Welcome Enjoy an autumn season of opera, ballet, drama, dance, musicals and comedy at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre. As I’ve discovered since I started working here in July, an evening at The Grand is more than just a great night out – it’s a special experience made even more memorable by the delightful and elegant surroundings of this Grade II* listed theatre – a jewel in Blackpool’s crown. With the new colour-coded brochure, I hope that you will find it easier than ever to browse through the many delights on offer in the programme. There’s a lot to choose from: Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap; the classic operas Aida and Nabucco provide a feast for both eyes and ears; the feel-good musical Dreamboats and Petticoats is joined by Shakespeare’s Globe production Eternal Love and the fabulous and funny Brassed Off. Peter Pan starring Emmerdale’s Tom Lister, Grand Theatre favourite Steve Royle, Radio Wave FM’s Hayley Kay and lands on our stage for the festive season and is the perfect treat for all the family. The theatre is entering its second year as an Arts Council National Portfolio holder specialising in the presentation of dance. The additional support afforded us through this programme has enabled us to bring you companies of both national and international importance such as Motionhouse, Hofesh Shechter and 2Faced Dance. Finally, earlier this year The Grand was chosen as one of only five theatres in the UK to become part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Learning and Performance Network. Montgomery High School has been appointed as a ‘hub’ for this project which will see, not only a ‘pocket-sized’ production of The Taming of the Shrew staged at the theatre, but a series of workshops and learning events for teachers and pupils from a number of Blackpool schools over the next three years, helping the next generation of audiences develop the theatre-going habit. So, whatever your taste and whatever you choose, I look forward to welcoming you to a great night out at the Grand.

Eternal Love By Howard Brenton
Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 April 2014
Tuesday 11 to Saturday 15 March 2014
It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the National Brass Band Competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse.
When Abelard begins a wild affair with his brilliant student Heloise, his enemies find the perfect pretext to destroy him. Abelard is already on thin ice with the church over his contentious views and when Heloise bears his child out of wedlock, their affair becomes the scandal of the age…
Featuring rousing live music including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem, Brassed Off is a funny and heart-warming drama that reaches stirring heights as a locally cast brass band performs the final scene, set in the Royal Albert Hall, live on our stage.
With its dynamic, contemporary language, stunning costumes and terrific live music, Eternal Love makes history burst into life in an energetic, visceral and above all highly entertaining style. Lively and thought-provoking…with sly humour and slapstick the language pulses with energy. SUNDAY TIMES

Returning with the very first opera she ever produced, Ellen Kent brings Nabucco to life in this lavish new production of Verdi’s epic tale, starring international soloists. Featuring the haunting and melodic Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, ‘Nabucco’ follows the plight of the Hebrews as they are forced from their homeland into exile by the Babylonian King Nabucco. It is a powerful tale laced with revenge, destruction and jealousy.
Directed by Ellen Kent, and starring international soloists, this brand new production brings the hot, dusty plains and dramatic grandeur of ancient Egypt to the stage in Verdi’s classic love story of war, jealousy and revenge. With opulent sets and costumes, this traditional production is as stunning visually as it is musically, featuring some of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote, with the well known arias Celest Aida, Ritorna Vincitor and the great chorus piece the Triumphal March.
Traditionally staged with magnificent sets and costumes, as well as amazing lighting and stage effects, this production promises an evening to remember.

Out of the Shadow Dance Touring Partnership presents Nobulus Out of the Shadow that is an extraordinary mix of breakdance, popping and locking, contemporary dance, acrobatics and ballet. It tells a cautionary tale, from the creation of the Universe and evolution of man through to an imaginary apocalyptic future. Using only their bodies, this 10-strong crew create otherworldly scenes by morphing themselves into structures, creatures and even machines. Set to an epic soundtrack, we see primal images of sacrifice and betrayal, of love and pleasure, death and destruction in this thrilling show. Hofesh Shechter Company visits The Grand Theatre this February to unveil the hotly anticipated new work, Sun.
Broken is Motionhouse’s newest visually thrilling touring production, in which Artistic Director Kevin Finnan continues his exploration of elemental themes.
The World is perfect.
Using multiple layers of scrolling film and Motionhouse’s highly physical dance style, Broken creates an intriguing computer game-esque world of tunnels and burrows, shifting perspectives and seesawing slopes and platforms. Hanging in suspense, diving for support and scrambling to safety, the dancers negotiate the cracks and craters of this world of illusions where nothing is quite as it seems. The performance is practically jet-propelled - the quicksilver cast almost never stops moving. THE TIMES
Super athletic dancers, as dexterous in the air and with ropes as they are on the floor.
From the darkness of Shechter’s emotive and often angry world emerges a bright white light dancing out of the smoke and chaos. Hofesh Shechter brings his brand new full-length work, Sun, with an expanded Company of 14 worldclass dancers and an eclectic soundtrack featuring original music by Shechter, this new work follows the phenomenal success of Political Mother. Escape the clutches of Burke and Hare, dare to dance the Tyburn jig, move to the groove with party Queen Victoria and prepare to do battle in the frightful First World War!

Thursday 31 October
The funniest night of your holiday becomes the funniest night in your town. The most successful show in the Canary Islands for the last 20 years has come to the UK.
Star of Sky LIVING’s Psychic Sally On The Road, Britain’s favorite TV psychic, Sally Morgan returns with her outstanding 2013 nationwide tour.
One million people have seen this amazing show in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the past and you must not miss the opportunity to see this stunning night of music, laughter and razzamatazz.
Often referred to as ‘Psychic to the stars’, Sally has built up an extensive client list having read for well known faces like Katie Price, George Michael and Princess Diana.
Qualmpeddlar
Bill Bailey had doubts about the modern world, but these have now grown into Qualms. He will be channeling these feelings of Unease and Apprehension, with the help of Religious Dubstep, his folk bouzouki, Horntallica, a re-appraisal of some of the world’s greatest works of art and perhaps a dub version of Downton Abbey. He looks at the Consequences of Lies, the Unending Search for the Higgs and the Hiding Skills of Dentists. Bill tries to confront his Cluster-Qualm of living in a Time of Spectacular Ignorance, Nuclear Worry, Rare Planetary Alignment and Spice Girl reunions that may be part of the Mayan End of Days prophecy. Come savour this Broth of Anxiety with Bill Bailey – Qualmpeddlar. He’s a genius, full stop. Calling this Swiftian satirist, versatile multi-instrumentalist and gifted actor merely a comic genius is like calling Michelangelo a house painter.
Music Hall Tavern
Mrs “T”, Special “K” and Courtney will have you rolling in the aisles as they take you through two hours of hilarious entertainment. With stunning costumes and amazing comedy routines you are in for the time of your life. So come and join Paul Carroll (Mrs T) and enjoy an evening on holiday in your home town and don’t forget to bring your handkerchief!
Sally Morgan
Psychic Sally On The Road
Each year Sally packs out theatres as people from all over the country come to witness her incredible gift. Her down to earth nature and infectious personality has attracted a whole new audience to the spiritual world and her astounding accuracy keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. This unique theatrical experience should leave you feeling uplifted and enlightened…as they say seeing is believing! Sally Morgan is investigational/experimental. There are no guaranteed or certain results and the show is for the purpose of entertainment.

2013 is another exciting year for The Grand as we begin working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and continue our successful partnership with the Arts Council. However, live theatre can’t flourish without financial support – and The Grand is no exception.
Ways you can help Individual donations We welcome individual donations, no matter how large or small, and would be delighted to discuss with you how your gift can be used to preserve this great building for future generations or to expand our work with schools and young people. Company support Many local companies have realised the benefit that a partnership with The Grand can bring – from advertising in our brochures and website, to corporate entertaining, to sponsorship. We can create a package that suits your needs – and your budget.
The Friends of the Grand is a group of people who support the beautiful Grand Theatre and its eclectic programme. The role of the Friends of the Grand has changed over the years; nowadays Friends support the theatre in many ways: from raising funds through subscriptions and social events; to financing projects within the theatre. This year the Friends of The Grand assisted with the costs of refurbishing our Stalls Bar, now renamed the Stage Door Cafe Bar.

Theatre Tours There is no theatre quite like The Grand. The published descriptions in 1894 said so, and contemporary theatregoers agree. Renowned as architect Frank Matcham’s masterpiece it has a long and lively history.
Being close to Christmas, you can be sure there will be a few festive favourites on offer!

The RSC Learning and Performance Network Earlier this year The Grand was chosen as one of only five theatres in the UK to become part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Learning and Performance Network.
