The Railway Children Lady Wednesday 30 September 7.30pm Ignition Theatre | Written by Derek Webb Forever remembered as the author of ‘The Railway Children’ and a host of other children’s books, Edith Nesbit was testimony to the maxim that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. In the privacy of her home she was the Bohemian duchess, chain-smoking mother to five children, two of whom were actually those of her philandering husband’s mistress who came to live with them. Edith herself was lover of George Bernard Shaw and later an ever-younger string of adoring young men. This mesmerising contrast between the public figure author of lyrical poetry and children’s stories and the private, often outlandish individual, makes the story of Edith Nesbit a fascinating drama. The Sorcerer Saturday 7 November 7.30pm Presented by Mid Glamorgan Savoyards As always at this time of year, the Mid Glamorgan Savoyards bring the magic of musical comedy to Porthcawl and this time the magic is real, for the performance will be Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Sorcerer. The story has the usual Gilbertian twists and turns and any number of satisfactorily amusing characters. The plot revolves around the power of a magic lozenge, and the salesman trying to sell it. When used however, the pill has unexpected but funny consequences, while Sullivan’s music keeps the story buzzing along. Together with the Mid Glamorgan Savoyards, a full orchestra will provide a delightful evening of musical entertainment. Proceeds from the performance will go to MacMillan for cancer care, GLAZE to promote prostate cancer research and the Save the Children fund, thereby adding to the well over £50,000 raised from previous Savoyard performances and donated to various local and national charities.
