The Trail Of The Whispering Giants The Whispering Giants are a collection of sculptures by Hungarian born artist, Peter Toth. In September of 1976, the artist gifted a statue to the town and currently, it keeps a watchful eye over the Ocean City Inlet. Standing at 20 foot tall, this statue, made of oak, resembles the Assateague Indians who occupied the Island until the mid-1700’s. 12

Frontier Town
Western Theme Park & Campground I n the 1960s, when classic television shows like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Lone Ranger were popular, Frontier Town was born and it brought the magic of those shows to life. For local families, taking the kids to Frontier Town was and still remains a “rite of passage.” The park has been delighting kids and families since 1960. While over the years they have evolved to add the Campground, Water Park, & High Ropes Adventure Park, the components that made the original Frontier Town a huge success in the 1960s still remain in place. These staples offer parents a chance to show their kids where some of their first childhood memories were made, all while creating new ones for the next generation. It seems Frontier Town moments are indelibly etched into your memory...I have never found anyone who has been, that doesn’t recount their ride on the stagecoach, and the “hold-up” by gun slingin' thieves, or being the kid on the real steam train who is asked to hide the gold. It’s wholesome fun that you just can’t find anywhere else. There are real cowboys (yes, some are from the National Rodeo Association or National Federation of Professional Bull Riders), Can Can girls, and western actors that bring the Western Theme Park to life. The replica town, circa 1880, offers a taste of the west that helped shape America, and it’s just minutes from Ocean City. Enjoy the western shows and gunfight at “OK Corral,” feel the earth-pounding as the Cherokees perform their ceremonial dances, and after your rootin’ tootin’ good time, chow down in one of the town’s old fashioned eateries. There’s something for everyone’s dining pleasure.
IMages from the '60's
Images of Today's Park But wait, there’s more...so much more. Today’s Frontier Town offers a Water Park that will have you shakin' off that old town dust in no time. Experience the thrill of their triple lane water slide, relax on the lazy river, do a little tubin’ on the flumes, or splash around with the youngins' in the family activity pool. It’s more family fun, with the water element, that will cool off your summer day. There are bathhouses where you can don your bathing suit and even more eats while you relax around the pool. Once you're cooled off, head to the High Ropes Adventure Park, located right between the Water Park and Western Theme Park. Three high ropes courses suspended throughout the forest offer 47 obstacles to conquer, and over 1,200 feet of exhilarating zip lines. Again, with family in mind, each person chooses his or her own degree of difficulty. Experienced course monitors make the experience enjoyable and safe, so grab your harness 'n hard hat and climb on up! With so much to do, including an 18 hole mini-golf course we haven’t even mentioned until now, the park needed a place for people to spend the night so they would be fresh for another full day of adventure...and so a western themed Campground was born. It too is complete with authentic covered wagons for the kids to bunk in! Details, details, it’s all here. We could just go on and on about all you need to see and experience. There’s more than a day's worth of things to do at Frontier Town, so if that's all you allowed for, you’ll just have to go back! Did we menton the mine shaft? Panning for gold? The pulled pork sandwiches? How the lazy river, just goes on and on…

hen the kids are ready for a break from the beach, you will find Ocean City offers a wealth of exciting activities the whole family can enjoy. From kiddie rides and games to Ziplines and Parasails, there truly is something for everyone. For the kid in all of us, the water parks offer daylong spills and thrills, as well as safe and fun play areas for the “little” visitors. Are you ready to dry off and shake the sand from your shoes? There are go-karts and mini golf, laser tag and paintball. Adventure awaits on the Pirate Ships, at a Wild West Show or even at the Discovery Center. Explore another side of O.C. on a nature cruise or bird watch along the Pocomoke River. Visit the wild ponies of Assateague or slip over to the Salisbury Zoo. Whale and dolphin watching are year-round treats and you might catch a glimpse on a thrilling speed boat ride! Looking for more of a birds’ eye view? Fly high on a helicopter ride or soar through the air on a parasail. When you’ve seen all the things you can do from a higher perspective, you’ll have your next outing already planned. Take time to explore O.C.’s world famous Boardwalk, where there are surrey bikes, segways and train rides, haunted houses, museums, carnival games, arcades, kiddie and thrill rides. A stroll or a run are much more pleasant with the Atlantic Ocean nearby. You will find beach gear, unique gifts and wonderful items found only in Ocean City. For the budget conscious, Ocean City offers free events, including movies on the beach, family beach Olympics, laser show, fireworks and “Sundaes in the Park.” You can visit the weigh-in of a fishing tournament; not only the world-famous White Marlin Open, but you can often find smaller crowds at the weigh-in of the Shark and Tuna tournaments. These events draw scientists, whom you can often meet personally and learn first-hand about the big fish of the sea. For more information on these and more free events, visit www.ococean. com.

t the south end of Ocean City’s boardwalk sits one of the oldest buildings in town, the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. Built in 1891, the building once housed the U.S. Life-Saving Service and later the Coast Guard. Today it’s the home to an array of interesting exhibits documenting local history. There is a “Boat Room” that echoes the original purpose of the building, complete with photos and artifacts from the era. There is an exhibit with information on the great storms that have shaped the town into the community that it is today and a bit about the local waterman and their life during those times. The “Aquarium Room” houses several local marine species, including seahorses, flounder, horseshoe crabs and more. There is even an Aquarium Feeding Program during the months of July and August which is a wonderful experience for the entire family. Be sure to call ahead, groups meet at the nearby tram station to begin the adventure. Visit the “Boardwalk Room” to step back in time and explore the treasures of the

boardwalk past. Here you will find easily recognized boardwalk icons from their earlier days, like Trimper’s Rides and Dolle’s Candyland. You can also see an old boardwalk rolling chair of the 1920’s and vintage icons of an era gone by, like Laughing Sal from the old Fun House on Worcester Street and Bruno, the bulldog that would dart out from his house providing a scare to those who would walk too close, all in good fun of course. Other areas of the museum house exhibits from a variety of topics that are all reflective of the heart and soul of Ocean City. You will even find a collection of artifacts recovered from offshore wrecks like the African Queen and the Andrea Doria. Be sure to see the interesting exhibit of “sand.” The collection includes samples from all over the world offering a bird’s eye view of how unique beaches really are. Celebrating 20 years of family fun on the Eastern Shore!
OCBP Captain, Butch Arbin

Inside Ocean City
2015
II
n the fall of 1972, a skinny teenager with flaming red hair walked into my physical education class. Mel Arbin was a young man eager to learn, possessing an outstanding athletic ability, and a true leader. He soon joined the Parkville High School track team, coached by yours truly. As an athlete he excelled in every track event in which he competed. He did well in the pole vault, and the 400 meter dash. After completing the dash in 51 seconds in high school, he went on to improve his own personal best to 48 seconds on the University of Maryland’s track team, as a scholar athlete. After college graduation, Mel began a very successful teaching career. He received numerous awards for his teaching abilities and was even named physical education teacher of the year in Charles County. He moved forward in his career, working with at risk students, managing a technology department and even teaching aerospace engineering. Mel is currently assigned to the Charles County central administration office where he oversees the engineering program and supports all other Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives. He has even instructed graduate courses at his alma mater, the University of Maryland. Mel (Butch) Arbin actually leads a duel life. When not at his teaching post, Mel serves at the Captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol (OCBP). That same young athlete, at the age of 15, visited Ocean City with his family one summer. He was fascinated by the duties of the life guards and tried out for a position. After passing the required OCBP test, he stayed in town, after his family returned home, for the remainder of the summer. As would be Mel’s nature, he moved through the ranks and stepped into the role of Captain of the Beach Patrol. He would move the group forward with new ideas and take the OCBP to the next level. Butch provided CPR and first aid training for all employees. He was increasingly visible on television educating swimmers about rip currents and other beach threats. You can still, often find Butch offering campfire talks on the beach about beach safety, ever continuing his message. The Ocean City Beach Patrol has become such a leader in Surf Rescue Technology and employee education, that it sets the pace along the eastern seaboard and is often emulated by other beach patrol units; all in part because of the dedication and leadership of Butch Arbin. Butch is responsible for the designated surfing beaches in Ocean City. His goal was to find a safe way for surfers and swimmers to enjoy the entire beach day, not just surfing before 10:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. After years of negotiation with the Town of Ocean City and local vendors, Butch succeeded in the design of Ocean City’s rotational surf beaches. A system that is fair to surfers and bathers alike. In response to the continued growth of surfing in town, in the summer of 2007, Butch was even able to negotiate a third, non-rotational beach the surfers could call home. Arbin continues to teach, not only in the classroom, but along the surf and sands of Maryland’s premier resort. He instills life habits that will shape the person and future of many young beach guards. Many become so dedicated to the OCBP that the group has many on staff whom have been there for decades. When Butch’s predecessor, Captain Robert Craig, passed away in 2009, Butch captured the essence of the Beach Patrol at his eulogy. He said,” One doesn’t really join the Beach Patrol, the Beach Patrol just gets into you. It’s very special.” Why do young men and women freely risk their lives to save others? It’s because of Captain Arbin’s leadership and the example set by the OCBP. It’s among the most respected organizations in Ocean City and among Beach Patrols up and down the eastern seaboard.

There’s more room to run, and frisbees are much easier to catch when there are no sunbathers to navigate. Please be sure to clean-up after your pooch. Off-season dates and clean-up laws are strictly enforced! Visit www.ococean.com for more on the rules. When Fido travels with you in season, you can both enjoy a romp at the Ocean City Dog Playground, located on 94th Street, bayside. The playground is divided into two sections; one for small dogs (under 28 lbs), the other for larger dogs (over 28 lbs). A Dog Pass Access Card is required for admission and is available from Ocean City Recreation and Parks, located at 125th Street, bayside. The front desk is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., closed on holidays. Dog Access Cards are available weekly and annually. All dogs must have proof of rabies vaccine and a valid dog license from a municipality. Details are available online at www.ococean.com or by calling 800-OCOCEAN. Ocean City also has several pet-friendly restaurants. Simply ask for a copy of Delmarva Unleashed at the front desk for more on where to find them.

Beach Safety
Lifeguards — Introduce your child to the lifeguard on your beach. Explaing to them that if they get lost, go to the nearest lifeguard and tell them that they are lost. The lifeguards will help family members reunite.
Bodyboarding — When bodyboarding or bodysurfing, keep your arms out in front of you and remain on the back half of the board. If you are using a leash, it should be attached to your wrist. Never dive headfirst into the water! The water may not be as deep as it looks. Never dive off of piers, rock jetties or surfboards. Diving in shallow water can be dangerous and can even cause you to become paralyzed.
Beach safety seminars are conducted daily by the Ocean City Beach Patrol.

Shorebreak — Stay away from the big waves that crash onto the shore. This is called “shore break” and the waves can hurt you. Shore break is a condition when large waves break directly on shore. These waves can throw swimmers onto the sand very hard. These waves are unpredictable and dangerous because they can cause shoulder, neck and back injuries to even the most experienced swimmer. When body surfing, it is recommended doing so with your head up and your arms out in front of your body to protect yourself.
Rip Currents — When people picture deadly threats at the beach, the heart-stopping image of a shark fin emerging from the water immediately comes to mind. However, beachgoers are 10 times more likely to be killed by a rip current than a shark attack. Rip currents are fast moving streams of water that knock swimmers off of their feet and drag them further away from shore. When this happens, it is best to swim with the current, not against it, as counterintuitive as it seems. Most victims of rip currents actually die of exhaustion, not drowning, because they tried to fight the rip current and ultimately lost. Swimmers are advised to swim parallel out of the current then back into the shore. Lightning — is the third deadliest threat for carefree sunbathers and swimmers every year. When a storm rolls in, beaches will often close: that’s because even though beaches are not as tall as skyscrapers, they are common places for lightning to strike. Get out of the water and leave the beach if you see lightning or hear thunder. The lifeguards are in constant communication with the National Weather Service and will clear the beach if lightning is near. Listen to the directions of the lifeguard at your beach at all times and do what they say. So when the clouds start forming and the winds begin to howl, don’t wait for it to blow over—pack up that umbrella and head home.
Jelly Fish — Most jellyfish in our area are not toxic enough to give you more than a little sting and a rash. If stung by a jellyfish, get a medical professional or marine animal expert to help determine the type of jellyfish to help assess the proper method of treatment. Sand Holes — You might want to think twice before digging that hold to China…beach dangers can occur in the sand as well as the surf! More people are killed or injured every year from a sand hole collapsing than a shark attack. When people dig really large holes, we’re talking multiple feet deep, they run the risk of the hole caving in on them. What’s more, the collapsing sand completely submerges the victim, leaving no evidence of what just occurred—a scary thought if no one was watching. Digging sand tunnels can also be dangerous and can collapse on the person digging the tunnel. How to avoid a sand trap? Don’t dig holes deeper than your knees and fill in any stray holes you may see at the beach.
Sunscreen — Remember to apply sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30, thirty minutes before going outdoors and again every two hours even if your sunscreen is waterproof. Apply sunscreen to your whole body; your bathing suit can move and expose unprotected skin. There is no such thing as all-day protection. Sunburn is the most common injury that happens to people at the beach. A blistering sunburn during adolescence doubles the chance of developing skin cancer later in life. Fluids — When you are outside in warm weather, your body needs plenty of water. Remember to drink lots of water even if you are not thirsty. Dehydration can be a serious problem, so drink plenty of liquids. Water is best.

Assateague Island National Seashore
A A
ssateague Island is managed by three official park agencies. Assateague Island National Seashore is cared for and managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Visitors to the park in Virginia enjoy the beach, plus find opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (established in 1943). The beach, wildlife, dunes, wetlands and marsh islands are protected for public outdoor recreation use and enjoyment. Like all barrier islands, Assateague has changed in form over the years. The structure of barrier islands is determined by movement of sand in the littoral zone, the land-facing side of the island. At one time, the island was connected to the lowest point of Fenwick Island, DE. However, in August 1933, a hurricane created an inlet south of Ocean City, Maryland. This inlet separated the two landforms. Normally, it would have silted back due to the littoral drift that ran from north to south. However, after the storm, between 1933 and 1935 a permanent system of artificial jetties was built to preserve the inlet as a navigation channel. As a result, the island has drifted considerably westward, and the two landmasses are now over 0.62 miles (1.00 km) apart. While this process has benefitted Ocean City, creating wider beaches and better fishing access, it caused erosion problems on Assateague. Between 1933 and the early 1960s, federal interest in creating a national seashore on the island alternated with periodic pushes for development. In 1950, a 15 mile section of the Maryland side of Assateague was platted for development, and a paved road, Baltimore Boulevard, was constructed to traverse the new development. A storm in 1962 destroyed or covered most of Baltimore Boulevard, and many of the structures on the island were destroyed. Although some private landowners on the island supported re-development, by this time the state of Maryland generally supported a national seashore and legislation was introduced in the United States Congress. After Congressional efforts did not produce final 68

legislation in 1964, new legislation in 1965 was successful and Assateague Island National Seashore was formed. In 1962, Assateague Island National Seashore was established for the purpose of protecting Assateague Island in the states of Virginia and Maryland. The National Park Service and Fish & Wildlife Service help protect Assateague Island's splendor. Assateague Island National Seashore is administered to provide for recreational use and enjoyment consistent with the perpetuation and maintenance of the seashore's natural environment. Assateague is vital for resting and feeding migratory shorebirds and other abundant bird species. Over 320 species of birds can be found here. Assateague Island is a priceless seashore ecosystem and a sustainable resource that all visitors can appreciate. Assateague Island is a great vacation destination within easy reach for many East Coast residents. Sightseeing cruises, kayak tours, crabbing, bird watching, fishing, hunting, biking and other activities continually make this a paradise for visitors that enjoy outdoor recreation. Assateague Island has over 37 miles of beautiful beach. This is considered one of best beaches on the entire East Coast. Search for seashells as you walk the pristine white sands, swim in the picturesque waves along the Atlantic coastline or just relax on Assateague's vast unspoiled beaches. The Assateague Lighthouse is on the way to the beach and it is one of the most famous in the nation. You will find nearby amenities at Chincoteague Island and Ocean City such as seafood restaurants and lodging in the form of hotels, cottages, beach houses, campgrounds and bed & breakfasts. Visitor attractions and a relaxing atmosphere make Assateague Island a great destination. Be prepared to have fun, and you may want to visit Assateague again on your next vacation. Assateague wild ponies have roamed the beaches, pine forest, and salt marsh of Assateague Island since the 1600's. Assateague Island National Seashore has a combined total of over 300 wild ponies in Maryland and Virginia. Some people believe the horses
arrived on Assateague's shores when a Spanish galleon ship (with a cargo of horses) sank offshore. Others believe the horses arrived by early colonial settlers that allowed them to graze there. A Spanish ship wreck was discovered recently in the waters off Assateague which lends credit to the first theory. The ponies have become well-adapted and enjoy the solitude Assateague Island offers. Marsh and sand dune grasses, rosehips, bayberry twigs and persimmons supply the bulk of their food. Assateague ponies are often found feeding on the salt marsh cord grass along Assateague's western shoreline. When traveling by boat, you may encounter Assateague ponies along extensive bay habitats and pine forest of the 37 mile barrier island. Both Maryland and Virginia sides of Assateague have wild ponies, each has a herd of about 160. A fence at the Maryland/Virginia state line separates the two herds. The wild ponies of Assateague are usually seen in groups of about 5-10 animals. The National Park Service and Fish & Wildlife Service have conducted resource management studies to ensure the wild horse population is maintained at a level the seashore environment of Assateague can tolerate. Resource management techniques are different in Maryland than in Virginia when it comes to maintaining a healthy population of wild ponies. In Maryland, some female horses annually undergo a contraceptive vaccine administered through a dart gun. This has proven to reduce high pregnancy rates with no harmful side effects. Wild horses in Virginia are part of the Annual Pony Swim. Started in 1924, approximately 150 wild horses are rounded up on Assateague the last Wednesday in July. The horses swim across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island where an auction takes place to reduce their population on Assateague. After many of the foals are sold, the remaining herd swims back to Assateague a couple days later. These management techniques reduce the impact the horses pose to their natural environment and help provide a sustainable resource for
future generations. When excess numbers are removed from the island and they are placed into human ownership, they adapt quickly to domestication. Made famous by Marguerite Henry in her children's book Misty of Chincoteague, the animals are popular tourist attractions and subjects for photography. Large populations of birds inhabit the island, including American Oystercatcher, Great Blue Heron, and Snowy Egret. There are over 320 species that are known to inhabit the island during some portion of the year. These include gulls, terns, and other shorebirds along with raptors, water birds, and waterfowl. The Piping Plover is a threatened species that nests on Assateague. The feral horse population of Assateague Island is alternately known as the Assateague horse in Maryland and the Chincoteague pony in Virginia. This distinction, made both on per-breed and per-individual basis, is sometimes a matter of disagreement. The traditional definition of a horse or a pony is based on whether the animal in question falls over or under 14.2 hands. The equines on the island tend to be under 14.2, but have a horse phenotype. It is argued that their relatively small size is primarily due to environmental, rather than genetic conditions. Two Spanish shipwrecks are part of the history of Assateague Island National Seashore. Wrecked in 1750, the La Galga beached at Assateague Island while escorting Spanish merchants from Cuba. A second ship thought to be the transport vessel Juno was lost in 1802. Even though both lie off the coast near Assateague Island, hidden from view within an American park, the ships remain the property of the Spanish government. Visitors can see artifacts from the wrecks at the park visitor center. The tragic fates of the Juno and the La Galga are testaments to the dangers trans-Atlantic travelers faced when they sailed between Spain and its colonies. Assateague Island itself was an English colony and later became part of the United States.

The Hurricane of 1933
Excerpt from “Vanishing Ocean City” by Bunk Mann
TT

History & Culture
he Hurricane of 1933 was the single most important event in the history of Ocean City. It created the Inlet, ended the railroad era, and separated Assateague from Ocean City forever. The creation of the Inlet caused the end of the pound fishing camps and made possible a The Salisbury Times printed an “Extra” edition on August 24, 1933, commercial harbor in West Ocean City. The deep sea sports fishing industry was born and withto announce the widespread damage caused by the storm. in a few years Ocean City would become known as “The White Marlin Capital of the World.” Officially a hurricane (the National Weather Service did not assign names to tropical storms back in 1933) its low force winds caused many locals to refer to it simply as “The Storm.” A few realized the treasure that had been given them on August 23rd in the form of the new inlet and plans were quickly made to preserve it. Because of the Great Depression and the coming interruption in tourism due to World War II much of the benefit of this connection to the ocean would not be immediately realized. In time however it would do much to change a small seasonal resort and fishing village into a modern regional destination. Without the Inlet, Ocean City would be a much different place today. Ocean City was a small town in 1933 with a year-round population of less than 600. The tourist season was Memorial Day to Labor Day and the town shut down immediately afterwards. There was no “second season.” “You could fire a cannon down Baltimore Avenue the day after Labor Day and not hit a soul,” remembered Ocean City local the late Mary “Boots” Mason. In the southern part of town the commercial fishing camps stretched from S. 1st Street to S. 7th Street. In the years before the Inlet, wooden boats were launched through the surf to reach the fish pounds a mile or so offshore. This was dangerous and backbreaking work and not a job for the timid. In the late 1920’s there had been talk of dredging a man-made Inlet between the ocean and the bay but money was no longer available due to the national economic crisis. The railroad had played a major role in Ocean City since 1876 and crossed a wooden trestle bridge to enter town on S. Division Street. The train brought pasPhoto courtesy Rick Cropper sengers to the hotels and materials to supply the stores and fishing camps. The Inlet was formed by water from the bay cutting through to the ocean and not, as many Most of early Ocean City had been built with lumber carried across Sinepuxent Bay on trains. The 57-year-old railroad bridge was the supply line for the fish believe, from the storm surge of the ocean. In this view the Sinepuxent Bay is in the rear and the sandy area is the beach near the ocean. Remains of the railroad tracks and a few of the fish camps as trains carried the barrels of fresh fish north to Philadelphia and New camps can still be seen as the Inlet is being formed on August 24th, 1933. York City. Without the railroad the pound fishing camps could not survive.

This aerial view taken on August 25, 1933, shows downtown Ocean City still flooded and impassible to vehicles. The wide street in the foreground is Worcester Street. People can be seen walking through knee deep water and there are several shanties that washed across the bay during the storm laying on the edge of Worcester Street. The railroad depot can be seen in the upper right of the photo.
Taken on August 24, 1933, this historic photo shows the birth of the Inlet. Bay waters rushing to the ocean cut an inlet between S. 4th and S. 5th Streets and undermined the railroad tracks leading to the pound fishing camps in the background.
Ocean City was open for business in 1933. Even though most of the country was in the grip of the Great Depression the Boardwalk was crowded and the hotels and boarding house full. Three major hotels had opened in the past three years – the Commander, the Stephen Decatur, and the George Washington – and the town had extended the Boardwalk north to 15th Street. Trimper’s was busy as usual and people lined up to ride their popular “Whip” attraction. The Alaska Stand had opened that summer and rolling chairs and Dolle’s salt water taffy were popular on the Boardwalk. Kids laughed and screamed in Jester’s Fun House and on Worcester Street the Capital Theatre featured movies with Douglas Fairbanks, Buster Keaton, and Clark Gable. In spite of the Depression, business was good in Ocean City. It was not business, however, but the weather that had been Ocean City’s biggest problem that summer. With only a three-month tourist season no businessman or hotel owner could afford to lose any days to bad weather and in the summer of 1933 there had already been five rainy weekends. As Labor Day and the end of the season approached no one was happy to hear that a tropical storm was brewing in the south Atlantic on August 17th. There were no computer generated forecasts or maps in those days and weather forecasting was in its infancy; by August 19th the fringes of the storm had reached the Maryland coastline and rain was falling in Ocean City. The rain continued to fall and by noon on Monday, August 21st, over 10 inches had fallen. The back bays and streams were overflowing and the Sinepuxent Bay was swollen. Water had backed up to Golf Course Road and at the foot of the approach to the State Roads Bridge that carried automobile traffic into Ocean City between Worcester Street and the mainland. People began to realize that something bad was about to happen as the wind picked up and the streets flooded throughout downtown. By Tuesday afternoon a voluntary evacuation had begun. The Eastern Shore Times reported, “The most spectacular feature of the storm was the exodus from the resort which began late Tuesday and reached its height in the forenoon of Wednesday. About two thousand persons came over from Ocean City on Wednesday with 1000 to 1500 of them finding accommodations in the hotels and private homes in Berlin. It is said there was not a home in Berlin that did not provide for some of the visitors.” The newspaper also reported, “Occupants of cottages in the upper part of the city (4th to 15th Street in those days) found their places so surrounded by water that they donned their bathing suits to get out and many later appeared in swimming garb in the Berlin hotels.” Although many left, others stayed in Ocean City and rode out the hurricane in their homes. The storm passed off the coast in the late Inside Ocean City

afternoon and the winds and rain continued into the evening. The winds at their peak never exceeded 68 mph but as they shifted and came out of the west pushed the swollen bay waters eastward. The water trapped in the Sinepuxent Bay found the lowest spot along the Ocean City beach and broke through the pound fishing camps between S. 4th Street and S. 5th Street. On the night of August 23, 1933 the Inlet was born and Ocean City was separated from Assateague forever. The fishing camps were wiped out as water rushed from the bay to the ocean. Recalls former mayor Roland “Fish” Powell, “the water flowed from the bay to the ocean to form the Inlet and not the other way around. Most people today don’t know that that’s how it happened.” Five blocks north of the new Inlet another event that would change Ocean City was taking place. The draw span of the railroad bridge was hit by a houseboat which had been swept against it in the storm. The bridge collapsed and pieces of it floated around the bay and through the Inlet. The railroad was dealt a second blow as its major customer in 1933 was the pound fishing industry. Prior to the storm there were seven fishing camps on the south end of town and all shipped their product to market via the railroad. On the morning of August 24th only one camp had not been totally destroyed. To make matters worse, the tracks had extended down Philadelphia Avenue as far as S. 7th Street. Where the Inlet had cut through near S. 4th Street the tracks had been undercut and this area widened with each tide. Within hours the tracks buckled and several boxcars were swept into the water. Both the railroad bridge and the fishing camps themselves were gone. Recalls eyewitness Floyd “Doc” Turner, “I remember watching the tracks bend and then the boxcars fall in. The locomotives were not there but the boxcars were ready to be loaded with fish.” At first the Inlet was small – less than 50 feet wide and less than 7 feet deep. As the bay waters continued to rush to the ocean (some say it continued for three days) they widened it and eventually the Inlet spanned three blocks. On August 24th few saw this as a blessing; most were just shocked at the damage throughout Ocean City. Destruction was everywhere. The Boardwalk was ripped up and water covered the streets downtown. Flooding was most severe in the low lying areas along Philadelphia Avenue. Electricity was lost for two days and those who stayed in town had only the use of candles, kerosene lamps, and flashlights. Cooking was less of a problem because many still relied on woodstoves in that era. The only telephone service was between Ocean City and Berlin and phone service to

The”State Roads Bridge” entered at Worcester Street and became one of the casualties of the hurricane. It was out of service for three days following the storm and passable only by foot during that time. Repaired in time for the Labor Day Weekend, this bridge was the only way in or out of Ocean City for the remainder of the ‘33 season.
Salisbury, Snow Hill and Pocomoke was interrupted for several days. Mail delays occurred throughout Worcester County due to flooding and road washouts and in Public Landing a major amusement park was completely destroyed by the hurricane. The biggest problem to be faced right after the storm was the need to quickly repair the “State Roads Bridge.” This was the only automobile route into Ocean City in 1933 and entered the town at Worcester Street. It had suffered a partial washout on its mainland side and, with the nearby railroad bridge destroyed, left Ocean City isolated to all but pedestrian traffic. Working around the clock under the supervision of Phillip “Pete” Cooper, a crew from the Maryland State Highway Department repaired the bridge by jerry-rigging a 30 yard barrier of telephone poles to replace the sections that had flooded away. It was open for traffic in only three days. On Labor Day Weekend cars were pouring into town, the hotels were full and the Boardwalk crowded. Locals and visitors alike marveled at the new Inlet which by the weekend had grown to over 200 feet wide. Talk had already began about plans to keep it open. On August 31st US Senator Milliard Tydings and Congressman Alan Goldsborough met with the Federal Public Works Board to request that the Inlet be kept open by building a jetty system to preserve it. The Public Works Board quickly approved the project to take advantage of nature’s bounty and to relieve unemployment on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It was expected that as many as 10,000 jobs might be created to help build the jetties and deepen the existing inlet. On September 14, 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved the project with work to begin immediately under control of the War Department and the Army Corps of Engineers. It was a great day for Ocean City and the beginning of the modern era. The Hurricane of 1933 had provided the town with a magnificent gift. “The storm hit in the daylight and lasted into the night. It was frightful – loud and scary with waves cutting through town. I was 15 years old and I just hoped our house would stay up.” (Esther Pusey Carney) “We were living at 102 St. Louis Avenue and it kept raining so hard. The Coast Guard came with a lifeboat to get us out but my father wouldn’t leave. Since my mother wouldn’t leave him, we all stayed.” (Lilly Farlow)

“My future husband, Turner Cropper, was 16 years old and lived on Dorchester Street at St. Louis Avenue and the bay. When the storm started he tied his rowboat to his bedpost through the window – it was still there the next day after the storm had passed.” (Marion Cropper) “I’ve always seen it as the signal event for Ocean City; everything changed after the Inlet was cut. It became a resort and a destination for sport fishermen where before it had been a fishing village for the pound fishermen.” (John Whaley)
As the flood waters receded, sand filled the streets of Ocean City. This car was one of many that had to be dug out following the storm.

“ ike the traveling medieval troupe that brought their shows from the cities to the villages on the back of a wagon, this traveling theater group brings theater to the people.” Created in 2009 by Ocean City native, director Kyler Taustin, the Brown Box Theatre Project presents a show you won’t want to miss. The full professional set is brought to life by many talented actors from a variety of backgrounds. This theatre group has brought its energetic productions to Maryland’s Eastern Shore for the past six years. When asked by Inside Ocean City “why Brown Box,” there were responses from the actors that demonstrated a true passion for the craft. “We love the fast paced, exciting presentations Brown Box produces, offering a huge variety of productions both large and small,” says actor Patrick Curran. “I love the fact that we are expanding awareness of the medium,” says education coordinator Rosalie Norris. “Brown Box offers so much more than a community theatre,” she continues. Actor Emma Weigand, a three year veteran of the group, tells us that she loves the travel aspect of the Brown Box Theatre Project and how each presentation of a play is unique as they acclimate into the individual surroundings of each set-up. “The diversity of each event, and our adaptations to the actual surroundings, help us make each presentation unique,” says Taustin. Not only does the group perform within Ocean City and surrounding communities, they now take their show into the classroom, introducing young minds to the magic of true theatre. “We love to expose people to the acting arts, to share our craft with people who may never have had the opportunity to experience the theatre,” says Taustin. We are even taking our shows to other countries and it’s so exciting,” he continues. The company’s productions change each year and with the seasons. If you are here during September, when they are here for their annual productions, or if you have plans to return at another time, be sure to visit their Facebook page to see what shows are coming up. Some events are ticketed, others like their Shakespeare productions, are free of charge. Take the family; the plays are fun and engaging for everyone. www.brownboxtheatre.org

s the Summer season of 1980 got underway, Ed and Kathy Burke were busy putting the finishing touches on their latest venture; a new bar and restaurant. June 27th was the big opening day. The doors opened on what would become an Ocean City Boardwalk legend; The Brass Balls Saloon. The Burke’s brought a wealth of experience to their new venture. Their earlier boardwalk endeavors include a cache of Ocean City memories: Casey’s Games (most notably at the pier, but also at Trimper’s Rides and Jolly Rogers), By-The-Sea Wear and Joker’s Wild at the Rideau, Journey’s End Hotel and Love’s Lemonade (with locations at the pier, the Rideau and in the street level of what is now the Brass Balls). They also owned numerous rentals around town. In their pre-Ocean City lives, Ed was an electrician who installed the lighting of the Verrazano Bridge in NYC during it’s construction and Kathy ran a motel and restaurant in Seaside Heights, NJ.

The Burke’s were aficionados of antiques and unusual items. Their many travels were filled with visits to local flea markets, auctions and pawn shops. Their collection decorated their homes, offices and even filled two warehouses. They devised a way for their new venture to be a showcase for these items; a restaurant with a pawn shop theme. Even the name “Brass Balls” is a nod toward the universal symbol for pawn shops as the iconic 3 brass balls hang outside many of the world’s pawn shops. Their favorite items, collected from around the world, were augmented with items brought in by customers in exchange for drinks and meals. In the early years, many of the items decorating the walls had pawn shop tickets hanging from them detailing the price paid to the customer. Their plans and hard work became reality as the doors opened that June day. It was the first of many crazy days and nights. Their opening day was so busy that servers couldn’t

squeeze through the main floor. They had to take the food out the kitchen’s back door and run it through the alley to the boardwalk to get to the customers on the deck. By that evening the food and cold beer had been sold out. The guests hung in there until closing time drinking warm beer. They didn’t seem to mind; they were having a great time. The business continued to grow and in the next decade the second and third floors of the hotel were converted to restaurant and bar use, and the Bad Ass Cafe was born. That era also saw The Jackspot on Coastal Highway at 73rd Street undergo renovations and join the family business as Big Pecker’s Bar & Grill. In 2006, the torch was passed to the next generation. Ed and Kathy’s son, Steve, and daughter in-law, Debbie, took the reigns of the Brass Balls Saloon and Bad Ass Cafe Debbie tells Inside Ocean City that she just loves the business and what the family has built. She loves seeing visitors return year after year. Many make the Brass Balls a regular part of their Ocean City vacations; some coming for multiple visits a day. “We’ve had couples get married here and come back to celebrate their anniversaries each year. Many a romance has started here, as patrons, and also our employees, meet and later marry.” She continues, “just so many good things happen here.” When asked what it is that makes the establishment so successful, her reply was simple, “we serve good food, good drinks and offer friendly service, in a fun and beautiful location.”
There is some debate as to exactly when the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce was formed. It is generally believed that a group of businessmen conceived the idea in the late 1940's. Jill Cordes & Marc Silverstein, with Food Network, offers the best summary of this exquisite dining experience. “Tanned and fit, with a hearty Italian accent, owner Fausto DiCarlo makes it a point to greet every guest - especially women. In true European style, he bestows them with a friendly kiss, the men receive a firm handshake. He's become famous for it. Women remind him if he forgets. Given the large crowds at his restaurant, this guy could make Richard Dawson blush. Talented enough to have once been a cooking sensation in the Philadelphia area, DiCarlo relocated to this vacation playground in 1993. Fausto figured he could work hard in the summer and enjoy golf in the off-season. He might have a six handicap, but he's busy year 'round. Ristorante Antipasti is a first-class Italian restaurant, but the fact that it's in a resort town best known for all-you-can-eat buffets, makes it a true standout. Fausto's signature dish, Timballo Di Mamma, is made of thin layers of homemade pasta filled with ground veal, tomatoes and a bechamel sauce. DiCarlo used to call it a "Sunday Dish," and offer it as an occasional special because it required so much work. However, it became so popular, he had to add it to the menu. Another mouth-watering speciality is the Garlic Steak, a center-cut filet covered in Italian herbs and then grilled black. You won't find this anywhere else. Golf will have to wait. There are guests to be greeted and many kisses to be bestowed.”

Tipping in the Resort
PP
roper tipping shows others that you’re “socially groomed.” You’re not a cheapskate nor a show-off. It is, however, better to over tip than under tip. There are critical limits on both ends of the spectrum. Proper tipping also ensures good service, particularly from a bartender. If there is a party of four or more, tip the bartender $10 on your first round. He/she will remember your generosity and pay particular attention to the group. Thereafter tip the standard for each round; $1 for a beer, $2 for a mixed drink. The amount of gratuity depends on the service being provided and is usually a percentage of the total bill. If a service is already expensive, and you cannot afford to tip the proper percentage, then you cannot afford the service. The acceptable tip for food servers, cocktail servers, and bartenders is 15% to 20% of the total bill. The American wait staff is paid an average hourly wage of $3.63 by their employer. If about $145.00, for a week’s worth of carting food and beverage back and forth from grumpy kitchen cooks to waiting customers sounds low to you, that’s because it is. The National Restaurant Association explains this issue, by citing the federal minimum wage law, which allows employers to pay employees, who receive tips, a lesser wage. Employees, who are tipped, count on gratuities to make up for this huge difference. You may feel that paying your waiter’s salary should not be your responsibility, but if you are eating out, you will be expected to tip and to do so appropriately. If you are hesitant to tip because you received poor service, do not skip out on gratuity; instead ask to speak to the manager. Most will be very appreciative to learn of less than quality service, and sometimes all the wait staff needs is a little direction to improve their level of service. Other than wait staff at a restaurant, there are others in the resort who appreciate tips for quality service. In some instances you will find a “tip jar” in a central location. Proper standards are very much appreciated here too. See our tip guide for those standards. Bellboy $1-$2 Cabbie 15% of the total fare Caddy 50% of the caddy fee Dock Boy $5

Why the Eastern Shore of Maryland is a
Craft Beer Destination O W
cean City and the surrounding Delmarva Peninsula are some of the fastest emerging brewery destinations on the East Coast and comprise the focus of ShoreCraftBeer.com, a new site that brings all the information you need to experience the Eastern Shore and the many craft beers being produced here. If you don’t think you like beer, it’s time you tried again... “A man who doesn’t care about the beer he drinks may as well not care about the bread he eats. Beer may have been man’s staple diet before bread was invented, and these two staffs of life are as comparable as they are closely related. Each can offer an everyday experience or a rare pleasure. In each case, what we seek is a measure of what we deserve.” —Michael Jackson’s The World Guide To Beer, 1977 Because the Shore is home to countless miles of spectacular scenery, quaint small towns with historic pasts, ample opportunities for biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and exploring nature, you will want to come for a getaway. Because it is also home to 18 local breweries producing award-winning craft beer of all styles and flavors, you’ll want to relish in the unique, local offerings. We guarantee you’ll be hard pressed to find a greater concentration of locally produced beer, great hotels and inns, phenomenal food, outdoor activities, and breathtaking scenery anywhere in the country. We invite you to experience Delmarva and our Shore in a unique way: as a craft beer destination with so much more! A recent national beer boom has given rise to an array of new breweries offering unique atmospheres and creative takes on craft beer. Delmarva’s microbrewery heritage can be traced back to 1995 and the launch of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, DE. When it first opened, Dogfish Head was the smallest commercial brewery in America, but has since grown in both size and stature into a nationally known powerhouse in the craft beer world. Dogfish Head serves nearly 20 styles of ‘Off Centered Ales,’including the iconic 60 Minute IPA in, over 25 states and now has a brewpub in Rehoboth Beach to go along with its production brewery, both of which are less than an hour from Ocean City.

Another nationally known and distri buted brand migrated to Delmarva in the early 2000s when Fordham relocated from Maryland’s capital of Annapolis to Delaware’s capital of Dover. Fordham, which consolidated operations with Old Dominion Brewery in 2009, not only brews beers for Maryland’s Rams Head Group but is widely distributed throughout the region. Seeing the success of their Delaware brethren, Maryland restaurateurs Tom and John Knorr took over an abandoned grocery store in Delmar, DE in 2009 and transformed it into a brew house known as the Evolution Craft Brewing Company. Dedicating their brewery to the highest quality ingredients and true craftsmanship, the Knorr brothers set out to change what beer can be. Since then, Evo’s success led the Knorrs to relocate to a bigger facility in nearby Salisbury, which includes a production brewery, tasting room, and a full-service gastropub featuring an upscale menu, sourced from the bounty of local ingredients, designed to pair with Evo’s fantastic beers. The Knorrs also own numerous restaurants throughout the lower Eastern Shore and Baltimore area that feature great food and great beer. Evolution may be the most widely distributed of the Eastern Shore’s breweries, but it was not the first. Following in the footsteps of the early pioneers, and fueled by a rapidly growing local beer culture, many other homebrewers and business owners sought to join the beer movement and breweries have been popping up across Delmarva since 2011. Now, you’ll find 5 breweries in Ocean City, with 7 more along Maryland’s Eastern Shore and six more in Delaware within an hour of the beach. In Ocean City, you’ll find Ocean City Brewing Company at 55th Street and Coastal Highway; Assawoman Bay Brewing Co. at 45th Street in the TapHouse complex; Backshore Brewing at 10th Street and the Boardwalk; Fin City located inside of Hooper’s Crab House on Route 50 just before the bridge onto the island.; and De Lazy Lizard Brewing Co., which produces beer for their wildly popular restaurant at 1st Street and the Bay as well as local distribution.
Each of these breweries offer many varieties of local brews with unique atmospheres that reflect beach culture and Shore-lifestyle. Want to tour the breweries? Each Ocean City brewery is easily accessible by public transportation, allowing you to be responsible as you taste the best the beach has to offer. You can also find beers from these, and many other Delmarva breweries, on tap at your favorite Ocean City bar or restaurant. Look for the official ShoreCraftBeer.com ‘Local Beer Here’ decal to guide you to the establishments dedicated to serving craft beer and let the tasting begin. Venturing out of Ocean City, you’ll find numerous Maryland and Delaware brewery options within a short drive. Head east on Route 50 about 9 miles and you’ll find “America’s Coolest Small Town,” Berlin, Maryland. Here, Burley Oak Brewing Co, a small craft brewery, is producing award-winning beer in small batches. Burley Oak, which is rated as ‘world-class’ by Beer Advocate magazine, makes beer for beer drinkers and offers a wide range of distinctive brews. Take a trip south from Berlin to the historic waterman’s town of Crisfield and find the brand new Chesapeake Brewing Company; or head east and find Parsonsburg and the Tall Tales Brewing Co., which is known for its folklore inspired brews and brick oven pizza. Further up the Shore you’ll find Realerevival Brewing (RAR) in historic downtown Cambridge, the brand new Federal Brewing Co. slightly off the beaten path in Federalsburg, Md, and the Eastern Shore Brewing Co. in the historic mill complex in St. Michael’s, MD. Having opened in 2008, the Eastern Shore Brewing Company is the longest continually operating brewery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. In Delaware, you’ll find 3rd Wave Brewing Co., which opened its doors in 2012 in Evolution’s old brewing space in Delmar and is now establishing its own legacy centered around “Good friends, good waves, and great beer.” You can also visit the Mispillion River Brewing in nearby Milford and 16 Mile Brewery in historic Georgetown, DE, just half an hour from Ocean City, MD. You will see bike tours combined with craft beer and brewery tours. You can find hotel packages that feature craft beer from St. Michael’s to Crisfield and throughout Ocean City. You will find craft beer events throughout the year scattered all over the Eastern Shore from Delaware to Virginia. Come back to the Shore for a Craft Beer Getaway and be sure you watch ShoreCraftBeer.com for all the information you need to ensure a fabulous experience with award winning, locally produced craft beer; spectacular oceanfront rooms or rooms with water views in historic towns; and enough activities to occupy your days enjoying Maryland’s bounty.

hen Matt Bayline and his partner Jr Emanuele took over Duffy’s Tavern 11 years ago, the business was already an established landmark. For Matt, who grew up amongst a family that included Chef’s, Restaurateurs and Beer Purveyors, it was only logical that he carve his niche in town and this was his chance. After honing his skills at Fager’s Island and Buxy’s Salty Dog, Matt was ready to move on. He wanted a place of his own and the combination of his talents, combined with Jr’s, who had been perfecting his skills at Fagers for the previous 15 years, seemed the perfect match. Both brought something unique to the table. Matt offered the OC Local perspective and Jr, a Pittsburgh native, the needs and wants of the frequent visitor. It was a successful “two-world” blend. “Our plan was to take the existing bar and make it a place where Irish meets the beach," says Matt. “We did renovations from floor to ceiling, and added lots of windows for a bright, cheery environment. We implemented modern services as we brought a vintage bar into the 21st Century,” he continues. The pub advanced again in 2008, when they expanded the outdoor patio providing more casual seating and a larger area for family gatherings. The expansion area is also is a great place to enjoy outdoor pub games like cornhole and ring toss during warmer months. The year 2015 will see even more from the growing Irish pub, with the addition of breakfast services year round. “There aren’t a lot of places to have breakfast in North Ocean City during the off- season,” says Matt. “We wanted to fill a need and expand options for our seasonal clientele too. Lots of people will have breakfast before heading to the beach and come back for a drink when they dust off the sand,” stated Matt. While the physical attributes of Duffy’s have evolved over the years, the quality of food has always been superior. Long time Chef, Beverly Criner has been over-seeing the kitchen for more than 30 years. Combining original Irish fare, Duffy's offers signature sandwiches, sizzling steaks and only the freshest seafood. Matt is proud of all they have accomplished in the last decade. Jr is not on site as much these days, he spends his days enriching youngs minds as a local teacher. They are both avid sports fans and still complimentary, as Matt roots for Maryland's own, Baltimore Ravens and Orioles, and Jr true to home, supports the Steelers and Penn State. Duffy’s Tavern, now 30 years old, is a true Ocean City landmark. Many locals, particularly in the Montego Bay community, refer to it as the “corner bar,” but Duffy’s is so much more. It’s great for the entire family. There are even arcade games for the kids and free Wi-Fi these days. While you will find lots of Irish choices for your dining experience, there are kids favorites prepared just the way they like. Check them out on the corner of the Montego Bay Shopping Center on 130th St. Tell them we sent you!

Why Beer Certification is Coming to Ocean City
W W
ith 18 local breweries located in, or a short distance from, Ocean City, our resort area is one of the fastest growing craft beer destinations on the East Coast. As OC improves its local craft beer reputation, it’s imperative that bartenders and servers at bars and restaurants that carry local craft beer be able to educate beer drinkers. We want to ensure a visitor’s exploration of our local beer scene is an enjoyable experience. Too often light beer drinkers experimenting with local beer for the first time have a less than optimal experience due to ill informed or misguided choices about what to try. A poor first impression can turn a person off of all craft beer forever, so it’s essential to make sure their first tastes are memorable and pleasurable. Positive first impressions will allow beer drinkers to take an interest in the world of craft and be more adventurous, investing their time and money to explore new beers. Creating an exceptional craft beer experience for a first-timer hinges on a server’s ability to help that customer make informed choices and to alter the mindset that keeps many people loyal to one brand of light beer. This ability boils down to education about what constitutes craft beer, how it should be served, and why its worth the higher price tag. As the popularity of Ocean City’s beer scene grows, servers and bartenders must have strong working knowledge of beer styles, flavor profiles, terminology, proper serving technique, and what makes craft beer a better product. ShoreCraftBeer.com is teaming up with local brewers, the OCHMRA and the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce to develop a server certification program for 2015 aimed at providing bartenders and servers the knowledge they need to help customers make informed craft beer decisions. This certification program will be available for the first time in our region this year.

Certified beer servers will have a strong working knowledge of beer styles and the defining characteristics of each. Knowing the key ingredients, characteristics, and flavor profiles that differentiate IPAs, Stouts, Porters, Lagers, and other beer types can help quickly narrow down a guest’s preference from multiple- sometimes daunting- amounts of choices to a select few based on preferences about light vs. dark and bitter vs. sweet, and other layman's terms. A certified server will be able to help a guest decode the meanings of ABV (alcohol by volume), IBUs (International Bittering Units), and the other numerical scales used to define a beer’s characteristics on labels and menus. Helping a guest pick a beer higher or lower in alcohol content depending on the situation can greatly enhance the overall drinking experience, as can ensuring a guest picks beers appropriate for their preferred level of bitterness. Grasping important terminology- grassy, crisp, bitter, citrusy, roasty- and the beer styles they characterize is another essential part of the certification program. Knowing and understanding such terms allows servers to effectively communicate with guests and answer questions posed by more experienced craft beer drinkers looking for information to help narrow down which local products to try. Craft beer, which is as complex and diverse as fine wine, can highlight flavors in food, so understanding how the tastes of each play off each other is another important step to creating an enjoyable craft beer experience. Knowing how grains produce sweetness
and hops create bitterness allows servers to make recommendations to guests about what beers pair well with what they’re eating. Proper recommendations can encourage further experimentation with food and beer pairings. Another essential skill that will be mastered by certified craft beer servers is learning the art of a proper pour. To maximize the taste of a draft craft beer, the server must pour into the proper glassware at the proper temperature. Perhaps most importantly, a beer with the right head retention effectively releases aromas that get lost when poured improperly. Craft beer is fresher, healthier and more flavorful than its mass-produced counterparts and connosieurs and novices alike can have amazing experiences with it, whether at a brewery, bar or restaurant. These experiences available in Ocean City and along the Eastern Shore, can forever change the life of a beer drinker. If you want to be sure your exploration of the Ocean City beer scene is a memorable one, make sure to visit any bar or restaurant bearing the Shore Craft Beer Certified seal and let the tasting begin! For updates on our certification process and, eventually, a complete list of the bars and restaurants that have gone through the certification process in 2015, please check ShoreCraftBeer.com.
