FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

POSTURE, GRIP AND ALIGNMENT

Over the years I have seen many golfers make the golf swing more complicated than it should be and they are working on too many things. Try this out to maybe make things a little easier. Just remember PGA: Posture, Grip and Alignment.

Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

POSTURE

Your feet should be shoulder width apart, with your weight balanced on the balls of your feet. Flex your knees, bend at the hips (not the waist) and keep your spine straight.

GRIP

Loosen your death grip on your club. You want to hold the club securely without squeezing too tightly. You also want to keep your body relaxed and not rigid.

Vardon Grip: Probably the most popular and common golf grip, the Vardon or "overlapping" grip is achieved by fitting the pinkie finger of the trailing hand between the index and middle finger of the lead hand.

small hands sometimes find the ten finger grip the most comfortable. To achieve it, simply lock the pinkie finger of the trailing hand close against the index finger of the lead hand.

Interlocking Grip: The next most common grip works better for people with less powerful forearms, weak wrists or smaller hands. With this grip, the hands are literally locked together by curling the pinkie finger of the trailing hand around the index finger of the lead hand. The downside of this grip is that, with less finger pressure controlling the club, the handle can sometimes drift against the palms.

ALIGNMENT

Ten Finger (baseball) Grip: Beginners, players with joint pain and those with

Picture a set of railroad tracks running from the ball to your target. Your body is aligned on the inside rail. Your ball is on the outside rail, which runs in a straight line from the ball to your target. So just remember PGA. A great setup position gives you a better chance to make a great swing. FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

What You Need to Know About Working Out After Getting the COVID Vaccine This month’s article comes from Very Well Fit contributing writer and registered dietician Elizabeth Shaw, MS, RDN, CPT Can You Workout After Receiving the COVID-19 Vaccine?

Allison Adams Fitness Manager By Elizabeth Shaw, MS, RDN, CPT n

n

n

How your body will respond after receiving the COVID-19 is completely individualized. Some may experience no symptoms, while others may have more significant side effects. Monitor how you are feeling, and assess if your regular workout needs to be modified or a rest day is in order after receiving the vaccine. Continue to follow appropriate safety measures when working out, especially in public. Just because you are vaccinated doesn't mean the others around you are.

If you've ever received a flu shot in your upper arm, you may remember that muscle soreness that can linger around for a few days. Well, according to those who've received the vaccine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this feeling may also be common after getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

14

Yes, you can, but you may not feel like it. While there are no specific guidelines at this time put out by the CDC regarding fitness protocols post-vaccination, it's very important that individuals use common sense, and assess how their body feels in the immediate hours and days after receiving the shot.

What Fitness Experts Want You To Know Again, there are no standardized recommendations as of today on how to proceed post-vaccination with your workout regimen. However, two fitness experts have some sage advice to take note of. Damien Evans, a certified personal trainer and coowner of the fitness chain Eat the Frog Fitness in Southern California, says, "The most important thing to understand is that if you are showing signs or symptoms of being sick, this is your body working overtime to make you well again. Any extra highintensity activities would be adding to that stress." He adds, "What many people forget is that exercise is a positive stress on the body when you are healthy. However, if your body is

under large amounts of stress already—in this case the immune system is working hard and firing on all cylinders as it processes the vaccine—then throwing extra stress through exercise will be doing more harm than good." Evans suggests listening to your body and thinking more conservatively as to how to exercise in the days after being vaccinated. For example, he encourages his clients to take a walk outside (if weather permits) or try a slow flow yoga class. Harbstreet, who has a background in sports nutrition and fitness, agrees with Evans' philosophy, noting, "Even if you don’t feel like you’re experiencing severe symptoms (beyond fatigue, muscle soreness, and body aches), your body is still working to mount an immune response. You might feel like forging ahead with your usual

workouts, but you can also adjust as needed after you start to accommodate how your body responds. A rest day is not a wasted day when it comes to fitness and overall wellbeing." Listen to your body and its individual needs. A rest day is not a wasted day when it comes to fitness and overall wellbeing! — CARA HARBSTREET, MS, RD, LD

What Safety Precautions Should You Practice Post-Vaccination? It's important to remember that just because you have been vaccinated does not mean all those who workout around you have been too. place is recommended— that means wearing a mask or facial covering, practicing safe social distancing, and sanitizing equipment after use.

What This Means for You Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to the question of how the COVID-19 vaccine will affect your next workout. Based on experience from avid fitness enthusiasts and experts in the field, getting the vaccination should not derail your fitness progress. It may require you to engage in some modified exercises or take a rest day or two, but in most cases, you can return to normal activity within a few days. *SCG Community Association, its Board, its employees and all other entities within SCG do not guarantee, endorse, nor promote any of the products, services or individuals advertised herein and assume no responsibility or liability for the veracity of the statements made by any contributors.

SCG RESIDENTS

contribute to LOCAL BUSINESS recognized by Congress By Bob Cornfield

I live in Sun City Grand and am a volunteer with CHANCE SHELTER because they are filling a need that can help many of us in an emergency and only when there is a crisis situation: first responders find a pet and no one around to take care of it. They can call Chance Shelter to foster the animal temporarily. I want to share this exciting news with our residents. On February 2nd our local Congresswoman from District #8, Debbie Lesko, presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition to CHANCE SHELTER. This certificate is for a person or company that provides a special service to our local community. Chance Shelter is a non-profit here in Surprise founded by Audra Colson in 2015. Audra was a volunteer with first responders and saw first-hand the need for someone to care for the pets of those residents that are in crisis and need the support to allow them to keep their pets when they are well again. The mission of Chance Shelter is to provide compassionate care to animals through adoptions, education, crisis intervention, and community involvement. Audra and her team of over 70 volunteers are waiting on architectural drawings for a new building in Surprise. Chance Shelter can be reached at www. info@chanceshelter.org or 602-394-1595.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION

THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW Did you know that the reason a letter, discussing the election and how to vote, is sent to the address each community member has on file with the Membership Office is because the state requires us to do so? They require that officially we make an effort to reach each community member and presently the only way to do that is by mail. Until the state changes its statute this is our only official means of notification. Did you know that all community members who had an email address on file with the Membership Office received an email link from Vote-Now, our voting tabulator, taking them directly to the ballot? This link was sent after 1201 AM on the first day of voting and could be used anytime during the voting period. So for future elections and ease of voting if you don’t have an email address on file as yet, think about doing so. By sending this link, in addition to the letter, voting couldn’t have been easier. People reported that their votes were cast in under a minute. And those who used the Vote Now bubble on SCG’s home page also experienced complete ease of voting. Here is just one comment from a voter. “Well, that was easy! Thanks for the good candidate information and a smooth voting process.” And another. “Thank you for making this process easy to navigate and ultimately, a minimal commitment of time. It was almost effortless!” Did you know that the candidate’s statements were published in the February Lifestyles magazine so that everyone had an additional opportunity to read them other than online? And they could also be found on posters at the Grand Cafe and both fitness centers. Did you know that two neighborhoods had over 50% of their residents voting; ten had over 40%; and nine had under 30%? Did you know that there were 757 total zoom and vimeo views by our community members of the first Q&A and 883 total views of the second? Thank you for your interest!!!!! Did you know that the last date for voter eligibility was December 31, 2020? What that means is anyone who owned a home on or before that date was eligible to vote in the 2021 Board Election. All those who purchased a home after that date will be eligible to vote in the 2022 election. Did you know that this was a remarkable year for e-voting? 3212 electronic votes made it so. Having less than 100 votes cast by paper ballot is a huge achievement for this community. The state requires an alternative method for voting beyond electronic voting so by using telephone votes, (this year 45) we can comply without the use of paper ballots if we choose to do so. Did you know that it’s volunteers who make the Board Election happen along with the never ending support and help of an outstanding CAM staff? Board Members are volunteers who give their time and energy to make SCG a wonderful place to live. To step up and seek a position on the Board shows their desire to make a huge commitment to our community. Members of the Grand Election Team, all volunteers, worked diligently to make the election run smoothly in these virtual times. And without the constant help and support of the Communications Team and Membership Manager we might have to hire someone to get the job done.

step out

So, to those community members who took the time to learn about the candidates and vote—thank you! To those of you who worked to bring the election to us—thank you! And to those who stepped up and ran for the Board, the biggest thank you of all!

What Sets Sun City Grand Apart? IN A WORD ... VOLUNTEERISM

Our Sun City Grand community is like a small city. 17,000 community members, a $22 million-dollar annual budget, hundreds of acres filled with amenities. One of the many things that makes us different from other communities is the way in which we’re governed and how major decisions are made. Many other large active adult communities are run by third-party management firms that often focus on dues collection, financial oversight, record keeping and vendor management. We believe that there are significant advantages to having our community led by the talented individuals who make their home here. Sun City Grand is governed by seven elected community members who comprise our Board of Directors, along with their many appointed committees. Each of our Board members is a resident homeowner, and they work together on behalf of all community members for the greater good, setting policy and providing executive leadership and strategic governance. They oversee the community's short- and long-term goals, including major projects and infrastructure improvements, such as community enhancements, land use, and finances and strategic planning. Hundreds of volunteer Committee members support these efforts and work to maintain and continually improve the beautiful community we call home. Day-to-day operations are carried out by our Community Association Management (CAM) team of experienced professionals, headed by our General Manager, who in turn reports to the Board of Directors. Hundreds of other capable Volunteers provide exceptional value to our community by participating in programs and providing services that enhance our Grand lifestyle. Our volunteers’ many contributions are irreplaceable!

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

Don’t Be A ‘Fool’ When it Comes to Taxes April 1, the day you may be reading this magazine, is known as April Fool’s Day, a date for practical jokes and pranks with a history going back to the 15th Century. For Greg and Kay Haro, however, April 1 is a day to celebrate a great decision they made – moving into The Colonnade, a Sun Health Communities Life Plan community two years ago. For the Haros, the decision was anything but foolish for many reasons, including meeting new friends and the feeling of safety and security they have. However, they also truly benefited financially, something to celebrate with Tax Day, April 15, approaching. “I’ve never gotten money back on my taxes before, but we have seen some major benefits living in a nonprofit senior living community,” said Greg. “Last year, we were able to write off 20% of our entrance fee. And, this year and in future years we can write off a nice percentage of our monthly service fees.” According to Tammy Ayala, Sales and Marketing manager, contracts come with the benefits of tax deductions, depending on what type of contract someone enters into. “At The Colonnade, we have three contract options, including ‘100% Refundable,’ which allows a person to deduct a percentage of their monthly service fees as a health care expense; as

well as our ‘Traditional’ and ‘Traditional with Healthcare’ contracts, which allow a person to deduct a percentage of their entrance fee and monthly services fees, as established by our chief financial officer.” Of course, everyone must discuss personal tax status and write-offs with a tax professional. “In addition to these tax benefits, our residents can avoid facing increased health care costs as their needs change since we are a Life Plan community,” Tammy said. “And, depending on their contact type, if they have or do not have long-term care insurance and if they are a couple or single individual, there are ways that we can show them the financial benefits of moving here. We can tell someone about all of their options after we review their individual assets and income status, as well as review their medical status. I invite everyone to come talk to me about it.” For Greg and Kay, this was more than just a financial decision. “We are not responsible for as many things around our home now that we live here, and that has freed us up to enjoy other aspects of our lives,” Greg said.

For Kay, moving into The Colonnade was great for their children. “They really enjoy the fact that we are here, as it relieves some of the burden for them since they know we will be taken care of here, plus all the benefits we receive,” she said. Greg added “there is a lot of camaraderie living in a small community,” he said. “We have made more friends here than any of the other neighborhoods we’ve lived in. It’s a pleasurable experience seeing people we know and who know who we are, too.” The Haros really enjoy The Colonnade team members who work on campus, too. “I marvel at the staff who are all so professional and dedicated,” he said. “They know you by name and take the time to develop conversations with you, especially at the restaurants. It’s a different experience when someone knows your name at a restaurant, you don’t find that anywhere.” One of their best experiences came after their air conditioning failed last July 4, which is not something you typically associate with a “best experience” on a day that reached 110 degrees. According to Greg, the air went out in the afternoon and we called the front desk to send someone out. Soon after, a member of the Environmental Services team was at the door. “He was getting ready to barbecue with his family, and still had a smile on his face the entire time, and it was hot outside,” Greg said. “These are the kind of people and things you find living at The Colonnade. And, I was glad to hear that he had someone to take over cooking duties at home that day. The Colonnade is truly unique.” The Colonnade is a nonprofit Sun Health Life Plan community. It’s part of Sun City Grand, and has more than 320 residents in Independent Living. The campus also offers Assisted Living and Memory Support services open to the public. We’ve successfully implemented stringent protocols in response to COVID-19 and continue to work with residents and team members to ensure a thriving, healthy lifestyle for all. With your safety in mind, our communities are open and ready to help you start planning for the future. For up-to-date information about the campus, visit SunHealthCommunities.org or call (623) 236-3770.

Friendly Reminder From Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST ABOUT USING TECHNOLOGY I'm sure each of us has our own pet peeves and issues that drive us crazy. Over time, we master one thing, but another seems to crop up. Remember when we didn’t have smart phones? And now, how did we live without them. We can’t promise to get rid of everything that “bugs” you, but we sure can try to streamline your life here in Grand. Like most of our projects, the goals are fairly simple – 1) improve operational efficiency, 2) provide better reporting to help manage the business more effectively, and 3) increase the ease of the resident experience. With a system that is 20 years old, it won’t be hard to improve, but we want to be “best in class.” Providing everyone systems that make your lives easier and more fun is the part of the equation that your resident Technology Team is working on.

residents will be able to book for their clubs and groups. We are looking for more ways to make that an easier job for those who book rooms. Check in procedures – How cool will it be to arrive for an event or class and just swipe your card, or hold up your phone or watch and walk in. It will be just that easy. Grand Learning – these opportunities will be expanded to include other classes being offered around campus.

Calendars

Your member page will hold the key to what is on your calendar. Want all events in Grand – you can have that. Want just your club events, that’s good too. How about just today’s events – swell. The flexibility to “have it your way” is almost endless. Start thinking about the possibilities of what would make your life easier here in Grand. Not everything will be available Day 1, but

within a very short time, all these things and more will be available. I’m waiting for the “lose those pounds without giving up the wine” app!! How about you? Are you spreading the word about what’s coming in September? Remember our goal is to have not one person say “what new technology?” when we make the changeover. Next month we will talk about more things you have to look forward to.

Class Reservations No more standing in line wondering if you are going to get into a class – just sign up ahead and pay to guarantee your personal spot in your favorite classes.

Event Reservations

Love to buy your tickets ahead to the events? Now it will be easier than ever to reserve and pay by credit book or credit card and view all your upcoming reservations on your personal calendar and/or your member page.

Sun City Grand State of the Union II Reprint from the News of the Day, February 10th

FOOD AND BEVERAGE OVERVIEW Don Love Retiring Board President Sun City Grand

Through the Strategic plan, research, the Hultsman report, multiple surveys and a full fledged review by the Long Range Planning Committee, Food and Beverage was easily identified as the number one amenity that was lacking in our community. This was amplified by the fact that all of the new HOA communities that were being developed offered a much higher level of offerings in that arena. The interest in the community proved to be overwhelmingly in favor of such action when over 400 appeared at a presentation of our plan and many were turned away. From there we proceeded with a selection process to bring on board a professional F and B company to help with our Vision. The process in choosing our vendor took over a year to determine the nature and the implementation of a very in-depth set of visions and financial principles we wanted to achieve. We sought to establish a well diversified and coordinated array of F and B experiences emphasizing the changing trends as we move toward the future. The main conclusion gleaned from the Hultsman study was the importance of Community here at SCG. The basic concept

24

was that to maximize the enjoyment of living in SCG we needed to focus on Community to the fullest extent possible. At the core of Community is personal interaction in enjoyable surroundings. We have wonderful amenities for much of that but lacked casual relaxation with others in the environment surrounding Food and Beverage in beautiful locations to offer the opportunities of enhanced living. Also a well diversified vision could be intertwined within our present amenities. Here is just a quick overview of what the Food and Beverage team see in our future with respect to Food and Beverage.

Village Center Area

Expanded dining and bar opportunities including menus, evening hours, and Sunday brunches. Create a greater opportunity of support for F and B on the beautiful deck of the Palm Center for various Community activities and provide F and B poolside ordering from your phone.

Granite Falls

Enhancing the quality of both Food and Beverage offerings, enclosing the present three season patio to provide a separate casual dining and a clubhouse atmosphere with sound separation, adding an outside dining patio looking down the fairway and a separate BBQ area for casual outside gatherings. Unlike most communities we have very little in the line of a Clubhouse atmosphere where people can gather after golf or other amenity use. The development of Granite Falls will remedy this.

Cimarron

Residents were promised a restaurant that never materialized and Cimarron is already two years beyond it’s planned upgrade from reserves. So rather than promising a restaurant concept we wanted to have input from Unidine to incorporate an appropriate Community centered concept for Food and Beverage. Such options to be explored are some type of Food and Beverage offerings, service to the pool, an expansion of Day Spa to include lunch and beverage offerings and possibly a coffee/health drink offering for those using the facilities. We are planning focus groups, with Unidine, to learn what the residents want

Angela’s

There is still over three years on the lease but we need to formulate our plans for the entire Desert Springs Area so we will be ready when the time comes. In continuation of the concept of Community gathering in beautiful places the Vision includes not only a complete remodeling of the restaurant and the kitchen but including dining service down by the water on the 9th hole likely connecting by walkway to the area toward an upgraded amphitheater area. There will likely be an expansion of the bar and outdoor patio services toward the golf course and a much needed sound separation between the bar and restaurant. Then the long discussed Desert Springs entertainment area around the golf course practice area will likely come to fruition including several Community gathering activities.

Grand Lifestyles | April 2021 | suncitygrand.com

Overall Community Upgrades

The Vision includes several other overall enhancements that we wish to apply campus wide. The world is swinging quickly to include technology in all areas of living. All of the new HOA’s have heavily adopted it in their offerings. We need to participate to keep relevant yet in a manner not to degrade present usage patterns for other residents. A sample of some of these options will be the use of mobile ordering and delivery poolside or elsewhere. Online or mobile pick up orders or delivery which have become so popular during the pandemic. Message notification of “popup” special offerings that are becoming popular. A loyalty program for our residents to include priority for reservations so they don’t have to stand in line as most have to do during the peak season off campus. And most of all, we don’t know what we don’t know, but technology will become more ingrained in our “Community” and we need to embrace it.

Operational Management

The benefit of one vendor managing the entire operation provides an integration of all offerings and a reduction in duplication like having a separate labor force for each venue. Employees can be moved from one venue to another to maximize efficiency. This allows for one of the sites to serve also as a commissary kitchen for common preparations. As explained to us, “It makes no sense having four locations slicing tomatoes for a salad” as an example. Unidine has a local manager with an office in the Palm Center just down the hall from the General Manager, David Twiggs. We are fortunate that David has a tremendous amount of experience in this area since he had oversight of 11 restaurants in one of his recent locations. He is delighted with our concept. This gives David and thus the community a focal point for monitoring both operations and the financials along with David Reber and the Financial Advisory Committee.

Funding the Vision

All of the building upgrades and furnishings have funds available from reserves but the bulk of the funding will come from the CARE fund. To reiterate, the CARE funds come from our new residents when they purchase their homes, not from dues. Last July due to the passing of the CC&R’s that fee now provides over 2 million a year vs the less than I million per year using the old fee. We have an excess of what we need for presently identified projects thru 2025. Due to limitation in space here such funding for all projects will be covered in the next article to come shortly.

Contract and Projections

We agreed to a ten year contract. The highlights are stated here. A ten year projection compiled by our team, Fessel International our consultant and Unidine. That projection shows a period of six quarters would be needed to break even because in planning for gearing up for a 10 year operation would require considerable expenses in the early period. Ten years is a long time so the Board instituted what we refer to as “Off Ramps,” a policy we now include in all of our large contracts, especially those of length. The contract includes KPI’s, Key Performance Indicators, which we can use to monitor and correct issues all the way to termination if that become appropriate. During the start up period SCG supplied 300k for start up costs and Unidine would absorb the first 300K in losses. At break even SCG would receive 6% of revenue for rent and Unidine would get a 5% management fee taken out of revenue and then we would split the profit evenly. The ten year projection shows the combination of rent and profit would provide SCG 10 million dollars over that ten year period.

Covid

Community gathering mentioned earlier, took on a whole new meaning with Covid. We felt opening the Village Center Cafe would be very important for Community gathering as long as we kept dining outside

Grand Lifestyles | April 2021 | suncitygrand.com

even if it would be a downside on revenue. We were already subsidizing the Cafe and always have and if we had stayed with the old Cafe it would have had a decrease in revenue due to the weather downside of outdoor dining thus an additional subsidizing would have been needed. This also allowed us to get Unidine onboard to help design both Granite Falls and Cimarron and begin the process of getting them open. Also we would be able to work out start up issues on a variety of things in a small business setting to be more fully prepared for larger openings. A small tidbit is that under the old system we paid employees wages and benefits but with Unidine on board Unidine pays them.

How Can Residents Be of Help

Please make sure you use the “Ask Us” button on the website to keep us informed of anything that will help Unidine in providing excellent service. This provides a digital trail that can be monitored and keeps Unidine and Mr Twiggs in tune with issues and solutions. Unidine and David want to hear from you.

Monitoring

Recently a monitoring program has been put into place where David Twiggs, Unidine representatives, Board VP Alan Meyer, and Rod Rankin, long time manager of large theme parks in the US and Europe (20-25 restaurants each) meet on Tuesday on all matters financial. Then David, Unidine and Rod meet on Thursday on all matters operationally. This provides an ongoing platform where all issues can be addressed. On behalf of the Board, Alan Meyer, Steve Bowen, Stephanie SloggettO’Dell, Gene Neigoff, Earle Greenberg and Barb Minick we are all looking forward to the Vision of our future. Thank you for your support. Respectfully, Don Love Retiring Board President SCG

THE FIRST 100 DAYS

PHIL AXELROD Meets 2 times on Tuesday 5/04/2021–5/11/2021 9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE $15 The “FIRST 100 DAYS”, is a concept that started in America with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He took swift action upon taking office and passed through Congress 15 important bills in his first 100 days. Each president since then has been measured by what they have accomplished in their respective first 100 days. JFK ordered the Bay of Pigs invasion 87 days into his first term. Gerald Ford gave Richard Nixon a full pardon one month after taking office. Ronald Reagan on his first day in office announced the release of the diplomats being held by Iran. Barak Obama got Congress to pass the stimulus package 29 days into his first term. What will our next President accomplish during his first 100 days? How will his first 100 days be perceived by America, and the world? We will meet to discuss his successes and failures and what the future might hold. So if you are interested in politics, this is the class for you.

WE DID IT!

Two teams of 8 players each, Pinochle Gals and Roadrunners, have been on a roll! Since last summer the Roadrunners Team has been playing Pinochle on Friday mornings and the Pinochle Gals Team on Friday afternoons. We see each other during a conference call on our videophones and at the same time play Pinochle by using the Trickster App on our iPads. For the first time on Saturday, February 27th, a pilot tournament of 4 games by the two teams was held between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., thanks to Suzy Froehle who suggested the idea. A wonderful committee including Nowell Busch, Gerry Francini, Grace Gallaway, Penny Herbold, Rosy Mikos and Susie Tighe creatively established the Winners and Losers brackets and developed guidelines for the games. Before and after the tournament began and during our lunch break we talked with each other on Zoom. We had a great time and it was so successful that we decided in addition to our weekly Friday games, we will have a cross-team match during each quarter. We plan to have our First Annual Pinochle Tournament in 2022 whether virtually or in person. All in all, this helped preserve our sanity especially during the pandemic!

POEM By Phil Bisesi I soar over the mountaintops, The wind in my face, Piercing through the air At a rapid pace, Through the clouds And into space, Touching the stars As I fly by, Then a brief glance back To say goodbye.

I WIPE AWAY A TEAR

I’M NOT THE ME I USED TO BE

By Mel Reck

By Ron Paul

I wipe away a tear, When I see “Old Glory Fluttering” from the flag pole, In front of Cimmarron as I park my car. I remember my parents telling me when I was very young, How proud they were to live in such a wonderful country.

I loved to put your leash on And take walks with you But you are gone, can’t do no more I’m not the me I used to be.

I wipe away a tear, When I am at a ball game, and they play, The “Star Spangled Banner” I stand up with everyone else, with my hand over my heart. When I was in the Navy, and they played taps, I stood at attention, while I was facing the flag pole, I felt so proud! I wipe away a tear, When someone sings, “God Bless America” Who was written by Irving Berlin, who came to America, From, Imperial Russia, as a young boy, Who truly understood that living in America, Is truly, a “Blessing” I wipe away a tear, When they show all the American Military Cemeteries, I wipe away many, many, tears, when I think of all the young, Boys and men, who gave away everything for America. Let us not forget the millions of broken hearts, Of families who to this day, still wipe away, many tears. I wipe away a tear, As my parents, so long ago told me when I was very young, Mel, be proud and faithful to America, we are lucky to be Citizens to such a wonderful place, America!

We sat together on a single chair I’d eat dinner and you’d get a treat So much fun, but now no more I’m not the me I used to be. We shared a bed but you got most And you would snore, but I had you beat And on the pillow your head would rest But the bed’s now empty And I’m not the me I used to be We’d watch T.V. on a recliner we’d share I’d pet you til you fell asleep And I’d fall asleep right next to you I’m lost on the chair without you I’m not the me I used to be. Your bark was loud for a small dog Your face and colors so beautiful I call your name, there’s no response Again I try with unreal hopes I know you’re gone, I want you back I’m not the me I used to be. Though bittersweet, I’ll try to heal knowing you are gone I’ll keep you vibrant and alive in my memory No matter where I go, you’ll go with me No wherever your spirit is, I’ll be there too I may never be what I used to be But my love for you will stay strong and true. BEFORE YOU LEAVE SUN CITY GRAND

fo r th e S u m m e r

Before you leave Sun City Grand, whether it be for a few weeks or for several months, there are many things you should do to protect your house and property. Your house should give the impression it is currently occupied, not vacant. C.H.A.P.S.* suggests you take the following precautions: 1. Lock all windows and doors, including your security door(s). And be sure to lock your pool gates. 2. Trim back your front, side, and backyard bushes, shrubs and trees; not just for a well-kept appearance, but to eliminate hiding places for intruders. Nothing says “WE ARE NOT HOME” like a yard filled with over-grown landscaping, weeds and debris. 3. Check to be sure your house number lights and outdoor landscaping lights are working. Replace any burned out bulbs. 4. Remove any ripened citrus from your trees. Fallen or low hanging citrus can attract rodents. 5. Drain water from backyard water features. Treat any remaining water with appropriate chemicals. Cover your water feature with a tarp if it is in a location to collect monsoon rain. Eliminate any standing water, which breeds mosquitoes. 6. Set your irrigation system for the hotter summer season. Make sure your watering system is in good condition. A water leak not only will increase your water bill, but it

Boomers Club is a 400+ member social club open to all Sun City Grand residents. Our goal is to have fun while making new acquaintances. Covid has certainly put a damper on our activities for the past year. However, we are optimistic that with vaccines we will be able to resume activities in the not too distant future. We offer monthly happy hours, breakfasts, luncheons, a few dances with live bands, and a variety of special events like trivia night, chili cook-off, and we have an ongoing book club. GARDEN CLUB

Greetings to all Gardeners in Grand! (Please note the membership SALE below.) The SCG Garden Club Board is pleased to invite you to join the Club Officer Elections and "What's Wrong with my Plant?" Zoom presentation on Thursday, April 15th, 9-11 am. Election of officers will begin the meeting. We hope many of our members can attend! Reminder, Nonmembers are welcome and can also send in a problem plant photo, but only members can vote for officers of the club. Club member Leni Vachon will conduct the election. You'll have a chance to meet each member of the Slate of Officers presented for election, when each will briefly introduce themselves to you! Following Election of Officers, President and Master Gardener Cherie Czaplicki will help answer the "What's wrong with my plant" questions you've submitted. Members have always enjoyed gaining gardening knowledge about their plants. You are invited to submit a few photos to Cherie (email at the end of this note),

including a close-up, a photo of the overall plant, and any other photos you deem applicable along with a description of the problem to help us determine the solution. Photos are due Friday April 9, please be timely, Cherie needs time to study the problems! Election note—Is there a Secretary out there? (Cherie gazes through the telescope). The Garden Club Executive Board of officers is looking long and hard for a secretary to record board meeting minutes, 7 meetings a year. These minutes are very important, they record that the Club is following CAM protocols and are a record of Garden Club meetings, topics and happenings that are presented to CAM. The Secretary Notebook is what keeps the Garden Club an active Club in CAM's records. For these last two meetings of the year (April and May), Garden Club dues are ON SALE now - only $5 pp (usually $10 annually) . Email Karen Rowland (below) for her mailing address to send your membership check. After having the summer off, the Club begins the gardening year again in October, with the last meeting in May. PLEASE NOTE: NONMEMBERS can sign up to be invited to this meeting and are also invited to submit photos of problem plants or gardening situations. Send an email to Club Membership chair Karen Rowland <scgGardenClub@gmail.com> to be included in the Zoom notification. A Zoom email invitation will be sent the day before the meeting to members and the NONMEMBERS who've notified Karen. A Zoom refresher class could be made available to learn the Zoom platform for virtual meetings, also email Karen. NONMEMBERS are most welcome to join our presentations one time per year before joining the Club. Garden Club meetings are usually Power Point presentations helping provide answers to the many gardening questions and inspiration to learn how to garden in SCG here in the Low Sonoran Desert. For further information, email Club President Cherie Czaplicki at <cczaplicki@cox.net> or 623-975-5397.

MANAGING PASSWORDS

I use a little green notebook to keep my passwords. I’m not sure that I need anything else, but my friends tell me I should use a password manager for better security. First, how does this type of program work, and secondly, how expensive are they? Pat from SCG View the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www. grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view.

Dear Pat, To be safe online, it is crucial to use unique, complex passwords for every website you visit. The biggest risk to your security is password re-use. If you use the same passwords over and over, a breach at one website means your email and password can be used by attackers to log into other sites and to seriously compromise your security. That is where a password manager comes into play. A password manager is an app/program that generates, stores and manages passwords. n

n

Password managers can generate passwords of any length with whatever criteria is necessary for a particular site. You determine length, type of character (letter, number, symbol), mixed capitals or not. Password managers then store your passwords in an encrypted database. The

program’s entire password database is accessed with ONE master password – so the master password is the only one you need to remember. n

Password management, which includes syncing passwords across your devices, falls into two categories: browser-based and dedicated.

Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are examples of browserbased password managers. They are a convenient solution if you only browse the internet and if you utilize a unique password for every site. As long as you use the same browser on each of

YOU’LL ALWAYS BE TREATED LIKE FAMILY...

Dedicated password managers can be free, for-pay dedicated versions, family plans, etc. Rather than using the same browser across all devices, you download the password manager program/ app to all your devices. Dedicated managers offer more options: n
