FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
RENOVATION PLANS
FOR THE GRANITE FALLS SOUTH GOLF COURSE
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
Staff is really excited about the upcoming renovations for the Granite Falls South golf course starting May 17th and last through the summer. This is the largest project the golf courses have taken on. All of the drawings and plans were done in conjunction with our Golf Course Architect, Patrick Burton. This project has been in review for many years with staff working alongside the Golf Advisory Committee as well as Special Sub Committee for this project. Thank you to all the committee members for your help. The projects can be viewed with this link https:// www.suncitygrand.com/Home/ ShowDocument?id=7557 and will show the plans that will be taking place.
n
NEW GREENS • The greens will be stripped of the PD102 and replaced with MiniVerde • Many greens will have some minor contour changes to allow for more pin locations • #1 and #15 green will be enlarged • The new greens will not be overseeded (as recommended by the USGA and architect)
WEEDS
• The first 1-2 years, the greens will be firm as they need to mature n
n
FAIRWAY BUNKERS • Some fairway bunkers will be eliminated and turned into desert (similar to what has been done the past few years)
n
NEW TEES • There will be a new set of tees added between the current orange and red tees • Most orange tees will be improved
Friendly Reminder From Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.
10
GREENSIDE BUNKERS • Some bunkers will be removed while some are made smaller • Some will receive drainage • All greenside bunkers will receive a PVC liner • New sand will be added to the greenside bunkers
n
NEW IRRIGATION • A new pump station will be installed • All of the heads in the roughs will be replaced with new swing-joints and heads and leveled to the surface
All of these project’s total over $1.4 million dollars. As mentioned above, the new greens will not be overseeded and has been planned this way for many years. Like any new green that is installed, they will be firm for the 1st year or 2 until they start to mature and create organic matter to soften them. Staff will be starting off with higher heights of cut and will adjust as needed (we can always lower them but in the winter when they are not growing, we can’t raise them). Staff appreciates everyone patience during the closures and know that the end product will be worth the wait.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
Implementing New Safety Measures for your fitness routine Most group classes are no longer reaching capacity. We are able to remove them from online registration, and return to our traditional method of paying at the fitness center front desks. More about this in a moment.
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Sun City Grand Fitness is excited about the recent decision by the Board to release some of the restrictions related to the pandemic. We appreciate the time spent by the Board to investigate, research, and implement safety measures to help protect our community. These policy changes have allowed operations to make some changes regarding use of the fitness centers, pools and group fitness classes. Masks that cover the nose and the mouth are still required when participating inside association buildings, including the participation in group fitness classes.
Some classes, including those on Zoom, will continue with online registration for the convenience of our members. Listed are the classes that will remain online: n Deep Water Aerobics at Cimarron 8:30 am n Outdoor Cycle at Cimarron 8:30 / 9 am n Jammin’ at Cimarron 9 am n Pure Burn outdoor 6 / 7:15 am n Suspension Training 8 am When registering for classes at the fitness center front desks, keep in mind that we no longer accept cash or checks; credit cards only. We strongly encourage our members to place funds on their credit book account to pay for guest and class fees at SCG Fitness. A deposit of at least
$20 will go a long way to improve the efficiency of check ins when at the front desk.
If you are unfamiliar with credit book, it is similar to a savings account that you can draw against to pay for fitness center guest fees, personal training and group fitness. Guest fees will resume beginning May 17th. We are grateful to the Board for waiving these fees during the spring break season. Guest fees are $5 for guests 16 yrs. +, and $3 for guests under the age of 16. Children under 1 year are free. Adult guests are allowed to enjoy the SCG gyms, walking track and pools during open hours. Children may visit the Adobe lagoon pool from 10 am – 2 pm. If you have been holding on to free guest or free class passes, you will be able to use them now (Guest passes May 17th) for transactions processed at the fitness center front desks. We look forward to serving you

Incredible, seasonal recipes to cook in May! These vibrant, healthy spring recipes celebrate spring produce like avocado, berries and greens, and are just as delicious as they are colorful.
WHAT’S IN SEASON IN MAY?
This month’s spring produce is looking even more colorful, and can easily be swapped for what you have on-hand. Hello, berries in everything!
Good Morning Healthy Blueberry Zucchini Muffins
Summer Strawberry Spinach Salad with Avocado
PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES COOK TIME: 20 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 30 MINUTES SERVES 12
PREP TIME: 20 MINUTES COOK TIME: 2 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 22 MINUTES SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS n 1 ½ cups white whole wheat flour or whole wheat pastry flour n 1 teaspoon baking soda n 1 teaspoon cinnamon n ¼ teaspoon salt n 1 cup shredded zucchini, squeezed of excess moisture with a paper towel n ½ cup pure maple syrup (or honey) n ½ teaspoon vanilla extract n ¼ teaspoon almond extract n 2 tablespoons olive oil (or sub melted butter) n ¹⁄ cup unsweetened applesauce (or apple butter) ³ n 1 egg n ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk (any milk will work) n 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
INGREDIENTS For the salad: n 1 package (5 ounces) organic spinach n 8 ounces strawberries, halved (about 2 cups halved strawberries) n 1 large avocado, sliced n ½ small red onion, thinly sliced n ½ cup feta crumbles n ¹⁄ cup raw sliced almonds ³ n ¼ cup chopped shelled roasted pistachios For the balsamic strawberry vinaigrette: n 3 tablespoon balsamic vinegar n ¼ cup olive oil n 1 garlic clove, grated or finely minced n ½ teaspoon dijon mustard n ½ tablespoon strawberry jam (or jam of choice) n Freshly ground salt and pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 12 cup muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray or line with muffin liners. Either way I recommend using nonstick cooking spray. This guarantees that they muffins will not stick to the liners or the pan. 2. In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; set aside. 3. In a separate medium bowl, add the following wet ingredients: shredded zucchini, pure maple syrup, vanilla and almond extract, olive oil, applesauce, egg and milk; mix until well combined. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Gently fold in blueberries. 4. Even distribute batter among muffin tins, filling about 3/4 of the way full. Bake for 22-30 minutes or until toothpick inserted into the middle of the muffin comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes then remove muffins and transfer to wire rack to finish cooling.
TIPS To make vegan: Use a flax egg instead of a regular egg. To make gluten free: I recommend subbing all purpose gluten free flour, chickpea flour or oat flour. Please note that I haven't tested them with a gluten free sub, so can't be certain they will work.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a mason jar or small bowl, add all of the dressing ingredients. Shake or mix well to combine. Taste and add additional salt/pepper, if necessary. 2. Toast the almonds on the stovetop: add the almonds to a pan and place over medium heat, stirring occasionally for 2-5 minutes until almonds are slightly golden brown. Remove from heat and allow to cool. 3. Add spinach to a large bowl, layer on the strawberries, avocado slices, red onion, feta, toasted almonds, and chopped pistachios. Feel free to add dressing now or set it out for individual servings. Top salad bowls with extra toasted almonds and drizzle each bowl with 1/4 of the dressing.
TIPS
Use a different fruit: if strawberries aren't available, try blueberries, peaches, raspberries or blackberries. They'll all be delicious. Make your own DIY fruity balsamic vinaigrette: I'm in love with this dressing because you can use any fruit jam you like to really make it your own. Try raspberry, strawberry, blackberry or something else for a fun twist.

Through Their Lens An Interview with Grand Photos Club Member Barbara (Brady) Conn view to just what I needed to see: those colorful, identity markings. That binocular view was a beautiful, thrilling world I could enter at will. I absolutely loved going there. One small step to camera viewfinders is all it took to commit me to photography for life.
An experienced and creative photographer, Brady Conn was born and raised in New Jersey. At Grand Photos she is an education class instructor, leads the Seekers & Sojourners special interest group, contributes her creative talent to curating images for the Studio gallery and occasionally leads Club photoshoots to interesting places in Arizona. When did your interest in photography begin? I’m sure it began with birds. At 10 years old I was utterly passionate about watching them. My best friend was my binoculars. They cropped my
18
How did you arrive at Grand? After 20 years of enjoying my small business, Yes! Photography, I began to feel the digital tsunami approaching. Suddenly everyone was a photographer. When disposable cameras and point and shooters began to replace professional wedding photographers, I realized it was time to move on, however, I did not expect to actually move. In 2009 a new friend introduced me to Sun City Grand and the photo club. A year later I settled into my Surprise home and joined the photo club community. Both were wonderful choices. What do you most enjoy about Grand Photos? I especially like the way sharing has become so
central to Grand Photos. Years ago, we saw members’ photographs only twice a year at competition shows and a few monthly at the Creative Eye SIG. Today we share and celebrate our images everywhere and often: all over the Grand Photos website and Facebook page, in SIGs and classes, in Studio showcases and the digital darkroom, at photo shoot reviews, and now at membership gatherings as well. Everything from apps to software tricks is also shared. All of this delights me. How did you find yourself leading the Special Interest Group (SIG), Seekers and Sojourners? A decade ago, huge SLR cameras prevailed at the photo club. Newer members with “point and shoot” cameras spoke of feeling welcome but intimidated. To help them gain skill and confidence, I began offering short shoots, local photo trips to practice the basics then share lunch and images together. That idea morphed into Beginners, a misnomer, until “Seekers & Sojourners” (aka S&S)
better defined the monthly SIG meetings. No matter their skill level or camera type, S&S participants have always improved their photography by sharing topicrelated images, knowledge and kindly comments. Sojourns, local photo shoots, and lunches together were ever popular, too. Covid, of course, changed everything. But we Zoomed together from near and far to enjoy sharing images and seeing each other. In the Studio next fall, Pam Careau will be leading S&S to yet another exciting chapter of growth. I’ll be an avid participant, for sure. What is it about photography that has maintained your interest over so many years? Photography has always offered me playful, creative ways to approach and celebrate beauty. Even when photography as business skewed my work/play ratio to 80/20, my love of that magical viewfinder world never faltered. Given Grand, Grand Photos and my community of friends here, my ratio’s back to 20/80 for good. Once again, my inner child is alive, well and thrilled. What are your favorite things to photograph? Whatever’s in my view usually becomes my new “favorite thing” to photograph. I’ve always believed the extraordinary resides in the ordinary. Light draws my eye to whatever it falls on, be that a face, a scene or a doorknob. That said, I do particularly enjoy photographing bright color, abstracts, lines and angles especially in urban settings, as well as shadows and patterns on anything. Giving images a painterly look in camera or in post-processing also greatly appeals. I think I’m just a generalist in love with light.

YOU Can Make a Difference! What if we told you there’s something you can do that may enrich your life in some unexpected ways? And it takes as little as a few hours a month.
Almost a thousand SCG community member volunteers participate in initiatives and programs that make Grand such a remarkable place to live. Our volunteers tell us that it’s a good feeling to make a difference right here in our community and to be a part of its success. They have the opportunity to challenge themselves, to be creative, and to use the skills, knowledge, and experience they have acquired over the years. Many volunteers look back on the help they’ve received throughout their lives and want to “pay it forward” in a meaningful way. Volunteers feel a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for their efforts. They often experience and learn new things. They enjoy the chance to develop relationships with others and to form and deepen friendships. Research shows that volunteerism increases happiness, confidence, and both mental and physical health. Oh, and did we mention? IT’S FUN!! We’d love to have you join us! Visit Volunteer Central, your one-stop source of information about our many community-wide volunteer roles. A Duty to Serve Our Country and Remember Our Heroes Memorial Day has dual meaning, depending on your perspective. For the average American, it’s the unofficial start to summer. If you served in the military, the holiday has a more important meaning – to honor all of the men and women who died while serving our country in war or peacetime.
before his wife wanted to return to California where she got a job in San Francisco to be near both of their families. He followed her and worked as the executive assistant to the Garrison Commander at the Presidio of San Francisco. After his final retirement, Bob cared for Judy’s parents as well as his brother and mother for many years prior to moving to PebbleCreek, where they stayed for 11 years.
Bob Cowan
“We began to realize that we didn’t need to take care of a big house. The kids were all set and doing well,” Bob said. “We wanted to stay in this area and visited several retirement Life Care communities and settled on The Colonnade. One of the reasons we moved into PebbleCreek was because it was a gated community. The Colonnade is also gated and it’s much more of a campus than the other communities.” At The Colonnade, we have many veterans as residents and team members. We spoke to resident Bob Cowan, who served 26 years in the United States Navy, retiring in 1980; and Colonnade’s Executive Director Nina Louis. Nina served 10 years in the Army as a pharmacy technician. Bob volunteered for Navy Flight training at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in 1954 and got his wings in December 1955. He was assigned to VA-145, an A1 Skyraider Squadron based at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, flying one of the last propeller-driven aircraft in service. Throughout his Navy career, Bob moved a lot and had many roles. What he calls his most important career move, however, happened in 1962 while stationed at NAS Lemoore in Fresno, Calif., after serving at the 20
Philadelphia Naval Ship yards. “I wasn’t happy on the East Coast,” Bob said. “I was transferred to NAS Lemoore after going through helicopter flight training as a search and rescue pilot. I also met and married Judy Bessey, a school teacher from Fresno, and over the years Judy said we’ve moved around 17 times. I think it’s 18.” During this time, Bob and Judy raised three children – Marcia, Andrea and Daniel. Captain Cowan held many roles during his service, including duty with the Chief of Naval Air Reserve Training in Glenview, Illinois; NAS, Dallas, Texas; and Command of the Naval Reserve Centers in Houston and Galveston. He then became the Commanding Officer at NAS Atlanta until his retirement. Bob then worked as an ROTC instructor
Bob and Judy also liked the fact that that they didn’t have to live in one huge building. And, golf is one of Bob’s avocation, which drew him to Sun City Grand. “We just wanted to be sure that we were well taken care of and that’s one of the benefits here at The Colonnade.” Bob has a unique perspective on Memorial Day. “I love genealogy and our family history. My wife has Civil War and Revolutionary War veterans. My father was a World War 1 veteran, my brother was a Korean-era War veteran and my cousins served in World War 2. We’ve lost a lot of people in combat and peacetime. I think about those lives lost serving their country,” Bob said. “I just feel strongly about having served the country. I have a grandson in the Army ROTC who is carrying on the family tradition. It’s not

chose to serve and give their lives for our freedom, liberty, and peace as well as celebrate what they fought for. After 9/11, Memorial Day became extremely personal and real because of my close friends, people I served alongside that paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their country, people who I trusted more than anything. Prior to joining Sun Health, organizations that I served did not have a lot of veterans. The Colonnade has many veterans and immediately, as a veteran, I felt at home. This year, I know I am among people who have experienced the same story and understand why this holiday is so special. It is an unspoken bond that ties us all together and I am very proud to say that and honor Memorial Day this year with our residents. CURRENT EVENTS ROUNDTABLE
PHIL AXELROD Meets 14 times on Tue 6/1–8/31 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM Fee $25.00 Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.
THE SIXTIES: THE WRECKING CREW
VINNIE BRUNO Meets 1 time on Mon 6/14/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $10.00 The Wrecking Crew is widely considered the most successful and prolific group of studio session musicians in popular music. They are responsible for thousands of recordings and several hundred Top 40 hits in the 1960’s and 1970’s. We’ll explore the beginnings of the unit, associated record producers, and many of the session musicians who helped to create the soundtrack for a generation. Our journey will include tracks that the Wrecking Crew worked on for numerous artists including The Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Mamas & Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Ronettes, The Righteous Brothers, Sinatra and many others.
DEMYSTIFYING LONG-TERM CARE
NYDIA MONTIJO Meets 1 time on Wed 6/16/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 Do you have family members who are planning retirement? Is there anyone in the group you serve who, in any way, is looking after another person who no longer can care for themselves as they use to? Are your people connected with anyone who has a disability or is navigating a serious illness? If so, your people are already navigating the complexities of Long Term Care. Grasping what Long Term Care is, what resources and services are out there and which ones are actually needed, and how you pay for all of it can be overwhelming. Our workshop has been designed specifically to help demystify the process and help people understand their options. If you would like to help your members be as equipped as possible to create the best system of resources for their unique life needs, then let’s connect. FSL is here to serve the servants of our society.

The class will define what circumstances can help determine why you may pick one type of plan over another as well as one insurance company over another. THE GOLDEN AGE OF BASEBALL
KEN SORENSEN Meets 1 time on Fri 6/25/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $10.00 Did the game really begin with Abner Doubleday? How did this game become the attraction of the world? Who was Cy Young or Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig? What was the Black Sox Scandal? How did Jackie Robinson crash the color barrier and how did teams (his and others) respond? “Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.” The catch in the 1954 World Series changed what was possible. The Deacon and the difference that he made in the 1960 World Series. The stories go on and on.
GINGERTALKS: BOB DYLAN UNTANGLED
GINGER SWARTZ Meets 1 time on Tue 6/29/2021 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Fee $10.00 For those of us who grew up in the 60s, Bob Dylan is a prophet to many. To others, he’s an aggravation to be ignored as music and often seen to be invisible as a poet. If you’re a Dylan fan, maybe you’ve wondered what all those millions of words really mean? Dylan himself said “These songs of mine, they’re like mystery stories, the kind that Shakespeare saw when he was growing up.” The Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature to Dylan in part because he has been “the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.” This class will focus on Dylan as literature, from the free-form poetry of his book, Tarantula, and his memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, to his ballads and poetry. We’ll talk about his influences, from T.S. Elliot to John Steinbeck and Jack Kerouac, to the folk singer, Woody Guthrie. We’ll discover what literary and rock and roll critics say about selections from the more than 600 songs he wrote, ranging from Hey Mr. Tambourine Man (1965) to his 2020 release, Crossing the Rubicon.
YOU CARE FOR OTHERS, BUT WHO IS CARING FOR YOU?
NYDIA MONTIJO Meets 1 time on Wed 6/30/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 Are you a parent? Do you have parents that you do anything for? Do you in any way assist anyone in your house who has a disability or an ongoing medical condition? If so, you are a caregiver. You are amazing, and we appreciate all of the sacrifices you make on a daily basis- your love for others is a vital part of keeping our society going. But, we are
worried about you. We are noticing an escalating trend of caregivers burning out, getting injured, manifesting their own negative health conditions and some are even dying. We have crafted this workshop specifically to give back to you. We go over the physical and emotional toll of being a caregiver and help identify factors of self-neglect. We provide practical solutions for eliminating fatigue and avoiding it in the future. We review self-care techniques and logistical tips to make any needed change sustainable, reasonable, and doable. Allow us to provide some relief, soothe some possible guilt, and equip you to love in a sustainable way.
SELF-PUBLISHING YOUR MANUSCRIPT
GALE LEACH Meets 1 time on Thur 7/8/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $10.00 This class will introduce you to the options available for self-publishing today. The publishing industry has changed radically over the past few years. It's easier than ever to go from a wordprocessed manuscript to a printed novel or digital eBook (or both), but the number of ways to do this have increased as well. This class will share the best and easiest methods for both print and eBook creation, and you will watch as an actual manuscript is uploaded, formatted, and made available to readers. By the end of the class, you should be able to make a qualified decision regarding the direction your book will take. Please note: There is no right or wrong choice—only the best decision for you as an author.

Many different ways of dieting have emerged to try to curb down obesity. Until there is a basic understanding of how the human body ends up packing the fats, obesity rates will keep rising.

This 90-minute presentation summarizes the history and personalities of the U.S. World War II research effort into developing a working atomic bomb. If you took this class before, you might want to check out this revised version. This time around, in addition to tracing the history, we’ll look at a two short videos. Our workshop will cover these questions and more, including what dementia actually is, what the warning signs are, and how to create an environment that is friendly to those who have been diagnosed. The question isn’t about whether or not you will run into someone with dementia, but when. If you want to be someone who can respond with respect for what they are going through and act in a way that is safe for both you and them, then this presentation is a must.

WHY DISCONTINUATION OF DIABETES MEDICATION IS POSSIBLE DR. EDELITA JAMIS Meets 1 time on Mon 7/26/2021 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Fee $5.00 This class will bust common myths about type 2 diabetes mellitus, such as “you can never get off insulin” or “once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you have diabetes forever”. This disease has affected so many Americans who are now relying on multiple medications, including insulin.
Yet, the complications of this chronic condition long-term are not slowing down at all. The reason is that there has always been a disconnect in how we understand diabetes. This class will show you how people with diabetes are now gaining control of their disease, leading to reduction or even discontinuation of medications, including insulin.

How about Best Buy that has multiple shelves devoted to not only lights that can change their color, but also controls for them that are either wireless or voice activated? Welcome to lighting and their controls in the 21st Century! LED's have rendered incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps obsolete. Electronic lighting controls are now capable of not only Offand-On functions, but are fully automated for either pre-scheduled, voice or wireless operation. It's recommended (but not required) that you know the material in the Home Automation for Beginners Class.

THE SUN CITY GRAND
MUSIC CLUB’S HALL OF FAME HONORS THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED KEEP US IN HARMONY OVER THE YEARS The Music Club was started in 1998 by a small group of resident music lovers and its membership grew enthusiastically because it provided residents with lots of different ways to enhance the wonderful world of music in our community. Whether playing an instrument, vocalizing, performing in groups, or just doing whatever it takes behind the scenes to make sure each performance comes off professionally, the Club has kept members motivated and most of all having fun. Each year since 2001, the Club has selected up to 3 members to receive a ‘Hall of Fame Award’ to reflect their dedication and outstanding contributions to the Club. The Award would not only be given to the best performers in the Club, but would also include those who worked tirelessly on the many tasks required to run an all-volunteer organization – including publicists, stage managers, costumers and our technical wizards. They all work together to make the Club hum. The pandemic prevented the Award to be given in 2020 so this year there were three honorees
KAY JEFFERS
DENNIS MUEHLING
ALAN NIELSEN
Kay has been a long-time member of the Grand Singers. She has also sung in the Chorale since its beginning in 2004. In the early days, she would hold sectionals in her home and also sang in some ensembles in the Grand Singers. She has been the head librarian for the Grand Singers for many years. This is a full-time job from the time the music arrives in August for the holiday music, to making sure the music was available for purchase on rehearsal days, and even sending music to those singers who weren’t able to return in time to join the group at the beginning of the season. Always with a smile on her face, Kay’s exceptional organizational skills were just one of several reasons she is a most worthy recipient of this Award.
Dennis has been a member of the Grand Singers and Chorale for 10 years and served on the Grand Singers Council for three years. He was always willing to help where needed – facilitating ticket sales, helping singers purchase their music – wherever he was needed most. He has served on the Music Club Board as an officer and often volunteered for CAM events in which the MC was asked to participate -- such as Oktoberfest and Newcomer Orientation gatherings. He also served on the nominating committee for both the Grand Singers Council as well as the Music Club Board. Dennis has sung in ensembles in many Celebration of Music events as well as the Music Club Showcases.
Again this year, one of the Club’s "Unsung Heroes" has joined the ranks of the Hall of Famers. Alan is one of those technical wizards who quietly works in the background to make sure the MC events are the best they can be. He works well in that environment, taking an active interest in Tech Support functions and using his technical background to good advantage in those tasks -- all with little fanfare. Alan became active with the Tech team shortly after he moved to Grand in 2010. His specialty is in the lighting requirements for many of the Grand’s shows at the Sonoran Ballroom, the Cimarron Center and the Amphitheater. The Club is proud of its professional lighting systems, and it takes a team of professionals to make sure they are utilized to their maximum capability.

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Julie Madden (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us!
Words of Appreciation and Congratulations We miss our volunteers!
Many of our C.H.A.P.S. volunteers have been on a year long sabbatical due to the pandemic. BC (Before COVID) we met every month, even during the summer. We inspected hundreds of homes while you were away at your summer home or on a cruise. We rang your doorbell to get you to close your open garage door before you fell into bed. We listened as you blamed your ‘better half’ for leaving the garage door open in the first place. 😊 We picked up the driveway newspapers you forgot to cancel before you left. We made sure that water running down the street was not coming from YOUR house. If the water was coming from your house, we knocked on your door to let you know. Our volunteers reported street light outages to APS for replacement. We did this and more, with a spring in our step, in service to all of you. Our volunteers help make Sun City Grand a safe and beautiful place to live and thrive. We are a friendly bunch and would love to have you join us as our community reopens.
Thank you to our volunteers past and present!
Congratulations! The following volunteers have service anniversaries this year:
5 Years Gregory Cox, Stanley Debber, Mary Lewis, Jim Sterling and Kim Sterling 10 Years Vito Coppola and Arleen Vines 15 Years Ron Cromey and Ed Speicher
Vacation Watch
While you are on vacation, or away for the summer, C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will periodically inspect the outside of your home. They check doors and windows. Volunteers also pick-up flyers and papers. Service is available to those who will be away from their homes for a period of 14 or more days.
Evening Patrol
Evening Patrol Service volunteers patrol our streets at night, helping identify suspicious activity. Volunteers look for breaches of security, such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles, and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards are reported to the proper authorities.
Training
Even during the pandemic we are staying safe and training new volunteers.

We offer monthly happy hours, breakfasts, luncheons, a few dances with live bands, and a variety of special events like trivia night, chili cook-off, and we have an ongoing book club. Boomers visited Amazon's local distribution facility, had a day at the races at Paradise Downs and a social event at TopGolf in 2020. Our club is the antitheses of social distancing so all of our events are on hold at the moment, except for the book club on zoom. Please check us out at www.scgboomers.com That is where we advertise new events as our members schedule them. We look forward to meeting new Boomers soon.

MAH JONGG
The Sun City Grand Mah Jongg Club is again open for play! We are enjoying playing with the new 2021 card, which became effective on April 1, 2021. There are lots of changes on the new card, but also some old favorite hands. We play according to National Mah Jongg League rules, with four people to a table. We generally play in the Hopi Room at the Chaparral Center. We are not allowing guests at this time, but you can join the club and come to play
36
with us, assuming you know how to play. See our Reopen Plan and Rules on our website, www.scgmahjongg.net which also includes a tab for a membership application. Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, calculation, memory, and involves a degree of luck. It is an excellent game to keep your brain lively. Our club offers lessons each year, and we have a plan in place to give lessons this Fall. Lessons are a good way to learn the game in a more relaxed setting. If you would like to be on the list for lessons, please email us at scgmahjonggclub19@ cox.net. One of the nice things about playing with us is that you can arrive or leave at any time during play after you have played a round (4 games) at a table. After you are East, you go to the front of the room and wait for the next available table. It’s a great way to meet other members and make new mah jongg friends. You do not need to bring a mah jongg set, only your current 2021 card. If you do not have a 2021 card, you can order one at the National League website, which is: www.nationalmahjonggleague.org. We also hold tournaments each year, and now that things are opening up, we will schedule a tournament later this year. Tournaments are another great way of improving mah jongg skills and making new friends. We play in the Hopi Room on Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 4 p.m., and on Wednesdays from 5:45 to 9:30 p.m. Check us out – Bring your current 2021 mah jongg card, $5.00 in change, your Cam card and your covid vaccine card,. VOICE DICTATION TIPS
I used to have an Android phone and could dictate instead of write emails, notes, text messages, etc. Recently I got a new iPhone but do not understand how to dictate on the new device. Any suggestions are appreciated. Ron from SCG
Dear Ron, Like Android smartphones, Apple has a built-in dictation feature and it works very much like your old smartphone. If you do not see the microphone icon on your keyboard, it may not be enabled. Just open your iPhone and go to Settings> General> Keyboard (it is the 8th option down). Click the arrow on the right and under Dictation, tap “Enable Dictation” and you will be ready to go. To use voice dictation, in whatever app you are using,
once the Keyboard appears, click the microphone icon in the lower right corner and begin speaking. When you are done, click the on-screen keyboard at the bottom, to stop dictation and to add to or edit whatever you dictated. If you need to get back into dictation mode, just tap the microphone button again. It is also quite easy to format your text while dictating. For example, if you would like to begin a new line (like pressing Return on a keyboard), just say “new line.” If you want to start a new paragraph, just

say “new paragraph,” and a new paragraph will begin with your next words uttered. To capitalize a single letter, say “cap,” then the letter, quickly. To turn on capitalizing the first letter of every word, say “caps on” (and to disable, say “caps off”). To make the next word entirely capitalized, say “all caps” before you speak the word. If you want all the next words you speak, in caps, say “all caps on” and Cap Lock will remain on until you turn it off. You can disable Cap Lock by saying “all caps off.” To use punctuation while dictating is also simple. Just say the name of the punctuation character. When you say the word “comma,” “period,” “question mark,” “exclamation mark,” “hyphen,” etc. they each produce their special equivalent character on the screen instead of the words themselves. For symbols like “hashtag,” “asterisk,” “ampersand,” etc. the proper symbols will pop up on the screen as well. When you need to jot down something or get your train of thought written quickly

Special thanks to Ursula, for sending Cappie the photo of handsome 7-year-old dog, Elliott.
as not to forget, it makes good sense to utilize voice dictation. It makes better use of your time and eliminates repetitive use of your thumbs, which helps to combat carpal tunnel and other injuries to your fingers, thumbs and hands.

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand.
