Findings [fahyn-ding] noun

1. A thing that is discovered; related to awareness, uncovering, invention, creation, exploration 2. Pieces that jewelers use to join jewelry components together to form a completed article The North Shore is a landscape filled with long horizon lines over Lake Superior, spires of oldgrowth boreal forests, rivers and waterfalls cutting through jagged rhyolite and basalt. Artists have long retreated to the North Shore to explore the lines, contours, and patterns of nature and abstract them into pieces of art. Ours is an emotive and tactile landscape, resonant with the nature of jewelry. The Art Colony, in partnership with the Minnesota Jewelry Arts Guild (MNJag), is pleased to host Findings: A Jewelry Symposium, June 11 – 14, 2015. The four days will be filled with classes, demos, discussions, and lectures for the novice to professional artist, art appreciators, and the broader community to learn more about the art of jewelry making. Come to Grand Marais and let the landscape inspire you!

Welcome to the Grand Marais Art Colony The Art Colony exists to provide services to artists, promote art education, and nurture art in our community by providing an environment for creative excellence. Since 1947 the Art Colony has cultivated a community for the arts on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The Art Colony hosts over 150 classes year-round in media ranging from painting to literary arts, to glass, to ceramics and jewelry. Novice to professional artists will find space to create, mentored guidance, and a supportive atmosphere. A special thank you to our business partners listed in the back of this booklet who significantly contribute to the success of the arts in this community.

Class Descriptions

All classes, demos, and talks held at the Art Colony unless otherwise noted

Jewelry Making with Found Objects | Tova Lund June 11 – 12 | 2 days | Tuition: $210 Explore an intuitive, fast-paced way of working through ideas for jewelry using natural, found objects. Students will make a series of five quick works. Tova will include demonstrations on different ways of manipulating found objects, methods for connecting materials, and techniques for securely and permanently integrating found objects to metalwork. A Prairie Home Enamelin’ | Tedd McDonah June 11 – 12 | 2 days | Tuition: $210 | Supply Fee: $22 Students will be directly involved with designing, preparing, and hands-on firing of vitreous enamels on copper. Tedd will cover a variety of topics including: safety guidelines, sifting, the use of underglaze pencils, decals, and cloisonné wires. Students will have the opportunity to make a piece of wearable jewelry, or Tedd’s specialty, a decorative fishing lure. Forming with the Hydraulic Press | Becky McDonah June 11 – 12 | 2 days | Tuition: $210 | Supply Fee: Varies* Students will learn a variety of ways to create surface textures and volume using the hydraulic press. Some of these possibilities include punches, matrix, embossing, and conforming dies. Becky will discuss and demonstrate different approaches to creating and using dies in conjunction with urethane to achieve results that range from embossing to deeper forming. Students may create finished pieces or a variety of samples. Saltwater Etching | Beth Novak June 13 or June 14 | 9am – Noon | Tuition: $53 | Supply Fee: $23 Do you want to add texture to your metal jewelry but think etching is too complicated or expensive? Join Beth to learn how to use common household items to etch copper and brass. Etched metal can be used as a texture plate, an enameling base, or on its own. Beth will also discuss etching on other metals and students will create several samples. Wax Work with Free-form Gemstones | Scott Hanson June 13 | 1 – 4pm | Tuition: $53 | Supply Fee: $20 Students will observe demonstrations of a range of processes involved in incorporating free-form gemstones into wax models for lost wax casting. Techniques include heat sinking a free-form gemstone, carving various types of integral settings in wax, nesting mating parts for a contoured fit, and using files and gravers to sculpt the finished wax model form. Students will then have the opportunity to use the techniques demonstrated to create their own wax model using a cabochon cut Lake Superior agate.

Cold Connections: Titanium Constructed Jewelry | Danny Saathoff June 14 | 9am – Noon | Tuition: $53 | Supply Fee: Varies* Join Danny to learn the four styles of rivets and the practical applications for each. Class content includes instruction on titanium’s mechanical properties as well as hands-on application as students forge, rivet, and finesse the material into a beautiful cuff bracelet. Titanium cannot be soldered so it is a perfect material to use when honing newly acquired riveting skills. And, titanium is unique in that it is both strong and very lightweight and has a spring tension that, when used correctly, can be extremely advantageous in jewelry making.

Metal Piercing | Pat Schmidt June 14 | 1 day | Tuition: $105 | Supply Fee: Varies* Through an exploration of design, composition, and aesthetic choices, students will work with a jeweler’s saw to create and pierce a pendant or charm in copper, brass, or silver. Pat will first guide students to sketch from botanical specimens, simplifying and abstracting, to arrive at pleasing and “possible” jewelry designs. Then students will concentrate on selection, transfer, and piercing of the selected design in metal. Inspiration Meets Commerce | Brittany Foster June 14 | 1 – 4pm | Tuition: $53 How do jewelers challenge themselves to develop new skills and work with clients while staying true to their artistic roots? Simply put, how do jewelers balance inspiration and experimentation with the need to pay rent? Brittany will share her own experience developing a distinct style, building a brand, doing custom work, and building a career out of jewelry making. Students will have time for reflection and discussion both in small groups as well as in the larger group context.
