Welcome

This season we have some new and returning companies, including Shakespeare 4 Kidz which I must admit appeals to all age groups. This company has never performed at the Grand before, but has UK and Worldwide acclaim. The Touring Consortium is returning with To Kill A Mockingbird starring Duncan Preston as Atticus Finch. This performance is kindly supported by a new partner, systemHOST, who are part of our educational outreach programme. We have included as many genres in one week as possible, from 20th to 27th March, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the theatre “officially” re-opening on 23rd March 1981. This season also includes the return of The Drifters after more than a decade. Thriller Live returns, which of late has been performing Arena tours. I hope the theatre has programmed a full and varied season for you, with yet another highlight in Monty Python’s Spamalot starring Phill Jupitus, Todd Carty and Blackpool’s very own Jodie Prenger. I thank you for your continued support, especially in these hard economic times. With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, Neil Thomson - Chief Executive and General Manager Official sponsors

Earl Okin

Up Pompeii Based on characters created by Talbot Rothwell and Sid Colin Starring the ever-popular and always hilariously funny Damian Williams, recently seen as the presenter on Sky1’s Are You Smarter Than Your Ten Year Old?, in the role of ‘Lurcio’ the slave, Up Pompeii is one of the most fondly remembered BBC comedies. ‘Lurcio’ was made famous by the late Frankie Howerd, who is one of Damian’s favourite comedians hence his desire to play this character on stage. Up Pompeii is set in ancient Pompeii, pre-eruption and promises to be an ideal vehicle for Damian’s talents for interacting with his audience in exactly the same way as Frankie Howerd did all those years ago. Now updated, Up Pompeii, with Damian Williams in control, promises to be one of the highlights of our new season. Certainly not to be missed.

More... From the author of the acclaimed War Horse recently performed by the National Theatre.

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. ‘The horrors of war and the joyfulness of life are bound up together in this magnificent show.’ The Scotsman ***** ‘An infinitely touching, intensely acted account of a young First World War Soldier’s final day.’ Sunday Express*****

Kate Rusby The defining voice of contemporary English Folk Music, Kate Rusby’s exquisite interpretations of traditional songs and finely wrought self-penned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre. A rare achievement for a folk artist but entirely understandable given Kate’s expressive vocals that invest whatever she sings with irresistible emotional depth. In November 2010 Kate released her much anticipated new album, Make The Light, her first record of completely self composed songs. This landmark release has been well received by both critics and fans alike. It features Kate’s all-new band, who as ever, have been drawn from the cream of Britain’s folk instrumentalists.

In true Opera della Luna style eight multi-talented singer/actors become crew, chorus and principals in a brilliantly fast and hilarious production of this famous comic opera. Packed to the brim with toe-tapping tunes, the wit and verve of this production will prove beyond doubt that Opera della Luna have now established themselves as one of the country’s leading exponents of operetta and comic music-theatre.

Kate’s wondrous singing, her hugely engaging Yorkshire humour and her new ensemble’s marvellously intuitive support ensure that audiences will be treated to a truly remarkable and uplifting concert experience. The Grand Theatre was designed for a voice like this. Page 36

Blood, Sweat & Tears balletLORENT balletLORENT presents their new full length production Blood, Sweat & Tears; an exploration of the darkness and light of extreme love. As a couple experience a tender and all-consuming love for their newborn baby, they begin to fight for affection and attention from each other. Fantasy memories of their wedding day play in contrast to their sense of isolation, and a swarm of puppet-like children haunt their subconscious. Tender and powerful, with movement vocabulary sourced from both ballet and wrestling, Blood, Sweat & Tears is inspired by the ups and downs of unconditional love. ‘It’s as if Liv Lorent has lived through the same experience, and indeed the audience has in some way too. A startling performance and one which will stay with me for a long time.’ The Chronicle

The Big Ballet The Size Does Matter Tour A ballet like no other, Amande Concerts presents The Big Ballet, an ensemble of 16 Corps de Ballet dancers, each weighing no less than 16-stone and united in a common cause; not to lose a single pound. From Russia’s Ural mountains, a region from where Tchaikovsky himself hails, The Big Ballet formed in 1994 and set out to deliberately and above all, self-confidently challenge accepted social standards in a world where the pursuit of slenderness and beauty seems obsessive. The dancers courageously and imposingly prove that grace, elegance, charisma and nimbleness is not the demesne of the “thin”, proudly presenting their voluptuous yet surprisingly sinuous and flexible figures.

In late 1940s New York City, gambler Nathan Detroit is having trouble trying to find a venue for his next floating craps game. Word has got out about the game and the “big boys” are in town, all looking for a piece of the action. Nathan secures the local garage for his illegal game, but the owners want $1000 security deposit first. From where is he going to get the money, and how will he keep Adelaide, his long-suffering fiancée, unaware of what’s going on? Sky Masterson, a high-rolling gambler, arrives in town on his way to Havana. Nathan observes that Sky is travelling alone and Sky brags that he could get any woman he wanted to accompany him. Nathan then proposes a $1000 bet which he believes he cannot lose: Sky must take a doll of Nathan’s choice to dinner in Havana. Inspired by the passing Save-A-Soul Mission band, Nathan chooses none other than Sergeant Sarah Brown.

At the mission, Sarah and her team are dejected. They face closure unless they can save some sinners. Sarah is excited when Sky enters and proclaims that he wants to be saved. Once they are alone, Sky offers a proposal: he will fill her mission with “one dozen genuine sinners” for her meeting if she will accompany him to Havana. Nathan, certain that Sky will lose the bet, arranges to use the garage. But will Sarah agree to go to Havana? Will Nathan win his bet and get his much needed $1000? Will Adelaide find out what he’s up to? Guys and Dolls is presented by Blackpool Operatic Players who also presented My Fair Lady and most recently Mack & Mabel.

This most beloved and widely read Pulitzer Prize winner, now in it’s 50th year of publication, tells the extraordinary and unforgettable story of life in the American Deep South through the enquiring eyes of a child. Jem and Scout Finch are growing up during the 1930s depression but their idyllic childhood innocence is shattered with the realisation that bigotry and prejudice rule in their small town of Maycomb, Alabama. When their father Atticus defends a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, the whole family become the target of gossip and abuse. Set in America’s scorching Deep South at a time when racial tensions were at an all-time high, the challenging and uncomfortable issues this classic addresses are as relevant today as they were when the book was first written. Following his critically acclaimed “towering performance” (Yorkshire Post), in The Touring Consortium’s 2007 production of To Kill A Mockingbird, Duncan Preston is recreating his role as the iconic lawyer Atticus Finch in a new production of this gripping classic. Duncan is probably best known for his appearance in Emmerdale.
