“EVERYONE SHOULD BE MOVED BY THIS POETIC AND ACCOMPLISHED PIECE OF THEATRE”.
Adam Knight, Chief Executive, Blackpool Grand TheatreThe Royal Theatrical Support Trust Sir Peter Hall Director Award Winner 2022
We talked to director Steven Bailey about why he chose The Real & Imagined History of the Elephant Man as his latest venture:
“For me this is a very cool project which is going to let us really reconsider how we talk about ideas around work, disability and industrialisation.”
How is the stage play different to the famous film?
“The play corrects and amends several details of his life that we’ve often emitted or overlooked. For instance, his name was Joseph as opposed to John as he’s called the film, and that’s due to the film being based solely on his doctor’s notes.
But it’s also imagined because, at the end of the day, we don’t know a huge amount about Joseph Merrick, the person, as opposed to the body or the disability or the condition.”
Why did you choose Blackpool Grand Theatre for this thrilling new drama?
“It is a massive opportunity for me to work on a large stage and bring a story through that I think is incredibly important.”
What can audiences expect from this production?
“It’s going to be quite dark and industrial but very invigorating, pulsating, energetic, with live music, lots of smoke and we’ve also got some quiet and interesting staging moments.”
How important was it for you to make this a piece of theatre that also features disabled performers?
“I feel incredibly fortunate and excited to be working with several of the finest disabled talent that are in this country currently, particularly of course Zak. He has filled out the role incredibly and I can’t wait to see what he brings. The commitment he’s bringing to the part is just really, really exciting.”
What would you say to Grand Theatre visitors about The Real & Imagined History of the Elephant Man?
“I really hope you all come and see it and I can’t wait to tell this unique story.”
Blackpool Grand Theatre is delighted to introduce the first in a series of new relationships with some of the UK’s leading producing theatres. The first, Nottingham Playhouse, was awarded Regional Theatre of the Year 2019 by The Stage and creates a range of critically acclaimed productions throughout the year. Partnering with the likes of Nottingham Playhouse enables us to share with you the very best in home-grown theatre from across the UK, showcasing More Stories for More People.
If you think you know the story of The Elephant Man – think again. The European premiere of Australian playwright Tom Wright’s acclaimed play imagines an alternative. This is the story of a man fighting for his right to be and to belong.
Arriving from his East Midlands beginnings in a London thick with the grime of industrialisation, Joseph Merrick is an anomaly. In a city of factories that churn out uniformity, there is no place for a unique being like him. But Merrick and the city are evolving into something new. We follow him through the workhouse, the freakshow and hospital as he searches for acceptance in a society that just wants to stare at him.
Powerful, angry and surprising – The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man questions industrialisation, capitalism, disability and difference, finally putting Joseph at the centre of his own story.
Director Stephen Bailey is the winner of The RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award 2022. Zak Ford-Williams’ previous work here includes Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol, and BBC1 drama Better. Supported with a grant from the Royal Theatrical Support Trust.

Blackpool Grand Theatre has had an incredible year so far, including celebrating a renewal in our Arts Council England National Portfolio status. This helps support The Grand in the development and delivery of our creative engagement activity including our world-class Story-Led Resilience Programme. Over the next three years, we will work with children, young people, community groups and artists in residence “making more stories to share with more people”.

We continue to power ahead with our carbon reduction programme. In the past few months, we have been able to replace all our auditorium ‘houselights’ and around half of our stage lighting with LED equivalents, reducing electricity consumption by over 80%.
We were delighted to have The RSC return with their incredible production of Julius Caesar; and comics Tom Allen, Frankie Boyle, and Jon Richardson packed the house! Other incredible successes
include The Mousetrap, The Rocky Horror Show, Titanic, and Blackpool’s No.1 Pantomime Sleeping Beauty, with UK Productions.
The installation of a specially commissioned sculpture of Friend of The Grand and, one of our most iconic and legendary performers, Sir Ken Dodd OBE, has received rapturous recognition from devotees travelling from all over the UK. This Autumn we look forward to celebrating the 50th Anniversary of The Friends of The Grand, and to welcoming the huge comic hit Noises Off, full of unstoppable laughter direct from the West End. In addition to the premiere of the new John Godber play Do I Love You? and the vibrant new musical fiesta about passion and pride: La Bamba!

Noises Off is one of the greatest British comedies ever written and visits Blackpool Grand direct from a triumphant West End season. Starring Liza Goddard, Matthew Kelly & Simon Shepherd.
Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill, a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Noises Off follows the on and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, Nothing On.
From the shambolic final rehearsals and opening night in Weston-super-Mare, to a disastrous Matinee in Ashton-under-Lyne seen entirely and hilariously silently from backstage, we also share their final brilliantly catastrophic performance in Stockton-on-Tees.

Join Les, Ralph, Judd and Lucky Eric as they relive a night in a Yorkshire disco in the 80s. Like a hideously funny Saturday Night Fever, the original Bouncers is back in town. Everyone will be there: the DJ, the girls, boys and the fish and chip van.
Hilarious, vulgar, frenetic and highly physical, the play has become an international sensation, gathering awards from around the world. Often imitated but never beaten, the original Bouncers is eye – wateringly funny, celebratory and as relevant today as it ever was. With a pumping 80s soundtrack, this new production takes us back to the glorious highs when disco was king, and everyone lived for the weekend. Don’t miss the classic comedy and Northern favourite.

Now they can’t get enough; from Brid Spa to Stoke, from Eggborough to the Tower Ballroom, our young soulies are determined to keep the faith!
This is Northern Soul for a new generation, but with rising costs, unemployment, and small town blues, has anything really changed? Is this England 1973 or 2023? The pubs are closing, hospitality has gone, and strikes are everywhere; but when you’re out on the floor…
