Rabbi Mindie said. “I am frequently an educator, building bridges across cultural boundaries, even within the multidenominational Jewish community.
“Tradition” has many sides to it. Rabbi Mindie has attended to residents of The Colonnade and our sister communities Grandview Terrace in Sun City West and La Loma Village in Litchfield park helping them to adapt traditions during COVID-19. “Providing some semblance of the familiar, in terms of gathering – having those moments to come together to pray, study and feel like a community again has been incredibly healing for people. The fall began with the Jewish High Holidays that we celebrated in an adapted way. This was a case of ‘something was better than nothing, but also what occurred was meaningful to people for different reasons.”
The Colonnade is a community with a thirst for learning and a shared commitment of caring. Our religious experiences become not just balm for the soul, but they are frequently educational moments, where people can learn and grow.”
Everybody understands their religious affiliation, if they have one. However, a person’s spiritual and religious orientations can be rather nuanced, so our team of chaplains takes that into account when providing spiritual care and creating programs.
As the pandemic continues to impact our lives, many are looking for ways to maintain meaningful family and religious traditions.
“My job is to touch as many bases as possible: to lift spirits, to comfort, to encourage sharing, to implement opportunities for growth and
The broader clergy community has adopted opportunities for congregational members to meet remotely. At this stage of the pandemic, it is possible to find many online resources for safe worship. “In terms of enriching personal experiences, I’ve also spoken with residents about rituals they can create when they are alone. It is an amazing time right now to be innovative with sacred time and sacred space, as we endure COVID.” As an organization, Sun Health began the winter holiday season with Operation Thanksgiving. This is an annual a program where residents and team members (employees) donate money, time and effort to assemble boxes of Thanksgiving meals for Sun Health team members in need. In 2019, Sun Health gave 75 boxes to team members in need. During the week of Thanksgiving 2020, many people safely worked together to distribute more than 80 boxes. As Hanukah and Christmas approach, Rabbi Mindie and the other chaplains provide frequent spiritual care. Unable to travel or receive visitors, residents are missing their families, they may not be feeling well, or they have lost a loved one.
Grand Lifestyles | December 2020 | suncitygrand.com
Since people are not able to safely attend church services in the way that they used to, The Colonnade continues to have Catholic worship and Communion services on site. In addition, residents who are members of other local Christian congregations are able to experience worship and Communion services, in limited numbers, socially distanced, in the La Vita Room. “Because of COVID, we are providing opportunities to gather in small groups with religious leaders of residents’ congregations,” Rabbi Mindie added. For Hanukkah, The Colonnade has a brandnew menorah (Hannukiah) that will be lit in real time, celebrating the first night: Thursday, Dec. 10th. Attendees will gather in safe distances to enjoy foods of the holiday, including a latke buffet, if circumstances permit. Then we have Shabbat, which is the holiest day on the Hebrew calendar. Shabbat begins at sundown Friday night and continues through Saturday at sundown. The revolutionary idea of Shabbat is something we don’t want to minimize during these winter holidays,
especially because of how it can nurture and elevate us in these pandemic times. Shabbat’s foundation includes the restoration of the spirit by pressing the reset button on our week. It fosters the opportunity for unplugging from the stressors of the work, for invoking calm, forgiveness and reconciliation, joy and all kinds of things that we aspire to as human beings that can make the world a better place. For Christmas, Rev. David Klumpenhower and Rev. Alrick Headley are planning to have their annual Christmas services at The Colonnade, both for the Independent Living residents as well as those living at The Colonnade’s Assisted Living and Memory Support Center. There will also be an outdoor Christmas sing-along event with hot chocolate and Christmas cookies. Additionally, weekly bible studies, men’s and women’s fellowship groups and Sunday Christian worship services continue to be held, while adhering to important safety protocols. “We are fundamentally counting our blessings each day. The longer we keep COVID out of our campus, the healthier our community remains in every way. That has been the orientation this year. Therefore, we are in a place of thanksgiving. Many community members have said they are so happy and grateful that they are here. They feel safe and cared for at The Colonnade,” Rabbi Mindie said. That is a really big deal and surely something to celebrate!”
To get in touch with Rabbi Mindie, please call 623-236-3792 or send her an email at Mindie.Snyder@SunHealth.org. Grand Lifestyles | December 2020 | suncitygrand.com

FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
“I WANT TO REBOOT 2020, IT CAME WITH A VIRUS”
Welcome back, seasonal residents!
Eugene “Gene” Neigoff here and I am a member of the Board of Directors. I was assigned to write this article after I commented that we needed to tell our winter residents what was going on. I should have kept my mouth shut. Telling an engineer to write a descriptive article is an oxymoron. I hope this will be clear and concise. Those who spend the summers away from the heat are probably wondering what been happening here at Sun City Grand? The last seven months have been filled with many changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the early stages of the pandemic, we went into a virtual quarantine and remained in isolation for about eight weeks. The Board of Directors began holding all required meetings via Zoom, to keep information current and connect with the community. In April, the Board hired our new General Manager, David Twiggs, who has been a great help in implementing the reopening phases of the community. In May, we began opening up outside amenities. Following the direction of the State, county, CDC, and our legal counsel, the Board devised the “Master Reopening Plan & Guidelines,” which all reopening’s in Grand must follow. This document contains information such as wearing facemasks, maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet, etc. We have a responsibility to the community to keep safe and ensure that we all can feel secure in this pandemic. Therefore, when choosing to participate in reopened amenities & services, the Board and CAM are requiring a signed “COVID-19 24
Outdoor Activities and Facilities
To help ease your mind when returning to outdoor activities and facilities a process was developed where all outdoor activities had to submit their reopening plans to the Lifestyles Advisory Committee, and after the screening, were then submitted to the Board for review and adoption. CAM takes the necessary steps to facilitate the reopening of the facility involved. All reopening information from facilities to clubs is available on www.suncitygrand.com. See the table on next page of Outdoor activities that are approved and a synopsis of the requirements placed by the club or department proposals of reopening.
Indoor Facilities and Clubs The most complicated areas of discussions were and still are the use of shared indoor facilities. Here we have had numerous problems. Working with CAM, the City of Surprise, and Governors Executive Orders we have instituted the following special safety protocols: 1. Installation of MERV13 filters similar to hospitals for air filtration. 2. At scheduled times during the day, we will be closing facilities for cleaning by staff. 3. Requiring masks for all persons in the building at all times except when eating in Grand Café. 4. Limiting occupancy to 25% of fire code limits per the governor’s guidelines, this
will change as the time goes on. Please refer to suncitygrand.com under reopening and reservation for additional information.
Food & Beverage Now for the questions, a lot of people are asking. What is going on with the dining within SCG? Here are some of the answers. n On September 15th we signed a 10-year contract with Unidine, a division of the COMPASS GROUP, the second-largest food and beverage service organization in the world, for the operation of our restaurants, the Grand Cafe, the Snack shops on the golf courses, as well as mobile Kiosks as they are required. Angela’s with present management will continue to be operated as a separate contract until their lease is up. Unidine will also operate the restaurant planned for the other side of the 303. n On October 1st Unidine will reopen the new Grand Cafe with sit-down dining and a new menu. They will have a wine bar, and the $1 soft ice cream cones we all like. Hours for all restaurants will be 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, 7 days a week. Golf Course Snack hours are not yet set and will be in accordance with the usage of the courses. n Sometime in November Unidine will start a carry-out and home delivery service for SCG using their own personnel. This will assist the homeowners during the time COCO's will be closed for renovation. n COCO's will remain open until their lease ends on December 31, 2020. n We have started to design the new restaurant facility (the existing

Cream Cheese Rugelach INGREDIENTS
For the cream cheese dough 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for the work surface n 1 tablespoon granulated sugar n 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt n 2 sticks unsalted butter (8 oz), cut into chunks and chilled n 8 ounces cream cheese, cut into chunks n 2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt n 2 large egg yolks n
For the raisin filling
One (15-ounce) box golden raisins Enough water to cover the raisins n 1/4 cup granulated sugar n Pinch salt n 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon n 1 teaspoon vanilla extract n 1/2 cup walnuts or hazelnuts n 2 to 3 tablespoons rum n n
For the apricot filling
One (15-ounce) box dried apricots Enough water (or orange juice) to cover the apricots n 1/4 cup granulated sugar n Pinch salt n 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon n 1 teaspoon vanilla extract n 1/2 cup walnuts or hazelnuts n One (12-ounce) jar orange marmalade n 2 to 3 tablespoons orange brandy n n
DIRECTIONS
Make the cream cheese dough
1. Toss the flour, sugar, and salt in a food processor and pulse just until combined. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles mostly coarse sand with a few pea-size blobs of butter. Add the cream cheese and sour cream and pulse just until the ingredients come together into a somewhat shaggy dough. 2. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and divvy it up into 4 equal portions, being careful not to overwork the dough. Gently pat each portion of dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for about 45 minutes. 3. Make one of the fillings a. For the raisin filling: Dump the raisins in a medium saucepan and pour in just enough cold water to cover. Add the sugar, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla and gently simmer over low heat until almost all the water is absorbed and the raisins have turned plump, anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the heat and and size of the pan. Let the raisins cool slightly. Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and pulse until the raisins are coarsely chopped. Add the walnuts and process until a paste forms. Stir in as much rum as you fancy and let the filling cool to room temperature. b. For the apricot filling: Dump the apricots in a medium saucepan and pour in just enough cold water to cover. Add the sugar, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla. Gently simmer over low heat until almost all the water has been absorbed and the apricots have turned soft and plump, 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the heat and the size of the pan. Let the apricot mixture cool slightly. Transfer the apricot mixture to a blender or food processor and pulse until it’s coarsely chopped. Add the walnuts and marmalade and process until a paste forms. Stir in as much brandy as you fancy and let the filling cool to room temperature.
Prep/Total Time: 40 min./2 hr. Makes about 36 Rugelach 4. Assemble the rugelach 5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. 6. Roll 1 portion of the dough into a rectangle somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick. (If the dough doesn’t roll easily, let it rest at room temperature for a few minutes and then try again.) Spread the dough with up to 1/4 of the filling, smoothing the filling almost but not quite all the way to the edge of the dough. Starting with the long side of the dough, tightly roll up the dough and filling into a jelly roll. Using your palms, gently flatten the roll ever so slightly and wrap it in plastic wrap. Place the filled rolled dough in the freezer or refrigerator and repeat with the remaining dough and filling. 7. Take 1 of the filled rolled dough portions out of the fridge or freezer and cut it into 1 1/2-inchwide slices. Place each slice, cut side down, on the prepared sheet. Whisk the egg yolks and brush very lightly over each slice and then sprinkle, sparingly or generously, as you see fit, with sugar. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes. Repeat with the remaining portions of dough. 8. Bake the rugelach for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Let the rugelach cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. We think you can figure out what to do next.

STORY OF CHANUKAH
The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their GreekSyrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. When the Jews took part in the rededication of the Second Temple they witnessed what they believe to be a miracle. Even though there was only enough untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights, leaving them time to find a fresh supply. This wondrous event inspired Jewish sages to proclaim a yearly eight day festival. For that reason, only one candle is lit on the first night. Two candles are lit on the second night. Three candles are lit on the third night until all eight candles are lit on the last night. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with lighting of the Menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

LEARNING THE SCG COMMUNITY Article submitted by Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member
Shortly after my move to Sun City Grand some 7 years ago I ventured out for short drives around Grand to learn a bit more about my new community. On my short drives I made this discovery about the naming of some of the roads: I learned that Clearview became Mountain View; Limestone became Estrella Vista which became Monteverde; Saddle Ridge became Sandia Park; to the west of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Canyon and to the east of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Ridge; and, Calistoga Dr. became Desert Light Dr. which became Parra Dr. which became Alameda Dr. Whew! Initially I was content with knowing the locations of Cimarron, and the Adobe. And, of course, restaurant locations out on the Autobahn also known as Bell Road. One evening about a month after my move I had a man at my door telling me that I had left my garage door open. He identified himself as being from
C.H.A.P.S. and gave me a brief synopsis of what C.H.A.P.S. was about and invited me to come to one of their meetings. It was during my attendance at that meeting that I decided joining C.H.A.P.S. would be a great way to learn my new community and make a few new acquaintances. After all they were only asking that I serve two 2-hour shifts per month. (And, I could choose which days I was available to serve.) C.H.A.P.S. normally holds a meeting the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza. But, COVID-19 has temporarily made it necessary to put our meetings on hold. Will keep you posted when we can safely return.
WE RECOGNIZE YOUR SERVICE Since we are not able to hold our meetings we have twelve people we would like to recognize for their service to C.H.A.P.S. and SCG. Five years of service: Mike Aubuchon, Paul Hessler, Dan Newman, and Nancy Newman. 10 years of service: Roger Baum, Jim
Grand Lifestyles | December 2020 | suncitygrand.com
Fenley, Linda Fenley, Donna Grove, and Ted Grove. 15 years of service: Jonita Bigelow, Loren Hansen, and Tom Masterson. Thank you for your years of dedicated service!
C.H.A.P.S. is a volunteer organization made up of approximately 140 residents. C.H.A.P.S. two main functions are Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch. Very briefly we check for open garage doors and street lights that are out when out on Evening Patrol, and we monitor vacated homes whereas we do walk arounds to check for unlocked doors, and unlocked windows when we are out performing Vacation Watch in the morning hours. We always go out in teams of two and drive the vehicles provided by CAM. Those two processes are explained more in depth in previous and future publications. Do you know how many times W. Encantada Dr. changes names? Join C.H.A.P.S. and you will know in no time.
WE NEED YOU! Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way. Call Julie Madden (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! We will put you on our list and someone will contact you to provide info as to when training sessions will be provided. 39

ANIMALS IN CRISIS? I N

What does that mean? Do you know anyone with a cat or dog? I bet you do. Well, what do you think would happen if the owners got in an accident, or a single owner became seriously ill? They may have someone who will probably care for their pet, but will paramedics know how to find them? This is where CHANCE Shelter comes in. Chance was founded in 2015 to fill this critical need. Chance Shelter is a nonprofit “no kill” shelter that takes the pet in and has foster homes to safely care for the pet until the owner is back home and able to take over. How does it work?
Through referrals which are sent from local hospital social workers, first responders, care facilities, funeral homes and Surprise Human Services and Vitality. Chance Shelter receives the referral and then makes arrangements with these facilities to respond with the necessary protocol
G R A N D ?
and equipment to care for these pets. First responders are thankful to have a place to call when would otherwise have to leave behind a pet without a caretaker. This is all done at no cost to the owners. There are currently 83 volunteers working for CHANCE and about 23 foster families who will take in the pet any time of the day or night. If you like knowing that Surprise has a great resource like this and you would like to help, here’s what you should know. The shelter is purchasing a van in the next 60 days, properly equipped for animal transport. They have raised most of the money needed to complete the purchase. Most……. Also in the works is the creation of a dedicated building. Land north of Grand in Surprise has been donated and the architect is currently designing their new building. Funds for that are just beginning to be raised.
We are lucky to have a great resource like this and whatever you can do will directly impact pet owners right here in Surprise. Thanks! Like most non-profits, operating funds are always in need. They are always seeking foster’s and volunteers to join this wonderful team. Check out their website to see how you can help: chanceshelter.org Or, you can always call me: Bob Cornfield at 925–998–1813 or bobcornfield@ gmail.com, Chance volunteer, President SCG Bocce Club.

STITCHERS
SCG Stitcher’s, Machine Embroidery SIG has been very active on Mondays in the stitcher’s room. They have 7 Embroidery machines that are being used and they have also begun to run some small group classes. Everyone who has attended is having a great time. It’s really important to be able to socialize safely with masks and keeping 6 feet apart. Their Director, Judy McClendon has set up a system (Sign up genius) for members to register to use the Embroidery machines. Since the Sewing SIG has not been in the room on Mondays it allows for more members from the Machine Embroidery SIG to use the room with the permission from the M.E. Director. Stitcher’s has had a very successful General Meeting on zoom and we will be sending out our Slate of Officers and our Budget for 2021. We have been using the Stitcher’s room everyday from 9 to 1 but each SIG has their day to be in the room. Any questions please contact me at Paulaszoo@ aol.com.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
All About Cookies What are cookies? Why do I have to agree to allow cookies every time I go to a new website while I am browsing on the Internet? Marie from SCG, a happy homeowner
Dear Marie, Cookies affect how we surf the web, and for the most part, they make the browsing experience more efficient and personalized. To understand the internet concept of cookies, consider one of many unverified stories of how the term “cookies” came to be. Remember the children’s story about Hansel and Gretel? They tried to mark their trail through the woods by dropping “cookie crumbs” along the way. Similarly, internet cookies “track” where you have been on the internet: time spent on the website, clicked buttons, preferences or settings chosen, research topics or products, name, address, and purchases. Practically, storing personal data and preferences reduces download time, and cookies from websites that you use on a regular basis are reasonable to accept. Website owners are better able to target you with recommendations on purchases, content or services that might be of interest to
you based on your past viewing and purchase history; e.g., you may open a site to order a sweatshirt and a “cookie” provides a link to sweatpants. Generally, such “first-party cookies” are safe if you are browsing reputable websites who track your preferences only for their use. However, many websites embed advertising for other products or services. These “third-party cookies” allow advertisers or analytics companies to track your browsing history across the web on any sites that contain their ads. If you ever wondered why advertisements seem to follow you throughout your Internet browsing for something that you recently searched, it is third-party cookies that make this linkage possible. Ever check the website for a vacation spot and begin seeing ads on other sites of cheap airflights to that destination? Cookies are stored in small text files on YOUR computer and generally they are
considered safe. However, you can view and delete cookies quite easily. The process will vary from browser to browser, but generally, you should go to your browser settings and look for the privacy or security section. The next step is to view the cookies stored by the browsers and then choose which cookies you want to delete. If you feel they pose a security threat, slow down your browser, or store too much personal information, delete your cookies on a regular basis. Additionally, you may not want your website viewing history stored on a public or shared computer. Other options to control cookies include using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or using the private or incognito browsing option-- which you can find available on most browsers. This will automatically get rid of any cookies placed on your computer when you close the browser session. There are also some browsers that help you automatically manage tracking the cookies; e.g., https://brave.com. In answer to your final question, as to why you need to check a box to “allow” cookies, the European Union is responsible. Basically, how websites place the cookies on your computer and how they use them-- was a specific concern of the European Union. Because of privacy issues and data collected by cookies, the EU (European

Zoom Chat Zoom Talk Zoom Demo Zoom Bingo Zoom Poker VP Pinochle What are those? Those are what keep the Deaf SCG residents busy in spite of the pandemic! There is no week without a Zoom ‘gettogether’; we have them at least twice a week. We play Poker through Zoom, using Poker Star online and also Pinochle through Videophones, using Trickster online. There is always something to do, something to talk about, something to share with each other.
prevented us from ‘getting together’ through Zoom, VP and Facetime. A group of men and women bike around SCG and trails outside of Surprise at least three times a week. Many others take leisure walks on SCG’s walkways and trails. Others meet at the swimming pools and the gym. Four times a month Zoom Chats take place of our socials, three of which used to be held at Cimarron and the other in Surprise.
The COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped nor
Twice a month Zoom Talks involved presentations such as “Most Embarrassing Moments”, “50’s and 60’s”, “Organizing Important Documents”, “50’s and 60’s”, and “Unforgettable Events”, all done by our own residents. We had a special speaker from Florida on “Life Planning for Seniors”. We also played “Trivia about SCG” on Kahoot! on Zoom. One Sunday a month, Zoom Demos involved “Canning jams” and “Show and Tell” during which we demonstrated what we worked on since the pandemic started. Examples were 3D products including an 18-wheel truck, stained glass, rock painting, quilts, alcohol ink, diamond painting with beads, puzzles,

creating cards and more. In addition to the above Zoom gatherings, private groups text, email and videophone each other at various times. Many of us visit our families, many throughout the country, through Zoom, Videophone and FaceTime. Since we haven’t been able to travel much during the pandemic, using the Zoom connects us with others much more than in the past. In other words, we don’t have to miss any workshops, webinars, memorial services and more, thanks to the Zoom. Thanks to today’s phenomenal technology we can stay in touch with more people and stay inspired, active and talented. Sincerest thanks go to those who sent me photos and special thanks go to Susie Tighe for preparing the collages of photos to include with this article. 51

Freedom Plaza Residents
leave the holiday decorating to us...
and the shopping, serving and clean-up of daily fine dining to us, too. Residents enjoy Holiday entertainment by the light of our Tree and Menorah in our Grand Lobby or any of the other twenty amenity areas under one roof - all without needing to go outside in December chill.
You can enjoy this active independent senior living lifestyle knowing that higher levels of living, including Medicare-certified skilled nursing and rehab, are all available on our campus. Year-end discounts of $ 10K off select floorplans still available with 2019 pricing held through December 2021.
Come visit to see our two-story Christmas tree in the Grand Lobby.
