FEATURED STORY

NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL The month of May is alway busy for Grand River Academy. Finals, graduation, and other ceremonies make up the end of the school year. But, this past May, there was a new buzz on campus. Following an extensive nation-wide search conducted by the Board of Trustees and John Farber of RG-175, GRA announced our new Head of School: Mr. Tim Oditt. After numerous campus visits and meetings with members of our school community, Mr. Oditt was unanimously chosen to 17

THE

RIVER

be the best candidate for Grand River Academy to continue its mission to help boys succeed in school and in their life beyond. Mr. Oditt began his career in education as a boys’ basketball coach at the Canterbury Episcopal School in 2004, after serving in the US Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then worked at Hargrave Military Academy where he served as Faculty, Residential Life Instructor, Athletic Director, and, from 2014

FEATURED STORY to the time of his arrival on campus, Assistant Headmaster and Chief of Staff. Mr. Oditt has a B.A. in History from University of Texas at Arlington and a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from University of North Texas Former acting Head of School and Board Chair Mr. Steve Schoneman, had only good things to say about the new Head of School. “The experience and dedication Mr. Oditt brings to Grand River Academy and his commitment to single-gender education will continue to propel GRA forward. His enthusiasm and support for not just the students and their families, but also the Faculty and staff will provide the best environment for the boys to thrive. We’re delighted to welcome Tim and his family to campus. It is an exciting time for Grand River Academy.” Joining Mr. Oditt on campus will be his wife Jennifer and their two children, Julianna and Miles. Mr. Oditt and his family said they are excited for their new home at GRA. “Jennifer and I are thrilled to be joining a community that is dedicated to activating the potential of boys in all aspects of their lives. I look forward to the opportunity to get to know the community of Grand River Academy as, together, we prepare our young men for lifelong success.”

Why GRA? Because preparing young men for success in all aspects of their lives is not only exciting, but tremendously fulfilling! To see their growth from the first day they set foot on campus to the day they cross the stage is continuously amazing. What’s your favorite thing so far about the school? By far, my favorite thing is seeing the dedication of the Faculty and staff to developing our young men. What are your outside interests? Reading, college basketball, the Boston Red Sox, and attending my children’s sporting events. What is something unique about yourself? I have traveled to 24 different countries...and counting! Remember your first time on campus... what stands out? The thing that stands out about my first time on campus was the dedication to teaching boys and meeting them where they are at to develop their success. What is a goal you have for the upcoming school year? My goal for this school year is to become part of the close-knit community and to learn the culture of the school and surrounding community.

The GRA community looks forward to learning about and working with Mr. Oditt during the 2018-2019 school year. We asked Mr. Oditt some questions before the beginning of the school year: THE

FEATURED STORY

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM A young man’s education extends far beyond the white walls of a classroom. Encouraging and inspiring learning, creativity, and passion in all areas of life is vital to the development of any student. Providing the freedom to explore learning opportunities outside a traditional classroom setting is one of the ways Grand River Academy activates personal growth from our boys on campus. Last winter, John Wilcox ’18, took advantage of his opportunity to learn in an untraditional setting. Wilcox worked with Faculty, staff, and

other students to construct an ice-skating rink on campus. After designing a blueprint, Facility Director Joel Laughlin aided Wilcox throughout the construction process, providing support and mentorship until the project was complete. By January, students frequently used the rink during their activity time to take a break from classroom responsibilities. Why exactly an ice rink, though? Wilcox uses one winter sport in particular to destress. “Hockey was a big thing to help me through

FEATURED STORY this year,” Wilcox said. “I plan on playing in college and this rink was a fun thing to do on campus.”

Applying what you learn to real-world activities is done throughout life.

This project is just one of many ways students are able to flex their creative muscles inside of GRAs supportive environment. From building and maintaining a garden to bee-keeping, our students find ways to incorporate their classroom work into real-world projects.

And while he has graduated, Wilcox wanted to impart a bit of wisdom he acquired from his work as an underclassmen:

These projects do more than establish a student-centered campus; they prove to our boys that learning isn’t just something you do when you read Shakespeare or solve a math problem.

“I would look bright onto the future because you need to work on the hard stuff before the good stuff happens. I hope the ice rink sticks around for all of the underclassmen that come back and like to skate.”

IN THE GAME

FULL SPEED AHEAD With a campus of 220 acres, expansive fields perfect for practicing form, and the nearby Greenway Trail to explore, Grand River Academy’s cross-country team has plenty of options for training. These options came to good use during the 2017-2018 school year, as an increased interest in the sport made sure all venues were used by Coach Katy Studer. In previous years, the cross-country team had little experience with competition, only competing in a few local races. However, during the 2017 season, the team participated in bigger races throughout Northeast Ohio. 57

THE

RIVER

Even with little prior exposure to competition, all runners proved to have a successful year. Collin Abbott-Westling ‘21 was a leader on the team, earning 2nd Team LEC All-Conference honors. Coach Studer, with the assistance of Mrs. Dylan Crowell, welcomed the revival of the sport with open arms. Both coaches made team camaraderie a priority, which helped form strong bonds throughout the season. This encouraged each runner, including the coaches, to not only compete against each other but strive to beat their own personal goals and times as well.

IN THE GAME When asked about the team, Coach Studer was beaming with pride. “I am so proud of each runner and that they showed improvement with their hard work,” Studer said. “It was great to see that recognition that if they put in the effort in practices, results would show during races.”

Congratulations to the following participants:

MVP: Collin Abbott-Westling ‘21 MIP: Keith Pezanoski ‘19 Eagle Award: Keith Pezanoski ‘19 & Quentin Pohl ‘20 LEC 2nd Team All-Conference: Collin Abbott-Westling ‘21

Coach Studer’s boys aren’t looking to slow their pace after a successful first season. Activities held during the spring, such as running club, sharpened current cross-country runners form and introduced new students to the sport. With an abundance of opportunity in the future and their heads held high, the team plans to hit the ground running in the 2018 season.

IN THE CLASSROOM

STEAM ACADEMY From paying bills to using GPS to navigate summer vacation destinations, our everyday lives are becoming more and more dependent upon technology and science. While many schools have failed to grasp the importance of this, Grand River Academy has taken strides to make sure our students understand the fundamentals of our ever-changing world.

77

THE

RIVER

Our STEAM summer program gave students a creative learning environment to tackle topics such as coding and engineering while working with and against their peers on various projects. From coding languages and procedures, competing to see who could build the best bottle rocket, to building their own website, the boys in STEAM Academy found ways to bring their passion for learning to each lesson.

IN THE CLASSROOM Along with the five-week summer program, GRA hosted STEAM Day. Much like the academy, children from the surrounding area came to GRA to learn more about science and engineering. Director of Summer Programs Erin Shreve, was proud of the growth her students showed throughout the year, especially their participation during STEAM Day. “The boys did a great job,” Shreve said. “No matter what they were doing they were always trying to help the kids. Their engagement with the kids made it a real success.”

Dillon Broadwell, teaching fellow at GRA, was proud of the boys progress throughout the session. “The boys that came through the program did a great job of taking on topics that were put in front of them,” Broadwell said. “We all had a great time. Personally, I was just glad to see some of them come out of their shell by the end of the summer and show some real passion about their projects.” This enthusiasm was on display at the end of the summer, where the boys gave presentations during the picnic for our new Head of School, Mr. Tim Oditt.

What GRA did for Me

My choice to attend GRA was one of the smartest decisions I ever made. I always struggled in school and never really cared about learning. I was on the brink of failing and my parents were trying to help me find a solution. They found GRA, and I absolutely loved it. The teachers were all on campus, so I always had someone to help me if I was struggling. Grand River Academy helped me get ready for college and I’m grateful for what I learned during my time there. FROM THE FACULTY

WISHING DAVID THOMAS ‘11 BEST OF LUCK There aren’t too many individuals who have lived the life David Thomas ‘11 has. David grew up on campus as the son of Faculty members, attended Grand River Academy graduating in 2011, and returned following college to help in the advancement efforts of the school. It was this experience which helped him connect with so many of GRAs friends and family over the past three and a half years. 137

THE

RIVER

“The academy has always been more than a place or school to me. Literally, GRA has been my home and family and leaving my role certainly is not an easy decision,” shared David. GRA wishes David the very best of luck as he finished his last week at the school in August and steps into a new challenge continuing his role as the Austinburg Township Fiscal Officer and campaigning for County wide office this November.

Head of School Tim Oditt shares, “I have not known David for very long, but his help in aiding me transition here on campus has been invaluable. Through conversations with our Alumni and community members, he has certainly lived out the mission of GRA.”

Grand River Academy would like to extend its gratitude to David for his dedicated efforts over the past three years. We look forward to seeing his continued success in his new adventures in our local community.

As David shared with the GRA community, “My title may change to former employee, but my role in helping our school and love for our mission and GRA family will never change. I look forward to helping with the hiring of a new director of advancement and introducing them to the GRA brotherhood I have been fortunate to know.”
