FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
USGA ONSITE VISIT REPORT – SEPTEMBER 8, 2021
IMPROVED AESTHETICS, PLAYABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
“From my perspective, the recent renovation on the South course achieved all of the intended goals to improve the aesthetics of the golf course, facilitate easier and more efficient golf course maintenance, and to improve sustainability through turf reduction, irrigation upgrades and removing a considerable amount of bunker area. I have seen 20 to 30 or more golf course renovations over the past four or five years and I can say only a small percentage have been as successful as this renovation on the South Course at Sun City Grand. Congratulations to all parties involved.”
The above statement is what was said in the latest Onsite Visit Report by our United States Golf Association Agronomist in September of 2021. Staff is very proud of the final project and appreciates everyone (Golf Long Range Planning Committee, Golf Advisory Committee, Finance Advisory Committee, Sun City Grand Board of Directors, and a lot of resident input) that had a part to play in the project.
until they begin to mature and obtain an organic/ thatch layer just beneath the turf to help soften them up. Golfers experienced the same conditions back in 2007 when the greens on Granite Falls North #1 and #18 were changed out to experiment with different varieties of turf. As the weather has
started to heat up staff has started to perform some mechanical practices to help soften them up. They will only continue to improve as they mature. This summer, the Cimarron and Desert Springs courses will have the forward tees constructed like Granite Falls South and the red tee will be added.
The Request for Proposal (RFP) was sent out in early March for the Granite Falls North course to have similar improvements done in the summer of 2023 like Granite Falls South. The goal is to continue this process in 2025 at Desert Springs and 2027 finishing up with Cimarron.
The Granite Falls South renovation has been received very well. The changes included addition of the new tee box, renovation of the orange tee boxes, bunker changes with new liner/sand and a much more desirable putting surface along with some irrigation improvements. With all/any new greens project, they will be firm 10

MINDFULNESS
FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
Our sixth and final pillar of wellness is Mindfulness. Merrium-Webster defines mindfulness as the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis. These terms are often interchanged, although they have different meanings. Mindfulness is a state of being, while meditation is a practice.
T
Allison Adams
Fitness Manager
he psychological benefits of mindfulness are maybe better known. Afterall, for anyone who has practiced meditation, quiet contemplation, controlled or deep-breathing techniques, evidence shows how it helps alleviate stress, worry, and anxiety. Mindfulness practices, when done consistently over
time, can separate our thoughts from our present moment, giving us time to evaluate our thoughts and make decisions on what we allow to linger. Here we’ll take a closer look at mindfulness and its positive relationship with physical health. It’s been long reported how meditation/mindfulness leads to reduced levels of stress, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, and increases well-being. Being more attuned to the present moment is one benefit of mindfulness. Practices such as meditation, Tai Chi and other spiritual techniques eliminate or reduce the fluctuations of the mind that are ingrained in

our systems. What mindful practices teach us is to be able to watch our thoughts and any situation that life puts us in, from a detached point of view. Disciplines such as meditation trains us to witness our own thoughts without judgement so we are able to discern between what is right or wrong for us and take the necessary action. When our emotions are balanced, we are less stressed, less prone to become anxious, worried, or depressed. Mindfulness helps us to become positive so we are more resilient and able to bounce back from any situations with more power and more conviction about our own selfworth and success. Ongoing research also
demonstrates benefits in memory, concentration, and thinking skills. One study from 2015 expresses the highlights of a specific meditation practiced 12 minutes per day to offset memory loss and stress. You can find the link here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/26445019/ Take time for yourself to schedule a few minutes of deep breathing in the morning. We also recommend any of our mindfulness-promoting classes, i.e., yoga and T’ai Chi. Commitment to a mindfulness practice is a tremendous tool we encourage for both mental and physical health and a pillar for overall wellbeing.

ESCAPING THE SUMMER HEAT! The following short story is fictitious, but should serve as a reminder to any of us homeowners lucky enough to escape the summer heat. Max and Martha were about to embark on a month-long vacation to Colorado, as they had done in years past. They went over everything on their checklist. “Let’s bring out that vacation form that we picked up over at the Membership Desk at the Palm Center.” “In addition to that form I hear there is a Vacation Watch Homeowner Checklist on the new and improved website at suncitygrand.com. The form to fill out to request the C.H.A.P.S. folks to inspect our home is also available on the new website.” “Okay, Max, make sure we fill in our departure date and return date.”
“Yes, dear.” “Jack and Joan have once again volunteered to be our key holders.” Having them living next door makes it so convenient. It is so important to enter their cell numbers correctly. My friend Jane who belongs to CHAPS, told me that they will not inspect a home if a local keyholder is not designated on the form.” “Yes, dear.” “Okay, Max, now that we have the form filled out let’s drop it off at the Membership Office in the Palm Center so it can be processed through C.H.A.P.S. We are so fortunate to live in a community that provides a volunteer group like C.H.A.P.S. “There is so much peace of mind knowing that they will be checking on our house.”
“Now enter our new cell phone number.”
“The morning that we leave, Max, let’s make the rounds to be sure all windows are locked and the doors including front and back security doors are locked as well.”
“Yes, dear.”
“Yes, dear.”
“Max, I almost forgot something.” Make sure you write in our address and lot number, so it is very legible. We don’t want the folks from C.H.A.P.S. checking the wrong house.”
“You know, Martha, I have been thinking that we should go to one of the C.H.A.P.S. meetings to learn more about what they do and see if we might be interested in joining their
“Yes, dear.”
group.” I hear they meet the 4th Tuesday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in the Sonoran Plaza.” “Max, finally…I get to say: yes, dear.” Yes, the above story is fictitious, but it comes to life each time one of our residents leaves for the summer months or leaves for vacation. The two main functions of our C.H.A.P.S. volunteer group are outlined below. Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m. in the Cimarron Center, Agua Fria Room. All homeowners are welcome to attend.
VACATION WATCH
When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center. Forms can also be found online at suncitygrand.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: First, the homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks and secondly a keyholder must be identified on
the request form. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
EVENING PATROL
During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.
TO VOLUNTEER
We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/ evenings to volunteer, and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer. Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623546-7432 or the CHAPS office (623) 546-7553 if you may be interested in joining us.

SUN CITY GRAND SOFTBALL RED LEAGUE
CANADA VS. USA TEAM CHALLENGE
By Chuck Cruz The Sun City Grand Red League Canada vs. USA Softball Team Challenge outing finally took place after a two-year hiatus compliments of the Covid 19 Pandemic. The fans were treated to a sunny afternoon as ball players from both teams exhibited their athleticism and softball skills. The opening ceremonies began with the national anthems for both countries and the introduction of the players. Following that, Patty Nelson and her family were invited to join the softball teams at home plate as our game announcer introduced her to the fans and informed them that she was the wife of Don Nelson, a Red League player who died of pancreatic cancer two years ago. He proceeded to explain how in previous Canada vs. USA games, Don, dressed in his kilt, orchestrated, and played the bagpipes at each of the opening game ceremonies. As a tribute to him, while we stood in silence, a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace was played over the loudspeakers. It was now Jim Palzer’s turn at center stage as our announcer briefly informed the audience of the funds Jim has raised in his campaign to donate monies towards the research efforts
26
of finding a cure for cancer which has touched all of us in some way, including our Sun City Grand Softball Club Family. Then it was “GAME ON”! The two teams provided enjoyment for the fans as the players answered the bell by showcasing their respective talents. The infielders handled numerous sharply hit grounders in style, executed double plays as warranted and snagged numerous line drive shots robbing their opponent hitters of would-be base hits. Not to be upstaged, the outfielders were up to the challenge handling fly balls in the bright afternoon sunlight with ease while tracking down and catching well hit blasts into the outfield gaps with their amazing speed. While both teams enjoyed the crowdpleasing long ball during the two games, a home run exhibition took place during the intermission as two players from each of the USA and Canada teams participated. It turned out to be very successful as the fans watched them take turns launching
that yellow ball over our Field of Dreams left to right outfield fence. The USA team had twice as many players, more youth, and maybe a little more speed than did the Canadian team—probably why they tallied a few more runs than the Canadians in the two games. However, both teams were evenly matched in terms of game highlights. Players from both sides delighted in boasting their personal game accomplishments, along with a little good-natured bantering, while enjoying their pizza party with each other, their family members and friends following the games. An event of this magnitude takes a lot of planning, co-ordination, and execution to make it work. We had it all! Thanks to those involved: the planners, the outfield maintenance and infield preparers, those handling the scoreboard, our game announcer, the ball players, the coaches, the umpires – and a special shout out to those who voluntarily sold 50-50 raffle tickets and, of course, the fans who contributed to this cause. Way too many of you to recognize individually, but you did yourselves proud! We are happy to report that this undertaking netted $1,451 for (Mr.) Jim Palzer’s efforts.

WEEDS
Friendly Reminder from Standards
We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Members and guests are welcome. Masks are required. Our speakers will be Marco Lopez and Aaron Lieberman running for Governor, and Scott Podeyn running for Arizona House of Representatives for our new Legislative District 29. We need him in the Legislature! Marco Lopez believes everyone in Arizona has the potential to succeed. That’s what makes Arizona a special place – if you work hard and have a vision, anything is possible. But we have big challenges in Arizona. We need a governor with big ideas and bold vision that can bring people together with new approaches, not the same, old, tired political fights.
Marco’s business and government experience– at the local, state, and federal levels –makes him uniquely qualified to lead Arizona. His deep understanding of economic development, international trade, and border security paired with his ability to bring people together to solve problems is exactly what Arizona needs. Aaron Lieberman came into the state legislature armed with a life-long commitment to service and fearless approach to problem solving. Now he wants to bring that same results-oriented focus and track the record of success to the governor’s office. Aaron will be the governor Arizona needs - the right leader, right now. During his time representing Legislative District 28, Aaron has developed a reputation as a leader more interested in finding common sense solutions than playing political games. He isn’t afraid to question the status quo or have difficult conversations. Scott Podeyn is a longtime Democrat and a decorated disabled veteran. Scott Podeyn is running for a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives. After he is elected, he plans to make school funding equal by updating our public-school funding that dates back to1980 to force private and charter schools to be funded with our tax dollars the same way as the public schools. He has plans to cover the CAP canals with solar panels. This will save around 29 square miles under one foot of water and reduce our carbon footprint. He would like to work with agricultural leaders and farmers to off-set their costs for upgrading their irrigation systems to save water.
HORSESHOES INTEREST GROUP Most/many of you have played horseshoes at picnics, family reunions, etc. With your renting or owning a home in our community, you have the opportunity to play this fun game, whenever you want, for free. The horseshoe pits (5 of them) are always open. You can even play under the lights!! Additionally, there is a horseshoe group/ league that plays every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday each week. Generally, at 8 am. This time is adjusted during the year for warmer/ cooler temps in summer/winter. We also have league play with 5 other retirement communities in late winter through early spring. We will provide horseshoes for you to use as well as assistance on "pitching" horseshoes if you might need/want. We can also assist in helping you order your own horseshoes when you find out how much fun the game really is. Open to all ladies and men. were preceded by comments by our very popular District 8 Congresswoman, Debbie Lesko. A lively Q&A session was held at the end of the presentations. SOUND & LIGHTING
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”
The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-3635040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting) 47

EARTH DAY WILL BE CELEBRATED BY MILLIONS IN THE US, CANADA, AND AROUND THE WORLD ON FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 2022 – MARKING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE VERY FIRST EARTH DAY CELEBRATED IN 1970. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “INVEST IN OUR PLANET”, focusing on the effects of climate change on the planet that we all share and what efforts are being made in the real world to mitigate it. In keeping with the theme, Earth Day 2022 will center on “accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and activate everyone – governments, citizens, and businesses – to do their part” announced the organization. This year, Earth Day 2022 calls on everyone to divest from unsustainable investments; support eco-conscious brands and products; and to use your own skills and voice to fight climate change. There are also several ways to celebrate at home or your backyard using the concepts of “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE”.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
SHOULD I UPGRADE MY WINDOWS SOFTWARE Dear Cappie,
Should I upgrade to Windows 11 or stay with Windows 10 since I finally understand how to use it? What are the pros and cons for upgrading? Marie Dear Marie, Let me begin by saying Windows 11 functions very much as Windows 10 does. The upgrade is more of a cosmetic upgrade and doesn't feel totally different or require a high learning curve to use. n The Taskbar icons are in the
middle and have a simpler look n The Settings dialogs are nicer to view n It has improved multimonitor functionality Some of the interface changes will take some time to get used to, but the learning curve is not as great as Windows 10 was from Windows 8.
Be advised that if your computer is too old or unable to meet the system requirements for Windows 11 (1GHz CPU, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, TMP (Trusted Platform Module) security chip, Secure Boot capability), you may not be able to upgrade to the new system. However, if you purchased your PC within the last six years, TMP chips and Secure Boot capabilities have been standard on most PCs and if your PC was manufactured in the last four years your computer should be able to update. Google “how to check if your
device meets Windows 11 requirements” for step-bystep directions and videos on how to check your system. Or if you are a member of the Computer Club, you can visit the computer club on Tuesday afternoons during their Tech Help sessions. and they can show you how. (The club also offers beginning and intermediate classes on learning the ins and outs of Windows 11.) As far as whether you should upgrade, it is a personal choice-- but eventually you will be forced to upgrade.
View the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www. grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view. Special thanks to Sue Gunderson for the lovely photo of her beautiful cat, Benji. age 10. He is an F3 Bengal, his grandparents were Wild Asian Leopard cats bred with a domestic cat. He is wild and crazy as well as sweet and loving.
On the flip side, if you just aren’t ready, you can safely use Windows 10 until October of 2025 when Microsoft will pull active support for Windows 10-- which means you still will be able to use the software, but you won't get any more security updates or see any new features added to the software. Because of all the internet attacks on computers, such as phishing, ransomware, remote exploits, etc. it is not a good idea to use operating systems that are not updated because you can get your personal data stolen if you get hacked.
