CONTENTS A Community Garden for Sun City Grand

“Let’s Get Growing”

Submitted by Long Range Planning Committee —Community Garden Subcommittee

The Sun City Grand Board of Directors heard a presentation by Elli Hall and Deb Lerew about the prospects for a Community Garden in Sun City Grand. It was well received, and a subcommittee of the Long Range Planning Committee was formed to begin the investigative stage of a Community Garden. A Community Garden consists of plots of land worked by groups of people. The plots can be individually worked or communally worked. The garden would be governed by written rules and managed by volunteers.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

Make Putting Fun Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

One of the most important elements to lowering your scores is to be a better putter. I am sure that you have heard of the old adage, “Drive for show and putt for dough.” If you can improve your putting, you can generally improve your round/score. How many putts should you take per round? That is a very difficult question to answer and there are many factors that are involved; such as how many greens in regulation you hit or what your average score is. My suggestion for the average golfer is to try and stay under 36 putts which is 2 putts per hole. According to the PGA Tour yearto-date statistics through July 2021, the number 1 ranked putter that has the least number of putts per round is Cameron Smith with an average of 27.74. The 200th ranked putter is Bubba Watson with an average of 29.84 putts per round. Practicing putting can become boring for some and that is why more golfers prefer to hit a driver on the range versus hitting putts on the putting green. One way to practice putting is to make it fun. A great way to do this is to practice with another person and play putting games. Below are 10

two very common putting games that people play.

Stroke Play

This is a good multi-player game, but it's hard to recover from a bad hole. n Flip a tee to determine starting order. n Play 9 or 18 holes with one or more competitors. n Count your strokes. (Par is two) n Fewest strokes wins the competition.

Seven/Eleven

From seven to eleven, you only score on sinks: • Score -1 for a three putt. • Score +1 for a sink--even if you have less than seven as a result of three-putting. • If you are closest to the hole: n You get no points. n Neither does anyone else n You have the honors for the next hole. n

Strategy Notes:

When your opponent is at 6, putt from close in. To get to 7, they have to putt closer without sinking. n When your opponent is playing sinks, putt from farther away, because three putts are costlier. n

This is a two-part game, where the first to eleven wins. There is one set of rules for getting to seven, another for getting to eleven. n Flip a tee to determine starting order. n Leadoff player picks a hole and a starting position. n From zero to seven, you can score on sinks and closest to the hole: • Score +1 for closest to the hole • Score +2 for a sink • Score -1 for a three putt • You have to get to seven points exactly. If you go over, you start over (from zero). • Player who was closest to the hole (or was the last one to sink) has the honors for the next hole.

If you need help with your putting or any other elements of your game, we have a team of qualified Golf Professionals that can help you shoot lower scores. FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

PRINCIPLES OF

ENDURANCE n

Stroke volume (How much blood is pumped per heartbeat)

Heart contraction (The force at which blood is pumped from the heart)

n

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

Let’s take a look at the fitness principle of physical endurance. Merriam-Webster defines endurance as “the ability to withstand hardship or adversity; the ability to sustain a prolonged stressful effort or activity”. Endurance is also explained as the ability to sustain power or effort over a period of time. What determines physical endurance? n

Endurance is measured by heart rate (how many times your heart beats per minute)

Most of us know that getting physical activity helps to improve heart health. Afterall, the heart is a muscle, and needs exercise like other muscles of the body. The predominant belief for improving heart health is some type of cardiovascular exercise, aka “cardio”. But by incorporating resistance/ strength training into your regular workouts, along with cardiovascular exercise, you tackle all three determinants for improved heart function.

fitness routine. Increased muscle strength raises the ability of the veins and heart to contract with more force, improving blood pre-load into the heart, thereby pumping more blood and oxygen into the rest of the body. Both cardiorespiratory training and resistance training will achieve this. Of the three energy systems our body utilizes to perform movement, it is the oxidative

system that is predominate in energy expenditure over 2 minutes long. Also known as the aerobic (with oxygen) system, the body uses fats and carbohydrates combined with oxygen to manufacture energy for continued output. Through more efficient delivery of oxygen throughout the body, the aerobic system ensures the ability to maintain exertion for extended periods of time.

As mentioned above, stroke volume and heart contractility are other measurable components of endurance. How do we improve heart contraction and stroke volume? Adopt strength training into your

Life Plan community in July, became interested in the group after hearing about it from Dick.

Drop by The Colonnade on any morning, except Sunday, and you’ll likely see a group of men gathered, drinking coffee and enjoying each other’s company. These men, warmly known as The Stud Farm, have been gathering together for more than a decade and, while the name may catch your attention, these boys, err men, are just looking for a chance to socialize amongst friends and neighbors at The Colonnade. According to long-time resident Dick Malcolmson, the group originally started on his driveway. “A group of guys started meeting at my casita about 12 years ago, where everybody would bring their dogs,” Dick said. “It was very informal. We met that way for the first couple of years.” Over the years, the group grew, and resident’s furry friends crossed the Rainbow Bridge, so they moved inside to the library.

“For me it is the replacement for the morning “bull” session around the watercooler when we were working,” said resident Doug Schuyler, who moved into The Colonnade in 2014. “I remember we’d all get together and talk about what happened last night for a few minutes, then we’d go do our jobs.” For most of the gentlemen who regularly attend, it’s part of what makes The Colonnade special, which includes a focus on socialization, a key tenet of the Masterpiece Living® lifestyle that Sun Health Communities follows. “It’s the only socialization I get on a regular basis, as I am by myself after my wife died years ago,” Dick adds. “I’d describe it as therapy and I think it contributes to the positive psychology we have around here, too.” Bob Colli, who moved to the

“My wife died in October and I was looking for a new place to live,” Bob said. Dick talked about The Colonnade and he told me to come over. I had checked it out years ago, but we were not ready then. I got together with the guys here, started listening to their conversation and talking to them. You pick up a lot of information and it is great way to start my day.” The men are always polite, and while they may talk about gossip and rumors, the discussion often centers around helpful information, too. “One of our members is very familiar with the area and where to go to buy things,” Doug said. “Anyone can ask him where to buy anything. He is very likely able to tell me what store to go to and the differential on pricing. You also learn about dining establishments, even what type of golf cart to buy as well as referrals to doctors and dentists. You benefit from the shared experience of a group of folks that may have gone through that same situation before.”

to me,” said Dick. “Almost everybody has at least a bachelor’s degree, and I’d say more than half have a graduate degree. We have a doctor who comes regularly. There is a Ph.D. physics professor who joins us. We have had one judge and a ton of retired military, including two Navy admirals.” Anyone from The Colonnade can join. Yet, there are a few “catches.” “When a new person comes, we have a long-standing tradition that he has to buy the next round of free coffee for everyone,” Doug said. Dick added, “we also have a ‘no politics, no religion rule.’ It’s something the group does strongly believe in and most people respect it. Women are welcome and we occasionally have some who sit down with us.” Earlier this year, the men got matching t-shirts. And, every third Friday is dubbed “Nosh Day,” thanks to The Colonnade’s Rabbi Mindie Snyder, from Sun Health’s Spiritual Life department, who brings the group bagels. “This is a great group of a guys to be with, Bob said.” I come every day, unless I have a class to go to.”

Over the years, the group has changed a bit, but also has remained somewhat the same.

And, for Dick, “I think the best part of the Stud Farm is it’s a good source of information, companionship and socialization for the start of the day. Especially for those of us who are single.”

“The diversity of the backgrounds is really interesting

A great favorite with the locals, El Rancho has been making delicious Mexican food for over 30 years, offering a menu that includes super-affordable daily specials and some yummy American options. Get out of the heat and come with us!

HART PRAIRIE SCENIC DRIVE & 1899 BAR & GRILL OCTOBER 8 | FRIDAY | $119 Join us this early-fall for a Kindred Tours Classic! We’ll journey north to Flagstaff and kick it off with a fabulous lunch at Northern Arizona University’s culinary institute—the 1899 Bar & Grill—named for NAU’s founding year. Housed in a historic building with the original copper fireplace, this decidedly elegant eatery offers an award-winning dining experience. We’ll be offered a limited menu that is sure to please everyone, and lunch is included! Later we’ll head north on Highway 180, better known as the San Francisco Peaks Scenic Road, one of Arizona’s most beautiful byways. With Arizona’s highest mountains dominating the landscape, we’ll journey through rolling meadows, slowly transitioning to stands of golden aspens, which later become a forest dense enough to canopy this heart-stopping backroad experience. Don’t miss it! FALL LEAVES IN OAK CREEK CANYON & LUNCH AT THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN INN OCTOBER 15 | FRIDAY | $119 How fortunate we are that Arizona’s first AllAmerican Road, the Red Rock Scenic Byway, is just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from the Valley, and ours to enjoy with every changing season! Often called “The Museum Without Walls,” the Red Rock Scenic Byway in Sedona, Arizona is visited by tourists from around the world. And if that’s not enough, this famous byway leads into Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Road. Rated a Top 5 Most Scenic Drive by Rand McNally, the Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Road is most spectacular during the fall season. We’ll enjoy this incredible journey, and then stop for a delicious lunch at the old Butterfly Garden Inn, where we’ll be offered a limited menu to include a big juicy cheeseburger, a turkey, avocado, bacon, cheddar sandwich on fresh baked bread, or a veggie burger with all the trimmings—and it’s all included. Later we’ll travel the high-country switchbacks, enjoying the scenery and stopping for photo opportunities. We’ll make our way to Flagstaff and take a minute to explore the historic downtown area before hightailing it for home. This popular tour fills quickly—don’t miss it!

THE BASICS OF MIXING LIVE SOUND

ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.

Meets 4 times on Mon/Fri 10/4, 10/8, 10/11, 10/18 9:00 AM–12:30 PM

TONY SPATA

LARRY DIRKSEN

HOME AUTOMATION BASICS FEE $10

Sound Engineers work in theaters, concert halls and sporting arenas, radio, TV and recording studios, meeting rooms, houses of worship, hotels, casinos and night clubs, and many more places. They capture, manipulate and transmit voices, music and other sounds to audiences small and large, both nearby and far away. This course will focus on the five most important aspects of mixing live sound for theater and concert applications. Participants should be comfortable with the basic operation of typical sound systems including choosing sound sources and deploying microphones, mixers, amplifiers and speakers. Gain setting strategy, gating, equalization, compression and effects will all get detailed attention. We will include some theory but most of the course will place heavy emphasis on “hands on” learning. At the conclusion of the course, participants can expect to have a good understanding of how audio engineers go about shaping sound for directors and audiences. For those interested in putting this knowledge to work, there will be an opportunity to join the sound team for a production with the Music Club or the Drama and Comedy Club.

SEA WATER DESALINATION JEFF GIBBS

Meets 4 times on Thur 10/14—11/4 4:00–5:30 PM FEE $30

The year 2021 has been a year of considerable concern with regard to the adequacy of our water supplies – both in Sun City Grand and in Arizona as a whole. Yet most of the focus has been on how to get us thru just the next 3-5 years without severe water restrictions. There has been little focus to date regarding the need for the long-term, structural changes which will be needed to ensure water sustainability for our community in the next decade and beyond. One of the solutions which has been suggested is the creation of large-scale infrastructure to desalinate ocean sea water for use in supporting our life here in the desert. This course will enable Sun City Grand members and other interested parties to understand how this solution might assist us in achieving long-term sustainable water supplies: Session I–Water Sustainability and The Colorado River Basin - This session will provide an overview of the current water issues in the Colorado River Basin and the Valley of the Sun in Arizona. Session II–This session will explore the various solutions which have been proposed to ensure our long-term water future, focusing on the possibility of sea water desalination. Session III–This session will provide an overview of how other countries and other states have deployed this solution as a part of their portfolio of water supply options. Session IV–The final session will take a look at activities to date to consider this solution here in Arizona along with suggesting some of the challenges which would need to be overcome for its widespread implementation.

DR. EDELITA JAMIS

FEE $10

This class will bust common myths about type 2 diabetes mellitus, such as “you can never get off insulin” or “once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you have diabetes forever”. This disease has affected so many Americans who are now relying on multiple medications, including insulin. Yet, the complications of this chronic condition long-term are not slowing down at all. The reason is that there has always been a disconnect in how we understand diabetes. This class will show you how people with diabetes are now gaining control of their disease, leading to reduction or even discontinuation of medications, including insulin. * See Smoothie and Sandwich Duo class in November * RESILIENCE OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS RABBI SHELDON MOSS Meets 2 times on Mon 10/18 - 10/25 11:30 AM–1:00 PM FEE $20

Israel has always sat at the crossroads of major civilizations. This strategic location fostered international commerce and communication… as well as collisions between super powers that periodically left the nation feeling torn apart and broken. Ancient Prophets guided their people through calamities and collective trauma by first examining the social conditions that made Ancient Israel vulnerable to attack. The Prophets then inspired their nation with positive visions of a common future.

Poetry, like all art, is a shared experience, and it depends on the readers' personal reactions and thoughts to give it meaning and make it come alive. So no poetry lectures will be given here, no attempts to beat a confession from a poem to find out "what it really means." We will use a shared inquiry method of discussion and learn from each other, discovering some surprises, some laughter and fun, and even some new insights as we explore together and celebrate the power, the beauty, and the magic and mischief of words. JAN CLEERE

Meets 1 time on Zoom: Tue 11/16 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

FEE $15

When the US Army ordered troops into Arizona Territory in the 19th century to protect and defend newly established settlements, military men often brought their wives and families, particularly officers who might be stationed in the west for years. Most of the women were from refined, eastern-bred families with little knowledge of the territory. Their letters, diaries, and journals from their years on army posts reveal untold hardships and challenges. They learned to cope with the sparseness, the heat, sickness, and danger, including wildlife they never imagined. These women were bold, brave, and compassionate. They became an integral part of military posts that peppered the West and played an important role in civilizing the untamed frontier. Combined with research tracing their movements from post to post, their personal stories personify the tragedies and triumphs many early military wives endured.

Original verse came to us nonstop via the Internet, social media and through traditional book publishing avenues. Billy Collins, (Poet Laureate 2001-2003 and distinguished professor at Lehman College/ City University of NY) said this resurgence of poetic creativity happened “Because poetry tells the story of the human heart.” Poetry gives us stories we need every day. This program will address examples of modern American poetry including Billy Collins and Joyce Carol Oates with a nod to the influential and highly experimental style of Emily Dickinson.

I will talk about events in Germany that led up to the Holocaust, the horrors my parents witnessed and end my presentation on how their parenting styles influenced me as I grew to adulthood and who I am now. Questions will be welcomed at any time during my presentation.

SOUND & LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”

The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-2148280 (Lighting)
