cean City offers so many ways to enjoy the water, from our pristine beaches to the thrill of the watersports, there are numerous ways to make your own waves. You can rent powerboats, waverunners, paddleboards, kayaks, wind surfers and of course surfboards. You can deep sea fish, small boat fish, or just rent a boat to relax on the water. It’s simple… just call a marina! OC’s marinas have everything you need from bait, to rods and tackle, to sunblock and cold beer. All charter boats are licensed and certified by the Coast Guard, and our captains practice conservation. They will share not only helpful fishing advice, but will take time to share a special moment, such as a whale or dolphin sightings. Boats have different specialties, so check the docks and find out what’s biting and who’s catching, then cast off and have fun! 42

Know Your Beach Patrol

An Organization Dedicated to A Safe and Enjoyable Beach Environment

T

he Ocean City Beach Patrol is a division of the town’s Department of Recreation and Parks. OCBP consists of over 225 men and women dedicated to ocean rescue and maintaining a safe and orderly environment along the 10 miles of Ocean City's beautiful beaches. We invite you to learn more about OCBP and what it is like to be a member of this professional organization. We hope this information will assist you in making your stay in Ocean City as safe and enjoyable as possible. S.R.T. stands for Surf Rescue Technician (lifeguard). This is the title earned by the men and women who have demonstrated competency in the techniques and skills required for surf rescue. SRT's duties include educating the public, warning swimmers of potential danger, rescuing distressed swimmers, responding to emergency situations, administering first aid, reuniting lost and found individuals, enforcing city ordinances, and other duties as assigned. The beach patrol is on duty everyday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. starting the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and continuing seven days a week through the Sunday of Sunfest weekend, usually the third Sunday after Labor Day. After Labor Day, the beach patrol begins implementation of fall coverage. Fall coverage extends until the Sunday of Sunfest weekend. Fall coverage is a change in standard operating procedures as well as placement of guard stands along the beach. SRTs will be on duty between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. After Sunfest weekend, the beach patrol no longer mans guard stands on the beach, but roaming patrols on four-wheel-drive vehicles, continue to monitor the beach through the end of October. The purpose of these patrols is to be available should beachgoers not heed the warnings of: “Never swim when surf rescue technicians are not manning the lifeguard stands.” Because of the uniqueness of the job’s demands, the beach patrol does not require or accept certification or past experience. All individuals seeking employment with the Ocean City Beach Patrol must successfully complete all aspects of a pre-employment physical skills evaluation. Testing for OCBP is offered in Ocean City and sometimes at off site locations. We encourage anyone interested in beginning this great adventure to call Captain Arbin at Beach Patrol Headquarters, 410-289-7556. For specifics on requirements, test locations, dates and times, please refer to www.ococean.com/ocbp; click on the JOBS button or email ocbp@ococean.com. SRT’s are athletic, ambitious, and responsible men and women who are 17 years of age or older. Every candidate must be able to perform the following tasks: Run in soft sand; swim in ocean water; enter and exit the ocean through the surf; move an unconscious person of 150 lbs.; see for 400 meters; hear and locate whistle blast from 300 meters; speak and read the English language as well as meeting the following physical criteria: 56

Inside Ocean City 2013

insideocmd.com

• Complete a 300-meter soft sand run in less than 65 seconds (400-meter run in 80 seconds offsite testing). • Complete a 400-meter ocean swim in less than 10 minutes (500 meters in less than 10 minutes offsite in a pool). • Complete a series of simulated rescues in the surf incorporating the rescue buoy. • Complete a rescue using a cross-chest carry and victim removal techniques. • Complete a medley of 150-meter run, 100-meter swim and a 150-meter run. • Complete a tower transport of the SRT chair a distance of 20 meters. • Complete basic lifesaving skills in which you perform holds and releases in a controlled water setting. • Complete a personal interview. Once a candidate passes the rigorous, physical test, the Ocean City Beach Patrol provides training for the job during Surf Rescue Academy. Candidates can be assured that all necessary skills, techniques, procedures and protocols will be taught to them as part of the Surf Rescue Academy. This is an eight-day paid training program (12.99/hr and 14.07 after probation.) conducted by beach patrol instructors with support from other public safety agencies, followed by three weeks of supervised on-the-job probation. All aspects of becoming an SRT are taught during this Surf Rescue Academy. While in the academy, the rookies receive instruction in open water rescues, beach patrol policies and procedures, basic oceanography, use of rescue equipment, first aid, CPR, semaphore communications (a series of signals using flags) radio protocol, and physical training consistent with the demands of the job. Successful completion of all phases of Surf Rescue Academy is required to earn SRT rank and assignment to the beach. When you see someone sitting on the stand guarding your beach, you can feel confident that they have gone through one of the most rigorous testing and training programs in the nation. Once a candidate secures a job with OCBP they become a member of an organization that changes people’s lives. The camaraderie, the inter-crew competitions, and the fact that they are contributing to the success of an “All America City,” makes being a member of OCBP one of the best jobs in the world! Veteran Guards Re-certify Each Summer Each year veteran guards of OCBP must re-qualify by passing two physical tests, a 500-meter swim in under10 minutes and a 300-meter soft sand sprint in under 65 seconds. The test is the patrol’s way of ensuring that every guard is ready to perform the physically demanding tasks of the job. After the actual testing is done, the veteran guards then re-certify in first responder skills, which include a First Aid and CPR certification. Lt. Wes Smith, the patrol’s Director of Training and a professor at the University of Miami, coordinates the training program for the rookie academy and the re-certification training of veteran guards. The beach patrol takes pride in the organization and the skills of the SRTs. What the patrol offers is a certification in surf rescue, therefore they re-certify each summer. The beach patrol training is what makes them who they are as an organization and gives them international recognition. As training improves each year, so do the skills of the

veteran guards and the patrol as a whole. The veteran guards and the people they guard can relax in the knowledge that everyone is prepared in every way each year for a fun filled and safe summer. Beach Safety Seminars Beach Safety Seminars are held every Sunday morning at various locations on the beach. At a beach safety seminar, one of the surf rescue technicians from your area will first give a brief overview of Ocean City and the beach environment. They will inform beachgoers of weather and beach conditions for the day. They will also be available to answer any questions, so please feel free to ask. It is also not unusual for the SRT to have give-aways, so please bring the kids. Ocean City is a great resort to visit anytime. On Memorial Day weekend, when thousands of beach goers come to Ocean City to enjoy the beginning of another summer season, and the white stands are manned by the best lifeguards in the nation, you’ll know that it is not a “ just-add-water” beach patrol. Many months of off-season work have gone into delivering one of the most professional and best beach patrols in the world, because we believe you deserve nothing less. Enjoy your upcoming beach season and rest assured that our number-one priority is the safety of every individual that steps foot on the pristine, white sand beaches, we all know and love. If you want to learn more about the Ocean City Beach Patrol and the programs they offer, log onto www.ococean.com/ocbp. Always remember: “Keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard’s in the stand!” insideocmd.com

Winding bentgrass fairways are lined with native wetland grasses that drift into stunning sand dunes on this natural golf course. Impeccably groomed oversized greens and four strategically placed sets of tees beckon golfers of every skill level. After just a few minutes at this facility, you will see why these 27 holes of scenic beauty are the locals’ favorite. A former associate of Jack Nicklaus, course architect Rick Jacobson has won acclaim for his course designs. In Rick’s own words, “Bear Trap Dunes is visually unique because of its ample use of sand dunes – adhering to the coastal area’s natural terrain. Because of strategically placed dunes, grassy hollows, bunkers and water hazards, players will have to ‘think’ their way through each hole.” 70

Ristorante Antipasti

Ocean City’s Oldest Gourmet Restaurant

R R

Inside Ocean City 2013

insideocmd.com

istorante Antipasti is Ocean City’s oldest gourmet restaurant. For over 18 years visitors and locals alike have enjoyed the culinary talents of Fausto Dicarlo. In Italy, at the age of 13, Fausto began to cook at the side of his mother who was a professional chef. His training was rich in true Italian cuisine, following the traditional tastes of the Torino region. By the age of 26, Fausto made his way to America and began working as a bus boy at a restaurant in Philadelphia. As he cleared tables, Fausto struggled with the “non-traditional” Italian dishes being served. He truly wanted to be in the kitchen, and plating the quality of food he had spent the last 13 years perfecting. Finally, he spoke up to management and asked for the chance to show his talent. He was provided the opportunity and, in no time, word traveled about his abilities. Soon, there were extensive wait times to dine at the restaurant. Because of the restaurant’s proximity to the network television stations, news anchors and the famous people they interviewed, began to come in to dine. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet some very famous people through my cooking,” says Fausto. “And it has been just wonderful!” After developing relationships with some of the network executives, Fausto was offered the opportunity to do cooking segments on occasion and then on a regular basis. All of this only added to his local popularity. While Fausto was enjoying his newfound success, his wife Binda, the coat check girl at the very same restaurant, was slowly stealing his heart. Binda too had grown up in the restaurant business in the small Italian town of Abruzzi. With her business ability and Fausto’s cooking talent, it was a match made in heaven. Soon the couple married and together began reaching for more stars. After several vacations in the resort, the couple moved to the Ocean City area in 1993, with the goal of opening their own restaurant. In what seemed like no time, they opened the doors to Ristorante Antipasti. With Fausto in the kitchen and Binda managing the operations, they once again became the talk of the town. People come from near and far. Many that used to dine with Fausto back in “Philly” make the trip for a superior dining experience, some on a regular basis. In fact, so many people from both his Philadelphia beginning and his new chapter here in Ocean City, shared their wonderful dining experience with the Food Network, that they sent their own fact finding team to taste the fare. The result was a glowing recommendation from Jill Cordes & Marc Silverstein of the Food Network and an appearance on the Food Networks show, “The Best Of.” Ristorante Antipasti was also voted one of the five best Italian restaurants in the country, a Food Network viewer’s choice award! For the locals, it’s wonderful to have this level of Italian cuisine right in our own backyard. If you’re here on vacation, dining at Ristorante Antipasti should be a “Must Do” on your list. You are sure to be greeted, right at the door, by Fausto himself and whisked away for a truly memorable meal.

Tipping in the Resort

P P

roper tipping shows others that you’re “socially groomed.” You’re not a cheapskate nor a showoff. It is however better to over tip than under tip, but there are critical limits on both ends of the spectrum. Proper tipping also ensures good service, particularly from a bartender. If there is a party of four or more, tip the bartender $10 on your first round. He/she will remember your generousity and pay particular attention to the group. Thereafter tip the standard for each round; $1 for a beer, $2 for a mixed drink. The amount of gratuity depends on the service being provided and is usually a percentage of the total bill. If a service is already expensive, and you cannot afford to tip the proper percentage, then you cannot afford the service. The acceptable tip for food servers, cocktail servers, and bartenders is 15% to 20% of the total bill. The American wait staff is paid an average hourly wage of $3.63 by their employer. If about $145.00, for a week’s worth of carting food and beverage back and forth from grumpy kitchen cooks to waiting customers sounds low to you, that’s because it is. The National Restaurant Association explains this issue, by citing the federal minimum wage law, which allows employers to pay employees, who receive tips, a lesser wage. Employees, who are tipped, count on gratuities to make up for this huge difference. You may feel that paying your waiter’s salary should not be your responsibility, but if you are eating out, you will be expected to tip and to do so appropriately. If you are hesitant to tip because you received poor service, do not skip out on gratuity; instead ask to speak to the manager. Most will be very appreciative to learn of less than quality service, and sometimes all the waitstaff needs is a little direction to improve their level of service. Other than waitstaff at a restaurant, there are others who appreciate tips for quality service. In some instances you will find a “tip jar” in a central location, proper standards are very much appreciated here too. See our tip guide for those standards.

Bartender $1 for a beer, $2 for mixed drinks Bellboy $1-$2 Cabbie 15% of the total fare Coat Check Attendant $1 Caddy 50% of the caddy fee Dock Boy $5 Golf Cart Attendant $2 Jet Ski & Parasail Attendant $5-$10 depending on the size of your party Maid Service $1-$10 per day depending on the mess you made Pizza Delivery Person 5% Spa Services 15% to 20% of the of the bill Tow Truck Driver $5 You expect excellent customer service, do your part in tipping!

Where Only The Freshest Foods Are Prepared

Agnello Rosmarino Lamb in a rosemary demiglace Nodini di Vitello ai Pepi Veal chop with peppercorns, rosmarino and demiglace Timballo Abruzzese Thin layers of pasta with ground veal, Buffala Mozzarella and nutmeg Risotto Erotico al Pesce Lump crabmeat with saffron over Arborio rice Dove Sole A gourmet white fish, fileted tableside.

The Food Network offers the best summary of this exquisite dining experience.—Jill Cordes & Marc Silverstein “Tanned and fit, with a hearty Italian accent, owner Fausto DiCarlo makes it a point to greet every guest - especially women. In true

European style, he bestows them with a friendly kiss, the men receive a firm handshake. He's become famous for it. Women remind him if he forgets. Given the large crowds at his restaurant, this guy could make Richard Dawson blush. Talented enough to have once been a cooking sensation in the Philadelphia area, DiCarlo relocated to this vacation playground in 1993. Fausto figured he could work hard in the summer and enjoy golf in the off-season. He might have a six handicap, but he's busy year 'round. Ristorante Antipasti is a first-class Italian restaurant, but the fact that it's in a resort town best known for all-you-can-eat buffets, makes it a true standout. Fausto's signature dish, Timballo Di Mamma, is made of thin layers of homemade pasta filled with ground veal, tomatoes and a bechamel sauce. DiCarlo used to call it a "Sunday Dish," and offer it as an occasional special because it required so much work. However, it became so popular, he had to add it to the menu. Another mouth-watering speciality is the Garlic Steak, a center-cut filet covered in Italian herbs and then grilled black. You won't find this anywhere else. Golf will have to wait. There are guests to be greeted and many kisses to be bestowed.”

Happy Jack Pancake House; Serving A Fast, Quality Breakfast for 50 Years! F

ifty years ago, Dick Smith turned an old Post Office in Ocean City into a small restaurant. His original plans were for a crab house, but Dick found great success serving breakfast with Hungry Jack Pancakes. You may recall the brand of pancake mix; you can easily find it in your local grocer. Everyone wants a hearty breakfast before heading to the beach and Dick filled a very popular need, providing speedy service and quality food. While the company that owns the name Hungry Jack was flattered that a restaurant would be named after it, they wanted to keep their own identify and asked Dick to change the name. When the restaurant opened for the second year, it was called Happy Jack Pancake House. It was aptly renamed since everyone left happy! In 1992 Bob Torrey took over the downtown location and ran the restaurant there for the next ten years. In 2002, seeking a larger facility, Torrey moved the restaurant to its present day location on 26th St. and Coastal Highway. The business provides the same great food and fast service. In fact, many of the employees moved right along with the business and several still work there today. “It’s like a family, says Torrey. I’ve watched a lot of kids grow up here and we’ve had a lot of fun. It’s been a great journey.” Continuing to grow the business on its original principles of serving the best quality ingredients for breakfast, including fresh ground coffee, Torrey has a constant eye toward the future. There have been a few menu item changes over the years, with the addition of Chocolate Chip pancakes for those who like to splurge a little on vacation; and for the health conscious individuals, Sweet Potato and Buckwheat pancakes too. Happy Jack Pancake House also serves fresh Belgian Waffles and eggs any way you like them. A great way to start your day!

Harborside Bar & Grill Celebrates Twenty Years!

rowing up in a business often tends to set the stage for your future. It gets in your blood and becomes a part of who you are. For Chris Wall, working summers at Phillips Seafood since the age of twelve, provided him with a very valuable and paid education. It was only a natural progression of events that made him co-owner of Harborside Bar and Grill in West Ocean City. To follow fate a little closer, Wall met his business partner, Lloyd Whitehead, while in grade school. A friendship that was truly nurtured over the years and even more so as the boys found themselves working and learning together as co-workers at Phillips each summer. Time passed and both young boys participated in almost every aspect of the restaurant business; Chris learning personally at the side of Phillips owner, Shirley Phillips. And not just the technical business components, but the customer service and standards that bring people back time and time again. At the age of 22, Wall was ready to take on the challenge of higher learning in the Carolinas. Lloyd was just graduating from the University of Maryland College Park. It seemed that the friends lives were on a bit of a different track. Fate again intervened, when a local realtor discovered the opportunity to purchase a restaurant on the Commercial Fishing Harbor, and was looking for entrepreneurs to invest. It was a unique and wonderful opportunity for the young men. Since they knew their relationship had the trust and skills to make it happen, they embarked on a journey to success at a very young age. Two years later, in 1995, they bought out a silent partner and the friends were on their own with a thriving business. 1995 also saw the birth of Harborside’s famous “Fresh Squeezed Orange Crush.” With the release of flavored vodkas, Wall and Whitehead wanted a unique drink, a libation to use as a signature, and that beverage proved to be another huge success. You can find an Orange Crush in most any OC bar today, but you will never have one just like the Original “Fresh Squeezed Orange Crush” at Harborside. In 2001, they made major renovations to the kitchen to increase the quality, quantity and kinds of food they were able to prepare. Bars, both inside and out, were revamped to accommodate the growing demand both during season and during second season. 2005 saw a need for more parking and initiated the purchase of more land. By 2012, there was a need to construct a larger outdoor deck and add boat slips for pleasure boat parking. Today, 20 years later, the successful restaurateurs will tell you it’s been a lot of “blood, sweat and tears,” to achieve their success. Wall tells us, “We wouldn’t be where we are today, without our dedicated staff and loyal customers. It takes a team and we’ve been very fortunate.”

ince 1986 the Rice House Bistro has combined the art and precision of Asian cuisine with the freshest ingredients. This family owned restaurant has become an Ocean City landmark, offering dine-in or carry out. Savory sushi rolls and nigiri for the sushi connoisseur, featuring items like their Volcano Roll: spicy salmon and avocado wrapped in rice paper, topped with spicy mayo, lump crab meat and Old Bay. Mr. B puts his personal stamp on sushi with an Eastern Shore twist. However, the menu at the Rice House Bistro goes way beyond sushi. There is an impressive selection of Asian, seafood, and steak dishes too. They offer a warm, family friendly environment in the Emperor’s Dining Room or sushi bar. The commitment to deliver fabulous food and excellent service ensures your dining experience will be a memorable one.

Burley Oak Brewery

W W

hen asked why he opened Burley Oak Brewing Company, Bryan Brushmiller replied with a chuckle. "Because I needed a job," he said. "Starting a business that involved expanding my passion for making beer, well, just made sense. Also, it has always been very important for me to be able to create jobs for the local community; with Burley Oak I have been successful in doing so for eight people." Between distributing their product and running a tavern in Berlin, MD, this group has their hands full. Burley Oak's tavern is open 7 days a week, operating until 2am most nights. They house live music every Friday and Saturday night and offer free tours on the weekends. This is definitely a tour that should not be missed; whether it be by owner or head brewer, the experience is very personal and interactive. This small brewery is comprised of a collage of copper and stainless steel tanks, which help create over 30 different brews. Even though the production capacity is small, this system turns out beers with big taste. Although they can currently produce in a year what a fully automated brewery can do in a day, you get that truly hand-crafted taste in each batch, and that's what they are all about.

108

Inside Ocean City 2013

insideocmd.com

Although Burley Oak imports some of their grains and hops, they make every effort to use local resources. You will see Rye in their beers from a farm in Snow Hill, hops from farms within the county, and fruits and spices from their own Berlin Farmer's Market. Burley Oak has an ongoing relationship with all of these local farmers to continue to source the best ingredients. Not only does the brewhouse purchase ingredients from local farmers, but they also return the favor by sending their spent grains to local farms to feed cattle. While being open only 18 months, Burley Oak is proud to have their product served in over 75 establishments throughout Maryland and D.C. It took more than hard work to get where they are today... having the beer to back it up is key. Burley Oak is constantly working on ways to set themselves apart from other breweries. Whether it be making a beer with no hops or experimenting with a variety of ingredients to push the limits of brewing, they have set a pace that has not gone unnoticed in the industry. Taking these chances has not only set Burley Oak apart from other breweries, but has awarded them with unimaginable opportunities. This February, Burley Oak will be one of less than 30 craft breweries (out of over 2000) invited to a prestigious micro-brewery competition in New England. It seems we could talk for some time about Burley Oak's long list of accomplishments in such a short time, as well as wonder what's next? If you see a stick tap handle at a bar in Maryland, be sure to give it a try; and don't miss your opportunity to stop by the brewery to enjoy a hand-crafted beer, take a heartfelt tour, or enjoy some good tunes. Be sure to tell them we sent you!

et us introduce you to some of our pub owners. They are a group of dedicated entrepreneurs that have learned behind the bar and in the kitchens of other local business owners as youth. Many career paths began on college break at summer jobs in the resort. Today, they have their own thriving establishments. Long hours and hard work have rewarded them with success. They say their achievements have come from never losing sight of quality food and beverage and superior customer service. These pub owners remain on the cutting edge of the pub experience and often have a new idea, right around the corner. We recommend frequent visits so you don’t miss out! This group of dedicated family men offer an atmosphere for the entire family during the day and then transform into late night hot-spots. You will often find live music, lots of TV’s for sports fans and a warm welcoming atmosphere you just won’t want to leave. To our OC home-grown pub owners, we salute you! Steve Pappas—The Original Greene Turtle, 11601 Coastal Highway, Ocean City. Steve Pappas began his career at the age of 14 in his parents’ restaurant, The Poplar Inn in Dundalk, MD. Soon after graduating college, he found himself in a job and caught between coaching lacrosse at SU or starting a business career. When 410-723-2120 the opportunity to purchase the tiny Greene Turtle tavern arose, Steve and friend Tommy Dickerson seized the opportunity and never looked back. Steve was 26 at this time. Today 37 years later, his business has expanded to include Greene Turtle Apparel, Turtle on the Run and the Blue Ox Bar and Grill. Steve tells us his greatest accomplishments in life include his family and the successful creation of a nationally recognized franchise that all started from a tiny 1500 square foot tavern. As Steve looks to the future, his goal is to retire soon to play golf and travel. He is also setting the stage to pass the business on to his children. Tommy Dickerson—Greene Turtle West, 9616 Stephen Decatur Hwy., West Ocean City. So many young people graduate college and really don’t know what to do next. Finding a job is not always easy and Tommy Dickerson found himself in that situation. What to do? His parents had a 410-213-1500 bar as he was growing up and it was a business he knew well. When the opportunity arose to purchase the small tavern, Greene Turtle, he and friend Steve Pappas jumped right in. Tommy feels his greatest accomplishment is to have owned a restaurant that is still very popular after 30 plus years. “It’s a very competitive business,” Tommy says. “The Greene Turtle franchise, it’s something I’m very proud of. Then again, my wife and 2 daughters are by far the greatest!” Tommy too is ready to retire to have an opportunity to relax and just be able to spend more time with family.

Greg Shockley— Shenanigan’s Irish Pub & Grille 309 North Atlantic Ave. (On the Boardwalk), Ocean City. Greg Shockley was in the restaurant business at the age of 16. He honed his skills at places like Phillips Harborplace, 410-289-7181 The Quarterdeck and the Brass Elephant. Like so many of our Pub Masters, one day Greg found himself at a crossroads in life and he toyed with doing something else altogether. Fate intervened and provided the opportunity to purchase Shenanigan’s. Greg tells us that his professional success is part of the winning spirit that is Ocean City and he has won several awards since taking the reins of the business. In particular, Shenanigan’s was awarded Best Tavern by the Restaurant Association of Maryland in 2012. Retirement is not in Greg’s near future. He wishes to continue to expand the reputation and success Shenanigans has enjoyed for the next few years. John Fager—Fager’s Island, 201 60th Street, Ocean City At the age of 18, John Fager embarked on his journey in the restaurant business. A truly self-taught man, he 410-524-5500 opened the successful Fager’s Island in 1975. John tells us that his greatest inspiration to open the business was simply that he too needed a job. A very optimistic man, John has never looked back, but continued to move forward. Soon after opening the business, the Hotels at Fager’s Island followed, adding to his long list of personal and professional accomplishments. With the optimism that has brought him this far, John sees his future as unlimited! Billy Carder—BJ’s on the Water 115 75th Street, Ocean City

410-524-7575

Billy Carder too, was a young man of just 16 when his pub career began. He learned at local establishments like the Embers, Fager’s Island and the old Hurricane Nite-Club. Through a natural progression of events and the encouragement of Embers owner, Sam Taustin, Billy opened BJ’s on the Water. Today, 33 years later the pub is still a huge success, as is Billy. He was awarded Restaurateur of the Year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland in 2011. When we asked Billy how he sees’ his future, he was very clear. “I love the restaurant business! I don’t see retirement in the near future, but I would like to cut back on some of the hours I spend there everyday.”

Fin City Brewing Co.

W W

e are all told we have at least one “great idea,” and the secret to our success is recognizing that opportunity when it presents itself. For Vince Wright, a brew competition at the World Famous Pumpkin Chunkin’, in Delaware, began opening doors that would present the golden moment. Vince attended the festival with his own home brew of Pumpkin Ale, a libation themed for the famous event. After being crowned the winner of the division, Vince was introduced to Sam Calagione, owner of Dogfish Head Brewery. The unique twist was that Calagione was filming for an upcoming show about DogFish on the Discovery Channel. It is at that moment that Vince got his first taste of fame. Vince’s next moment would come at Hooper’s annual Brews on the Beach, where again, he would win the competition with his Pumpkin ale. But this time, he was at a restaurant that had a niche for serving beer and crabs. Seizing the moment, he approached General Manager, Ryan Intrieri and his management team; Patrick Brady, Michael Glabich and Justin Keller. They were intrigued by the idea of serving their own brew to customers and soon Hoopers owner, Royette Shepherd was on board with the idea. By the spring of 2012, Fin City was born, dazzling, not only hungry seafood lovers, but the local community in general. Serving mostly pale ale style beer, perfect for crabs, the Hoopers wait staff will always be able to suggest the perfect brew for your meal. And there is always something interesting on tap that you won’t want to miss; from a Blueberry Ale, an IOC favorite, to the beer that started it all, the Award-winning Pumpkin Ale, Fin City is for more than just crabs. You will also find seasonal beers. Visit their website or follow them on Facebook to see what’s currently pouring. All brews are a bit unique, created in a very traditional method, with absolutely no automation. You can even occasionally catch them kegging via their pure gravity fed system, right in the restaurant. The libation flows directly from the copper vats tucked away on the dining room balcony. For more on Fin City, visit them online at fincitybrewing.com or on Facebook at Facebook.com/FinCity.brewingcompany.

Seacrets 25 Years of Success W

hen you look at a successful business, you know there has to be a successful mind behind the idea and its development; a formula for that success and a journey from conception to reality. I had the opportunity to sit down with Leighton Moore of Seacrets and hear about his journey. Like most successful entrepreneurs he has done his time in the trenches. He has bussed tables, cooked in the kitchen, swept floors, driven a backhoe, and whatever needed to be done to keep moving forward and achieve ultimate success. The Seacrets story really begins in Moore’s childhood. As a young boy he would fish, clam, crab, etc… from the end of a pier on the property where Seacrets stands today. It was a private pier, but Leighton would visit most every day and take home fresh seafood for his mother to prepare for dinner. During this time he seems to have developed a kinship with the land. The property owner was not always happy to find the boy on his property, but for Moore, it was just a wonderful place to spend his time. As time passed the property owner began to develop a soft spot for the boy who came every day. He watched this persistent boy grow into an ambitious young man. Across the street, Moore’s parents had a bustling hotel business and as his parents aged, Moore found himself running the business by the age of 16. Having felt a sense of accomplishment, he was ready for something new and so he took a position at the pub across the street. Leighton was intrigued with his new challenge and worked hard to master this new endeavor. 128

Inside Ocean City 2013

insideocmd.com

Time passed and Ocean City entered a huge growth phase and that property owner, where Leighton gathered his seafood, decided to sell his property. As fate would have it, his first offer was to Moore. Of course years of hard work had placed him in a position to make the purchase and this young man signed the deed to what would become Seacrets, Jamaica, U.S.A. In the beginning Moore, now with a young family, lived in the cottage that had kept a watchful eye over that pier for years. He actually ran Seacrets from there. Of course it was a small beach bar in the beginning, but people came in large numbers to enjoy the pub on the water, live music and an atmosphere reminiscent of the Caribbean. Leighton’s real success came from listening carefully to his guests’ their wants and needs, by working the business on a daily basis and forming real relationships with the employees. As he evaluated the end of his first year, he immediately began planning for the next by taking all that he had learned to date and applying it to the future. It was a very successful formula, as proven by Seacrets continued growth for 20 years in a row. From a tiny beach bar, to a successful restaurant and nightclub that brings in big name acts and accommodates large numbers of people. All with a constant goal in mind, “to provide a safe friendly, high value entertainment complex for the benefit of the estate, the employees, and the community,” says Leighton. Today, 25 years later, as Leighton has passed the reins of the business to loyal employees, he is already looking toward his next challenge, the art of building a “surf rescue” boat. Being very community minded, he is building the boat for the Town of Ocean City Fire Department and doing it from the ground up. Using groundbreaking technology, Moore is once again setting the pace in his endeavor. Most assuredly it will carry the mark of a man whose formula for success has been carefully nurtured and can be applied to most any situation.

It’s no surprise that hundreds of couples choose OC every year.
