2. Successfully Launch The Falls Restaurant: Easily our top priority as timing and costs have been very challenging for all involved.
n RLB creating a comprehensive launch plan for the Falls including construction, food services, and marketing plans.

n RLB is creating a template to be used with all projects to insure consistency and inclusion of all necessary items.

n RLB is creating a “Statement of Work” supporting planning elements for the Desert Springs Restaurant and Golf Facilities.

n Mediterranean Room in Palm Center is being transformed to a “Zoom Room” for hybrid (in-person and/or Zoom) meetings. Completion date targeted for mid-September allowing all residents to watch and take part in the budget meetings scheduled in September and October.
n Conducted a water loss survey for the Village Center fountain. Confirmed that the fountain needs to be removed and steps are being taken to reroute water for sustainability of the remaining water feature.
n Initiated removal of turf grass and replaced it with granite and shrubs near Poker and Glass Arts building to provide residents small samples of what to expect following turf removal.
n Planning conversion of turf grass to artificial grass on corners of Remington/Sunrise and Clearwater/ Sunrise to show residents results of using artificial turf as replacement.
5. Increase Transparency and Focus on Culture: Two years of Covid restrictions has empowered us to improve the opportunity for interaction between Board Members and our fellow residents.

3. Gain Alignment of Priorities of Future Projects: Balancing available resources and future needs of the community can be challenging. It is imperative that the Board provides staff and the community a prioritized list of those planned projects, so a successful outcome is achievable.
The summer transition from the rye grass to Bermuda grass was great this year. The Superintendents and their staff really work hard all year long to provide the best conditions possible. The aerification process was done on the greens of each golf course which takes several weeks to heal (we appreciate your patience). The fairways were aerified and top-dressed as well. These practices are essential to providing great conditions in the future even though they are an inconvenience at the time for golfers. Again, we appreciate your patience.
Staff has been working with the Arizona Golf Association to re-rate the golf courses. They have re-rated Cimarron, Desert Springs and Granit Falls South. Since Granite Falls North will be renovated next summer, it will not be re-rated at this time. These ratings will be available shortly and shared with the golfers. As you can see, there is a lot going on. Thank you for your continued support of the golf courses.

Staff is really excited for the new tee boxes that were installed on the Cimarron and Desert Springs golf courses. For the most part, each hole constructed a new tee box in front of the current gold tees and reconstructed/moved the current orange tees. The tees are expected to be ready to play coming out of overseeding in the fall.
The golf courses had their annual Course Consulting Service by Brian Whitlark with the United States Golf Association (USGA). This is where staff can go over past, current, and future projects and have an outside point-ofview on our current conditions/practices. We are awaiting the results of the report and will share it with the community.

Water is a very important topic in Arizona and especially in golf. The golf courses in Arizona use about 2% of the state’s water and the golf courses have an economic impact of about $4.6 billion. Here at Sun City Grand,

The Board of Directors and staff have been very proactive to reduce water by improving the irrigation system (heads/swing joints), new satellite controllers for better flexibility, new pump stations, improving maintenance practices, not overseeding roughs, changing out the grass on the greens to not have to overseed and we are in the process of selective turf removal. All these items combined help keep our golf courses in compliance with the state. Year-to-date, the courses are currently 34.89 acre feet ahead of budget. An acre foot of water is equal to 325,851 gallons.

The practice of mental hygiene is something that can be easily incorporated into anyone’s life—and it doesn’t really cost anything. By adopting the following strategies, you can shift to new habits that improve your overall well-being.
If your mind is filled with ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) that run rampant, it’s likely making you feel miserable, stressed, anxious, or depressed. Unfortunately, ANTs are very common— especially as social and political discord continue to abound, the COVID-19 pandemic still looms, and the nightly news seems to be filled with one tragedy after another. All of these can trigger the emotional centers in our brain, making those ANTs feel difficult to Thecontrol.goodnews is that you can get the upper hand with them by learning to challenge the ANTs that are infecting your mind. Here’s how: For each ANT you have, write it down and answer the following questions about it: n Is it true? n Is it absolutely true—with 100% certainty? n How do you feel when you have this thought? n How would you feel if you didn’t have this thought? Then, flip the ANT you started with to its opposite and see if this new thought isn’t actually truer—and more accurate— than the ANT is.

During these hot summer months, it is not uncommon to spot a few garage doors that are open a couple of feet to let the heat out. If the outside temps were cooler than the interior garage heat that idea would be a winner. Once the sun goes down, we often see people walking their dogs and have left their garage doors open. We recommend closing of the garage doors even when you are simply walking around the Inblock.2001 our C.H.A.P.S.* organization was formed as a means to provide an extra element of safety for our community. We are now approximately 140 members strong, and can always use more volunteers to help keep Sun City Grand a most desirable community in which to live. *C.H.A.P.S.: Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service C.H.A.P.S. MEETS THE 4TH TUESDAY EVERY MONTH (except December) AT 1:30 P.M. Ahh, yes, the “dog days of summer” are upon us. This is a quote we often times hear while watching our favorite baseball teams perform in the days after the mid-summer classic known as the All-Star Game. The announcers also refer to the players having to “grind it out” during these “dog days”. The members of the volunteer group of C.H.A.P.S.* also can relate to “grinding it out” during these “dog days” of our summer months of heat, heat, and more heat. We pride ourselves in the commitment it takes to get up at 6 a.m. to carry out the duties of a segment of our group known as Vacation Watch patrollers. By the time we have walked around 20 to 30 homes in 100-degree heat to check for unlocked doors and windows, it becomes commonplace to think of a cool down reward. This patroller often times thinks of only one thing: Oh, to be a kid again and be able to run through that first inviting sprinkler. But, as some shared the other day, heading off to your favorite grocery store for iced coffee and donuts after serving your community for a couple of hours isn’t a bad reward either. If you are one of the lucky ones that were able to escape for the summer without taking advantage of the C.H.A.P.S.* Vacation Watch program, keep us in mind for your next vacation. There are forms available at www. suncitygrand.com and also in the membership office at the Palm Center on Remington. The other segment of our C.H.A.P.S.* group is called Evening Patrol. Due to the fact that Grand is comprised of 9,800 homes, it would be impossible to drive by every home each evening we are out on patrol. Therefore, Grand is divided into 6 zones. Each patrol group consists of 2 patrollers covering one zone. We stop at the homes with open garage doors, we report street lights that are out, and we report any suspicious activity to the Surprise Police.
We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. If you reread the above, you will note that the word “estimate” is used frequently. None of us have a crystal ball. If we happen to project expenses accurately, it is in part because we are lucky. So what happens if expenses are higher than budgeted? Where does the money come from? n We could have a special assessment. SCG has NEVER had one, and unlikely that our Board of Directors would support this. n We could borrow money. Again, NEVER been done and likely not supported. n We could delay discretionary expenses. n We could “raid the piggy bank”. In some past years, we have generated surplus, i.e. revenues have exceeded expenses. Prior years profits could be used to cover current years deficiency.
In any event SCG financial position is strong, so no concern for special assessments or borrowing to balance the Thebudget.Budget process determines next year’s assessment, so this process should be of interest to all members. Some preparers of budgets advocate for a “zero based budget”. Under this strategy, the budget is prepared from scratch. No considerations are given the prior period income, and expenses. To me, that approach is a recipe for disaster. Disregarding history makes it difficult (maybe impossible) to accurately estimate future income and expenses.

For SCG, we start by estimating next year’s expenses. Department heads are asked to estimate future costs and are also asked to justify those costs. Some costs, such as utilities and insurance, are unrelated to any operating departments; so the task of estimating those costs falls to the Accounting Department. Vendors and consultants are asked to weigh in on such costs. Perhaps the largest such cost is the contribution to the Reserve for Repairs and Replacements. That fund is critical for the Associations Viability. The concept is that we set aside enough funds so that when an asset needs to be replaced or repaired, we have enough money to do it. We engage an independent consultant who annually reviews our Reserve

RENTER FEES Effective July 1, 2022, the renter activity card fee increased to the following: n 1-3 month lease = $200 each card n 4-6 month lease = $300 each card n 7-12 month lease = $500 each card
The Sun City Grand Governing Documents require that a rental lease be for no less than 30 days. Some Airbnb and VRBO ads list daily and/ or weekly rates, indicating the owner is willing to rent for days or weeks, rather than the 30-day minimum. If you have such an ad, please revise your ad to include a “30-day minimum” clause. Sun City Grand homes may be leased only in their entirety. No fraction or portion may be leased. A renter is not a “guest” of the homeowner and cannot be signed up as a guest at the Fitness Centers. Per the Rules & Regulations, renters have no privileges to use SCG amenities unless they purchase the renter activity card at the Membership Department. Purchase of the card is not required; however, if renters do not obtain a renter card, they do not have privileges to use our amenities other than playing golf at the public rate.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB The Drama & Comedy Club presents theater entertainment to the community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage and comedy skits at the Cimarron Nightclub. Our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” describes our belief that we welcome everyone to our club where they can find a place to contribute and feel welcome and productive. We have many opportunities for folks who are organizers or who want to expand their creativity. Most of our members are not actors! Some of our members do have acting and directing experience, and they are ready to share their techniques to those members who want to learn new skills. Line Dance Lessons go year-round with Brenda Thomason at Cimarron Center. For the remainder of 2022, lessons are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $5 per Inperson.addition to twice-weekly lessons, Line Dance also holds a Line Dance Social each month from October thru March from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Cimarron Center. The socials in 2022 are October 13 and December 8. No social will be held in November. Tickets are $6 per person and may be purchased at the door. Everyone is welcome, but no lessons are given at the social. If you can’t get enough dancing, join this friendly group of dancers for a lively evening of beginners through intermediate line dancing. The Ladies Grand Niners (LGN) enjoy playing 9 holes of golf each Tuesday, November thru May. Our members have a wide range of skill levels and are divided into four flights. Desert Springs is our home course; however, we play all four SCG courses during the season. We are affiliated with Arizona Golf Association (AGA). Members are required to have a GHIN handicap index or establish one by playing six 9-hole rounds. We play by USGA rules of golf and expect members to have some golf experience. In addition to weekly play, we enjoy special games, tournaments, a President’s Cup Championship and social events. The club sponsors single day fishing trips locally to Lake Pleasant, Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake east of Cave Creek and the Salt River. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. The Grand Fishing Club is dedicated to promoting both spin fishing and fly fishing. Club members take an active role not only in the promotion of fishing, but environmental sustainability as well. Many club members have years of fishing experience and have fished all over the United States, in Canada and other parts of the world.
GARDEN CLUB We are looking forward to our first meeting of the season on Thursday, October 20 at 8:30 AM in the Cimarron Center. Our topic will be ‘Green Thumb Plant Care’, including plant selection, proper planting and watering, pruning schedules, basic design tips and tips on hiring a contractor/ Thelandscaper.Garden Club meets the 3rd Thursday of the month from October thru May. Each meeting features an expert speaker addressing a topic of interest to our Low Sonoran Desert Gardeners. We typically have a field trip in March and brunch in April, and no meeting in December. Meetings are in the Cimarron Center, check in is at 8:30, and the meeting starts at 8:50. We pride ourselves on being a friendly group that welcomes everyone to the joy of gardening in SCG. Membership is $10.00/year; our year runs from January thru December. New members joining now and thru the the fall, will have their memberships extended to December 2023. GOLF—150 GOLF CLUB Par–3 golf at Sun City Grand. The co–ed 150 Golf Club plays nine holes from tees 150 yards or less from the pin Sunday afternoon. Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt both days.
The Men’s Nine Hole Golf Club is comprised of fun loving, supportive golfers of all skill levels who enjoy the game of golf. If you love the game, but 18 holes is too much, this club is for you. We offer you alternating week guaranteed shotgun starts on Mondays at 12:30 or 3:00 (your choice), and alternating week tee times from 12:00 and 2:00. Free range balls, once-a-month team games e.g. Scramble, etc. Also, periodic free golfing clinics with our resident golf pro, prize tournaments, and annual free hot dog/chili day. GLGA 18Hole League is affiliated with the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) and members are required to comply with USGA rules of golf. We play every Tuesday, rotating among all four SCG golf courses. GLGA is a year-round league, with a schedule of shotgun or tee times offered. You must have a current handicap or, establish a handicap within 30 days of joining the league in order to compete in weekly (Tuesday) play events. The maximum handicap allowed on each golf course is 40. In addition to our weekly play events, several major tournaments are held throughout the year, including a Member-Member, Member-Guest, League Championship. The Couples Putting Club is a co-ed charter club at Sun City Grand in Surprise, AZ. We are a putting only club that plays on an 18-hole course that is setup differently each month. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for experienced golfers and novices alike to compete on the putting green and at the same time, have fun and make new friends. Above all, we want our members to enjoy themselves while utilizing our wonderful putting facilities at the Cimarron Center. Grand Hikers will resume a regular schedule of hikes in October 2022, but will offer some shorter/ easier hikes through September. These summer hikes meet at 5:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted on the hike list, and often include an optional group breakfast following the hike. While the general membership meetings are typically held the first Monday of the month, the October general membership meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 10, 2022, due to an out-of-town hiking trip to the Big Sur area in early October. Paper Arts and Memories – This is the time to stock up on our handmade cards. Our Card Boutique has only been open one day a month in the summer. Our card boutique will be open on Sept 12th We will resume with weekly sales on Monday, October 3rd. Summer is a great time to join our Club. We have lots of space and no lines for the various tools, and we are still scheduling classes throughout the summer.

The SCG Men’s 18 - Hole Golf Club welcomes resident golfers to join our club and compete for bragging rights and prize money in weekly tournaments. We play our tournaments on Wednesdays under USGA Rules of Golf and use the USGA’s Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN) for tracking handicaps. Participants are flighted based on handicap and generally play with other golfers of similar ability. Our season starts the first week of November and runs through September. The club currently has over 400 members and we invite you to join our roster.

Needlework—SpecialTUESDAYS: Projects for Community Service Knittedinclude:Knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. Our volunteer knitters and crocheters provide free Knitted Knockers to any woman who wants them. We have all sizes and can provide special ones for swimming. Eve’s Place supports victims of domestic, sexual, and teen dating abuse. Our volunteer knitters and crocheters provide hats and other warm clothing items to support Eve’s Place advocacy to the Arizona’s Navajo Nation.
Quilting—WEDNESDAYS: We are a group of ladies who like to cut up material and put it back together in various creative designs. If you know how to piece/quilt, do come join us on any Wednesday. We have a variety of teachers from nationally recognized members to those who would like to pass along their tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don’t know how to piece/ quilt, we have classes for that. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are on the third Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are made by many members, washed, and prepped for breast cancer surgery patients. We also make Quilts of Valor and Quilts for organ donors and the receiving families. There’s always room for finishing those UFOs among fellow members.

SCG Table Tennis Club prides itself on its friendly welcoming “personality” for all levels of table tennis play. Our sport combines healthy fun, low impact aerobic exercise that’s gentle on the joints, and excellent eye hand coordination practice. We play year-round in Cimarron’s airconditioned clubhouse. While we are passionate about our love for this sport, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and every day’s play is peppered with lots of good-natured laughs. We offer weekly robot training for serving and volley practice, with notification by club email of the current robot schedule. The roads we travel range from “easy” to “moderate” to “difficult.” The rides are for all types of four wheel drive vehicles (No ATV’s that’s another group). Our rides will allow you to see remote areas of Arizona in the safe environment of a group activity. We provide an environment to learn the off-road capabilities of our vehicles, off-road driving techniques, the use of GPS devices & maps, and available recovery tools. The horseshoe pits (5 of them) are always open. You can even play under the lights!! Additionally, there is a horseshoe group/league that plays every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday each week. Generally, at 8 am. This time is adjusted during the year for warmer/cooler temps in summer/winter. We also have league play with 5 other retirement communities in late winter through early spring. We will provide horseshoes for you to use as well as assistance on “pitching” horseshoes if you might need/want. The SCG Drama & Comedy Club and the Music Club provides quality theater and musical events throughout the year to our community. We are fortunate to have many talented residents who volunteer their time and talents and spend many hours of rehearsal to ensure top entertainment for you! And no commute or parking fees! One of the many things the two clubs have in common in presenting this outstanding live entertainment is sharing the talents of our volunteer Sound and Lighting teams. The teams are often pressed to do shows back-to-back, which puts a demand on this skill set. From operating trains, painting buildings, decorating and landscaping, track maintenance, electrical service and repair, to public relations and more…. there is literally something for everyone. While most members own and operate their own trains, it is not a requirement to join the group. Our primary function is operating and maintaining the Model Railroad Park for the enjoyment of our members, residents and visitors, young and old alike. WINE TASTING Interest Group Description: The group conducts tastings on wines and grapes from countries of the world. There is an introductory educational preview of the topic, followed by the wine tasting done in an informal atmosphere. Light foods and finger desserts are available. Members have the opportunity to learn about wine and find new varietals to enjoy. They also meet and befriend fellow wine enthusiasts.

The Sun City Grand Drama & Comedy Club opens its new season with The Occurrence, written by playwright Robert O. Davis. This will be a WORLD PREMIER, a first for the Drama & Comedy Club. Synopsis: Tom is a retired Professor who studies unusual events such as déjà vu, and near-death experiences. One day while at the library, he meets a dazed and confused young Irish woman. Concerned for her welfare, he brings her to his home to meet and stay with his Irish housekeeper. A romance develops between Tom and the young woman. The Occurrence delves into his family’s reaction to the romance, while also providing answers to the young woman’s mysterious past. The World Premier of this mysterial dramedy is not to be missed.

Getting rid of unused Apps —Go to Settings > System > Storage. Tap Show more categories > Cleanup recommendations and choose what apps you have not used in a long time. Minimize every open Window except the Active one in use the desktop gets cluttered with too many open windows; you can quickly minimize them all except the one you are currently working in. Go to Settings> System> Multitasking > check the box Title bar window shake. Just click the title bar of the window you want to remain open to select it, hold the mouse down and move the window back and forth quickly (shaking it), and all other open windows will minimize, leaving only the one you've shaken

n Print Screen—to capture your entire screen, tap the Print Screen (PrtScn) key. Your screenshot will be copied to the clipboard. Then open an image editing tool (such as Microsoft Paint), paste the screenshot into the app and save the file from there. You can also set the PrtScn button to open the Snip & Sketch tool by going to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and toggle on Use the PrtScn button to open screen snipping under Print Screen Shortcut.
n The Snipping Tool—not on the list of apps in the Start menu but is still there via the search bar. Type “snipping tool” into the Search Bar. Last month Cappie discussed: the design changes (new Default Start Menu, New User Interface, end of Live Tiles), the improved Microsoft Store including the use of Android Apps in Windows, replacement of Skype by the Teams App, increased tablet features etc. Here are some additional new features available in Windows 11: Start Menu—Most people are familiar with accessing the Start menu by clicking the Windows icon on the Taskbar at the bottom lefthand corner of the screen. There is also a lesser known second Start menu that makes accessing important features like the Control Panel, the Command Prompt, and the Task Manager much easier. You can access the menu by right clicking the Windows Start icon or by pressing the Windows key + X Save Battery Life —To save your battery when it’s running low, you have the option to control which apps are running in the background. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Tap Battery saver and then adjust when battery saver temporarily limits getting notifications and other background activities. Show File Extensions in File Explorer —By default, Microsoft hides file extensions. Many times, it is necessary to look for specific file types, especially when dealing with photos.

Surprise City Council approved funding to support the Neighborhood Grant Program that provides eligible neighborhoods with small grants to fund neighborhood events, functions or community improvements.

Drop off recycling Surprise offers residents a drop-off recycling option to help ensure items are being recycled. Surprise has three locations to take material to throughout the valley, each of which the recycled goods do get recycled. By staffing our drop-off location, we have built relationships with the vendors to ensure all material is 100% clean. There is a positive impact on both the City and the vendor by limiting the sorting the vendor has to do and helps in making sure the material will continue to be recycled and not diverted to the landfill.
