Welcome
Being in our thirtieth year of operation of Matcham’s Masterpiece by its present owners, the Grand continues its aim to give audiences of the North West a fresh and popular appeal to its programme. This year we have a ‘summer season’ which we haven’t had for some six years and we are continuing to programme performances for young people, including popular children’s characters Thomas and Friends and Bob the Builder, moreover we will see the return of Shakespeare 4 kidz, Horse and Bamboo and other educational productions through our cultural offer to schools. Blackpool is coming to the end of its first phase of regeneration and it is hoped this will attract many of our past and present patrons to look and enjoy the works that have taken place and stay and watch one (or more hopefully) of our season’s performances from now until Christmas. I would like to thank our sponsors who have continued to support us through some very difficult economic times, but most of all I would like to thank you, our patrons for your continued support. Best wishes, Neil Thomson Chief Executive and General Manager Official sponsors

This most beloved and widely read Pulitzer Prize winner, now in it’s 50th year of publication, tells the extraordinary and unforgettable story of life in the American Deep South through the enquiring eyes of a child. Jem and Scout Finch are growing up during the 1930s depression but their idyllic childhood innocence is shattered with the realisation that bigotry and prejudice rule in their small town of Maycomb, Alabama. When their father Atticus defends a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, the whole family become the target of gossip and abuse. Set in America’s scorching Deep South at a time when racial tensions were at an all-time high, the challenging and uncomfortable issues this classic addresses are as relevant today as they were when the book was first written. Following his critically acclaimed “towering performance” (Yorkshire Post), in The Touring Consortium’s 2007 production of To Kill A Mockingbird, Duncan Preston is recreating his role as the iconic lawyer Atticus Finch in a new production of this gripping classic. The Black Veil
by John Goodrum based on a short story by Charles Dickens One winter’s evening, towards the close of the year 1800, or within a year or two of that time, a young medical practitioner, recently established in business, was seated by a fire in his parlour listening to the wind which was beating the rain in pattering drops against the window. When a visitor arrives from the dark streets, dressed in deep mourning, the upper part of her figure carefully muffled in a black shawl, her face, as if for concealment, is covered by The Black Veil. The woman appears distressed and frightened but what is her deadly secret? What terrifying and tragic mystery lies behind her shroud? What shocking events await the new doctor as he ventures in the darkest, most miserable parts of London?

She lives in the basement of the office building she cleans and one night finds a body. By the time the police arrive, there is no body and no evidence. The wrong alarms are sent out, murdered men turn up alive, and the whole thing is chalked up to the cleaning woman’s imagination until an unidentified body is discovered on a distant hill and the cleaning woman uncovers more evidence in the course of her duties. Is the company owner staging his own murder? Or did he kill his wife’s lover? Is the lover a firm employee or someone else? Where do the two female assistants fit in? What is the wife withholding? A thousand laughs and tingles will delight audiences young and old.

Jimmy Tarbuck
Tarby, as he is known to millions of TV viewers, is one of the country’s most evergreen performers and a master of light entertainment. Having successfully spent more than 40 years in the notoriously fickle world of showbusiness, Jimmy Tarbuck has hosted numerous television shows, variety shows, chat shows and game shows and his cheeky grin and boy-next-door charms have won him fans far away from his native Liverpool. However, Tarby is at his best in front of a live audience and during his date in Blackpool he will be sharing anecdotes, demonstrating his quickfire wit and thoroughly entertaining the audience in a show which promises comedy for grown-ups rather than adult comedy.

The Magic Flute Mozart’s fantasy quest opera contains some of his most celebrated, beautiful and demanding music. In a mythical land somewhere between sun and moon, the young prince Tamino is rescued from a savage monster by three mysterious ladies. But can they, or their ruler the Queen of the Night be trusted? Is Sarastro really as evil as they suggest? And what about the beautiful princess Pamina? Tamino has a lot to learn - a fanciful story of low comedy and high ideals - a sheer delight and ultimately - great fun!

If you like this show why not try...
One of the most successful musicals of all time, this timeless tale of little orphan Annie is back, giving a whole new generation the chance to experience this enchanting musical about never giving up hope. Annie is a gutsy 11 year old orphan, who being left on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage, run by the cruel and crooked Miss Hannigan, is determined to find her real parents. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils the evil plans of dastardly Miss Hannigan and her devious brother, Rooster.
Winner of no less than 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and also boasting one of Broadway’s most memorable scores including It’s A Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street. N.Y.C. and the ever-optomistic Tomorrow, Annie is a delightful theatrical experience for the entire family. It’s no wonder that this heart-warming show has become a classic.
