GRAND MARAIS ARTS FESTIVAL JULY 9 - 10, 2016

Welcome to the Grand Marais Arts Festival

Enjoy the art, soak up the live music, engage with artists to discover their process, and enjoy your artful time along Lake Superior! The 26th Annual Grand Marais Arts Festival is organized by the Grand Marais Art Colony, a nonprofit dedicated to art education, artist services. As such, the Grand Marais Arts Festival is a unique festival that blends a celebration of the arts with the opportunity to learn more about art through demos, activities, and dialogue. The Festival is supported by our 2016 business partners, Visit Cook County, generous individual donors, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the votes of Minnesotans through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

About the Festival host: The Grand Marais Art Colony

WHO WE ARE

Nestled in the harbor-side village of Grand Marais, Minnesota, with direct access to Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the Art Colony is a gateway for people to creatively explore and interpret the rugged coast and inland expanse of waterways, forests, and wilderness. Founded in 1947 (the first art colony in the state) with 20 students in an eight-week summer painting class, the Art Colony has grown to cultivate a vibrant arts community on the North Shore. Today, the Art Colony continues as a retreat and creative home for the artistic spirit, serving over 27,000 people. Throughout the year, artists and creative seekers gather together to learn from renowned instructors, engage in critical dialogue, and explore the artistic process.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

• Artistic expression connects us with our inner and outer landscapes • Artists need time, space, and uninterrupted focus to create work • Mentorship and guidance are critical for all stages of creative development • Dialogue enhances the artistic process and cultural understanding of the arts • Connecting through the arts builds healthy and resilient communities
