Valuing families and providing a great family experience A big smile... The Grand has been welcoming families for generations. All our staff pride themselves on greeting families with a big smile and helpful support. Over the next three years we have made it one of our top priorities to become even more Family Friendly. Family Friendly shows... We work hard to bring you the best touring family shows, including Peppa Pig, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Gangsta Granny. PLUS this season we launch smaller scale shows in The STUDIO. Making it easier... We’re all about making your visit enjoyable and stress-free. We have great baby changing facilities and will be installing a new buggy park area in the stalls. We will be changing our family tickets to make them more diverse for all family group sizes. Over the next six months we will also be implementing healthier drinks and snacks, a Family Friendly Guide to our facilities and standards, plus a live performance feed into our Stage Door Bar. The Grand Theatre is signed up to the Family Arts Standard with Family and Childcare Trust and works with VisitBlackpool and Blackpool Council on being Family Friendly.

THE GRAND Blackpool Is continually looking for ways to engage children, young people and their teachers with a range of cultural opportunities and experiences. There are lots of ways that schools can get involved with productions at The Grand: We work with schools to offer a range of projects and tailor-made practical workshops linked to our visiting theatre shows, which can take place both here in The STUDIO or in your school. Recently we have had success as an Arts Award Centre and have advisors qualified to deliver all 5 levels of Arts Award. We are also a registered Arts Award supporter, so get in touch to find out how we can help and support you with your delivery. We are genuinely passionate about opening up theatre to young people. Added to this is our drive to involve teachers in workshops and training, sharing best practice and canvassing opinions about ways in which The Grand can support and work with you. A highlight opportunity in this brochure is the Teachers & Practitioners Creative Learning Network meeting on Wednesday 2nd March, 6pm, pre-show ZooNation. We are excited that through our partnership with the National Theatre the new NT Connections Youth Company will be performing this season in their production, Blackout. The Grand is also host to Fylde

Youth Dance Company that audition local talented dancers annually. As one of only 10 theatres to work in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and having our very own Learning and Performance Network, we are delighted to be presenting the RSC national tour of A Midsummers Night’s Dream. Our first LPN schools festival, The Dream, is also being presented in March. The Grand is best placed to offer unique and tailored packages for young people in education, tied in with some of the best touring companies in the UK and Internationally. Please contact us if you want to get involved in one of our projects or you would like to talk to us about a tailored event. DRAMA The Touring Consortium Theatre Company presents a Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Birmingham Repertory Theatre production

Of Mice and Men

TUES 22 to SAT 26 MAR

Evenings 7:30pm, Thurs & Sat Matinees 2pm

by John Steinbeck

Set in America during the Great Depression, this classic play tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant farm workers, who go in search of new beginnings, in the hope of attaining their shared dream: of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land and building a home. After a long and exhausting journey, the pair arrive at a farm in California where they seek work. But they are no strangers to trouble and soon find themselves reeling from the fall out of an innocent misunderstanding which spirals out of control and leaves the two men, bound together by friendship, facing an earth-shattering climax. John Steinbeck is one of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century and Of Mice and Men remains one of the most poignant statements of being human our contemporary theatre has produced. Get in touch to find out more about Pre & Post show talks. After the success of Brave New World Young Reporter Scheme we will be recruiting again for this production. The Creative Learning Department works across four areas: • • • •

Education: schools, colleges, universities Young People Families Communities

Here are two examples of projects from Summer and Autumn 2015 We have worked in partnership with New Art Club, Blackpool Council’s Family Learning Team, local schools and Whipper Snappers Photography. These projects also form part of the Blackpool Cultural Education Hub Programme. Over 40 local Blackpool families attended the theatre for the first time and plan to be involved in future Family Theatre Projects. Hercules Explore Arts Award - 29 young people aged 8-9years all passed Arts Award Explore and will receive an accredited qualification and certificate of achievement. The aim of the project was to work with a class of children from St John’s School to engage with theatre through delivery of the Arts Award Explore accredited qualification. Sarah Jane Lockwood (the artist) provided two introductory dance workshops. In line with the Arts Award specification, the young people attended a live performance of New Art Club’s Hercules at the Grand Theatre Blackpool. This trip informed the research aspect of the Arts Award, encouraging the young people to engage with culture in

their local area. The class investigated the themes using creative skills and choreography methods learned in the initial pre-show workshops, resulting in the creation of a class performance piece that they shared with teachers, parents and peers. ”I really liked watching the show and taking part. To be honest it was brilliant, I wouldn’t change anything!” (Harley, aged 9)

PAST PROJECTS

The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Teatime Photography Project – 77 Families from 8 schools took part in this project in partnership with Blackpool Family Learning. The course gave the parents ideas of how a book could be used to support their child’s learning. Each session lasted two hours and involved a parent workshop with the tutor for one hour, followed by an hour where the parent was joined by their child to work on joint fun activities. The parents were given a voucher which they could exchange for 2 tickets for any performance of the show at the Grand Theatre, Blackpool with the option of purchasing additional tickets if required. 15 families had never been to the theatre before, 100% families would like to go to the theatre again, and all families talked about the show and the story after visiting the theatre. "So enjoyable. Watching your child's face as they watch the live action is priceless. Such a wonderful thing to do." Parent "My child has become more enthusiastic when reading and tends to listen more when actions and sounds are involved." Parent 23
