Back in 1995, a certain cheeky chappie called Robbie Williams left pop’s finest group: Take That. What followed was a twist of separation and emotions as Robbie Williams became a UK national treasure. Fast-forward a decade. Gary, Mark, Jason and Howard decided to relight the fire, and the UK saw the biggest comeback in the history of music, the return of Take That. Since then, scoring hit after hit, they have broken box office records selling out The Circus tour in record time.

Royal Marines Band Recognised as one of the finest musical militarty bands in the world The Royal Marines Band Service provides musical support for the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines on every type of occasion. The origins of The Royal Marines Band Service go back to the days of Drake and Hawkins when drummers signalled the ‘changing watches’ or ‘beat the men to quarters’. In the six companies of the Duke of York and Albany’s Regiment of Foot - the forerunners of the Royal Marines - which were raised in 1664 - the Colour and the Drum provided a rallying point in close battle. Although best known for major ceremonial events - immaculately turned out ranks of white helmets and blue uniforms, playing and marching in perfect time behind the magnificent drummers and the Drum Major - each of the bands which make up the Service has to perform as an orchestra and a dance band as well as a military band. The repertoire covers every category of music.

Frank Matcham Theatre Tours
There is no theatre quite like the Grand. The published descriptions in 1894 said so, and contemporary theatregoers agree. This is renowned architect Frank Matcham’s masterpiece theatre, with a long and lively history. A backstage and front of house tour is yours for the taking. See the renovated, ornate auditorium and savour the wonders of the hidden, functional world behind the curtain. Stand on the raked stage and observe the cantilevered tiers of circles, boxes and pit - and the complete visibility of every seat in this atmospheric house, from the other side of the gilt ‘picture frame’. Test the acoustic perfections and learn about the sound positions. See the stage from the wings, the machinery for changing scenes and the latest lighting equipment in one of Britain’s first all-electric theatres.

John Godber directs the 25th Anniversary production of his Olivier Award-winning comedy. Actress and TV personality Abi Titmuss, fresh from a critically-acclaimed performance as Lady Macbeth, stars as a gym instructor attempting to kick an unruly bunch of amateur Rugby League misfits into touch in just eight short weeks. When Rugby League obsessive Arthur Hoyle bets his savings on the team from the Wheatsheaf Arms, a squad with a less than impressive reputation for losing every single match they have ever played, nothing short of a miracle can help. Arthur has to turn the unwilling team into the best squad north of the Humber as they prepare to face their arch rivals, the Cobbler’s Arms. But help is at hand in the form of a gym instructor who may just have what it takes to prepare the boys for the match of their lives… Generously supported by

Ian Dickens Productions are proud to present the classic period comedy Love’s A Luxury by Guy Paxton and Edward V. Hoile starring Emmerdale heart-throb Ben Freeman who played Scott Windsor, Richard Walsh (London’s Burning’s “Sicknote”) and Hollyoaks’ Jennifer Biddall who played Jessica Harris with two of Ian Dickens Productions’ most popular actors, Giles Watling (who played the vicar, Oswald in Bread) and David Callister. Charles Pentwick, a flamboyant and successful theatrical producer is a very lucky man. He’s always surrounded by gorgeous actresses and attractive chorus girls. Only one problem. His wife is a jealous and suspicious woman. With just cause! To escape being henpecked, he and his actor friend Bobby Bentley flee to a country cottage. Ah the peace and quiet! Expecting to be greeted by the housekeeper, plain Mrs Harris, they find she is replaced by her pert and pretty daughter, Molly, whose eyes alight with delight on Bobby. Then the tantalising French starlet, Fritzy Villiers, who fancies Charles, descends on the cottage. So that when, unannounced, Mrs Charles Pentwick arrives, she reacts. Vehemently! Events spin deliriously out of control and soon the whole cast are romping through a series of hilarious misunderstandings and mistaken identities. This glorious comedy is a delicious cocktail full of zest and fizz – guaranteed to send the audience home with a spring in their step and a twinkle in their eye. Love’s A Luxury follows hot on the heels of recent smash hit productions such as It’s Never Too Late, Nightfright and Murdered To Death.

Following the success of the award-winning BBC television series, Bill Kenwright presents a fresh new revival of Keith Dewhurst’s original stage adaptation of the much loved story Lark Rise to Candleford. Based on the first book of Flora Thompson’s trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels, this heart-warming play was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 1978 and was nominated for two Olivier awards. Seen through the eyes of young Laura Timms, the play follows a day in the life and relationships of the farm workers, craftsmen and gentry of the fictional hamlet of Lark Rise at the end of the nineteenth century. It is the first day of harvest, and the villagers celebrate with the simple pleasures of music, song and dance, creating a moving and evocative picture of a forgotten England.

How the cat purred and how the witch grinned as they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind. The witch and her cat are flying happily along on their broomstick when a gust of wind blows her hat, bow and wand away into the night. With the help of a daft dog, a beautiful bird and a friendly frog, the lost belongings are retrieved. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK! - it snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? ‘An enjoyable and energetic hour performed by a genuinely engaging young cast.’ The Guardian Image Copyright Axel Scheffler and Macmillan Children’s Books.

Maximum Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Maximum Rhythm ‘n’ Blues is back once again. This all-star line up features The Manfreds with original members Paul Jones, Mike D’Abo, Tom McGuinness and Mike Hugg and special guests Alan Price and Cliff Bennett. These artists learned their craft by playing the exciting London club circuit in such famous clubs of the time as The Flamingo, Klooks Kleeks, Ricky Ticks, Eel Pie Island, and Ronnie Scotts and The 101 Club creating the birth of British Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, which rapidly spread across the nation. After the successful reunion of The Manfreds in 1991, the band injects all of the enthusiasm back into their timeless anthems Do Wah Diddy Diddy, 5-4-3-2-1 and Mighty Quinn. Alan Price brings his own quintessential style to the bill with his classics I Put A Spell On You, Simon Smith And His Amazing Bear and The House That Jack Built. Rebel Rouser Cliff Bennett completes the bill bringing with him hits One Way Live, I’ll Take You Home and Got To Get You into My Life.

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. Starring The X Factor’s Niki Evans as Mrs Johnstone, the superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 21st phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. No wonder Blood Brothers is now ‘The musical for all time’. Generously supported by

La Bohème The Marriage Of Figaro Whether this is your first taste of La Bohème or you are a connoisseur of Puccini’s masterpiece, you will adore this celebration of all things youthful. William Relton’s inspired direction takes us on a heart-breaking journey. Puccini’s glorious melodies echo the innocence and petulance, the passion and despair, the optimism and loss which are the potent ingredients of this classic tale of love. Mozart’s The Marriage Of Figaro has often been referred to as one of the three perfect “popular” operas. Its heady mix of comedy and pathos, lust and love, betrayal and social intrigue is every bit as powerful and relevant today as it was in the 18th century.

Teechers Starring Zoë Lister (Hollyoaks) Remember your school days? The dreaded detentions, soggy semolina, snogging behind the bike sheds and breaktime bust-ups?! Well prepare to be catapulted back to the classroom and take a raw and riotous look at life in a typical British school, in this classic comedy from BAFTA winner John Godber. Meet the staff; the trendy young Drama teacher making his shaky debut; the Deputy Head who rules the school with an iron rod; the gentle Humanities teacher who is desperate for a quiet life; Doug, the grumpy old Caretaker, and the Headmistress – a boisterous battleaxe and some-time Amateur Dramatics star! And prepare yourselves for the pupils; a wayward mob of disruptive delinquents - determined to wreak havoc, hormones and horror throughout the school! Nostalgia, mischief and mayhem reign supreme in this classic classroom drama! ‘10 out of 10.’ The Independent ‘Class warfare, teacher’s tantrums, sex and the shortcomings of the state system - marvellously funny.’ The Times ‘Vivid and telling snapshots of life at the chalkface…magic.’ The Guardian

Roary The Racing Car
A ‘Grand’ Celebration
Saturday 26 Ken Dodd OBE
Follow the adventures of Roary – a bright red, cheeky racing car and his amazing race car friends at Silver Hatch race track in this exciting new live children’s show. The animated TV series features the voice of award-winning comedian Peter Kay and is narrated by racing legend Stirling Moss.
Next year the Grand Theatre will have traded in its present format for 30 years. It was on Wednesday 23 March 1981 that the theatre reopened with a performance of The Merchant of Venice starring Timothy West and Prunella Scales from The Old Vic. To celebrate this milestone, during the week of Monday 21 to Sunday 27 March 2011, we will have some wonderful productions including The Merry Widow from Opera della Luna, Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet performed by The Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia and a return from one of our founding patrons, and friend, Mr Kenneth Arthur Dodd, who I would like to thank most sincerely for his support and appearances at this theatre. There will also be other performances of different genres to complete this momentous week of celebrations. I have personally seen the highs and lows since the re-opening of the theatre in 1981 and I look forward to guiding the theatre into its next 30 years. During the week there will be generous concessions for the Friends of the Grand whose endeavours assisted in the purchase of and continued support of the Grand Theatre.
Friday 11 March
