cean City offers so many ways to enjoy the water, from our pristine beaches to the thrill of the watersports, there are numerous ways to make your own waves. You can rent powerboats, waverunners, paddleboards, kayaks, wind surfers and of course surfboards. You can deep sea fish, small boat fish, or just rent a boat to relax on the water. It’s simple…just call a marina! OC’s marinas have everything you need from bait, to rods and tackle, to sunblock and cold beer. All charter boats are licensed and certified by the Coast Guard, and our captains practice conservation. They will share not only helpful fishing advice, but will take time to share a special moment, such as a whale or dolphin sightings. Boats have different specialties, so check the docks and find out what’s biting and who’s catching, then cast off and have fun! Miles of beautiful estuaries, calm waters and an abundance of wildlife lie just west of Ocean City. Kayak tours are available almost any time of year, weather permitting, and are a wonderful way to explore the quieter side of the resort. Many outfitters staff Naturalist that are well versed on local flora and fauna. Guided tours are not only fun but educational as well. Some tours take you to Assateague Island, a nearby barrier island, where you can view the world famous ponies in their island habitat. Get an up close look at local aquatic life, while netting for small fish. It’s a hands on experience, no touch tank can match!

Tipping in the Resort P
P
roper tipping shows others that you’re “socially groomed.” You’re not a cheapskate nor a show-off. It is, however, better to over tip than under tip. There are critical limits on both ends of the spectrum. Proper tipping also ensures good service, particularly from a bartender. If there is a party of four or more, tip the bartender $10 on your first round. He/she will remember your generosity and pay particular attention to the group. Thereafter tip the standard for each round; $1 for a beer, $2 for a mixed drink. The amount of gratuity depends on the service being provided and is usually a percentage of the total bill. If a service is already expensive, and you cannot afford to tip the proper percentage, then you cannot afford the service. The acceptable tip for food servers, cocktail servers, and bartenders is 15% to 20% of the total bill. The American wait staff is paid an average hourly wage of $3.63 by their employer. If about $145.00, for a week’s worth of carting food and beverage back and forth from grumpy kitchen cooks to waiting customers sounds low to you, that’s because it is. The National Restaurant Association explains this issue, by citing the federal minimum wage law, which allows employers to pay employees, who receive tips, a lesser wage. Employees, who are tipped, count on gratuities to make up for this huge difference. You may feel that paying your waiter’s salary should not be your responsibility, but if you are eating out, you will be expected to tip and to do so appropriately. If you are hesitant to tip because you received poor service, do not skip out on gratuity; instead ask to speak to the manager. Most will be very appreciative to learn of less than quality service, and sometimes all the wait staff needs is a little direction to improve their level of service. Other than wait staff at a restaurant, there are others in the resort who appreciate tips for quality service. In some instances you will find a “tip jar” in a central location. Proper standards are very much appreciated here too. See our tip guide for those standards.

Odyssea Watersports
Celebrates 20 Years of Splashing Success
F F
rom a little-known jet ski rental to the largest Watersports facility in Ocean City, Odyssea Watersports has been making vacation memories for 20 years. In 1997, the Croker family from Arnold, MD; Ron, his wife Sheila and children Melissa and Timmy stumbled on the opportunity to purchase a small jet ski business, offering the chance to own their dream business. At the time they were doing the 9-5 thing, but as a family, they decided to take a chance and follow the family dream. Ron and Sheila felt that Melissa and Timmy were at the age where they would be able to serve as key roles in making the dream a reality and were involved from the very start. The Crokers were interested in building a family oriented watersports business in town, and treating customers like they were a part of the Croker family. From the beginning, the philosophy has been to offer a superior, personal experience. 50
Inside Ocean City
2017
The Crokers opened their business with just the four of them and only eight jet skis. Growth followed the exceptional customer experience, and new water activities were added to the mix. Things like parasailing, skat boats, and paddle boats, just to name a few. They took it one year at a time and eventually they began to see their hard work and passion pay off. Ron and his family started noticing that Odyssea Watersports was beginning to become a yearly tradition with a growing number of repeat visitors each year and the family dream had become a reality. Tragedy struck the family, in 2000, when Timmy tragically lost his life in a car accident. He was fun loving, hard working, a great baseball player, boat captain and a very important part of the Croker family and business. Then only seven years after Timmy had passed, Sheila, the matriarch of the family, lost her battle to Cancer. Sheila was the heartbeat of the family and company. When you walk through the gates of Odyssea, you may
notice a memorial garden with two benches, flowers, and a plaque in the middle for Tim and Sheila; they will always be a part of the business. Ron and Melissa had a hard decision to make regarding what to do with their business. As they discussed it, they knew that Sheila and Tim would want them to continue to move forward and through hard work, the love of family, passion, and a desire to make Odyssea Watersports succeed, they were able to keep the business growing. They kept the legacy of their family together and the heartbeat was felt again. The family has grown, with a son in law Justin, and daughters Samantha, Kayla and Riley. It’s beautiful to see this legacy passed down to the younger generations. You will find Sammy and Kayla running the paddleboards on the beach giving instructions and lessons and having the same passion their Grandparents did 20 years ago. Son-in-law Justin is now overseeing the daily on location operations with the same goals and excitement as the Crokers. Even their family dogs Dunkin and Mason can be seen playing with customers or swimming in the water. The 50th street location has changed quite a bit over the years to make it more comfortable and convenient for customers along with changes for their expanded offering of activities. Each year you will notice something fresh and fun! Odyssea Watersports continues its growth and now has two locations (Action Watersports on 52nd Street) offering Jet skis, Paddle Boards, Kayaks, Pontoon Boats and Night Paddle Board Glow Tours! Even with more locations, more activities and more employees the goal has always stayed the same; a family-oriented business, making sure each customer feels like family while enjoying their chosen activity. Celebrate with them as they have their 20th anniversary this season and become a part of their family!

Smith Island – A Change of Pace W W
hen you talk about visiting a water locked community, you probably think that it’s a total throwback in time. While Smith Island is far from the hustle and bustle of Ocean City in season, the community has all the charm of a simple lifestyle with the bustle of a real community of watermen, technology too! It’s a real environmental oasis. If you’re into Eco Tours, get your cruise to the Island booked now! 62

During season you will find kayaking, stand-up paddle boards and the unique adventure of Sea Glass Hunting! You can rent a bicycle or golf cart and explore the town of Ewell or ride through the wildlife preserve to Road Point. There are shellfish houses that dot the island and busy watermen preparing their catch to be transported to the mainland for your dining pleasure. It’s a glimpse of how your food really gets to table.
If you want to dine on the freshest catch, head to the Bayside Inn or Harborside Restaurant, both on the water, for some famous Smith Island crab cakes, soft crabs and more.Enjoying the local seafood is part of the experience. Smith Island Cruises is your primary method of conveyance to the Island. The boat makes daily trips during season and less frequent trips on the shoulder season. It leaves from another quaint water community called Crisfield and is about a 50 minute trip from OC.
Smith Island Cruises A Great Way To Spend the Day!
A
While aboard the ship, you can enjoy picturesque views as you soak up the rays or cool off in the shade of the deck below. The cruise is approximately 50 minutes each way and you will have about 2 ½ hours to explore the island once there. Not enough time? There are a few B&B’s on the island and an overnight stay will offer a wealth of time to enjoy all the island has to offer. There are golf carts and bicycle’s for rent and while there are cars and trucks on the island, golf carts are an excellent mode for island travel
Smith Island Cruise is a fun and inexpensive way to explore Maryland's last frontier, Smith Island. It’s also the home of the Maryland State Dessert, the famous Smith Island Layer Cake. So much to explore; museums, gift shops, restaurants and more! Bike and golf cart rentals available on the island. Leaves daily from Crisfield at 12:30 p.m. and leaves Ewell at 3:45 p.m. Tickets at the Capt. Tyler Motel (left after the Crisfield Fire Dept).

Beach Safety
Lifeguards — Introduce your child to the lifeguard on your beach. Explaing to them that if they get lost, go to the nearest lifeguard and tell them that they are lost. The lifeguards will help family members reunite.
Bodyboarding — When bodyboarding or bodysurfing, keep your arms out in front of you and remain on the back half of the board. If you are using a leash, it should be attached to your wrist. Never dive headfirst into the water! The water may not be as deep as it looks. Never dive off of piers, rock jetties or surfboards. Diving in shallow water can be dangerous and can even cause you to become paralyzed.
Beach safety seminars are conducted daily by the Ocean City Beach Patrol.
78

2017
Shorebreak — Stay away from the big waves that crash onto the shore. This is called “shore break” and the waves can hurt you. Shore break is a condition when large waves break directly on shore. These waves can throw swimmers onto the sand very hard. These waves are unpredictable and dangerous because they can cause shoulder, neck and back injuries to even the most experienced swimmer. When body surfing, it is recommended doing so with your head up and your arms out in front of your body to protect yourself.
Rip Currents — When people picture deadly threats at the beach, the heart-stopping image of a shark fin emerging from the water immediately comes to mind. However, beachgoers are 10 times more likely to be killed by a rip current than a shark attack. Rip currents are fast moving streams of water that knock swimmers off of their feet and drag them further away from shore. When this happens, it is best to swim with the current, not against it, as counterintuitive as it seems. Most victims of rip currents actually die of exhaustion, not drowning, because they tried to fight the rip current and ultimately lost. Swimmers are advised to swim parallel out of the current then back into the shore. Lightning — is the third deadliest threat for carefree sunbathers and swimmers every year. When a storm rolls in, beaches will often close: that’s because even though beaches are not as tall as skyscrapers, they are common places for lightning to strike. Get out of the water and leave the beach if you see lightning or hear thunder. The lifeguards are in constant communication with the National Weather Service and will clear the beach if lightning is near. Listen to the directions of the lifeguard at your beach at all times and do what they say. So when the clouds start forming and the winds begin to howl, don’t wait for it to blow over—pack up that umbrella and head home.
Jelly Fish — Most jellyfish in our area are not toxic enough to give you more than a little sting and a rash. If stung by a jellyfish, get a medical professional or marine animal expert to help determine the type of jellyfish to help assess the proper method of treatment. Sand Holes — You might want to think twice before digging that hold to China…beach dangers can occur in the sand as well as the surf! More people are killed or injured every year from a sand hole collapsing than a shark attack. When people dig really large holes, we’re talking multiple feet deep, they run the risk of the hole caving in on them. What’s more, the collapsing sand completely submerges the victim, leaving no evidence of what just occurred—a scary thought if no one was watching. Digging sand tunnels can also be dangerous and can collapse on the person digging the tunnel. How to avoid a sand trap? Don’t dig holes deeper than your knees and fill in any stray holes you may see at the beach.
Sunscreen — Remember to apply sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30, thirty minutes before going outdoors and again every two hours even if your sunscreen is waterproof. Apply sunscreen to your whole body; your bathing suit can move and expose unprotected skin. There is no such thing as all-day protection. Sunburn is the most common injury that happens to people at the beach. A blistering sunburn during adolescence doubles the chance of developing skin cancer later in life. Fluids — When you are outside in warm weather, your body needs plenty of water. Remember to drink lots of water even if you are not thirsty. Dehydration can be a serious problem, so drink plenty of liquids. Water is best.
Learn how to swim — If you don’t know how to swim, don’t go in the water! Inside Ocean City

Ocean Bowl Skate Park
T
The Ocean Bowl Skate Park celebrated its 40th Anniversary this past summer with an event where both the
younger and older skater generations turned out to rejoice the history of the oldest operating municipal skate park in the United States. Following the rise in popularity of skateboarding in the 1970s, the Ocean City Council banned skateboarding on the streets within City limits. This prompted many skaters and their parents to attend the next council meeting to ask that a space be provided for them to pursue their sport. By the first week of June, 1976, the park opened. At that time, the facility consisted of a four foot deep asphalt bowl which proved so successful that a larger bowl was quickly added. In 1984 this “big bowl was structurally weakened by successive tropical storms and was 104

removed the following year. It was succeeded by an eleven foot high, twenty eight foot wide metal-surfaced half pipe which served not only to replace the lost bowl, but also to respond to the changing demands of skateboarding and the huge popularity of vertical ramps at the time. The ramp and the small bowl stood for another ten years when finally, in 1997, due to time, wear and the current needs of skaters, the park was again in need of renovations. After long hours of planning and many meetings, the City Council along with a Skate Park Committee composed of local skaters,
business people, politicians and parents, came up with the resources to build the park that exists today. The old bowl and ramp were torn down in the fall of 1997 and the new park opened in July of 1998. Since the new park has opened in July of 1998 the Ocean Bowl Skate Park has been busy with many traveling demos, tours and skating contests. Each year, the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department provides skate camps, lessons and programs for young skaters to participate in with professional skaters. The Town of Ocean City has continued to maintain the Ocean Bowl Skate Park with upgrades and complete re-facing, including the Bowl & Vert Ramp in 2011. The Ocean Bowl continues the tradition of the oldest municipal skate park in the U.S. and stays current with the ever so changing sport of skateboarding. For more information on all that the Ocean Bowl Skate Park has to offer, including operating hours call 410-289-BOWL or visit the Ocean City Recreation and Parks website at www.oceancitymd.gov.

Agnello Rosmarino Lamb in a rosemary demi-glace Nodini di Vitello ai Pepi Veal chop with peppercorns, rosmarino and demi-glace Timballo Abruzzese Thin layers of pasta with ground veal, Buffalo Mozzarella and nutmeg Risotto Erotico al Pesce Lump crabmeat with saffron over Arborio rice Dove Sole A gourmet white fish, fileted table-side.
Jill Cordes & Marc Silverstein, with Food Network, offers the best summary of this exquisite dining experience. “Tanned and fit, with a hearty Italian accent, owner Fausto DiCarlo makes it a point to greet every guest - especially women. In true European style, he bestows them with a friendly kiss, the men receive a firm handshake. He's become famous for it. Women remind him if he forgets. Given the large crowds at his restaurant, this guy could make Richard Dawson blush. Talented enough to have once been a cooking sensation in the Philadelphia area, DiCarlo relocated to this vacation playground in 1993. Fausto figured he could work hard in the summer and enjoy golf in the off-season. He might have a six handicap, but he's busy year 'round. Ristorante Antipasti is a first-class Italian restaurant, but the fact that it's in a resort town best known for all-you-can-eat buffets, makes it a true standout. Fausto's signature dish, Timballo Di Mamma, is made of thin layers of homemade pasta filled with ground veal, tomatoes and a bechamel sauce. DiCarlo used to call it a "Sunday Dish," and offer it as an occasional special because it required so much work. However, it became so popular, he had to add it to the menu. Another mouth-watering speciality is the Garlic Steak, a center-cut filet covered in Italian herbs and then grilled black. You won't find this anywhere else. Golf will have to wait. There are guests to be greeted and many kisses to be bestowed.”

The Playground Experience at Fish Tales
A A
family vacation can be as chaotic as fun when the kids come along. Of course, you want everyone to enjoy their holiday, yet having a few moments to enjoy a meal can be a challenge if the kids are small. For this reason, alone, some area restaurants are offering playgrounds where you can dine close enough to supervise, and consume your food while the kids expend that extra energy. Fish Tales on 21st Bayside, has taken their kids playground to a whole new level, offering a "play-experience." Owner Shawn Harman, who likes to set unique standards, knew he wanted his playground to stand-out from the others and he knew just how to get the job done. During the Winter of 2016, Daniels Wood Land, who you may have seen on Animal Planet's the Redwood Kings, began construction on Fish Tales pirate adventure. Closely working with Harman, Andy Dauterman and his team created a themed play-experience that breaks free from conventional standards. There are ropes and bridges, climbing apparatus, tunnels, ships and all with a swashbuckling feel. Watchful pirate skeletons keep an eye on things and the depth of sand makes you feel like your in the islands themselves. "It was wonderful working with Shawn," says Dauterman. "He allowed us to be the creative force while meeting his individual needs. He was looking for that "wow" factor and play areas that would work for children from 2-5 years of age and those in the 5-12 age group." For Daniels Wood Land, playgrounds are just one component of the business. They are truly a "theming company," whose list of clients includes both Disney and Universal Studios and other theme parks all over the world. At that level of expertise, you know this playground is worth your time to visit!

DD
ouglas A. “Buxy” Buxbaum grew up in Johnstown, PA. He, like so many others who have made Ocean City their home, started out here working seasonally in the summers while attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), from which he graduated with a degree in Business. Buxy’s early Ocean City gigs included working at The Purple Moose Saloon, Brass Balls Saloon, Shenanigans Irish Pub and Grill, Bull on the Beach, and M.R. Ducks. As a cook, doorman, bar-back and finally bartender, Buxy learned the ins and outs of the restaurant world. He traveled back and forth from Ocean City to Florida, working the race track in Hollywood in the winters and bartending in Ocean City during the summers. In 1988, Buxy started looking for a restaurant to call his own. When the original Salty Dog at 28th Street and Coastal Highway became available, Buxy made the plunge and opened the doors to the new Buxy’s Salty Dog in April 1999. Since that time, Buxy’s has welcomed many great staff members, some of whom are still part of the Salty Dog team. Many of them return with their growing families each summer to say hi and catch up. Buxy’s is a complete transformation of the old Salty Dog. From its beginnings with pool tables, popcorn and draft beer, it has grown into a full-service bar and restaurant, featuring music and live bands, 35” TVs for maximum sports enjoyment, endless drink options, and opportunities for friends to meet, share good times and camaraderie. It is the local destination for many tourist and travelers who visit the Shore each year. The Western Pennsylvania/Pittsburg theme started when Buxy decided to dedicate a special wall in the bar to his hometown of Johnstown. Over the years, many loyal customers, friends, and family from that area of Pennsylvania brought in memorabilia, photos, signs, and sports gear to reflect the region. We now like to say, “We are a little piece of Steel City in Ocean City.” And a great place to cheer on the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates! Buxy and his wife, Annie, have four children: Bridget, Joseph, Frankie, and Andrew. You might see some of the older kids helping out in the kitchen and on the floor when the local workforce goes back to college. Buxy, Annie, and family consider themselves fortunate to be able to welcome many great customers, staff and friend into their saloon year after year. Such loyal customers and staff, now great and valued friends, are what have made Buxy’s Ocean City’s original hometown tavern with a flavor of the Burgh!

Seacrets Distilling Company
L ooking for something different to do in Ocean City? Take a step back in time to prohibition-era with a tour of
Seacrets Distilling Company. While we would expect no less from the Seacrets name, no detail has been left unturned here. There is so much authenticity in the decor that you won't be sure if you came to learn about how they distill spirits or to see the Americana. Your tour begins with a rapid video of the distillery construction. Then you enter an elevator that rivals in appearance to Disney's Tower of Terror. Take it all in; there is so much just in the elevator! While you will step out into a 21st Century distillery, with state of the art equipment, the mesh of modern distillery and charm of the early 1900’s blend throughout your tour.

Your “Spirit Guide” can tell you how each piece of history was carefully selected by owner Leighton Moore and artfully crafted into the fabric of the facility. Everything from the ceiling tiles to the light fixtures, down to the tape dispenser sitting on the front desk, is from 1933 (the year prohibition was lifted) or earlier, with many pieces coming from original Speakeasy's in the Chicago area. From grain to spirits, the way Seacrets Distillery operates is just as fascinating. While the process seems simple, you clearly learn that it's an art form, not to be rushed, but to be carefully developed to maturity. Your tour guide will offer glimpses of how the micro-distillery does things just a little bit different, setting them apart from competitors on the shelf.
There are also tools on the tour that help you visualize processes from a more-simple perspective, like water fountains allowing you to experience the taste difference between town water and reverse osmosis water which they use in the distilling process. Your tour ends in the Speakeasy Lounge where you will need a password to get in, just as you would have during prohibition. The barkeep is very knowledgeable of the spirits and can help you select something personally. Tastings are included in the cost of admission and will help you choose the just the right bottle to take back home. Cheers.

ith all of the ingredients for a memorable wedding, beginning with the sun, sand and surf, Ocean City is the perfect destination for a beach wedding. Of course everything else is close by; restaurants, country clubs and hotels for receptions, many offering stunning ocean or bayside views. There are florists, photographers and churches. Be it a small or large affair, Ocean City offers the perfect venue. The atmosphere is family friendly and there is entertainment for both the kids and grandparents before and after the event. Best of all, when the magical moment arrives, there is no better romantic setting than a beach backdrop, nothing more spectacular than rolling surf and the sound of crashing waves. It’s no surprise that hundreds of couples choose Ocean City every year.
