Ocean City Brewing Company
O O
cean City Brewing Company started as a joint collaboration between Joshua Shores and Brewmaster Mark Fesche. Josh is an Ocean City native, born in nearby Salisbury and has lived in Ocean City on and off since 1974. Mark was born and raised in Maryland and started his craft in Oregon in 1992. He has helped establish breweries in Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and now brings his experience and expertise back home. Someone once told us that there is nothing better than drinking a good craft beer, enjoying good food, and being surrounded by good people. That’s why we wanted to bring this experience to Ocean City. “Good Beer, Good Food, Good People” is now our motto. Ocean City Brewing Company is located at 5509 Coastal Highway on the corner of 56th Street. We’re a craft brewery with a full service family restaurant, bar, and gift shop. Our brewing tanks can be viewed through oversized windows from our bar and restaurant while you enjoy a great meal and a refreshing craft beer. We have several styles of craft beers on tap, from light lagers to high gravity dark beers to appeal to almost every taste bud. Our restaurant serves many homemade brewpub favorites from gourmet pizza & flatbreads to smash burgers, our signature egg rolls, house sausage & brats, and hearty pot pies. The bar consists of large Oktoberfest style tables for a great social atmosphere that you don’t want to miss. Also, pick up your favorite craft beer to go, as well as specialty apparel and other great memorabilia in our gift shop. Please come enjoy the Ocean City Brewing Company experience! We’re open year round. For more information on Ocean City Brewing Company please visit us ONLINE www.ocbrewingcompany.com

hen the kids are ready for a break from the beach, you will find Ocean City offers a wealth of exciting activities the whole family can enjoy. From kiddie rides and games to Ziplines and Parasails, there truly is something for everyone. For the kid in all of us, the water parks offer day-long spills and thrills, as well as safe and fun play areas for the “little” visitors. Are you ready to dry off and shake the sand from your shoes? There are go-karts and mini golf, laser tag and paintball. Adventure awaits on the Pirate Ships, at a Wild West Show or even at the Discovery Center. Explore another side of O.C. on a nature cruise or bird watch along the Pocomoke River. Visit the wild ponies of Assateague or slip over to the Salisbury Zoo. Whale and dolphin watching are year-round treats and you might catch a glimpse on a thrilling speed boat ride! Looking for more of a birds’ eye view? Fly high on a bi-plane ride or soar through the air on a parasail. When you’ve seen all the things you can do from a higher perspective, you’ll have your next outing already planned. Take time to explore O.C.’s world famous Boardwalk, where there are surry bikes, segways and train rides, haunted houses, museums, carnival games, arcades, kiddie and thrill rides. A stroll or a run are much more pleasant with the Atlantic Ocean nearby. You will find beach gear, unique gifts and wonderful items found only in Ocean City. For the budget conscious, Ocean City offers free events, including movies on the beach, family beach Olympics, laser show, fireworks and “Sundaes in the Park.” You can visit the weigh-in of a fishing tournament; not only the world-famous White Marlin Open, but you can often find smaller crowds at the weigh-in of the Shark and Tuna tournaments. These events draw scientists, whom you can often meet personally and learn first-hand about the big fish of the sea. For more information on these and more free events, visit www.ococean.com.

Ocean 98 Radio Personality “Bulldog”
Kelly Hughes Roberts
A A
t the age of 17, he stepped foot for the first time on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). David “Bulldog” Rothner knew this was the job for him. But little did Bulldog know it would change his life forever, allowing him to find his true passion and fulfill lifelong dreams. Making only $75 a week, Bulldog hoped to make just enough to fix his car, which would get him to California within a couple months. Instead, he found himself doing every job on the CME trading floor from desk manager and floor runner, to working the pit for two years, before getting his own seat on the exchange floor in May of 1984. As Bulldog reflected, he said, “I had the best and most fun job in Chicago! I got to work along side my mentors and my best friends. Those were the good ole days.” As an entrepreneur, Bulldog also explored other business ventures including being the co-founder of the U.S. Shidokan Association. Shidokan Karate is bare-knuckled knockdown karate. Tournaments are full contact and held in a boxing ring. Bulldog also founded the U.S. Shidokan Open, which has developed into one of the premier mixed martial arts tournaments in the world. Inspired by change, spontaneity, and following his dream to live in the Caribbean, after 18 years of working at the CME, Bulldog retired at the age of 35. He and his 38

wife, Nancy, relocated to the island of St. Maarten to promote two Shidokan world champion fighters. In August of 1998, after meeting with a local radio station to promote the matches, Bulldog joined their morning show. It was at that station he found his true passion for radio and began the “Bulldog and The Rude Awakening Show.” The show was an instant success and captured an audience of seven other surrounding islands. What was intended to be one relaxing year turned into six years in the Islands. While still living in St. Maarten, a mutual friend introduced Bulldog to Ocean City entrepreneur and owner of “Seacrets,” Leighton Moore. After spending almost 24 hours straight in a local bar, Leighton and Bulldog became quick friends. In 2004, Leighton invited Bulldog to visit Seacrets and to do some voice-over work for Leighton’s new radio station. Already back in the states and living in Houston, Bulldog hopped a plane and headed for Maryland. Soon after, Leighton offered Bulldog the job of the station’s morning man and general manager of WOCM. Bulldog loved the idea of living in the area and working for an independent radio station with room to grow. “This is a dream come true! All the other stuff was incredibly fun, but it got me to where I am to today and what I am most passionate about.” On January 10, 2005, Bulldog and The Rude Awakening Show was heard across Delmarva for the first time, and it continues to be heard weekday mornings from 6-10 a.m. on 98.1, locally and worldwide at www.irieradio.com. Their slogan, its “Edge-UTainment,” says it all. Bulldog was quoted saying, “Being a very opinionated person, I get to tell people what I think every morning. Who wouldn’t love that?” When he’s not working, Bulldog loves producing the show, spending time with his family, traveling, going to concerts, and driving his Ferraris. Bulldog is currently working on a book about his experiences and the incredible people he has been able to meet and interview.

Trimper’s Rides & Amusements,
Haunted House Celebrating 50 Years!
Courtesy of Brandon M. Seidl, dark ride enthusiast and Ocean City chronicler, with a distinct focus on the city's unique history of the amusement business. 42
Inside Ocean City 2014

n 1964, Granville Trimper, a third-generation family business man, decided it was time to expand the attraction lineup, at his family amusement park, by adding its first “dark ride.” His quest for expertise in design brought him to up-and-coming dark ride designer, Bill Tracy. The two gentlemen met in January of 1964 to inspect the building on the boardwalk, previously occupied by the Windsor Theater, to discuss the possibilities. Within weeks, Tracy had begun development of the iconic stunts and the massive façade that would become Trimper’s famous Haunted House. The ride opened to the public that spring and was an instant success. In 1981, another dark ride titled “Ghost Ship,” became available when Ocean Playland, previously located at 65th St. bayside closed for good. Trimper jumped at the opportunity to acquire the defunct attraction. For the next seven years, the Ghost Ship would remain in storage. During the winter of 1988, Trimper expanded the popular haunted ride, by adding a second story. At that time, the Ghost Ship was removed from storage and the Tracy stunts were incorporated into the addition. The ride now would comprise over 30 stunts and enjoy a ride time of 5 minutes. From the large expansion in 1988 to the present, the Trimper family has added effects most every year to keep the attraction fresh and exciting. The ride is now comprised of both vintage and technologically advanced stunts. In 2011, defunct park dark ride, “Phantasmagoria” another Tracy design, was acquired from a park in Oklahoma and installed that winter. During the addition of the new stunts, the entire haunted house was renovated with new lighting, paint and additional modern effects. With the incorporation of the new Tracy stunts Trimper’s Haunted House would become one of the longest dark rides in the country, featuring the largest display of original Tracy creations. Tracy returned to Trimper’s Rides and Amusements in 1971 for the construction of “Pirates Cove,” a walk-through style fun house, featuring a nautical theme. This attraction, complete with skeleton pirates, forced-perspective hallways and a variety of obstacles, offers patrons the sensation of being seasick on a boat deck without getting on the water. Tracy died just three years later, but his rides will live on at Trimper’s, thrilling new generations each year. Trimper and his family understood the value of the Tracy creations and take pride in their preservation for years to come. This year Trimper’s Haunted House celebrates 50 years of thrills. If you have never experienced this iconic attraction, there has never been a better time!

all can be a magical time at the beach. The color on the drive into town can be just stunning. Ocean City no longer “rolls up the streets,” as it did years ago. Sample wines from the region and local wineries at Winefest. In September, Ocean City welcomes back the Cruisers. The beach is not packed with visitors, hotel and dining deals are plentiful. If you’re here during the season, come back, we have so much more to share!

The Great Fire of 1925
Excerpt from the new “Vanishing Ocean City.” Story by Bunk Mann
T
he “Great Fire of 1925” started in the Ocean City Power Plant on the corner of Baltimore Avenue and Somerset Street in the early morning hours of December 29, 1925. The blaze spread to the Seaside Hotel next door and jumped the street to the Atlantic Hotel. Ocean City’s only fire engine broke down and the fire gained headway before firefighters from Berlin, Pocomoke, Snow Hill and Salisbury arrived to attempt to control it. The severe cold had frozen the fire hydrants and water had to be drafted from the bay, from holes chopped in the ice. Berlin’s chain-driven Mack engine pumped for 11 hours, non-stop from a hole in the ice at the end of Wicomico Street. The fire raged out of control and destroyed the Casino Theatre, Dolle’s Candyland, and several blocks of the boardwalk. It crossed the boardwalk and burned the Pier building, which at the time contained a luncheonette, gift shop, soda fountain, and a bowling alley. Recalled eyewitness Esther Pusey Carney, “I was eight years old and went to see that fire with my father. I’d been to church and learned about heaven and hell, and when I saw that fire I thought that hell and come to earth on the Ocean City sand.” The fire was finally contained by mid-afternoon but fireman stayed on the scene until late in the evening washing down embers and overhauling the ruins. Two blocks between Worcester and Somerset Streets were in ruins and the Pier Building and Fishing Pier were gone. Ocean City’s two oldest hotels – the Atlantic (1875) and The Seaside (1876) – had burned to the ground and the Casino Theatre and Dolle’s Candyland destroyed. The town’s electric power plant was in ashes; Ocean City would be without lights for 10 days. The property loss was estimated to be $346,000 with nearly half of that attributed to the Atlantic Hotel. This was a huge loss in 1925 (about $6,000,000 in today’s dollars) and most of it was not insured. On the positive side, there was no loss of life and no serious injuries to firefighters or spectators reported. Although the Seaside Hotel and Casino Theatre have faded into history, the Atlantic Hotel, Dolle’s Candyland, Pier Building, and Fishing Pier were rebuilt and play an important role on Ocean City’s boardwalk today. Photos by Owen Mumford, courtesy of Frances Mumford
Ocean City’s water tower, the only one in 1925, is visible here. Also pictured are the remains of the electric power house (power plant), the fire’s origin.

Bouncing Back After Mother Nature’s Wrath The Story of the Marina Deck
by Sandy Phillips
C C
oastal storms are part of life in any beach town, almost anywhere in the world. In towns where core business is seasonal, business owners have to bounce back quickly, particularly if a storm hits during peak season. And they must do so with a determination to finish the season in the black. Businesses like the Marina Deck Restaurant on Talbot Street can literally take up the floor boards, let the storm surge wash through and when the storm water recedes, reinstall their floor and open for business. Sound simple, yes? Unfortunately, Mother Nature is not that predictable and even the best laid plans can be literally tossed into the winds of a hurricane. In late October of 2012, Super-Storm Sandy approached Ocean City. Marina Deck owner, Dennis Kalchthaler, had taken his usual precautions to ride out the storm. He hoped for the best, as the hurricane moved closer to the resort. During low tide, Dennis drove onto the island to see how his restaurant was faring as the town tasted the first signs of storm surge. He waded in chest high water to find 8 inches of water already in the building, including the kitchen. As he looked past his restaurant he could see water in every direction. As the ocean met the bay, waves began breaking against Dennis’s restaurant. The scary part was that Ocean City was only in the very early stages of the storm and the weather was predicted to worsen. The overall damage from Sandy resulted in extensive damage to the Marina Deck. Every component of the business suffered severe structural damage, including the dining areas, bar, kitchen and roof. As the sun came out and Dennis took in the overall damage, he knew he would rebuild. If the business had to suffer this extensive damage, at least is was post-season and he had time to put a new plan in place, but winter was right around the corner. Ocean City business owners are a very resilant, hard working group of people. As Dennis picked up the pieces, he began to focus on the “new” Marina Deck and an opportunity to make some changes that he had always wanted to make when he purchased the business. Today the newly reconstructed Marina Deck sports a more “bird’s-eye” view from their upper deck at The Wild Pony Bar. Here you can dine and watch the boat traffic, the Route 50 bridge opening and closings and maybe even catch a glimpse of playful dolphins. You can also see the Assateague ponies when they visit the North side of the island. There is an extensive indoor playground complete with tubes, ropes and slides that will delight the entire family. What ever happened to those easily removed floor boards? They are still easily removed and Dennis has built in additional precautions that will hopefully allow the Marina Deck to ride out the next coastal storm with greater success.

Ocean City Life Saving Museum A A
t the south end of Ocean City’s boardwalk sits one of the oldest buildings in town, the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. Built in 1891, the building once housed the U.S. Life-Saving Service and later the Coast Guard. Today it’s the home to an array of interesting exhibits documenting local history. There is a “Boat Room” that echoes the original purpose of the building, complete with photos and artifacts from the era. There is an exhibit with information on the great storms that have shaped the town into the community that it is today and a bit about the local waterman and their life during those times. The “Aquarium Room” houses several local marine species, including seahorses, flounder, horseshoe crabs and more. There is even an Aquarium Feeding Program during the months of July and August which is a wonderful experience for the entire family. Be sure to call ahead, groups meet at the nearby tram station to begin the adventure. Visit the “Boardwalk Room” to step back in time and explore the treasures of the boardwalk past. Here you will find easily recognized boardwalk icons from their earlier days, like Trimper’s Rides and Dolle’s Candyland. You can also see an old boardwalk rolling chair of the 1920’s and vintage icons of an era gone by, like Laughing Sal from the old Fun House on Worcester Street and Bruno, the bulldog that would dart out from his house providing a scare to those who would walk too close, all in good fun of course. Other areas of the museum house exhibits from a variety of topics that are all reflective of the heart and soul of Ocean City. You will even find a collection of artifacts recovered from offshore wrecks like the African Queen and the Andrea Doria. Be sure to see the interesting exhibit of “sand.” The collection includes samples from all over the world offering a bird’s eye view of how unique beaches really are. For more information, a calendar of events, tickets and more, visit ocmuseum.org. or via phone at 410289-4991.
The Arts
T T
he Art League of Ocean City recently celebrated its 50th year and the opening of Ocean City’s premier art facility, The Ocean City Center for the Arts. Located on 94th Street, just two blocks west of Coastal Highway, you’ll not only find a superior presentation of the work of local and regional artists, but also working studios, a pottery studio, an artisan gift shop and a resident artist of the month. The Center for the Arts is open year round and admission to the gallery is free. There are classes available in a variety of disciplines for all skill levels and ages. During the summer months, “Art Adventure Camp” is offered for kids ages 6-14. This program is sponsored by the Ocean City Recreation Department and is a great opportunity for kids to be creative while on vacation at the beach. On the first Friday of each month, from 5-7 PM, art comes alive during the monthly exhibit opening reception. Attend and explore the galleries, meet local artists, and catch a glimpse of the creative process. The receptions are free and open to the public. Paint O.C., a plein air painting competition and event will be held mid-August and is a great opportunity to watch artists at work painting the scenery all over the resort. The event culminates in a “wet paint sale” where the public can purchase the freshly painted works of art. Plan to join the Art League for their Annual Sand Castle Home Tour September 18 &19. The Annual Home Tour is a self guided tour of fabulous Ocean City residences. Now in its 10th year (2014), it has been instrumental in raising funds for the Center for the Arts and will continue to play a part in the League’s continued growth. Tickets are $30 and can be reserved online. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information visit www.artleagueofoceancity.org or call 410-524-9433

Looking for a little culture while in town? Be sure to catch, or come back for a Brown Box Theater event!

“ ike the traveling medieval troupe that brought their shows from the cities to the villages on the back of a wagon, this traveling theater group brings theater to the people.” Created in 2009 by Ocean City native, director Kyler Taustin, the Brown Box Theater presents a show you won’t want to miss. The full professional set is brought to life by many talented actors from a variety of backgrounds. This theater group has brought its energetic productions to Maryland’s Eastern Shore for the past five years. When asked by Inside Ocean City “why Brown Box,” there were responses from the actors that demonstrated a true passion for the craft. “We love the fast paced, exciting presentations Brown Box produces, offering a huge variety of productions both large and small,” says actor Patrick Currah. “I love the fact that we are expanding awareness of the medium,” says education coordinator Rosalie Norris. “Brown Box offers so much more than a community theater,” she continues. Actor Emma Weigand, a three year veteran of the group, tells us that she loves the travel aspect of Brown Box and how each presentation of a play is unique as they acclimate into the individual surroundings of each set-up. “The diversity of each event, and our adaptations to the actual surroundings, help us make each presentation unique,” says Taustin. Not only does the group perform within Ocean City and surrounding communities, they now take their show into the classroom, introducing young minds to the magic of true theater. “We love to expose people to the acting arts, to share our craft with people who may never have had the opportunity to experience the theater,” says Taustin. We are even taking our shows to other countries and it’s so exciting,” he continues. The companies’ productions change each year and with the seasons. If you are here during September, when they are here for their annual productions, or if you have plans to return at another time, be sure to visit their Facebook page to see what shows are coming up. Some events are ticketed, others like their Shakespeare productions, are free of charge. Take the family; the plays are fun and engaging for everyone.

“Tanned and fit, with a hearty Italian accent, owner Fausto DiCarlo makes it a point to greet every guest - especially women. In true European style, he bestows them with a friendly kiss, the men receive a firm handshake. He's become famous for it. Women remind him if he forgets. Given the large crowds at his restaurant, this guy could make Richard Dawson blush. Talented enough to have once been a cooking sensation in the Philadelphia area, DiCarlo relocated to this vacation playground in 1993. Fausto figured he could work hard in the summer and enjoy golf in the off-season. He might have a six handicap, but he's busy year 'round. Ristorante Antipasti is a first-class Italian restaurant, but the fact that it's in a resort town best known for all-you-can-eat buffets, makes it a true standout. Fausto's signature dish, Timballo Di Mamma, is made of thin layers of homemade pasta filled with ground veal, tomatoes and a bechamel sauce. DiCarlo used to call it a "Sunday Dish," and offer it as an occasional special because it required so much work. However, it became so popular, he had to add it to the menu. Another mouth-watering speciality is the Garlic Steak, a center-cut filet covered in Italian herbs and then grilled black. You won't find this anywhere else. Golf will have to wait. There are guests to be greeted and many kisses to be bestowed.”

Tipping in the Resort P
P
roper tipping shows others that you’re “socially groomed.” You’re not a cheapskate nor a showoff. It is, however, better to over tip than under tip. There are critical limits on both ends of the spectrum. Proper tipping also ensures good service, particularly from a bartender. If there is a party of four or more, tip the bartender $10 on your first round. He/she will remember your generosity and pay particular attention to the group. Thereafter tip the standard for each round; $1 for a beer, $2 for a mixed drink. The amount of gratuity depends on the service being provided and is usually a percentage of the total bill. If a service is already expensive, and you cannot afford to tip the proper percentage, then you cannot afford the service. The acceptable tip for food servers, cocktail servers, and bartenders is 15% to 20% of the total bill. The American wait staff is paid an average hourly wage of $3.63 by their employer. If about $145.00, for a week’s worth of carting food and beverage back and forth from grumpy kitchen cooks to waiting customers sounds low to you, that’s because it is. The National Restaurant Association explains this issue, by citing the federal minimum wage law, which allows employers to pay employees, who receive tips, a lesser wage. Employees, who are tipped, count on gratuities to make up for this huge difference. You may feel that paying your waiter’s salary should not be your responsibility, but if you are eating out, you will be expected to tip and to do so appropriately. If you are hesitant to tip because you received poor service, do not skip out on gratuity; instead ask to speak to the manager. Most will be very appreciative to learn of less than quality service, and sometimes all the wait staff needs is a little direction to improve their level of service. Other than wait staff at a restaurant, there are others who appreciate tips for quality service. In some instances you will find a “tip jar” in a central location. Proper standards are very much appreciated here too. See our tip guide for those standards. Day Trip! Tangier Island T T
A town in Accomack County, Virginia
angier Island has a deep rich history that can still be seen today. This tiny island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay has a bounty of tasty marine life and has always been an ideal spot for commercial fishing. The industry has been a mainstay on this island since precolonial times. Before adventurers like John Smith explored this island, in the “New World,” the Pocomoke Indians used this island as a summer retreat. Numerous Indian artifacts have been found in Tangier and add to its unique cultural heritage. Tangier also played a part in the war of 1812, as a staging area for the failed British invasion on Baltimore; the very same event that inspired “The Star Spangled Banner,” by Francis Scott Key. The island is also noted for the dialect developed by it’s local people, which has evolved over years of British influence, coupled with isolation and the island lifestyle. Visit Tangier and step back in time, you are sure to see reminisces of this islands unique and abundant history! 152

by Brandon Phillips While you will no longer see a British Commander walking along the streets in his red coat, a visit to the official Tangier Island Museum will offer a glimpse of that very experience. Tangier Island History Museum, which provides the island’s only public restrooms, created the historical markers that line Tangier’s streets, providing a “history tour” of the island. The Museum also operates a small Community Library, and provides free kayaks and maps for visitors use. From it’s dock directly out back of the building, you can follow local “water trails” and explore the island from a different perspective. This unique opportunity allows visitors to paddle around the watermen’s crabbing shacks, built on stilts, in Tangier Harbor. You can also navigate the saltwater “guts” that dot the island. Visit “the Uppards,” a marshy island just to the north of Tangier that used to be home to a sizable community until it was abandoned to erosion in 1928. Immediately to the east of Tangier, also a kayak paddle away, is Port Isobel. This is a small
island owned by the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which operates a major environmental study center there. Port Isobel’s hiking trails are open to the public however, the lowlying marshland is ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and biting flies. If you visit, be sure to take along bug protection! There are few places in the United States with more waterfowl than Tangier. The marshes are home to many birds, including pelicans, blue herons, rails, and egrets, several varieties of ducks and geese, and osprey. It’s a bird lover’s paradise. Present day Tangier offers many areas to explore and several ways to reach this watery oasis. Hire a pilot to fly you into Tangier’s airstrip, which lies on the west side of the island, or you can take the more popular Tangier Island Cruise and arrive by boat. Either way you are bound to be greeted by friendly locals! Referred to as the “soft-shell crab capitol of the world,” the bustle of the commercial vessels and fishing facilities is always an exciting treat to observe. With several restaurants located on the island, fresh seafood is always abundant and prepared with years of experience and tradition. This step back into the past comes complete with the narrow streets you’d expect in such a historic community. While you might have a difficult time spotting a car on Tangier, you’ll have no problem seeing the locals cruise around in their favorite transportation, the golf cart! While visiting, why not rent your own from one of the local vendors and cruise around the island in “local” style. If copious seafood and golf carting around to see the sights proves exhausting, there are several beautiful bed and breakfasts located on the island offering a true Tangier experience. While in the area there are many other similar yet unique destinations that are only a short boat ride away. Places such as Crisfield, Smith Island, and Reedville all offer different experiences and are options to extend your visit to Tangier. Crisfield is another fishing community that has many new waterfront restaurants that exemplify the coastal lifestyle so engrained into these communities. Another island just north, Smith Island, is famous for its multiple layered cakes. The originals are made only on this island at the Smith Island Cake company. These cakes make a sumptious treat to take home to friends and family. Tangier offers something for everyone and is an amazing destination to explore. If you are fascinated by history then you’ll have your hands full on this island. If you love the salt life or simply wish to explore a very different life-style, Tangier Island is a well-kept secret located right in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. insideocmd.com Inside Ocean City 2014 153
