MEMBER CODE OF CONDUCT

1. Members must conduct themselves so as not to jeopardize or interfere with the rights and privileges of other members, occupants or guests.

2. Members are responsible for the conduct of their occupants and guests, who will be held to the same standard of conduct as set forth herein for Members.

3. Members will refrain from loud, profane, indecent or abusive language.

4. Members will not harass or accost any other Member, occupant, guest, Association employee, director, officer, committee person or service provider. Physical or verbal abuse will not be tolerated.

5. Members will not compromise the safety of themselves and/or others by their actions. Members shall obey all safety rules and shall cease and desist all unsafe activity.

6. Members will be held responsible for any damage to Association property caused by the Member and/or Member, occupants or guests.

7. Members shall not interfere with management of the Association, and/or reprimand or discipline any Association employee, or service provider. Comments and complaints are to be directed to the Association General Manager, who may require that the complaint be submitted in writing before taking action on the complaint.

8. Members are prohibited from profiting financially from their membership by charging occupants or guests for use of the Association Facilities. The Association and/or Chartered Clubs may, from time to time, enter into contracts with Members to provide products or services for an approved fee.

9. Proper dress is required in all Association Facilities in accordance with the following basic guidelines:

1. Upper body garments must be worn in all activities, except males using aquatic facilities.

2. Bathing suits are required in all aquatic facilities. No cut-offs are allowed.

3. Appropriate athletic apparel is required in athletic sport areas, which includes specific footwear and/or clothing.

DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS: Any Member who conducts him/herself in an unbecoming manner or who breaks an Association Rule or Regulation is subject to disciplinary action as per Rules and Regulations, Article III as follows:

“The Declaration also provides that the Board of Directors may impose sanctions for violation of these Rules and Regulations (after notice and hearing, if required by the Declaration), including without limitation the following:

n Suspension of the voting rights of a Member.

n Imposition of reasonable monetary fines.

n Suspension of a person's right to use any of the Association facilities.

n Suspension of services to a member or to a lot.

n Levying benefited assessments against an owner's lot to cover expenses incurred pursuant to section 9.8 (B) of the Declaration. f. Compliance Enforcement Procedures & Fine Policy."

Introduction & Bio

I am excited to be joining such a great team and extraordinary community at The Grand. My golf journey began at Desert Springs in 1998 as a high schooler working Outside Services. As I went on to ASU I stayed in the golf business at clubs like Gold Canyon Golf Resort, Whisper Rock, Coldwater, & an internship at White Eagle Country Club in Naperville, IL. After graduating I pursued a career in golf which led me to General Manager positions in Kansas City & Omaha before returning home to manage The Legend at Arrowhead & Stonecreek Golf Club for the past nine years.

On a personal note, I am happily married to my wife who is an Optometrist at Midwestern University. You can find us on evenings and weekends attending numerous sports practices or games for our two young daughters. In our spare time we are cheering on any of the Arizona professional sports teams and, of course, playing the great game of golf.

I look forward to utilizing my experiences to serve this great community.

OVERSEED playing tips

It is that time of year again and the courses will be reopening from overseed soon. Here are a couple things to note after overseed takes place:

n The playing conditions will be slow, soft, and damp.

n Use a more lofted club off the tee in order to maximize your carry distance.

n Use less bounce on your wedges as the turf underneath the ball has not developed.

n Move the ball forward in your stance when putting or use a putter with more loft on it in order to get the ball rolling.

n With the green speeds slower than usual, you should play less break on putts.

Ask Edith Smith, a proud 103-year-old, about her friends, and she’ll give you an earful.

There’s Johnetta, 101, whom she’s known for 70 years and who has Alzheimer’s disease. “I call her every day and just say ‘Hi, how are you doing?’ She never knows, but she says hi back, and I tease her,” Smith said.

Then there’s Rhea, 90, whom Smith visits regularly at a retirement facility. And Mary, 95, who doesn’t leave her house anymore, “so I fix her a basket about once a month of jelly and little things I make and send it over by cab.” And fellow residents at Smith’s Chicago senior community, whom she recognizes with a card and a treat on their birthdays.

“I’m a very friendly person,” Smith said, when asked to describe herself.

That may be one reason why this lively centenarian has an extraordinary memory for someone her age, suggests a recent study by researchers at Northwestern University highlighting a notable link between brain health and positive relationships.

For nine years, these experts have been examining “Super-Agers” — men and women over age 80 whose memories are as good — or better — than people 20 to 30 years younger. Every couple of years, the group fills out surveys about their lives and gets a battery of neuropsychological tests, brain scans and a neurological

“When we started this project, we weren’t really sure we could find these individuals,” said Emily Rogalski, an associate professor at the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

But find them they did: Thirty-one older men and women with exceptional memories, mostly from Illinois and surrounding states, are currently participating in the project. “Part of the goal is to characterize them — who are they, what are they like,” Rogalski said.

Previous research by the Northwestern group provided tantalizing clues, showing that Super-Agers have distinctive brain features: thicker cortexes, a resistance to age-related atrophy and a larger left anterior cingulate (a part of the brain important to attention and working memory).

But brain structure alone doesn’t fully account for Super-Agers’ unusual mental acuity, Rogalski suggested. “It’s likely there are a number of critical factors that are implicated,” she said.

For their new study, the researchers asked 31 Super-Agers and 19 cognitively “normal” older adults to fill out a 42-item questionnaire about their psychological well-being. The Super-Agers stood out in one area: the degree to which they reported having satisfying, warm, trusting relationships. (In other areas, such as having a purpose in life or retaining autonomy, they were much like their “normal” peers.)

“Social relationships are really important” to this group and might play a significant role in preserving their cognition, Rogalski said.

That finding is consistent with other research linking positive relationships to a reduced risk of cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Still, researchers haven’t examined how SuperAgers sustain these relationships and whether their experiences might include lessons for others.

Smith, one of the Super-Agers, has plenty of thoughts about that. At her retirement community, she’s one of nine people who welcome new residents and try to help make them feel at home. “I have a smile for everybody,” she said. “I try to learn someone’s name as soon as they come in, and if I see them it’s ‘Good morning, how do you do?’” You have to listen to what people have to say.” What she does every day, she said, is “show people I care.”

William “Bill“ Gurolnick, 86, another Super-Ager in the study, realized the value of becoming more demonstrative after he retired from a sales and marketing position in 1999. “Men aren’t usually inclined to talk about their feelings, and I was a keep-things-inside kind of person,” he explained. “But opening up to other people is one of the things that I learned to do.”

With a small group of other men who’d left the work world behind, Gurolnick helped found a men’s group, Men

Enjoying Leisure, which now has nearly 150 members and has spawned four similar groups in the Chicago suburbs.  Every month, the group meets for two hours, including one hour they spend discussing personal issues — divorce, illness, children who can’t find jobs, and more.

“We learn people aren’t alone in the problems they’re dealing with,” Gurolnick said, adding that a dozen or so of the men have become good friends.

“Bill is the glue that holds the whole group together,” said Buddy Kalish, 80, a member of the group in Northbrook,

Ill., a Chicago suburb. “He’s very, very caring — the first one to send out a thank-you note, the first one to send out a notice when there’s been a death in the family.”

Activities are another way of cultivating relationships for Gurolnick. On Mondays, he bikes 20 to 30 miles with more than a dozen older men — many of them from his men’s group — followed by lunch. On Tuesdays, he’s part of a walking group, followed by coffee. On Wednesdays, he goes to the Wenger Jewish Community Center in Northbrook for two hours of water volleyball. On Thursdays, it’s back to the JCC for pickleball, a racquet sport.

“You really get a sense of still being alive,” Gurolnick said, when asked what he takes away from these interactions. “You get a sense of not being alone.”

Without her best friend, Grayce, whom she’s known since high school, and friends who live in her condominium complex, Evelyn Finegan, 88, might have become isolated. Another SuperAger, Finegan is hard of hearing and has macular degeneration in both eyes, but otherwise is astonishingly healthy.

“It’s very important to keep up with your friends — to pick up the phone and call,” said Finegan, who talks to Grayce almost daily and chats with four other friends from high school on a regular basis.

Today, the staples of Finegan’s life are her church; a monthly book club; volunteering at a resale shop in Oak Park, Ill.; socializing with a few people in her building; attending a club of Welsh women; and seeing her daughter, her son-in-law and grandchildren, who live in Oregon, whenever she can.

Lost & Found

The Colonnade’s Craft Fair, which is a no cost event for the public, is happening on Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Additional details on page 79).

This event is extra special because Sun Health residents made sure the proceeds from vendor fees are invested in the futures of Sun Health’s well-deserving team members.

“The Colonnade craft fair was not intended to make money. Our vendor fees were kept low to allow multiple vendor participation. In turn, all vendor fees are donated to our Employee Scholarship Committee. Our employees do so much for us all year. If our donation can allow even one employee to further their education, we all win.” shares Jill Mallaghan, The Colonnade resident and chair of the Octoberfest event.

Resident Scholarship committee cochair and The Colonnade resident, Janet Rehman, says scholarship monies can be used for a variety of educational pursuits including two to four-year higher

education, vocational or trade degrees as well as coursework towards certifications or licensure.

“The scholarship fund is underwritten solely by The Colonnade residents and is managed by a small group of resident volunteers. Our residents see this fund as a wonderful benefit to the valued team members at Sun Health,” says Rehman.

Rehman proudly shares that since its

inception in 2015, the committee has awarded 102 scholarships totaling nearly $150,000.

Mallaghan is excited because more than 50 talented vendors will be displaying their one-of-a-kind crafts and artwork during the festival.

“The goals is to help artists and crafters who work hard all year long to create their product, be able to share and sell it,” says Mallaghan.

“By purchasing from craft fairs you are supporting local artisans who create items you won’t find anywhere else.”

Leslie Morrison of Wickenburg, a vendor signed up for the fair, is excited to show off her specialty items, Hawaiian rompers for baby boys. Her mom, Sharon Pearson, is a resident at The Colonnade.

“I’m so glad for fun events like this that benefit the seniors living there (through crafting, buying, and selling) and rewards the terrific young folks that take such good care of the Sun Health residents. They deserve it!”

October is the best month, although I have to admit March in the desert isn’t bad either.

Average temperature in October is 89. We average one day of rain in October (we’ll hope for more this year), and the end of the month is actually cooler than the beginning. October is National Cookie Month (bet you didn’t know that). Nice.

By the time you read this little missive our budget for 2023 should be headed for BOD consideration. It happens almost every October. The progress on the Falls Restaurant will be even more visible, and conversations about other improvements, enhancements, replacements and new paint will continue to fill the BOD Agenda.

New ideas to make life even better at Grand will raise both the ire, and gratitude of members. More exchanges of concern, or the lack of it, will eventually result in decisions that amaze, satisfy and infuriate – all at the same time. More

worn out equipment will be slated for replacement, and Cimarron will have a fresh coat of paint and new floors to invite members of the community to relax, work out, play table tennis and enjoy all the other activities that have become second nature to us in Grand. And most of this happens because of volunteers.

Sure, there’s a paid staff (CAM). In our case it happens to be an extraordinarily talented group of men and women who actually care. They want more than anything to make your life fuller, happier, more respectful and satisfying. That is a very big order. But they try to meet the expectations of thousands of Grand residents by working hard, and pulling together to create a vibrant lifestyle that is safe and truly fulfilling.

But let’s get back to those volunteers. Hundreds of folks that throw themselves at daily and long range opportunities with an uncommon dedication.

I’m pleased to be a member of one of those groups; the Board of Directors.

I was appointed to my position after a couple of years on the FAC. The six community leaders that I joined bring an extraordinary level of imagination and management

expertise to bear on the very complex problems of running a sophisticated and demanding business. No sugar coating either. The men and women serving you on the BOD represent you and your interests with a sincere desire to make Grand the very best place it can be. I’m delighted they chose me to help.

We try to tell it the way it is; how we got here, and where we think we should end up. And we listen to the residents during the whole process. The board members may not always see a new concept through the same colored glasses as the membership, but even in the face of some very vocal detractors we present our ideas and rationale, and then make a decision. Oh, did I mention that we are all volunteers. No

bennies, folks. Nothing but the knowledge that the decisions we make will be the best they can be with the hope that the majority of the residents will truly benefit from those decisions.

The stuff and substance here is to remind all of us that no single person, or even group, controls the destiny of Grand. We’re all in this together, and volunteering is a great way to participate, be heard, and yes, make a difference. October is memories of Aspen groves, Red Oaks, pumpkin patches and football. And as L.M. Montgomery (Author of Anne of Green Gables) said “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers”. It’s also a great month to volunteer. (volunteers4grand@scgcam.com)

It’s that time of year when we welcome new and returning homeowners to Sun City Grand!

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to one of the volunteer groups that serve here in Grand. Before I outline the group’s main functions, we also serve at a couple of community events that are coming up in the next month. One event is our Community Garage Sale on Saturday, November 12th where we direct vendor traffic to their sold spaces. The other event is the Fall Newcomers Mixer that will be held on Monday, November 14th. At the Newcomers Mixer, you will see a table with a black “skirt” that displays the word C.H.A.P.S. in large yellow letters. C.H.A.P.S. stands for Community Homeowner Patrol Service. Stop by our table and learn more about C.H.A.P.S.

Our group serves two main functions: Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch.

Evening Patrol: Teams of two drive around in the evening and check for open garage doors, and streetlights that are not operational. We also report any other suspicious activity. The SCG community is broken down into 6 zones. When a patrol team goes out on patrol, they will only patrol one zone as determined by the dispatcher who mans the desk at the C.H.A.P.S. office. The zone is methodically driven by turn by turn navigation as called out to the driver by the navigator. When an open garage door is spotted, the team stops

Classroom and in-car training are provided prior to being turned loose on your own.

As a C.H.A.P.S. volunteer, we ask that you serve two days per month. This is not mandatory, but simply a guideline. And, yes, you can be one of those lucky snowbirds who get to escape for the summer and still be an active C.H.A.P.S. member.

and notifies the homeowner right away. Our goal is to provide this notification for the sake of the homeowner’s safety. We also stop when the garage is open high enough for someone to crawl under. When we see a non-functioning streetlight, we record the pole number and file a report with APS. Evening Patrol is a 2-hour shift.

Vacation Watch: This is a FREE service! A homeowner must be away for a minimum of 2 weeks to sign up for this service. A team of two goes out in the early morning hours to check vacation homes in a section that is determined by the office coordinator. We simply perform a walk around of a home checking for unlocked doors and windows. At no time do we enter a home. Vacation Watch is a 2-hour shift. Even if you do not become a C.H.A.P.S.

Community Association Management (CAM) provides our group with vehicles to drive. You have likely already seen one of our white vehicles driving through the community. They each display a yellow magnetic sign with C.H.A.P.S. in black letters.

WE NEED YOU! Like any volunteer organization, we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way.

Pat and his wife, Rock Borracchini, have resided in Sun City Grand since 2003 and have been members of the Grand Pickleball Club since inception.

Pat has amassed close to 290 competition award medals, the majority being Gold medals, including 15 National titles. In addition to consistently winning titles and medals, Pat has been active in promoting and teaching the sport of pickleball at all levels. Pat was the original Clinic Director

for the Grand Pickleball Club, conducting many clinics over the years, helping new players master the game. Pat also sat on the tournament rating committee to assure that all players were ranked appropriately for competitive play, and has spent many hours refereeing tournaments both locally and nationally. He has also been instrumental in the training of referees, and a major contributor to the implementation of rule changes, as the sport has evolved.

Pat has been a huge draw for the Grand Pickleball Club.

Many of the Pickleball Club’s current members moved into Sun City Grand in the hopes of playing with and against one of pickleball’s greatest players. You can often see Pat out on the courts playing both singles and doubles, regardless of the weather. As one of Pat’s most ardent of fans is fond of saying, “watching Pat play pickleball is like watching poetry in motion.”

Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is truly a welldeserved honor. Pat is, simply stated, a legendary player in the sport that is

exploding around the world. Let’s all give a hand to Pat for attaining something most of us can only dream of, membership in the exclusive club of Hall of Fame’s greatest players.

Longtime residents John and Joan Bean recently took time out their busy schedules packing, primping, posing for photos, while preparing to leave Sun City Grand.

By press time, the couple may have already uprooted to relocate to Washington, D.C., reuniting with family, friends and a foundation that made them both unforgettable to those whose paths they crossed in Arizona.

For nearly 20 years, the couple has made Sun City Grand their home but are bidding the community good bye in the fall. Before leaving, Joan did a promotional video highlighting the benefits of the Grand Election Team GET – she was heavily involved with since its early stages.

Politics aside, she and her husband have their reasons for moving to the nation’s capital.

“We decided it was time to move closer to family, old friends, and Arlington National Cemetery. We will be returning to the East Coast in early October,” said Joan.

Dealing with a “pretty hectic” schedule, packing and downsizing, she stated although they are not keeping a home in SCG, they plan on coming back to visit.

“We have made some wonderful friends and will look forward to seeing them all when we visit,” Joan said in her signature glasses and hairstyle.

What will you miss most about SCG?

My friends and my volunteering. I have been privileged to participate not only on GET, but on the CARE Committee before it was dissolved, as a neighborhood ambassador at the inception of the program, on the Volunteer Advisory Council whose goal was to hire in place a Volunteer Program Manager, and most importantly as a volunteer at the Welcome Center since it started in 2008. I loved meeting potential residents of Grand and sharing with them all the wonderful things we have to offer.

Did you retire from a career, if so, what was your profession?

I started my work career at the National Archives. I did photographic research for authors and book publishers who were seeking illustrations for their work from

the millions of photographic materials held by the Archives– from civil war Mathew Brady photos to iconic WWII photos and everything in between.

After a hiatus to raise my children, I first worked at a travel agency and then I opened a cruise travel agency from where I eventually retired.

Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised in Philadelphia.

Where did you matriculate?

I started college at Syracuse University and then transferred in my junior year to New York University.

What are your hobbies and were you able to expound on them here?

My hobbies are cooking, reading, and travel and I have been able to enjoy all of them while living here.

“John, his wife Sarah, and their children Miles and Kathryn were our next-door neighbors in Fairfax Virginia for eight years (1971-1979) before they moved to Charleston, South Carolina – their daughter Kathryn babysat my two children, David and Jennifer for those eight years,” stated Joan. “After losing our spouses in 2000, and reconnecting, we got married in McLean, Virginia April of 2002.”

What will you miss most about SCG?

My early morning breakfasts with friends and volunteering especially at the Welcome Center. Being able to contribute to the excitement people feel when we tell them about SCG makes volunteering so worthwhile.

What groups/activities/did you enjoy participating in and why?

First of all, the Code of Conduct committee. I thought it was a necessary part of SCG and I wanted to contribute to the process of making it work. Also volunteering at the Welcome Desk. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with the people who were anxious to find out all that Grand has to offer and being able to tell them about all of our fabulous amenities.

Did you retire from a career, if so, what was your profession?

I retired from the Army in 1974 and then had a career in human resource management for manufacturing facilities.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Rockport Massachusetts and raised in NJ, NY, and Florida.

Where did you matriculate?

The Citadel in Charleston, SC.

What are your hobbies and were you able to expound on them here?

I enjoy history and was able to take many classes here on both the history of the Civil War and WWll.

Before moving to SCG in 2003, the two lived in Virginia, South Carolina, and Maine to name a few places. They were enroute to California to look for a house when they stopped at Grand so John could visit his brother who then lived in Sun City West, recalled Joan.

“After we left a check with a realtor in Palm Desert to bid on a house there, I changed my mind and asked him to hold off for a few days so we could come back to Grand to look around. It took about 10 seconds of driving into the community when we called the realtor and asked him to tear up the check,” she said.

Since then, the Beans have made an impact and many friends in the community by volunteering in different aspects. If you did not have a chance to meet them, more information is in the question and answer.

Want to meet others that share this interest? If so, then plan to come over to the beautiful 18-hole putting green located just west of the Cimarron club house, right off of W. Clearview Blvd. You are invited to play a “guest” round with one of a Men Putters club member.

PUTTING SCHEDULE

The Men Putters do “their thing” weekly on Tuesday and Wednesday, at 1:00 PM, both days, starting in November. Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt both days.

HERE IS A TYPICAL DAILY EVENT

Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.

Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc., starting November 1.

The Men Putters is a new club, started several years ago, and membership has continued to grow with each new season.

“A house built on sand cannot stand." Our national home, the United States of America, is not built on sand. It is built on the bedrock of our Constitution, withstanding the storms of politics, abused and misused, even civil war. Many try to emulate it, none succeed in every aspect. It remains unique. This course is not about the current conflicts among political parties or angry adherents for one side or the other. It is about a document which has stood the test of time and conflict. It makes us who we are as a nation. It defines American culture. Our first session addresses events from the first settlement of Europeans on our eastern seaboard, through our War for Independence, to the making of the Constitution. The second session addresses the Bill of Rights and ratification of the other amendments. Our third and final session examines some landmark decisions of the Supreme Court (personal choices of mine). My hope is that this little narrative nugget will capture the attention of those truly interested in this historic document.

These are questions many people have about Medicare. The class will explain what the difference is between a Medigap policy (Supplement) and a Part C (HMO, Medicare Advantage). The class will define what circumstances can help determine why you may pick one type of plan over another as well as one insurance company over another. Everyone's scenario is different whether they are currently in Medicare or entering into Medicare for the first time.

The British poets of WWI had a rich treasury of poetry upon which to draw, but the poetry they themselves wrote is truly remarkable in its power and majesty. (Many of the poems will be illustrated.) Come, enjoy, and view works found in the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the world’s largest museum of decorative arts, applied arts, and design. The V&A has collections from art to underwear, furniture to fashion, pottery to prints, and everything else in between in their vast permanent collection of over 2.3 million objects that span 5,000 years of human history. The V&A was founded with a mission to educate designers, manufacturers, and the public in art and design. It was founded in 1852 and renamed in 1899 after Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, commemorating his role in its establishment. We will begin with a brief history of the V&A and continue with viewing and discussing some of the works in this museum.

The Colorado River is an amazing feature of our life in the Desert Southwest. In its entirety, it provides approximately 40% of the water supply for over 40 million people in the region. Yet this natural resource is increasingly under pressure. It is already “oversubscribed” with the situation being exacerbated by continued population growth and climate change. This course will focus on the prospects for the continued growth and development of the Desert Southwest. This class will include: Session I - The Colorado River Basin: How big is it? What are the populations it serves? Session II - What are the challenges which the Colorado River Basin will face in the years ahead, including population growth, climate change, etc. and Session III - What are some of the solutions being proposed to alleviate the challenges faced by the Colorado River in being able to supply our future water resource needs - including conservation, sea water desalination, etc.

It is defined as genocide and though genocide has occurred throughout history, the Holocaust was unique. In this class, I will discuss the meaning of genocide and why the Holocaust was distinctively different. In addition, I will talk about what led up the start of World War II in Germany, what my parents endured during the Holocaust and as the son of Holocaust Survivors, how my life was influenced by those experiences. The Sun City Grand Bocce Club plays on the courts near the Adobe pools, and equipment is stored in the closets near the restrooms. We are currently playing Drop-In bocce on Wednesday evenings starting at 6 p.m. We hope to begin Tuesday morning drop-in again when the weather warms up a bit. BRIDGE CLUB

At the SCG Bridge Club, Bridge IS for everyone! The most common misunderstanding among

those who play cards is that the game of bridge is deadly serious with little social engagement, played in perfect silence by super-intellectuals who have advanced degrees in mathematics.

As a lifelong bridge player, I can tell you that none of this is true (especially the super-intellectual part). Whether your card game is Poker, Canasta, Rummy or Hand and Foot, you can enjoy an afternoon or evening of “social” bridge with friends or a more competitive game of “duplicate” bridge at our club. Both forms of the game offer the same competitive challenges as the games mentioned above, as well as the chance to have fun with friendly folks at all skill levels.

DANCE CLUB LESSONS

The Sun City Grand Dance Club hosts lessons and dances that promote fitness, mind-body connections, and social interactions for a myriad of ages and physical abilities.  Ballroom is the place for an hour of movement and education that suits most couples.  Line dance provides one or two hours of non-stop contemporary dance for the dancer without a partner.  Each week of instruction includes fun and inclusion with fellow dancers.  The latest information is posted on the Dance Club website:  www. scgdanceclub.org.

BALLROOM LESSONS

Ballroom lessons are held each Tuesday from October through April at Cimarron Center with Csaba Vadasz. Lessons start October 18. Basic/ beginner lessons begin with The Waltz from 4 to 5 p.m. The intermediate class, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. will begin with West Coast Swing. LINE DANCE LESSONS

Line Dance Lessons go year-round with Brenda Thomason at Cimarron Center.  For the remainder of 2022, lessons are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.  The cost is $5 per person.

In addition to twice-weekly lessons, Line Dance also holds a Line Dance Social each month from October thru March from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Cimarron Center.  The socials in 2022 are October 13 and December 8.  No social will be held in November.  Tickets are $6 per person and may be purchased at the door.  Everyone is welcome, but no lessons are given at the social.

If you can’t get enough dancing, join this friendly group of dancers for a lively evening of beginners through intermediate line dancing.

The Drama & Comedy Club presents theater entertainment to the community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage and comedy skits at the Cimarron Nightclub. Our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” describes our belief that we welcome everyone to our club where they can find a place to contribute and feel welcome and productive. We have many opportunities for folks who are organizers or who want to expand their creativity. Most of our members are not actors! Some of our members do have acting and directing experience, and they are ready to share their techniques to those members who want to learn new skills. We offer so many opportunities to be involved in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication, and technicians for lights and sound. Do you like to redecorate? Join the construction crew building sets that take you to a governor’s office and campaign, or an old English mansion on a foggy night. FISHING CLUB

The Grand Fishing Club is dedicated to promoting both spin fishing and fly fishing. Club members take an active role not only in the promotion of fishing, but environmental sustainability as well.

Many club members have years of fishing experience and have fished all over the United States, in Canada and other parts of the world. The club sponsors single day fishing trips locally to Lake Pleasant, Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake east of Cave Creek and the Salt River. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course

as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. GARDEN CLUB

We are looking forward to our first meeting of the season on Thursday, October 20 at 8:30 AM in the Cimarron Center.  Jo Miller will be presenting ‘Green Thumb Plant Care’, including plant selection, proper planting and watering, pruning schedules, basic design tips and tips on hiring a contractor/landscaper.  Jo Miller recently retired as an Environmental Program Manager at the city of Glendale where she managed the City’s award-winning conservation and sustainability programs including the four-acre Glendale Xeriscape Demonstration Garden.  Prior to working for the City of Glendale, Jo owned and managed a landscape design business for 20 years. She has provided design consultations for the Phoenix Zoo, local businesses, and hundreds of homeowners in the Phoenix metro area.

The Garden Club meets the 3rd Thursday of the month from October thru May.  Each meeting features an expert speaker addressing a topic of interest to our Low Sonoran Desert Gardeners.  We typically have a field trip in March and brunch in April, and no meeting in December.  Meetings are in the Cimarron Center, check in is at 8:30, and the  meeting starts at 8:50.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly group that welcomes everyone to the joy of gardening in SCG.  Membership is $10.00/year; our year runs from January thru December.  New members joining now and thru the the fall, will have their memberships extended to December 2023.    Membership forms are available in the Sonoran Plaza Club trays, on the Sun City Grand web site, or can be emailed to you by sending a request to the contact person.

GOLF—LADIES GRAND NINERS

The Ladies Grand Niners (LGN) enjoy playing 9 holes of golf each Tuesday, November thru May. Our members have a wide range of skill levels

and are divided into four flights. Desert Springs is our home course; however, we play all four SCG courses during the season. We are affiliated with Arizona Golf Association (AGA). Members are required to have a GHIN handicap index or establish one by playing six 9-hole rounds. We play by USGA rules of golf and expect members to have some golf experience.

In addition to weekly play, we enjoy special games, tournaments, a President’s Cup Championship and social events. We sponsor fundraisers for food banks and Luke Air Force Base “Warm Heart” program.

GOLF—LADIES 18 HOLE LEAGUE

If you enjoy golfing and socializing with other friendly women, then the Grand Ladies 18Hole Golf Association (GLGA) is a perfect fit for you. We are affiliated with the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) and members are required to comply with USGA rules of golf. We play every Tuesday, rotating among the four SCG golf courses.

GLGA is a year-round league with a schedule of shotgun or tee time starts. You can play GLGA only in the winter if you are not here in the summer. We have the opportunity to choose from multiple tee box combinations. You must have a current handicap or establish a handicap within 30 days of joining the league in order to compete in weekly (Tuesday) events. The maximum handicap allowed is 40. In addition to our weekly events, several major tournaments are held throughout the year including a Member-Member, Member-Guest, and League Championship.

PUTTING SCHEDULE

The Men Putters do “their thing” weekly on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:00 PM, on both days, starting in November. Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt both days.

HERE IS A TYPICAL DAILY EVENT

Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.

VOLUNTEERS

Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc.

If you are a golfer, the club is a great way to sharpen your putting skills. If you don’t golf, or no longer golf, the club offers an opportunity to enjoy one of the best parts of the sport in a friendly, yet competitive manner. All skill levels are welcome. To equalize performance results and the receipt of monetary awards, individual handicaps are recalculated weekly.

Participants are flighted based on handicap and generally play with other golfers of similar ability. Our season starts the first week of November and runs through September. GRAND HIKERS

Grand Hikers welcomes current members along with any hikers interested in learning more about the club to attend the regular membership meeting scheduled for Monday, October 10 at 3 p.m. in the Agua Fria room.  Grand Hikers is happy to announce the return to a regular schedule of hikes with at least 5 hikes per week of varying levels of difficulty.  Procedures for participating in hikes remain the same including: 1) hikers are required to register in advance for hikes, 2) there will only be a limit on the number of hikers if required by the hiking venue or the hike leader, and 3) the Grand Hikers waiver is still required.  New and future club members are encouraged to participate in an Introductory Hike before signing up for a regular club hike.  Introductory Hikes are scheduled regularly in order to accommodate new members, or you can contact hikedirector@scghikers.org in order to schedule an Introductory Hike.  Only current members can access the hike sign up list on the website, all others must contact hikedirector@ scghikers.org in order to sign up for a hike. LANGUAGE CLUB

The SCG Language Club would like to increase its foreign language offerings to our residents. We currently offer Spanish, French, Italian, German, and ASL (American Sign Language). We need volunteers in any other languages, to

teach our resident students. We would also like to start ZOOMING CLASSES and need volunteers to ZOOM. If you have an interest to participate, come join us at the Ocotillo Building! LAWN BOWLING

We welcome all levels and ages to join us for a relaxed but competitive game. We have a stateof-the-art bowling green that is arguably the best green in the country and it is situated just behind the tennis courts. MAH JONGG

Mah Jongg is a game of skill, energy, calculation, and includes a degree of luck.  An excellent game to keep your brain active!  Our club offers open play Tuesday afternoons from 12 PM to 4 PM and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Chaparral Center, Hopi room all year long.  We play a $5.00 pie game.  “Go pie” and you may continue to play!

The Sun City Grand Music Club is composed of residents who share a love of music. GRAND PICKLEBALL CLUB

The Grand Pickleball Club is a great place to meet other fun-loving active residents, and get a great workout!  There are 22 pickleball courts located at the Cimarron Center.  The club offers introductory lessons and has ongoing group lessons, clinics and ball-machine drills all designed to help you learn pickleball skills.   Check out the club website at www.

THE SCG Pinochle is Welcoming new members to play Pinochle on Tuesday and Friday starting at 6 PM and ending by 8:30 PM. CHESS

Tucked away in Sun City Grand, three times a week for four hours each day, we play CHESS and forget about everything else.  It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees), and calorieburning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess).

There’s something more about the game, win or lose; and we’d like to share it with you.  You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, Bobbie and Bobby Fishers, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer.

So, check us out, Mate.    Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape.  We usually meet at Cimarron at 11:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Fridays.  This could change, so call us first at 623-293-2884 for Paula, or 203-979-1194 for Marty.

We play in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center every Tuesday from 9 to 11:30AM.  We collect $4

We play every Tuesday at 1:00pm in the Pima Room at the Chaparral Center and every Friday at 6:00pm in the Agua Fria Room at the Cimarron Center.

The Stamp Collector’s Interest Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Pima Room in the Chaparral Center.  Meetings are always open to anyone interested in collecting postage stamps, whether to learn about stamp collecting, discover the worth of an existing collection, or to donate a collection to a non-profit tax-exempt foundation.  Our friendly group will encourage your interest in stamps, whatever it may be.

Special Projects for Community Service include: Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.  Our volunteer knitters and crocheters provide free Knitted Knockers to any woman who wants them.  We have all sizes and can provide special ones for swimming.

Eve’s Place supports victims of domestic, sexual, and teen dating abuse. Our volunteer knitters and crocheters provide hats and other warm clothing items to support Eve’s Place advocacy to the Arizona’s Navajo Nation.

WEDNESDAYS: QUILTING

We are a group of ladies who like to cut up material and put it back together in various creative designs. If you know how to piece/quilt, do come join us on any Wednesday. We have a variety of teachers from nationally recognized members to those who would like to pass along their tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don’t know how to piece/quilt, we have classes for that. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are on the third Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are made by many members, washed, and prepped for breast cancer surgery patients. We also make Quilts of Valor and Quilts for organ donors and the receiving families. There’s always room for finishing those UFOs among fellow members.

If you know what TILA, Swarovski, and Czech Glass are, you know something about beading. If you’d like to learn more - or if you know a lot and want to teach - Beading will welcome you with open arms.

SATURDAYS & THURSDAYS: Weavers and Spinners enjoy working with all kinds of fibers.  We learn about the animals and plants that are the fiber’s source; we prepare the fiber with cleaning, carding, dyeing and blending it.  Fiber is spun into yarn using spindles and traditional and electric spinning wheels.  We utilize many types of looms on which we create fabric for household items, clothing and art pieces.

Our rides will allow you to see remote areas of Arizona in the safe environment of a group activity. We provide an environment to learn the off-road capabilities of our vehicles, off-road driving techniques, the use of GPS devices & maps, and available recovery tools. GRAND GECKOS

Our own masters swim team right here in Grand! We believe in staying fit and building friendships while having fun. Our workouts are fresh, full of variety and will help you get and stay in shape. While you should be able to swim freestyle for at least 10 lengths, you don’t need to know the other strokes to join us at practice. If you are willing to learn, we are there to provide coaching and camaraderie. Our practices have organized sets that are geared from beginner-level swimmers to advanced swimmers and competitors. We focus on technique to improve your strokes, your stamina, your speed and your endurance.

Most/many of you have played horseshoes at picnics, family reunions, etc. With your renting or owning a home in our community, you have the opportunity to play this fun game, whenever you want, for free. The horseshoe pits (5 of them) are always open. You can even play under the lights!! Additionally, there is a horseshoe group/league that plays every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday each week. Generally, at 8 am. This time is adjusted during the year for warmer/cooler temps in summer/winter. We also have league play with 5 other retirement communities in late winter through early spring. We will provide horseshoes for you to use as well as assistance on "pitching" horseshoes if you might need/want. We can also assist in helping you order your own horseshoes when you find out how much fun the game really is. Open to all ladies and men.

In September we resumed our monthly General Meetings at the Church on the Green, 1905 R H Johnson Blvd in Sun City West. We meet on the third Saturday morning each month: Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries at 9:00, and the meetings starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome. After our victory celebration at the Vista Center in August - and with the Primaries behind us - it was time to remember why Republican victories in November are so important.

Our September speaker, Mr. Loren Spivack, the self-proclaimed “Free Market Warrior,” chose for his topic “Why we Fight - Understanding the Modern Left - what they really want.” His style is a combination of education, information and humor. His very timely books are written in the style of Dr. Suess, and he calls himself Dr. Truth!

Our October 15 General Meeting will feature conservative radio host and accomplished speaker Mr. Seth Leibsohn. Mr. Leibsohn is the co-author, with William J Bennett, of “The Fight of Our Lives.” He is a Senior Fellow with the Claremont Institute, the Chairman of NotMYKid, and the recipient of a “Leader of the Year” award from the Arizona Capitol Times for Volunteerism.

Mr. Leibsohn will be using two different sources to help explain how our country has gone down the path it has gone: The first is from a fourpoint Epoch Times article “How to Change a Government.” The second is from Saul Alinsky’s twelve-point “Rules for Radicals.” We need to wake up, grow up, and get ready for the fight of our lives!

SOUND & LIGHTING

The SCG Drama & Comedy Club and the Music Club provides quality theater and musical events

throughout the year to our community. We are fortunate to have many talented residents who volunteer their time and talents and spend many hours of rehearsal to ensure top entertainment for you! And no commute or parking fees!

One of the many things the two clubs have in common in presenting this outstanding live entertainment is sharing the talents of our volunteer Sound and Lighting teams. The teams are often pressed to do shows back-to-back, which puts a demand on this skill set. As the Drama Club and Music Club prepare for a full 2022-2023 season, we are looking for persons who may have an interest in sharing their talents or learn new skills involving these areas. No prior experience or knowledge of sound or lighting equipment is needed. We have volunteers who will train anyone who is interested. Many hands make light work. No pun intended – it is light work! And sound work! But many persons sharing makes easier work.

Description: The group conducts tastings on wines and grapes from countries of the world. There is

Synopsis: Tom is a retired Professor who studies unusual events such as déjà vu, and near-death experiences. One day while at the library, he meets a dazed and confused young Irish woman. Concerned for her welfare, he brings her to his home to meet and stay with his Irish housekeeper. A romance develops between Tom and the young woman. The Occurrence delves into his family’s reaction to the romance, while also providing answers to the young woman’s mysterious past. The World Premier of this mysterial dramedy is not to be missed.

The Grand Drama & Comedy Club’s Cabaret Players returns for a new season beginning with “WITTY SHORTS AND TORTS.” Four short comedies, featuring 15 actors on stage with scripts in hand in a “readers theater” format presented in the relaxed atmosphere of the Cimarron Theater. This season, Joyce Stern Greenberg, is the Artistic Director for Cabaret Players. You will remember Joyce as the creator, writer, and director of last season’s successful Variety Show, and this season she brings her talent and creativity to all three Cabaret Players productions. This November production is produced by Leanne Evans. In Seasons past, Cabaret Players shows usually sells out quickly, so chat with your neighbors and friends, then buy your tickets early, and come enjoy these hilarious skits: Lawyer, Lawyer, Candy Heart, Love Bite, and Knockers.

We have turkeys, turkeys everywhere this month. Ballroom remembers the Turkey Trot fad that was so popular in the early 1900s. Dancers of the time were listening to ragtime and dancing to the Charleston, the Peabody, and, of course, the Turkey Trot which gave way quickly to the Fox Trot.

Knowing the widow’s wealth is untouchable, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium. Contrasting the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the avarice and vanity of “respectable” public figures, it calls into question conventional definitions of sanity while lampooning celebrity culture.

THE LAST HOOTENANNY

In early 2015, David Durham approached the SCG Music Club Board of Directors and proposed doing a “Hootenanny.” The vision was to have members of the Acoustic Instrument Group lead the audience in a gigantic sing-along. The Board gave its approval, and the first Hootenanny took place in April of 2015. It was so successful that the Music Club decided to sponsor a Holiday version that December. Except for three events

that were cancelled due to COVID, the group has done two Hoot’s every year since, and all have sold out quickly. This will be the thirteenth and final Hootenanny. David has decided to hand over the reins to two younger MC members, Mike Kuykendall and Dave Williams, in the hope that they will continue with the sing-along idea in a re-branded format. They are not sure what the new name will be, but pretty sure it will not be called a “Hootenanny.” This Holiday Hootenanny will feature your favorites from the 50’s and 60’s - folk, western, and rock & roll, together with traditional holiday songs. As usual, it will be a spirited event with song lyrics shown on the overhead screens. Accompaniment will be provided by guitars, banjo, bass, fiddle, harmonica and congas. WHAT IS STREAMING?

Let’s take apart the dictionary definition of streaming: it is …

n “a method of transmitting or receiving data (especially video and audio material)

n over a computer network

n as a steady, continuous flow,

n allowing playback to start while the rest of the data is still being received.”

If you’ve used the internet for any period of time, there’s a very good chance you’ve streamed something. Whether it be watching an earlierrecorded meeting from the Sun City Grand website, a “how-to video from YouTube, a recording from Spotify, or through millions of other websites and apps, you have experienced streaming. In fact, streaming makes up some of the internet’s most popular apps and accounts for over one-third of all internet traffic.

When you download a file from the internet, such as an image, video, or program and save it to your device, you’ll need to wait until that file is completely downloaded and processed before you can open it. Streaming, however, lets you see/listen to the file as it is downloading. You don’t have to wait very long to watch your movie or show or to hear the music. When the program or music is over and you close the app, the file is no longer on your device; hence, no need for extensive storage.

To stream, you need access to the internet and a device to “receive” the stream. It can be a computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or television. If you purchased your tv within the last decade, there’s a good chance it is a Smart TV, which means that when you check the TV’s menu with your remote, it will have an “Apps” option to click on. If your TV lacks this option, you can still stream on your TV by purchasing a streaming device, such as a Roku Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, or even many popular gaming consoles, such as an Xbox One. Such a separate device is a one-time purchase which allows you to go online directly from your TV.

Depending on the device, you can browse the web for videos to stream directly from websites, use free video services by clicking on the App from your TV or going to the website from your PC or other device. There are numerous free services such as Pluto, Xumo, Tubi, Crackle, You Tube, Canela TV, DIY Home, Filmrise, BRB, IMDB TV, etc. There are also numerous subscription (for pay) applications. Some of the most popular include Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, You Tube, HBO Now, Fubo, Sling TV, Disney +, Apple TV, Peacock, and Philo.

There are certainly more

advantages than disadvantages to streaming, the major one being is immediate gratification. When you want to watch or listen to content, you don’t have to wait for the day and time the program airs. Click on the app, click on the program and it begins. Another advantage, as mentioned earlier, is that you don’t need additional hard drives or storage space as you would if you downloaded the files. While reducing cost from having cable subscriptions is often touted as a major advantage and generally is, the cost of streaming can be equal to or even more than basic cable if you end up subscribing to numerous paid services to replicate the exact programming you purchased via cable. Because of the loss of viewership on cable, in fact, many cable companies are currently including higher channel counts and more potential bundle discounts.

There are disadvantages to streaming.as well. You can only stream if you’re connected to the internet either via cellular, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet connection. You also need a relatively highspeed internet connection, and you usually need that internet connection every time you watch the program. A downloaded file, in contrast, only needs to be downloaded once for indefinite playback.

Baseball is back in Surprise!

Major League Baseball has announced the Arizona Fall League 2022 schedule. The Surprise Saguaros, one of six teams who compete in the Arizona Fall League, will begin their season on Tuesday, October 4 at Surprise Stadium. The roster for the Surprise Saguaros will include the top prospects from the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates.
