FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
THE CUTTING EDGE OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations Brian Whitlark, Senior consulting agronomist, West Region
Most homeowners who have a lawn cut their grass with a rotary mower that has one or two revolving blades. Typical cutting height for a lawn is around 2-3 inches and you probably have to mow about once per week when the grass is growing. You fill the mower with gas, check the oil every now and then, and maybe even give it a wash occasionally. Some may have pivoted to battery-powered mowers and need to replace the battery every year or so. When it’s all said and done, most home lawn mowers do not require a great deal of maintenance and probably receive even less than they need, but what if you were trying to maintain the grass on a golf course? Extremely sharp, finely tuned mowing equipment is paramount to maintain golf course turf at a high level and mower technology is constantly evolving. Here is a brief glimpse into the mower technology used on golf courses, what’s required to keep them performing well, and how you can help make life a little easier for golf course equipment managers. Golf course mowing equipment is much more 10
Keeping golf course mowers cutting their best requires constant adjustments and repairs performed by highly skilled staff.
complex and expensive than most people think. A walking greens mower will run about $10,000 while a riding greens mower will cost roughly $40,000. A mower for fairways costs about $70,000! You may be surprised to hear that mowers used to cut putting greens are used nearly every day during the growing season and are adjusted every time they are used! The mowers used on greens, tees and fairways don’t use a rotary blade like your home lawnmower, they use spinning reels that can have between seven and 15 individual blades on them. The reels spin at a high rate of speed and cut the grass by shearing it between the reel and a sharp piece of metal called a bedknife. These components must be checked daily to yield the best quality of cut and to avoid damaging the turf. Golf courses will use greens mowers about 1,000 hours per year and the
useful life of a greens mower is only about 4,000 hours, so the turnover is high. A fulltime equipment manager is common at most courses and many employ a second or third mechanic. At every golf course, the people responsible for mower maintenance have their hands full keeping up with everything from daily adjustments to the endless repairs needed over the course of a season. Without their constant efforts, playing conditions and turf health would suffer. Golfers can help the cause by taking a few basic steps to reduce the risk of damage to mowers. Large sand particles splashed onto greens from bunker shots or tracked onto the green by golf shoes damage mowers. Brushing away clumps of sand on the green with your putter or knocking sand off your shoes before walking on the putting surface can make a big difference – just
don’t bang your ankle with the sand wedge, that really hurts. Broken tees on teeing grounds also damage mowers and golfers can do their part by picking up and disposing of their own broken tees and a couple of others that might be laying around. Finally, overfilling divots on tees and fairways damages mowers when they run over the sand and it grinds through the reels. Golfers can help by tapping down divot mix so that it’s level with the surrounding turf and not raised above it. The value of a golf course equipment fleet often exceeds $1 million and these machines are directly responsible for the playing conditions we enjoy. We can all help to extend the life of the mowers and keep them cutting their best by practicing good course etiquette and cleaning up after ourselves and others.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER This month’s article is from the NIH, National Institutes of Health. You can read more at this link: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/four-types-exercise-can-improve-your-health-and-physical-ability
Endurance Exercises for Older Adults wedding, and rake the yard and bag up leaves. Build up to at least 150 minutes of activity a week that makes you breathe hard. Try to be active throughout your day to reach this goal and avoid sitting for long periods of time. Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Endurance activities, often referred to as aerobic, increase your breathing and heart rates. These activities help keep you healthy, improve your fitness, and help you perform the tasks you need to do every day. Endurance exercises improve the health of your heart, lungs, and circulatory system. They also can delay or prevent many diseases that are common in older adults such as diabetes, colon and breast cancers, heart disease, and others. Physical activities that build endurance include: n Brisk walking or jogging n Yard work (mowing, raking) n Dancing n Swimming n Biking n Climbing stairs or hills n Playing tennis or basketball
Safety Tips Do a little light activity, such as easy walking, before and after your endurance activities to warm up and cool down. n Listen to your body: endurance activities should not cause dizziness, chest pain or pressure, or a feeling like heartburn. n Be sure to drink liquids when doing any activity that makes you sweat. If your doctor has told you to limit your fluids, be sure to check before increasing the amount of fluid you drink while exercising. n If you are going to be exercising outdoors, be aware of your surroundings. n Dress in layers so you can add or remove clothes as needed for hot and cold weather. n To prevent injuries, use safety equipment, such as a helmet when bicycling. n
Quick Tip: Test Your Exercise Intensity When you’re being active, try talking: if you’re breathing hard but can still have a conversation easily, it’s moderateintensity activity. If you can only say a few words before you have to take a breath, it’s vigorous-intensity activity.
REGARDING THE CHLORINE SHORTAGE Three of our vendors have assured us that the chlorine production issues are solely with Tri Chlorine, or Trichloroisocyanuric acid, dry. The chlorine used for Sun City Grand pools is Cal Hypo, or calcium hypochlorite. Production of hypochlorite is unhindered; therefore, Sun City Grand does not risk closure due to a chlorine shortage. Increase your endurance or “staying power” to help keep up with your grandchildren during a trip to the park, dance to your favorite songs at a family 14
As an aside, if you are seeking TriChlor inventory for your own pool, do not mix Cal Hypo with any residual TriChlor as this contact can lead to combustion. Grand Lifestyles | June 2021 | suncitygrand.com

Best Blueberry Crisp
Prep Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes Yields:4 Servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes Yield: 6-8
Let’s be honest: grilled chicken may not seem like the most exciting meat out there, but it’s affordable, crowdpleasing and a snap to cook. So why not skip the burgers at your next barbecue and try this super-easy recipe instead? You won’t want to sleep on the sauce, which is a classic BBQ jazzed up with honey and lime. It's so flavorful, the chicken really doesn't need a marinade—which means you get to eat it way sooner.
This best blueberry crisp is easy to make and tastes SO good. The crumble topping is perfectly crunchy and the filling is pure, tangy blueberry!
INGREDIENTS n n n n n n n n

WALKING
SHARE THE ROAD
Summer is here, which means those who are brave enough to withstand the Arizona heat will venture outside. Whether you’re driving, bicycling, running, or walking, remember, our roads and crosswalks are made to be shared using safety tips and following the law. We stand behind the City of Surprise in their initiative to educate and make residents aware of the laws set forth by the Arizona Legislature.
Here’s what you need to know:
SUN CITY GRAND SPEED LIMITS Sunrise Blvd, Clearview Blvd, Goldwater Ridge, Mountain View Blvd: 35 mph Residential Areas: 25 mph
VEHICLES
Four-Way Stops/Crosswalks Right of Way 1. Except as provided in section 28-793, subsection B, if traffic control signals are not in place or are not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the rightof-way, slowing down or stopping if need be in order to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is on the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian 16
is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger. A pedestrian shall not suddenly leave any curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield. 2. If a vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of another vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.
WALKERS, RUNNERS, JOGGERS Walkers and runners, keep your eyes and ears open and move over to allow cyclists to pass safely. If wearing headphones, please have it lowered to a volume that you can hear others when approaching. Runners should signal walkers similar to cyclists when passing.
open for walkers, runners, and vehicles. In addition, cyclists should alert when passing walkers and runners by yelling, “passing on your left (or right)!” Please remember to be cautious of pedestrians and move out of the way to give pedestrians the right of way. Although it is not a law, emergency officials urge all bicyclists to wear a helmet. n Follow all traffic signs and rules of the road. n If you're riding at night, use a front & rear light. n Use hand signals when turning. n Avoid busy streets when possible. n
GOLF CARTS
Operate as vehicles; same laws apply
BICYCLISTS
In addition, golf carts are to be operated in public streets by those who have a valid driver’s license. Children, teens, and adults without a valid license are not allowed to operate a golf cart in public streets.
Arizona does not have a statute that specifically prohibits the operation of a bicycle upon a sidewalk (Ariz. Rev. Stat. Article 28-904;28-101). Therefore, cyclists should keep their eyes and ears
If you notice any violators of the safety laws permitted by the Arizona State Legislature, which are supported by the City of Surprise and Sun City Grand, please contact the City of Surprise Police Department at 623.222.4000, or 911 for an emergency.

Volunteers can be found in the most unlikely of places!
FROM THE GRAND CENTRAL RAILROAD CLUB
Contributed by: Robert Grimes
As we are recovering from COVID-19, we find ourselves doing things we might not normally do. That can be said about the Grand Central Railroad. For the better part of a year, the Train Park was closed to both members and visitors. When we started the process of reopening in the middle of the pandemic, there had to be many restrictions and changes to how the GCRR operated. Aside from bringing the trains back to normal operations, there was the challenge of bringing the layout back to the appearance that all have come to expect. Enter an unexpected volunteer. I have lived in SCG for ten years and
have known my close neighbors for most of that time. What I did not know was that my next door neighbor was a talented painter. One day in late January my wife and I walked by their house and stopped to talk. One of the first things that Monica said to me was to mention her concern about the condition of the buildings around the Train Park. She asked if she could help by painting some of the faded buildings. The rest is history. She, and as it turns out, her husband have been painting nonstop ever sense. So far, they have created five “vignettes” that showcase the various areas of the layout. To see more of what Jon and Monica have been up to, please stop by the Train
Park during our posted operating hours. For more information, please visit our website at: GrandCentralRailroad. info or contact Chairman@ GrandCentralRailroad.info. Thanks to Dan Jacob for taking the pictures of the displays around the Train Park.

WHAT IS THE TECH TOOLBOX I’m sure it is no surprise to most of you that a lot of activity goes on behind the scenes here in Grand to help make our lives run smooth and easy. Even though we won’t be converting to our new technology system until fall, plans are already underway to make sure that everyone is trained on the things they will need to know prior to, and shortly after, the changeover. We are going to be changing over to a new member numbering system, and that will require all new smart CAM cards. That will be the only change some of you will experience. If you don’t use the website, or a club website, or make any kind of online reservations, — mostly those who don’t participate in any technology now, — you will get your new card and be done. Even though it can do more, doesn’t mean you have to do more.
For those who are more tech savvy, we will have a Toolbox of training options for you and will offer some of the newer ID tech as desired. Things like fobs, wrist bands, phone access, etc. are being evaluated now. We are in the process of developing what that training will look like right now, but are planning for a variety of options for the many learning styles of our members. Some of the things being considered include: • An event launch
Plan a day escape
Miller Massage at Cimarron a decadent body treatment including detoxing mud masque, body polish and west valley’s only Vichy shower
melt with our hot stone and warmed body cream massage
complete with a custom luxury facial
3 hour experience only $295
• Overview classes on zoom, live and video • “Cheat sheets” you can print to help with specifics of various tasks • Short videos that address one thing – calendars, your member page, reservations, the app, etc. • A “help desk” where you can go to get specific help on an issue you are having. Those will either be via zoom, phone or even possibly live, depending on COVID. We envision these services being available before launch and for a period of time afterwards – videos and
cheat sheets will be available at all times. Our goal is to make sure everyone knows everything they need to make their technology life here extraordinary. The tech will be there, the question is – will you? Training is the way to reduce frustration and make things smooth. We have 35 eager volunteers ready to help the tech team launch this new environment for all of us. We are excited and hope you are getting the “tech bug” too. Submitted by the Technology Committee YOU’LL ALWAYS BE TREATED LIKE FAMILY... AND WE LIKE OUR FAMILY!

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
Staying Safe in the Heat As anyone reading this from their air-conditioned home in the Arizona desert knows, June is often one the hottest months of the year here. Who remembers June 26, 1990, the day the mercury blew up to 122°? (By the way, did you know that 6 + 26 + 90 equals 122!)
Although, we often go from one air-conditioned space to another, the heat can be very dangerous, especially to older adults and anyone who may have a chronic medical condition. This is due to the effects of age-related physical changes and even effects of taking some medications, such as diuretics, for example. At The Colonnade, residents have access to both an indoor and an outdoor pool, as well as two different indoor fitness gyms, including our yoga studio. And, the Resident Services team offers daily fitness classes Monday through Friday held indoors to keep people active in a safe manner, according to Jeanice Hamilton, L.P.N., director of Resident Services. Residents can also watch fitness videos Monday through Saturday on an internal video channel. “I also write articles throughout the summer months to remind people about staying hydrated and the pitfalls of dehydration and then heat stroke, heat exhaustion and what you can do to avoid this,” Jeanice said. “Safety tips include: wear a heat, wear sun screen, use lip balm, for example. We try to be proactive to keep our residents safe.” 20

CURRENT EVENTS ROUNDTABLE
PHIL AXELROD Meets 14 times on Tue 6/1–8/31 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM Fee $25.00 Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.
THE SIXTIES: THE WRECKING CREW

They are responsible for thousands of recordings and several hundred Top 40 hits in the 1960’s and 1970’s. We’ll explore the beginnings of the unit, associated record producers, and many of the session musicians who helped to create the soundtrack for a generation. Our journey will include tracks that the Wrecking Crew worked on for numerous artists including The Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Mamas & Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Ronettes, The Righteous Brothers, Sinatra and many others.

Is there anyone in the group you serve who, in any way, is looking after another person who no longer can care for themselves as they use to? Are your people connected with anyone who has a disability or is navigating a serious illness? If so, your people are already navigating the complexities of Long Term Care. Grasping what Long Term Care is, what resources and services are out there and which ones are actually needed, and how you pay for all of it can be overwhelming. Our workshop has been designed specifically to help demystify the process and help people understand their options. If you would like to help your members be as equipped as possible to create the best system of resources for their unique life needs, then let’s connect. FSL is here to serve the servants of our society.

His television show became the most successful and longest-running variety show in U.S broadcast history. We will journey with Ed from his early days as a sports and entertainment reporter to his becoming the quintessential star maker of the 50s (Elvis) and the 60s (The Beatles). The Ed Sullivan Show included every type of entertainer from opera singers to comedians to dramatic actors. Sunday nights were incomplete without watching The Ed Sullivan Show. Television critic, David Hinckley, has been quoted as saying “The Ed Sullivan Show was by any means the last great TV show”.

The class will explain what the difference is between a Medigap policy (Supplement) and a Part C (HMO, Medicare Advantage). The class will define what circumstances can help determine why you may pick one type of plan over another as well as one insurance company over another. Everyone's scenario is different whether they are currently in Medicare or entering into Medicare for the first time.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF BASEBALL
KEN SORENSEN Meets 1 time on Fri 6/25/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $10.00 Did the game really begin with Abner Doubleday? How did this game become the attraction of the world? Who was Cy Young or Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig? What was the Black Sox Scandal? How did Jackie Robinson crash the color barrier and how did teams (his and others) respond? “Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.” The catch in the 1954 World Series changed what was possible. The Deacon and the difference that he made in the 1960 World Series. The stories go on and on.
GINGERTALKS: BOB DYLAN UNTANGLED
GINGER SWARTZ Meets 1 time on Tue 6/29/2021 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Fee $10.00 For those of us who grew up in the 60s, Bob Dylan is a prophet to many. To others, he’s an aggravation to be ignored as music and often seen to be invisible as a poet. If you’re a Dylan fan, maybe you’ve wondered what all those millions of words really mean? Dylan himself said “These songs of mine, they’re like mystery stories, the kind that Shakespeare saw when he was growing up.” The Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature to Dylan in part because he has been “the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.” This class will focus on Dylan as literature, from the free-form poetry of his book, Tarantula, and his memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, to his ballads and poetry. We’ll talk about his influences, from T.S. Elliot to John Steinbeck and Jack Kerouac, to the folk singer, Woody Guthrie. We’ll discover what literary and rock and roll critics say about selections from the more than 600 songs he wrote, ranging from Hey Mr. Tambourine Man (1965) to his 2020 release, Crossing the Rubicon.
YOU CARE FOR OTHERS, BUT WHO IS CARING FOR YOU?
NYDIA MONTIJO Meets 1 time on Wed 6/30/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 Are you a parent? Do you have parents that you do anything for? Do you in any way assist anyone in your house who has a disability or an ongoing medical condition? If so, you are a caregiver. You are amazing, and we appreciate all of the sacrifices you make on a daily basis- your love for others is a vital part of keeping our society going. But, we are
worried about you. We are noticing an escalating trend of caregivers burning out, getting injured, manifesting their own negative health conditions and some are even dying. We have crafted this workshop specifically to give back to you. We go over the physical and emotional toll of being a caregiver and help identify factors of self-neglect. We provide practical solutions for eliminating fatigue and avoiding it in the future. We review self-care techniques and logistical tips to make any needed change sustainable, reasonable, and doable. Allow us to provide some relief, soothe some possible guilt, and equip you to love in a sustainable way.
SELF-PUBLISHING YOUR MANUSCRIPT
GALE LEACH Meets 1 time on Thur 7/8/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $10.00 This class will introduce you to the options available for self-publishing today. The publishing industry has changed radically over the past few years. It's easier than ever to go from a wordprocessed manuscript to a printed novel or digital eBook (or both), but the number of ways to do this have increased as well. This class will share the best and easiest methods for both print and eBook creation, and you will watch as an actual manuscript is uploaded, formatted, and made available to readers. By the end of the class, you should be able to make a qualified decision regarding the direction your book will take. Please note: There is no right or wrong choice—only the best decision for you as an author.
obesity increased from 30.5% to 42.4%, and the prevalence of severe obesity increased from 4.7% to 9.2%. Obesity is a gateway for a lot of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, hormonal imbalance, and many cancers. Many different ways of dieting have emerged to try to curb down obesity. Until there is a basic understanding of how the human body ends up packing the fats, obesity rates will keep rising.
GINGERTALKS: THE MANHATTAN PROJECT REVISITED
GINGER SWARTZ Meets 1 time on Tue 7/13/2021 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Fee $10.00 The media and the public have ranked the dropping of the atomic bomb and the end of the Second World War as the top news stories of the twentieth century. This 90-minute presentation summarizes the history and personalities of the U.S. World War II research effort into developing a working atomic bomb. If you took this class before, you might want to check out this revised version. This time around, in addition to tracing the history, we’ll look at a two short videos. One about the top-secret nature of the project’s research labs and a second that provides a concise documentary-style summary of the project. continuted on next page
ARE YOU DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY?
NYDIA MONTIJO Meets 1 time on Fri 7/9/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 Arizona has the second-highest growth rate for Alzheimer’s- which is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and just one of the dementias you can be diagnosed with. Is dementia a normal part of aging? Do only older adults get it? Is it more than just a memory problem? If you are diagnosed, what kind of quality of life can you expect? Our workshop will cover these questions and more, including what dementia actually is, what the warning signs are, and how to create an environment that is friendly to those who have been diagnosed. The question isn’t about whether or not you will run into someone with dementia, but when. If you want to be someone who can respond with respect for what they are going through and act in a way that is safe for both you and them, then this presentation is a must.

GRAND LEARNING AVOID FRAUD, SCAMS & ABUSE NYDIA MONTIJO Meets 1 time on Wed 7/14/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 We all know they are out there: people who are hunting other, vulnerable individuals to take advantage of them. How do you safeguard yourself, your money, and those you love? Arm yourself with insider knowledge. Whether you are an older adult or you have older adults in your life that you want to protect, this is a workshop that will ensure you don’t fall prey to the common traps set out in both the digital and interpersonal world. We will teach you what is out there, how to easily identify them, why they work, and how to avoid them. We will also give you resources for further education and protective services.
WHY DISCONTINUATION OF DIABETES MEDICATION IS POSSIBLE DR. EDELITA JAMIS Meets 1 time on Mon 7/26/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 This class will bust common myths about type 2 diabetes mellitus, such as “you can never get off insulin” or “once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you have diabetes forever”. This disease has affected so many Americans who are now relying on multiple medications, including insulin.
Yet, the complications of this chronic condition long-term are not slowing down at all. The reason is that there has always been a disconnect in how we understand diabetes. This class will show you how people with diabetes are now gaining control of their disease, leading to reduction or even discontinuation of medications, including insulin.
HOME AUTOMATION BASICS
TONY SPATA Meets 1 time on Wed 7/28/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 This presentation provides foundational information, in a mostly non-technical format, on how to integrate automated lighting, door locks, temperature control, garage door monitoring, smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and other devices in a unified manner to achieve a “Smart” home. It also goes into “what they don’t tell you” in those slick ads that imply all you need to do is talk into your TV’s remote control (or similar device) and things magically happen.
CREATING AND WRITING YOUR OWN BLOG
CHRIS TAYLOR Meets 2 times on Thur 7/29–8/5/2021 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Fee $15.00 Blogging is a highly personal form of writing that includes everything from personal stories to family histories and hobby promotion to political
commentary. Do you want to join the 31 million Americans who are active bloggers but didn’t know how to begin? This class is designed to help you become a blogger. It will offer information on blogging and its many categories. Then you will learn the steps necessary to develop your own blog which begins with creating your website. The class will end with students writing their own blog posts.
LED LIGHTING AND ELECTRONIC LIGHTING CONTROLS TONY SPATA Meets 1 time on Wed 8/11/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 Have you gone to Home Depot or Lowe's lately to buy a "60 Watt light bulb"? How about Best Buy that has multiple shelves devoted to not only lights that can change their color, but also controls for them that are either wireless or voice activated? Welcome to lighting and their controls in the 21st Century! LED's have rendered incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps obsolete. Electronic lighting controls are now capable of not only Offand-On functions, but are fully automated for either pre-scheduled, voice or wireless operation. This class will present an in-depth examination of how to select appropriate LED lights, and the controls required to achieve their maximum benefit. It's recommended (but not required) that you know the material in the Home Automation for Beginners Class.

Then and Now
FROM THE PAPER ARTS CLUB
Contributed by: Jane Connors
The Paper Arts and Memories (PAM) Card Boutique has long been a popular feature at Grand Markets, Fall and Springs Festivals, and in front of the Hopi & Pima rooms, where the club meets every Monday. The Boutique sells lovely, fun, and creative cards handmade by members. But cards aren’t the only thing our members make, some also make beautiful, intriguing, and eye-catching mixed media pieces, which use different materials.
For Mary’s 70th birthday celebration, the group got together and made Then and Now books. Each woman brought 10 pictures of herself—five current and five from the past. They then exchanged pictures so that each woman had pictures of each of the other women to put in her book. As Mary said: “This special crafting session was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday and was the best gift the girls could have given me. Now we all have a beautiful keepsake from that day, and these books remind us of all the fun we have had over the years and still continue to have.”
One of those projects, the Then and Now book, shown here, was made by long-time member Mary McGillis. About 15 years ago, Mary and several other club members began getting together once a month at someone’s home to do an art project of the hostess's choosing. They named their group WOW (which stands for Wonderful Old Women or Wacky Old Women or Wild Old Women, or even Witchy Old Women...depending on the mood and the day).
The women of WOW aren’t the only PAM members who make art with mixed media. The other pictures here represent just some of the fun and amazing work our members produce. Members often offer classes where they teach other club members how to make mixed media projects. Working with paper in many different ways is what makes Paper Arts such a fun club to belong to. Come check us out…Mondays from 7:30 to 2:00 in the Hopi & Pima rooms.

FROM THE GRAND TENNIS CLUB
Learning about the
AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) Contributed by: Sally Orr
Recently the Sun City Grand Tennis Club hosted an AED (automated electronic defibrillator) class presented by Mike Payne, captain with the Surprise fire department. Some
30
20 members gathered with the goal of becoming comfortable with the use of the AED should one of our Members or Residents of Sun City Grand have an episode on the tennis courts. The AED is located in the sport
building near the tennis courts, lawn bowling and bocce ball areas. This was a community service through our Surprise Fire Department and Mr. Payne did an excellent job.

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call (CAM) 623-546-7468 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at suncitygrand.com – volunteer central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol
DUTIES OF C.H.A.P.S.* VOLUNTEERS Article submitted by: Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member
Before you read on to learn of the functions of C.H.A.P.S. I need to take a moment to emphasize the importance of closing our garage doors. We will soon be nearing that time when we are dealing with consistent days of 100+ temps (ugh, and double ugh). Common sense tells us when the inside garage temps are 99 and the outside temp is 110 it is of no value to open the garage door to “let the heat out”. It is also a safety hazard to open the garage door approximately 18 inches “to let the heat out” as that is an open invitation for someone or a critter to crawl under. At one time or another we have all read the section in the CC&R’s that clearly states garage doors shall remain closed at all times unless the homeowner is occupying the garage or working nearby (or verbiage in the CC&R’s that means the same thing). On behalf of our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteer group I would like to take this
opportunity to recognize Jerry and Pam Wojtas. Jerry and Pam have faithfully served as C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers for twenty years. Thank you many times over, Jerry and Pam!
The duties of CHAPS volunteers appear below. VACATION WATCH
When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at suncitygrand.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Three criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form; and (3) homes for sale and those using paid house-sitting services will NOT be accepted. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/ or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.
TO VOLUNTEER
We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. You will also be provided a vehicle by CAM to drive during your duty time. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/evenings to volunteer and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer.

Check us out at www.scgboomers.com That is where you can sign up for membership and see new events as our members schedule them. Our goal is to have fun while making new acquaintances during various activities. Covid certainly put a damper on our activities in 2020, but we are slowly beginning to recover. Most recently, we held a Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour at the Pavilion, a Men’s Breakfast, and a June Happy Hour. We are optimistic that more activities will be added in the near future. We plan to offer monthly happy hours, breakfasts, luncheons, a few dances with live bands, and a variety of special events like trivia night, chili cook-off, and we have an ongoing book club.

Duplicate games are now open on Sundays and are subject to the same mandates as social games. Please visit the bridge club website at www.scgbridgeclub.com for additional information and updates.

GARDEN CLUB
A summer salute to Garden Club members and others as well! June finds Club members on vacation (no meetings in summer). We’ll be “vacationing” until the next Garden Club meeting on Thursday, October 21, 8:30-11 am in the Gila Room at Cimarron Center; we hope to be meeting in person by Fall! Club dues remain at $10/year pp and are payable at the first meetings of the garden club year (even January, hoping our Canadian friends will again be able to join us). Garden Club meetings are the third Thursday of the months of October, November, NO MEETING in December. Then we begin our “New Year” 2022 —really(?) on January 20, Feb, March, April, and May. We hope to be planning a field trip in the Spring! There has been an almost 2-year gap in Garden Club in-person meetings, so we ask volunteers to again bring goodies to share at our brunch table, “plants & things” for and helping at the plant giveaway table. We’ll appreciate help with starting our coffee pots before the meetings, they’ll be filled with water, just plug in (!). Did we mention a greeter would help welcome previous members and new members, as well as visitors who want to “check us out” for only ($1)? We will miss our friend Gloria Mandracchia and her big smiles and hugs very much at the plant table. Barbara and Hazel will help us remember Gloria’s joy at describing all the “lovelies” you’ve brought for that table. Board members Ellie, Cherie, Karen and Ruth look forward to seeing you once again at Garden Club in-person meetings in the Fall! Would you also send Cherie topics that you would like to talk about in these future meetings—thank you!

CLUB & INTEREST GROUP INFORMATION MAH JONGG
The Sun City Grand Mah Jongg Club is again open for play! We are enjoying playing with the new 2021 card, which became effective on April 1, 2021. There are lots of changes on the new card, but also some old favorite hands. We play according to National Mah Jongg League rules, with four people to a table. We generally play in the Hopi Room at the Chaparral Center. We are not allowing guests at this time, but you can join the club and come to play with us, assuming you know how to play. See our Reopen Plan and Rules on our website, www.scgmahjongg.net which also includes a tab for a membership application. Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, calculation, memory, and involves a degree of luck. It is an excellent game to keep your brain lively. Our club offers lessons each year, and we have a plan in place to give lessons this Fall. Lessons are a good way to learn the game in a more relaxed setting. If you would like to be on the list for lessons, please email us at scgmahjonggclub19@ cox.net. One of the nice things about playing with us is that you can arrive or leave at any time during play after you have played a round (4 games) at a table. After you are East, you go to the front of the room and wait for the next available table. It’s a great way to meet other members and make new mah jongg friends. You do not need to bring a mah jongg set, only your current 2021 card. If you do not have a 2021 card, you can order one at the National League website, which is: www.nationalmahjonggleague.org. We also hold tournaments each year, and now that things are opening up, we will schedule a tournament later this year. Tournaments are another great way of improving mah jongg skills and making new friends. We play in the Hopi Room on Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 4 p.m., and on Wednesdays from 5:45 to 9:30 p.m. Check us out – Bring your current 2021 mah jongg card, $5.00 in change, your Cam card and your covid vaccine card,. GRAND PHOTOS
This summer Grand Photos members will be busy using their cameras to record the many facets of the summer of 2021. Here in Arizona and throughout the country we’ll be using all types of cameras (including our Smartphones) to record our travels, gatherings with friends and family and the sights of our everyday lives. Many of us will enjoy the time spent using post-processing software & apps to creatively enhance our images and we will continue to use the new “virtual” tools we’ve discovered during the pandemic to share the results with our Grand Photos friends. Our Studio remains open during the summer months for photo processing, printing, matting, SIG’s activities, etc. Opportunities for placement of photos on Studio gallery walls will continue during this time. We’ll also hold monthly “virtual” photo shoots” where members are challenged to take photos following a theme and then enjoy the pleasure of safely socializing and sharing their photographic discoveries. Junes’ theme will be “Emotive Story” and “Minimalism”; so grab your smartphone (or any camera of your choice) and capture a scene of emotion (perhaps a birthday party or a very hot summer day). Then start to think “less is more” (like architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe) as you frame your view of minimalism. Have fun! There will be occasional in-person photo shoots as well. Education classes will resume in October. We had such a great response to our weekly photo challenges last summer, we decided we would offer them again. We will be offering a weekly photo challenge from now until the end of September with something different to try each week. Whether you show it off on Facebook or just enjoy it yourself, we hope it keeps you shooting and enjoying photography during our summer hiatus. 1st Weekly Challenge - Art of Refraction Light is refracted as it passes through the water, and the objects behind the water vessels look deformed. This phenomenon may be used in creative images photography. Enjoy! Join Us! Becoming a member is easy. Check us out at https://grandphotos.org/ Membership. It’s simple to register and pay online and find more details about these and any other programs. Best wishes to all for a safe, enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing you either virtually during the summer, or when you return. “Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.” –Imogen Cunningham

From operating trains, painting buildings, decorating and landscaping, track maintenance, electrical service and repair, to public relations and more…. there is literally something for everyone. Our primary function is operating and maintaining the Model Railroad Park for the enjoyment of our members, residents and visitors, young and old alike. The Railroad Park is located near the tennis courts behind the Chaparral Center. Trains run on a regular schedule as posted at the Railroad Park and on our website (GrandCentralRailroad.info). GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP Spring has arrived and now we wait for our first 100-degree day. We held our first in person meeting on April 17th. We had over 100 folks in attendance. Our program was a Diversity Panel to discuss GOP Challenges. Our speakers were well received. They represented Latino Republicans, Native American Republicans, log Cabin Republicans, African American Republicans and College Republicans. A lively and interesting discussion was presented and we all came away with a better understanding of current issues and opportunities. Each of our meetings are informative as well as entertaining. We meet on the third Saturday of each month unless scheduling issues intervene, so refer frequently to our website for the latest information. You can go to our website, https//scggop.weebly.com in order to get information regarding our June meeting. Also posted will be information on our scheduled summer activities. In addition, included in our web site is important information regarding special events, current group information, our current Board contact information as well as current information affecting Sun City Grand and Surprise. As Republicans we are committed to promoting the principles, objectives, and ideals of the Republican Party on the local, State and Federal level. We support various Veteran’s and Community Organizations through donations and participation in these groups. You can contact any of our Board Members at our website. Our President, Sally Cotton can be reached at 623-214-3637. So, if you have any questions about us or our goals, please feel free to contact us for additional information. TABLE TENNIS CLUB
It is scorching hot out there; hence we offer a special hot summer membership of $5.00 for 4 months in June, July, August, and September. Active residents can continue their lifestyles without enduring the summer heat. This is especially great for tennis and pickle ball players because they can continue to maintain their coordination of eyes, hands, and feet; and to practice their concentration and reflex without the scorching heat. An example of these is as shown in the video of 2020 International Table Tennis Federation’s World Cup Highlights, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s426FUF725Y. We play in an air conditioned environment; in addition, we also play on a wooden floor, which is easier on our ankles, knees, hips, and backs. We meet in the Gila Room of the Cimarron Center every Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday. Please visit www.suncitygrand.com/tabletennis for details.

WEEDS
Friendly Reminder From Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
Tips on Taking a Photo Sometimes I like to take photos with my iPhone camera when I see something that spontaniously interests me. The problem is, by the time I open my phone, type in the password or use face recognition, find the Camera App, click on the icon, find the Photo or Portrait Option, make the correct exposure adjustment, add a filter, change the depth setting, etc, I pretty much missed the shot I wanted. Any suggestions on how to simplify the process? Don from SCG Dear Don, There are several ways to expedite taking quick shots with your iPhone and even more options to utilize the creative controls once you have set the appropriate settings and filters for the scene. Whether shooting with a single-lens reflex camera or with a tablet or cellular phone, prepare early to be ready for those “spontaneous” pictures. Assess the lighting and the most likely type of picture you will take. Will you need a flash? Will you need a fast shutter speed? Program those settings early, not at the instant you want the picture. To prepare for spontaneous pictures with an iPhone, assuming you have updated to the latest iOS Software Update, go to Settings>Camera> and scroll down the screen to Preserve Settings, where three options are available: n Camera Mode allows you to preserve the last mode you used, such as Portrait or Video, rather than automatically having the app reset to Photo each time you open the Camera. Do you spontaneously shoot more video or portraits than basic photos? If so, having the camera start with that setting will save time. Remember, however, that if you do change the camera mode … then that setting will be the one that opens. 40
Creative Controls preserves the last used filter, aspect ratio, light, depth of field setting, etc. rather than have the app automatically reset to standard settings. Again, consider how many of these settings you want to remain the same, and which you prefer to reset for each photo. n Live Photo is automatically on unless you turn it off here in Settings. (A side note is that live photos, with their few seconds of movement, are much larger files than stationary images, and take more storage space.) As for opening your Camera quickly, there are several ways to speed up taking a shot: n Ask Siri to open your Camera app by saying: “Hey Siri, open Camera app.” n If you do not already have your Camera app on the Dock at the bottom of the screen, tap and hold the Camera icon until all the icons begin to wriggle, then slide the Camera icon onto your Dock. This makes it easier to find the Camera icon, regardless of which screen you might be on, so you can take a photo more quickly. n You can get quickly to the iPhone’s Camera by hard pressing the Camera

app icon on the Lock screen. (This allows quick access to the camera only--not to your stored pictures. You can actually pick up anyone’s iPhone to take a quick photo … but you will not be allowed into that phone.) n If in auto-lock, tap the screen to wake your iPhone 10 or higher, and swipe your finger across the screen from right to left to automatically open the Camera app. n If you already unlocked your phone, tap and hold the Camera icon on the Home screen, then tap the tool you need from the interactive menu. These are the options: ❍ Take Selfie ❍ Record Video ❍ Take Portrait ❍ Take Portrait Selfie n You can easily open the Camera (in the Control Center) from within any other app by doing one of the following (depending on which iPhone you have): on older iPhones, flick up on your display to access the Control

Center, or swipe down from the top right of the display on an iPhone X or later, (or on other FaceID devices), and then tap the Camera icon in the Control Center. n If you have updated to iOS 14, you can press the volume up button while in the Camera app to take Burst photos. Search regularly online for “taking digital pictures spontaneously” to get other hints for capturing the perfect picture quickly. New apps to improve your pictures are being developed constantly.

HELLO, TO MY FRIENDS IN SUN CITY GRAND! Welcome to June. I hope you are enjoying our long days of sunshine and beautiful sunsets! In this month’s message, I wanted to share with you some new and returning services the City has to offer, along with some helpful safety services provided by our Fire-Medical Team and Surprise Police Department.
NEED A PASSPORT? Summer is almost upon us, and if you are planning a summer trip, the City of Surprise can help you apply for a passport. Passport Services are back at Surprise City Hall after being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City’s friendly and helpful staff can help with applications for first-time passport books, passport cards and help review paperwork for passport renewals. Passport services are by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you must have your passport photo when you arrive as the City of Surprise does not offer passport photos. You can schedule an appointment online at surpriseaz.gov/passport or by calling the City Clerk’s office at 623.222.1200.
MILITARY SERVICES I am so thrilled to share with you another important service we just welcomed to Surprise. The new West Valley Military and Veteran Success Center, located at 12425 W. Bell Road in the Surprise Resource Center, provides veterans, service members, and their families a new place to access resources, support, and assistance in the West Valley. This center was made possible by a partnership with Arizona Coalition for Military Families, Arizona

The Surprise Fire-Medical Department provides a Lock Box Program that allows first responders to have quick and safe access to your home in the event of an emergency. By placing a lockbox on the exterior of your home, the fire department can use a unique key to open the lockbox and access your house key. Having a lockbox can add precious lifesaving minutes during an emergency and also saves on property damage. To find out more about this program, please visit surpriseaz.gov/fire or call 623.222.5000. Department of Veteran’s Services, Northern Arizona University, Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation, and Rio Salado Community College. If you or anyone you know could benefit from these resources, please reach out by calling 623.222.1658 or visit surpriseaz. gov/veterans. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to me by calling 623.222.1322 or by email at aly.cline@surpriseaz.gov.
FIRE-MEDICAL AND POLICE I am so proud of the many programs the City offers to help our residents stay safe. Here are a few that are offered by Surprise Fire-Medical and the Surprise Police Department!
In addition, if you stop by our Surprise Fire Medical Administration office, located at 14250 W. Statler Plaza, Suite 101, you can pick up a Vial of Life. The Vial of Life contains a medical emergency information form that should be filled out, put back in the vial, and stored in your refrigerator for safekeeping. The vial also comes with a sticker that can be placed on your refrigerator to alert first responders that you have this information available. The Vial of Life program is designed to provide important medical and emergency information to first responders when you cannot. While visiting fire administration offices, you can also pick up a Pet Finder window

sticker that informs first responders about the pets in your home!
These are just a few of the many services that our City offers, but I hope that you find them helpful. Additional information on these services and many others can always be found on the City of Surprise website at surpriseaz.gov. If I can answer any questions for you, please feel free to reach out anytime. The best way to reach me is by calling 623.222.1322 or by email at aly.cline@ surpriseaz.gov. I also hope to see you at my next Meet and Greet on June 28 at 6 p.m. at Sun City Grand Café. I will also be hosting a virtual Meet and Greet via WebEx on June 9 at 10 a.m. Please visit my webpage at d2.surpriseaz.gov for the meeting link. I wish you all an excellent June!
teens. The Surprise Police Department also offers the We Care Program, an automated system designed to call a senior or homebound person once a day to check on their welfare. If the daily call is not answered, an automatic alert is sent, and personnel from Surprise Police or Citizens Patrol will be sent to the home to check on the individual. If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, you can submit an online application at surpriseaz.gov/ wecare, and the Surprise Citizen Patrol will contact you to schedule a required home visit and interview.
COLLECTION OF UNUSED MEDICATIONS I often receive questions regarding how residents can safely dispose of unused prescription medications. The Surprise Police Department has a Prescription Drug collection bin located in their lobby, 14250 W. Statler Plaza, Suite 103. Anyone can dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired prescription drugs in the prescription collection bin – and it’s accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The purpose of this program is to reduce the likelihood of these medications falling into the hands of children and
